Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.
LOL "we don't have much time, we're just gonna play 2112"
Seamus Slattery Most bands who play live do a 30 - 45 minute setlist. Rush do a 2 hours 30 minute setlist.
1 average song length: 3-4 minutes.
30 minutes x 5 = 2.5 hours
3 minute song x 5 = 15 minutes.
So... hmm... maybe that isn't a lot of time in Rush's standards. ;)

45 minutes? In a fucking fest, maybe… the featured artist on a full concert plays for two hours, regularly
adrian5b Maybe I'm too used to local bands who are limited to half an hour.
This footage should be in the library of Congress.
Absolute gold
The fact that this footage exists and this show had a pro-shot that was eventually uploaded to youtube is incredible to say the least.
The Capitol Theater provided "Twin screen video projections" for all live acts in the mid 70's ... I don't think that they were supposed to keep the tapes, but I'm sure glad that somebody did . This was my first concert, and I went to see Rush specifically .
This should be a national treasure of Canada...Geddy's vocals at their peak. And DAYUM the band is tight!
Yup.
And the Audio! Holy sh!t!! 😎✌🍻
@@RaymondBCrisp I'm not sure they ever wern't tight, but dayum this is crazy!

Drop the Rock and Roll,Neil Peart is the Greatest Drummer in History.
Alex is extremely underrated. He is one of the best Rock Guitarists of all time hands down
Alex's playing and tones on this are superb!
They all are exemplary musicians.
The best!!!
Alex got a little overlooked in the crowd of Van Halen clones that started to spring up in the 80's. However his playing has aged much better than any of those guys, and has far more character and creativity. His chord choices and riffs are often perfect - no idea how he writes some of that stuff.
Heimy Gloomstopin THATS why hes on the down low, he wasnt a cc deville living like a ' rock star' , his music comes first.like ted nugent.the establishment wants jimi hendrix's
"Thank you we dont have a lot of time tonight so we're gonna play a 20 minute song for ya"
To be fair, they (had to?) cut some parts from the original track :D
Mysterious Internet Guy was gonna like but it's at 212 likes.:) let's keep it that way.
It was then and still is there longest songs in their catalog, clocking in at 20:33 if they were to play the whole thing the concert would probably be too long.
CygnusX2112 Yeah I’ve noticed they would tend to cut out the “Oracle: a dream” section of the song to save time
tonyspro Yeah
Neil's mustache is currently on permanent display at the Canadian Museum of Natural History.
are you joking or are you serious?
gg
TOOOOP KEEEEK
Cullen Granger lmfao how creative how long did it take you to put that one together and make it work? or did you hear someone else say it?
yeah because I wanna see it. LOL

Luke S. This is simply fucking breathtaking ... fuckin hell!!!!!!!!! How can a band play that good
Hell yes!
@@voyagersa22 They started out as Children - Lol. Practice my friend, Practice and of course a Shared Vision.
There are things in this Universe we cannot explain. I just found out Neil passed. I'm crying...
Luke S. Absolutely
I'm sure there's many of us bass players on this thread. What makes Geddy so special, is not only his excellent playing, but some of the singing and bass parts are so far removed from each other, it is like he has 2 brains to process it
Always mind-blowing about that. Second i love Mr. Claypool.
Can you imagine writing and executing this kind of thing to this high a degree, at the age of 23? It’s just unbelievable. At 23 I still didn’t know how to tie a tie, and they were executing some of the wildest shit imaginable, so cleanly. Gods among men, these three were and are.
For 3 musicians that sounded like that together was absolutely incredible!
Any musician watching this knows how hard it is to pull off a song like this live, no sheet music, no reference other than the beat that the other bandmates are following and your own memory.
When you practice 6 hrs a day for 10 years you'll be able to play this, practice makes .. almost perfect, Buddy Rich was perfect lol
I did lighting for a cover band that played this to perfection in 81
The Mozarts of RnR and Geddy's voice was so special back then. Poor Geddy, he hasn't been able to sing this song in many, many years.
2112 is perhaps the greatest most complete (musically and lyrically wise) rock song in the history of rock music, how I wish I was there to witness this.
Fernando II de Taboada agree
You are 100 percent correct
My 16 year old self was there. My friend and I were blown away. When RUSH came back a few months later their performance was hotter than this one. This one ROCKS!
I was
Did Neil read Aldous Huxley or another Ayn Rand novel to inspire this?
8 people were so moved, they missed the like button
Geddy hits the second A above middle C at 10:04. Unbelievable. As a classical musician, I can tell you that any of these three brilliant men could have chosen any genre of music, classical, jazz, etc. and would have been at the very top of that genre.

