      MasterOot there's a ton of variation and regional specialties throughout the entire island for these never to end. This is in stark contrast to what they used to say about how one note Korean and Japanese food were compared to Chinese food. used to cringe at that but better late than never!

    Ive watched a few channels where people eat/taste test various foods but, there is something about Mike that really makes it a joy to watch. The expressions with each bite are great, also he's not afraid to say when he doesn't like something, and he describes the experiences well. I love this channel.

    That runny egg is called onsen-tamago (literally "hot spring egg"). It is 'cooked' at a pretty low temperature for a really long time; between 30min and 1h at around 60°~70°C.

      +Panic! At The Fall Out Pity Party It's just overwhelming that they'd add in cakes and desserts for a breakfast buffet. But you have a point, it is a buffet after all. No way can you stop yourself from eating that much.

    • @ohdaUtube
      @ohdaUtube 7 років тому +34

      DindonPoo the other thing is, the avg Japanese person's portion size is not very large. That's why the price seems lower. Mike is basically overeating by a lot by Japanese standards. =) but that's a big part as to why they live so long

    That tea you were drinking is called Citron which is huge in Japan.

    • @juandenz2008
      @juandenz2008 7 років тому +5

      The katakana says shi-to-ron I think, is it tea made from the citron fruit ? Searching online suggests it might actually be made from a different fruit, Yuzu, but is still called citron.

    • @HappySnoutHour
      @HappySnoutHour 7 років тому +11

      Yes, Just because something is written in katakana doesn't necessary mean that's how it is said or spelled in English. For example utopia in Katakana is spelled ryu-to-pi-a. To answer your second question it is a citrus fruit which is added to tea, desserts, etc. (much like how lemon is added to tea in the US) which is why it is really refreshing. I've never tried it but from what all my Japanese friends have told me it is very popular and delicious.

    • @juandenz2008
      @juandenz2008 7 років тому +5

      Thanks for the information, yes I know about katakana and how it doesn't always correspond to English, I was just adding that for information purposes !! I hope to try some of that tea some day, is it the same as what Korean's call yujacha ?

      Practice at home first to get more comfortable just speaking about what you are eating, then go for it. If you have passion about what you are doing, then everything else will just become "white noise" don't pay it any of your attention.

    It's finally happened!! He used the word "balanced" and didn't ask for hot oil!!! I love that he's appreciating a wider range of food these days!! and yes, can't compare cheap instant Japanese in the states to real Japanese. things closer to real Japanese does exist in nyc you just have to avoid the really cheap knock offs. also, just because it's pricy doesn't mean it's good Japanese either as too many have tried to capitalize and bastardize it. you'd only know if you are familiar with the culture or have Japanese friends who know what they're talking about. It's like comparing a cheap instant noodle to one of the great Chinese noodle dishes.

    Number 1 key to buffets is go with people who love to eat. If you don't they finish before you and then you're pressured to either eat quick while they sit there waiting or leave when they're done and you're still not close to full. But wow, Japanese breakfast looks amazing. That soup with rice and little bits of fish looks heavenly.

  • @Changelingheart
    @Changelingheart Рік тому

    I love when Mike creates his own bites to taste or improve the flavor or dryness of a food item. Like when he added various items to the sushi rice and soy base broth soup. Started with fish but then...etc!!!😎 The inner cook in him and my brother and I did this as kids too. I still do to this day!!💜

    I just love how honest and real you are, while so pleasant and positive. Everything you do and talk about is so legit, so I can trust that a review you give is not just sugarcoated to please (as in every video showcases only what's good, and there is a ton of editing to bring out only the best) but the real thing...I went here, I tried that, it wasn't what I thought, but this was really good, etc. That's why I subscribe to you and support. Do it, Mickey!

    I'm watching you describe the hotel breakfast buffet from your room. I really didn't get the impression you were happy with the buffet. So nice to hear you tell us it was basically great, especially the cost!! $20 is fantastic!!! Anyway, I think what you did is point out foods to avoid and some to choose. When you showed all the items at the end we got the WHOLE picture. Certainly much to choose from and definitely showed the Japanese foods.

    The trick to great French toast is very slow cooking on low heat, covered, and then brown it at the end with lots of butter.
    Conversely the trick to a great French omelette is high high heat, and you cook it for only 10 seconds. Also with plenty of butter.

    I don't know why I lost it when Mike ate the macaron. His face after he popped that macaron baby in his mouth for me was just regret like "what did I just eat?!"

    We don't usually remove bones in Asian cuisine because the bone gives amazing flavour to the dish that the meat can't give on its own.

    I would have loved the selection of jams too. It would have been great if they had the jars for sale in a gift shop if you found one you really liked!

    That reads Shitoron, or I think Citron! And Oishii is Yum!! in Japanese. And the Japanese remove the bones with they're 箸 or chopsticks before eating it, different from the Chinese chopsticks who they like to grab a LOAD of food and there are many different types of MISO soups which is 味噌in 漢字 or KANJI, and that has a 鰹節出汁 or a Bonito broth broth and sugar in it which makes it sweet, and there is the Soba wheat tea.. and I think that my favourite tea apart from the Lapsang Souchong!! That is great tea mate!!

    You know you're a professional eater when between dishes you pop your knuckles and get the, "Let's do this!" look on your face.
