This is one of four or five active loading positions in the mine. The mine is computer dispatched to maintain a constant ore grade going into the plant and the computer only allows so many trucks to each shovel per hour. The plant can only take so much ore per day. This is the first step in controlling the grade of the final taconite pellets. A larger shovel and two side loading would have no advantage. A high volume position would have two side loading and a lot more trucks. Iron ore has been mined in this pit for over 125 years.

jimmy Cahill with a shovel you load off the cut floor. With an excavator you would have to be on top of the material, compacting the material you trying to load. Also, shovels are inherently more efficient, the cycle of operation for an excavator is, 1 filling the bucket, 2 lifting the load, 3 swinging the load, 4 dumping the bucket (which has to be done by hydraulic cylinders), 5 returning the swing, 6 lowering the empty bucket to start the next cycle. Then consider the cycle of the shovel, 1 filling the bucket and lifting the load is one step, 2 swinging the load, 3 the bucket is emptied by a trip and is instant and uses little energy, 4 return the swing, 5 lowering the bucket to start the next cycle. One less step ( or really two less steps because emptying the bucket is so quick) each cycle. Less compaction and less cycle steps mean shorter cycle times. Shorter cycle times means higher production.
Rope machines are less complex and are generally more reliable so cost per ton can be less. They also have a longer lifespan than hydraulic machines. It’s a trade off with the power, flexibility and mobility of hydraulic machines depending on the application
What a waste of time. Any real shovel people know that this rig should be loading off of the lest side , and not the right in this circumstance. Better yet, they should be loading off BOTH sides. These folks would never have made it in my Day.

Huge bucket and 6 (six!) passes - how I love that ...
It is a good heavy machine. They are cool. I enjoyed the video.

How far away is the generator providing power to the shovel?
the shovel moves in its own power
@ 3.20 is he picking out all the big lumps ...lol
Mucha vuelta!
Whats the benifit of this type of machine over a hydraulic excavator?

#Bucyrus power class
Big Bucyrus
Speed loading is not always admirable or necessary. And yes, this maybe the oiler learning to operate!
Shovel is turning almost 180 degrees to load. Should have spotted truck on the left. Operator not efficient
Electric cable maybe?
You always load on cab side can’t see left side very well boom in the way
The operator must be a learner. No way with that fragmentation you're taking that long
Yup, he just now learning how to run the machine. Long swings and bucket is to high.

See +B Laquisha's comment. They aren't in any hurry.