1:52
You're right Scarlatti; the main reason for that is they are all Scholars of The Canadian College of Music. They are Brilliant musicians.
And they chose metal! 😀😀😀
I agree. As a former pro musician, hear me now and believe me later: these guys could have chosen any style of music and they'd have been totally brilliant at it. Thankfully for us they chose prog metal :)
@@davek5057 they chose music
I hear 2 or maybe 3 drummers, but I can only see one. Ah, forget. This is Neil Peart.
The first time I listened to 2112, it brought me to tears. The second time I listened to it, it changed the way I think about the world. The third time I listened to it, my head exploded from the pure, concentrated awesome.
there's one particular section in there that brought me to tears for the first 20 years that I had the album... thanks
6:40
Yes! Exactly! (I guess I'm not the only one!): The Presentation section which starts at 6:40. It perfectly expresses in a "tension and release" contrast, the dichotomy between the practical and the passionate. People can connect with it because that dichotomy applies to so many things in people's lives....including my own. It's good to know that I'm not alone in my deep appreciation of all of that.
@@seasonalweather You can't explain it better. Well said!
I can’t agree more. This is exactly how I feel! Their music changed my life and so many others.
they didnt have enough time so they decided to play 2112 .

+Ya Broni lol, it was the 2112 tour, pretty sure it was on the agenda.
+Ya Broni lol
+Ya Broni I think that was point to the joke. Rush were always word jokers that way.
+Ya Broni lol...made my day!!!
I guess you could say they were in a "Rush". XD
Geddy: We haven't got a lot of time tonight
Also Geddy: here's a twenty minute song
They actually did play the abridged version of 2112.
Those were the days!! Rush, Zeppelin, Stones, Bowie, Floyd, AC/DC, Queen, Springsteen, Yes, The Who, Fleetwood Mac and so many others. A time when rockstars mattered
Those rock bands cover several decades of music. True, pop stars get more limelight than current rock stars, but progressive rock is still well and alive. I would totally check out early Tame Impala and King Gizzard. Rush and Pink Floyd will always be my favorites though.
THE Mighty Van Halen ya big goof!!
I can’t even remember the amount of times I saw Rush, Yes and Tull over the years back then! Truly the pinnacle of music back then imo
@@Sithis6116 Yes is amazing! Watchu mean? One of the best prog rock bands ever. Third favorite after Floyd and Rush.
No Bruce !
RUSH's 2112 is one of the all-time greatest epic rock albums.
YES!
Can’t think of a better album. Even the songs that follow that were heavily criticized for being bland. I personally loved them.
It is!!
FUCK YEAH 🤘🏻
I saw this band about this time in a gym at a small catholic school. They opened up with 2112. It was my first concert at age 16.
Bastard...
My parents are 40 and still have not seen rush. They have seen Nirvana though
Your a very lucky person
Wow! To have seen Rush in those days would have been something. But your memory is wrong. Rush never played 2112 in a high school. by 1976 Rush was a headlining act playing to thousands of people.
Justin Klein I saw them at age 15 in San Diego. saw them 8 more times in 6-7 years. I can't express in words how amazing they were/are...
His voice has always killed me...I have loved Geddy's voice pre-Moving Pictures my whole life, amazing
what are you talking about?! it has gotten a lot softer and mature. he can't do/doesn't do the shrieks like he used to and lost his raspiness.
Same!
@@TheMKM Yeah, I think that’s what he was talking about. I also prefer the earlier Geddy - before he lost his ability to do this.
its an acquired taste. a lot of ppl hate his high pitched screaming. a lot of rush fans grew to like it but if u didnt grow up with this stuff it just hurts peoples ears. i understand it. i love it but a lot of ppl didnt start warming up to his voice more until he stopped screaming so high in the early 80s
Same! Love Geddy’s pre-Moving Pictures voice!!!
An all RUSH weekend in memory of Niel Peart. Was there ever a time in his life that he wasn't cool? I doubt it!!
SiriusXM deep tracks has been playing all Rush for 2 days.appreciate their true godliness even more.heard 2112 5 times

