71 years old… St. Catharines born and bred. Used to spend a lot of my summers visiting Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie. Neil Peart lived not far from me. Sadly the old midway has been gone for years and years now. But you can still walk the area by the beach, and ride on the famous merry-go-round carousel . Still only costs 5 cents.

To me the genius of the lyrics is how Neil wraps both the fun and innocence of the theme park and how experience with it made it old, then comes back around for how fond of a memory it was as part of his youth. Amazing
I know Geddy has said he thinks it is a lousy song, but I like it. We live on the other side of the Welland Canal, but go there often to walk our dog. I see the carousel, lighthouse, pier, willows, and last Sunday it was cold enough to build a fire.
i respect you, friend. Build that fire high, and let it wash away the smell of fish and seaweed and whatever the lake brings! We see what we love and what we remember, and its beautiful
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. I saw them in 1977 and 1978 at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Both amazing shows. This song has this brightness that shines through the wistful nostalgia, capturing the lost magic of growing up. And this video shows Rush in those days where they first were becoming big; the freshness and clarity of Neil’s drumming with Alex’s energetic riffs and Getty’s sharp bass playing, all carried by that high pitched voice articulatiing the precision of the Rush message, just took me back to my front row perch right in front of Alex Lifeson, for 2 1/2 hours of pure joy. The wonder of it never grows old!
Beautiful, this was the first Rush song I ever heard and turned me into an instant fan, what a wonderful journey it's been with Rush as a soundtrack to my life.
love the laser sounds at the end...it is cool that the early Rush performances were captured when they were young men with a raw energy before all of the stage production.
Makes me realize that Canadians had the exact same 1960/1970's experience as the U.S. kids did back then. I totally relate to this tune and grew up in the Midwest.
I still recall like it was yesterday the first time I heard Rush.. I was in my backyard one summer afternoon in the mid 70s and my friend Paul next door was blaring Lakeside Park out the window on his crummy little "Brand Names" stereo.. even on that shitty little nickel on the tone arm set up.. it was an absolute avalanche of chords and melody.. I was instantly hooked.. still am.. RIP Neil Peart..
Lakeside park was all that Neil wrote about. The original merry go round still exists but the town has died with a whimper. Neil went out with the bang of a drum but still lives on. Keep the music alive!
I saw Rush in March of 1975 at the Omni 41 in Schererville,Indiana with Areosmith...Rush was on their Fly By Night tour. But that night they opened with Bastille Day.I was a sophmore at Lake Central High in St. John,Indiana.Through out the years i have had the album on 8-track....cassette...1/4 inch reel to reel tape....LP....and now CD....To me when they aquired Neil as a drummer/songwriter.....they wrote their ticket to REAL fame.!! This is the album where I really got to know Rush. And this song, written from Neil Peart's boyhood memories of Lakeside Park, brims with love and discovery of a place in time and a band, just learning their chops...so new, yet to be that supergroup... just breaks my heart as I turn 59 this year, missing Mr. Peart and the words he weaved.. In all the history of man, weren't we all so blessed that we came up in the days of rock n roll, and DOUBLY blessed that we came up in the days of quadrophonic sound and in the days and night of RUSH! BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL RUSH!
Geddy didn't like this song but I have always loved it. I can see why he might not want to perform it especially later in his career because it would have to be a challenge to hit those high notes.
I bought this album when it was new on L.P. the old disc and turn table and although it's just a memory some memories last forever. R.I.P NEIL PEART 5.24.2022
Just too brilliant. Geddy Lee and Chris Squire from Yes made you wanna play a Rickenbakker bass like a weapon. The first gig I ever went to was Rush on Moving Puctures tour 1981, remains the best gig Ive ever attended. Only thing coming vaguely close was Radiohead in 2000. Prog rock rules.
This song is Neil Pearts life story, Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie Ontario was the dream job he landed back in the 1960's when he was a teenager. He loved the memory of growing up in St Catharines because of how it taught him that people are basically warm and decent. He was the god of all drummers but never lost touch with his roots as a small town kid
RIP to a local boy done good! Thanks to Neil and the band for some great memories from long ago. I am 54 years old and live 10k from Lakeside Park. It's not the same these days but I still ride the motorcycle over to the Port Dalhousie area and enjoy some great memories from growing up in the area during the 1970's.
@Sylvia isgod There is a carousel still there but all the rides from the 1960's and the concession stands are long gone. There is a lot of interest right now in St Catharines to put a statue of Neil Peart there.
I come here every year taking about my dad and how he remember my birthday from the song this is the first year that I didn't have my first grandchild born the 23rd of May preoccupied sure everybody dad would understand why
Love his Androgynous gender neutral voice he is a true tenor Altino a countertenor voice . He sound like a mix of a woman and a higher than typical tenor with almost boyish tone simultaneously
wow, this pretty epic. taurus pedals in Lakeside Park.. There are not a lot of Rush things that I haven't seen before. This is special. Honing their craft.
The Satanic Music industry didn’t promote this song. It was too pure and honest. Hanging out at the Lakeside with friends, and a pocket full of dimes to play the carnival games……
Wow -- this must be close to Ged's very first use of the taurus pedal --- which I had previously thought they used for the first time on the AF2K tour. It's not present at all on the AtWaS album --- so it must have been introduced later in the tour.
Neil brought me here - RIP...I have been a fan from the beginning; the only poster I had on my wall growing up came from my All the Worlds a Stage album. In those days...I read many fantasy novels and was tripping with the best of them - so the Tolkien theme they were experimenting with after Rutsey left the band spoke volumes to me as a teenager. You will be missed my friend...
That’s because Geddy has two other separate brains hidden in his nose. His main brain sings while one brain in his nose shreds the bass and the other controls his feet and the keyboards with them. This can only explain how he sings lead vocals, often with a completely different beat structure than the bass parts he shreds. That’s my theory anyway. I’ve seen them live on every tour since Permanent Waves and Geddy never misses a beat. It’s an amazing thing to watch. That why every Rush concerts were my favorite over all other groups from that time period that I went to.
I love the way the drums started out the song…a “slow “ song” started by drums is unique…and the advanced technique of Alex’s guitar play when all 3 guys were barely out of their teenage years…one of their best songs in my opinion.
Neil made good but 'not' overuse of the 6", 8" 10" concert toms. Truly cool fills especially where the song opens; leaving him a ripe opportunity to tie the gaps.
When I was a kid in the 70s, I had a drummer buddy who I jammed with a lot, and our favorite bands were Rush and Aerosmith. He was a great drummer and played the tenor toms in our high school marching band. This was kind of the coveted "first chair" position for percussionists in the band and he was clearly the best. But he was also like me, kind of a trouble-making rock and roller, so he'd frequently go off script and do things that pissed off the band director. One of those things was that during football games, as they stood on the sidelines and they were only supposed to play approved percussion "stings" at the appropriate moments in the action and lulls, he would catch my eye as I sat in the stands and play the intro fill to "Lakeside Park", or one of the fills from the intro to "Draw the Line" by Aerosmith. Every time the band director would shoot him a blazing dirty look, or walk over and chew him out, but he'd just smile and nod, because he knew he wasn't going to be demoted for it. He was too good. Still love this song and this whole album, and I can't hear it without smiling and thinking of my buddy Hugh.
@@stacyward4309 he may be awesome as a person (I don't know), I'm just saying he doesn't have a good singing voice. I don't sing well either. People are just born with a certain voice and it's kinda luck of the draw. So basically I think he's like the majority of human beings...who shouldn't be singers.
ok Geds voice wasnt the best then but who could deny all that talent??? they were definately a band to watch for back in the day. Neil was my hero from day one. Not only for his skills , but he possesd so much more as with those other 2 guys...great band and will always be remembered...at least by this old dog....Alex ,Ged and Neil will not be forgotten....ever.....
@tim sears - Well said! 😀 And yes, I too prefer Geddy's later vocal style. But he's also quite loud in the mix here, compared to the 'All The World's A Stage' version.

