Nice setup. I’ve got rods and canons from Breakaway, good stuff! Hope you get some monsters! I’m taking a trip to Texas in April. My first time there! I’m stoked, going to try for gar and then some LBSF in the gulf. Good luck!
Kinda looks like my bluegill rod/reel setup LOL. That thing is huge I made up four rods from blanks that were that big I didnt know how big they were until I got them in the mail. The funniest place here we catch nice size groupers and some other species is definitely in the rock areas so you need a beast reel such as the makaira the Daiwa bg the shimano saragosa and more beasts
Thinking about getting the 30000 for some big sharks on the beach (currently running an Authority 8500 on a CCP 8nB rod). It’s almost twice as expensive as the Authority 10500, though. Specs are similar, but I’m sure the Makaira is built better (probably not $400 better, though). Any experience with the Authority? How’s the Makaira been? Good channel, brother.
I personally do not like the authority. The drag system on the makaira alone beats most drag systems. The makaira is basically a lever drag. It's heavy, but built extremely well.
The only problem I have with the reel is the handle. I had a cheapy freshwater reel with a handle like that I was walking down the sidewalk jamming to some tunes and some guy came running up to me with the reel handle in his hand I guess I bumped it and the handle unscrewed and fell off in the middle of an intersection. He saw it but I didn't hear it fall off. So since that day years ago I always buy a reel with the handle that goes all the way through the reel and has something on the other side that screws into the shaft and locks it into place It took two years before they had extra handles for sale for that reel too. I ordered two of them and then sold all my reels with that type of handle to a guy at work who only fished out of his boat I think I just own Shimano spinning reels nothing too expensive because I give away all my reels every other year to my nephews
Nice megalodon setup Carlos! I have been eyeing out the Drumstick rod, how does it cast? How stiff the tip is (bite detection)? Which one do you prefer since you have the heavy and the light versions? I am looking to get me a new short setup for baits, I hike for most of my fishing spots and a 2pc 12ft rod is a pain in the hoo ha to carry while hiking through rocky terrain.
Carlitos quick question , I wanna buy spinning reel but am not sure which one to get, which one cast further okuma flite or okuma makaira 10000? Thanks Hermano.
Okuma flite casts further, but the makaira is a whole different beast. The makaira is a luxury world horse that can reel anything in. There's no other reel like it.
Dude I give you a ton of credit or anyone that takes expensive gear in places like that. I accidentally stepped between rocks on a jetty dropping and destroying a $140 reel which broke my heart so I couldn't imagine you having an accident with a $600 plus reel. The only way you would catch me take expensive gear out now is on a boat.
I get expensive gear like this for longevity. This reel is gonna be dunked, laid on rocks, and it's gonna be treated as the way it was marketed. I'm not like those other guys that buy a $1000 reel and rod and baby the hell out of it. I like gear with grit and personality.
I buy expensive gear for longevity as well but unfortunately I'm not exactly Chase Manhattan bank so it's not like I can just go out and replace an $1100 Saltiga or any other costly equipment whenever I feel like it.☺️...From my own personal experience I now budget well and do a pretty good job of not overspending unnecessarily. In other words, you won't catch using a $300 or $400 reel to go Crappie fishing when I can get a good reel for $35 to $70 and get more longevity from most because I take care of my equipment and know how to properly use it. Same thing for my rods. But that's just me. I look at fishing as using the right tool for the right job. Every type of fishing is going to require different gear. My Saltiga is my big game reel I use for Tuna and Amberjack but you would not see me use it for catching Striped Bass or other similar species that I could use a good sealed $140 reel for this purpose. Now if I'm going to be in the water and that reel is constantly in water than I'll use an expensive reel like a Van Staal or Salt X. So you pretty much know where I use my judgement on my equipment.
@eves08109 better man lol? You baby your gear or what lol? I say that because there's a group of 'elite' anglers in my area that will buy saltigas and Stella but will baby them to hell. They look down on other people for using a $150 reel for bull reds and jacks. Some of these guys show up with a $1500 setup to fish the jetty, but don't even have a set of korker boots to walk to the bottom wet rocks to land their own fish. I totally agree with you, judge the situation, and use the right gear accordingly. This makaira is coming with me to a 36h tuna trip. Hopefully I can baptize it that way lol.