I think it's Solar Federation, but cool. It is a great finale.
You mean the United Federation of Planets from Star Trek?
George Estremera ...it is Solar Federation. Hopefully most people were able to get this on LP, where you had the lyrics plus the story to read along with it. I believe the viewpoint of “Jon” was how it was told.
2112
When he sings the part of the priests, his voice could split skulls and shatter stones. What a performance.
Its a shame Geddy'a voice could only hit these high notes for 4 or 5 years after this. God that voice is epic!
Saw them in May 1978 do this. Four rows from the front. Still a high point in my life.
There will never be another band like them it was a pleasure to have had them in my life

It’s a day I never wanted to see. I’m so glad I grew up to witness one of histories greatest bands. RIP Neil.
Came here to remember Neil. Thx for the footage. RIP Professor.
To be so moved by music, physically, emotionally, these Three were, geniuses. I'm honored to pour their sound into my ears right to my soul...
I have poured their sound into my ears and soul for over 40 years and continue to!
Oddly, it brings me to tears imagining what our Lord must think seeing what his creation can accomplish. Outstanding!!!!!!
And I've seen them a LOT.
i heard this song for the first time today. holy shit. genius
One drummer, one guitarist, one singer
There will never be another Rush - R I P
Triumph was Just as good, 3 man band. Just didn't put out as many albums. Canada Eh 🇨🇦
I saw them the night before, opening for Foghat in Springfield MA. It was 2 days after my 17th birthday. I had never heard of them. I almost forgot we were there to see Foghat. I went out and got the All The World's a Stage 8 track the next day. They absolutely blew me away.
I wore this album out twice.
Rob Allen only twice ?
Neil Peart - one helluva drummer.
I couldn't help but notice his amazing skill, not many drummers stand out in bands, Neil Pert is the exception that sets the bar.
Peart
Seen them over 20 times first saw them open for kiss i think 74 or 75 here in n.c. Even then Alex was up there with page and Clapton he's ahead of them now ,ged's bass playing is as good as it gets ,and Neil well no equal.i remember going to see kiss and left a rush fan rush blew them away.with a much shorter set.
The PRO-fessor!
Best drummer ever!!!
I saw this tour in the 70s at the Tower theater in media Pa. Rush concerts were the best. Saw them there 2 or 3 times at the Tower, a great venue for Rush not a bad seat in the house.
I had front row seats for Farewell to Kings tour at the Capitol. What an amazing show. Neil's drum set was huge, you could barely see him behind chimes, cymbals and other hanging percussion pieces. I have seen so many great groups there.
Rest easy, Neil. You're the GOAT.
The Rickenbacker days are still my favorite
I'm 18 and just recently got into Rush. My biggest regret is that I didn't hear them sooner and that ill never be able to see them in concert because it seems as if theyre done touring...
If this music doesn’t add energy to your day, then you are probably dead! Check for a heartbeat?
First concert I was allowed to go to with my friends when I was a kid. Saw this tour at Alpine Valley in '79 and was hooked on Prog rock ever since.
RIP Neal Peart.
Douglas Proce
😢 we all feel privileged to have witnessed these incredible geniuses. RIP Neil.
Shreddy Lee, Alex Riffson, Neil Treat! The ROLLy Trinity!!!
I’ve seen many live Rush concerts dating back to 1978, and live performances on UA-cam. This, in my opinion, is Rush at its absolute peak talent level. Geddy’s vocal range, bass tone, Neil’s power, timing, and speed, and Alex killing the solos - just absolute brilliance. Young, raw talent. It does not get better, just maybe a little more polished as they matured. Rush at its finest.
I am in grief as this band was my favorite of all time. Neil what a loss. I wish time could stand still, life is short at 67
The great masterpiece of one of music's greatest bands ever. Just a shame it's not the full version:
Rush - 2112
They just don't play _Oracle: The Dream_ that much, do they?
Yea, but sadly, thats the best part imo
Yet Soliloquy Is The embodiment of their force...
The sleep is still in my eyes, the dream is still in my head, I heave a sigh and sadly smile and lie a while in bed, I wish that it might come to pass, not fade like all my dreams.......Just think of what my life might be, in a world like I have seen..... Brings back great memories. Even though the world isn't as awesome as it was in the 70's and 80's, I wouldn't have wanted to be young at any other time in history because of music like this. I am one of the lucky ones who was there to see the greatest musicians in history playing the best music ever written. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
+Jeff Hurley No doubt bro. I was 13 when 2112 came out. A lot of stuff has influenced my tastes since '76, but every time I hear 2112, I have to listen and it sucks me in.......
+Ed Briggs I was born 20 years too late...
+Jeff Hurley 2112 is one of many Rush masterpieces. Too bad that the popular music now a days is terrible pop and bad desperate-to-sound-like-rock-even-though-their-pop tunes. When I hear people listening to modern music I think "Get your mind out of the gutter! Listen to some Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, anything from the era of great rock!"!
+Teiichi I was later to the Rush party.
How'd you like to have to follow that act? Best song they've ever played! My all time go to for picking up a adrenaline boost.. RIP Neil, your legend status has been secured!
nebraska islander Was at this show. Both Rush and Kansas were tremendous.
I would have been ashamed to pick up a guitar after that. Imagine being Peter Criss hiding in his dressing room trying anything to not hear the absolute onslaught that was the Professor.
I think Alex is just a young 23 year old here and he really shines... Amazing stuff from these 3 awesome musicians!!
Just read about Neal Peart. This was early Rush and brilliant.