I think it may just be the strongest song on Caress Of Steel. Great lyrics about Neil's stomping grounds growing up.

@Brian Shaffner - Yes, I too am surprised to hear it here!
. . . makes one wonder if the Taurus is used to trigger the 2112 opening sequence.
Here I am again on my birthday 24 may. Makes miss my dad.
One of my favorite Rush songs. RUSH fan 4 life.....
Such a GREAT song!
I came for the bass lesson on this song.
I'm amazed by this intricate perfect playing while nailing the vocals.
Amazing voice.
Some memories last forever....
How cool is this !
I lived close to lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie and I also saw Rush before they had any albums out !
The musicianship on this live track is top drawer
2:50 Happy 5/24, y'all.
Wow what a voice Geddy has!
Yes he sound like a mix of a woman and a higher than a typical tenor with a boyish tone simultaneously into a Androgynous gender neutral
@@darealistmanchillin9463 sounds awful, haha.
@@jhaz89 oh shut up, he is awesome
@@stacyward4309 ever done dmt?
@@stacyward4309 he may be awesome as a person (I don't know), I'm just saying he doesn't have a good singing voice. I don't sing well either. People are just born with a certain voice and it's kinda luck of the draw. So basically I think he's like the majority of human beings...who shouldn't be singers.
you can hear 2112 starting at the end!
ONE HELL OF A BAND
ok Geds voice wasnt the best then but who could deny all that talent??? they were definately a band to watch for back in the day.
Caress of Steel.... my first RUSH album... but not my last... Giddy has one of the most recognizable voices in rock..
"Giddy"! I love that! 😄

All the world is a stage, RIP NEIL GREAT PERCUSSIONIST
Wish I could have heard it live. But they never played it at any of the shows I went to. Heard By-Tor, though. Rocked!
The quintessential power ballad. 🎉
filmed in the days before drummers, even with drum sets of severe size, were acknowledged as a part of a musical enterprise.
Saw them 1976 youngstown agora 2112 tour. Excellent concert