The sound on this is great. Better than most live albums, it really feels like you’re there.
8:45 wow. He hits an A5. 17th fret on last string of guitar. Never heard him hit that b4 now. His voice was so high and limber back then.
I think that’s A6.
@@bigbrownhouse6999 An A6 is pretty much impossible to hit in chest voice 😂 although that would have been pretty damn cool. The note that Geddy hits there is in fact an A5.
@@medmac2112 I can’t tell what note he sings but 17th fret on the high E string of a guitar is A6

3 guys. Why does this sound like an Army. What a sound, aaaamazing.
that guitar solo from the Presentation Part is one of the most underated guitar solos. Full of emotions and technics. Definitely the most difficult "heavy metal" guitar solo at that time. even overcomes some of the famous guitar licks from 80s. Ahead of a curve. True genious Alex.

No threesome that has ever lived could even come close to replicating the sound of this. I dare say you couldn't find a single person to reproduce any one of the individual parts. Each of them was singularly unique and eminent.
Goddamn Geddys voice was just KILLER. Insanely cutting.
Will never forget picking up my buddy Todd. Had this cessette on. He opens up the door and said “what you listening to”….2112….who’s winning. 😂45 years or so ago. Miss those days

I wish there was a better quality video of 2112 from this era out there somewhere. That said, I’m still very grateful we have this!!!!!
This was a 3 piece band never to be seen again. I didn’t discover Rush until 1979 but thank God I did
RIP Neil Peart.... almost 44 years later and this song still rocks !!!!!!!!
My musical world began with these songs back in the late 70's on All the Worlds a Stage double LP. So saddened to hear of Neil's passing wishing I knew him and he of me, then I remembered, Neil wrote all Rush's lyrics and realized he knew all of us and we knew a bit of him. He can certainly rest peacefully a complete man.

Whoever recorded this did an exceptional job. This is awesome!
If there is one show I could ever go back in time just to see, it would be Rush in their prime. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see them at all, as I’m 27 and didn’t come to really appreciate them until recently when I got serious about my own guitar and bass playing. Each one of them are both intricate and powerful in their own right, yet complete eachother perfectly and are irreplaceable. They’re all lead players, and somehow it works flawlessly.
