Old fashioned hard labor by machines. Controlled by an operator in an air conditioned, noise insulated cabin. Very old fashioned, indeed. Soon to become ai assisted, remote operated for more of that good old fashionedness

It's about 15 years old, maybe 15-20 years. These machines are often working 20 years before being changed. Terex purchased the O&K company around year 2000. Now it is CAT that owns and manufacture these machines. RH170 is now called 6040. Manufactured in the same factory in Dortmund, Germany all the time since it was called O&K.
@@byronclown6097 14 hour days sucks sometimes, never done mining but worked in oil and it was a 12 hour shift but an hr drive there and a hr drive home and stops in between etc turns out to be a 14+ hr work day

Standing in a blind spot for the operator by a drop off he is digging on, I would place my self differently. Stripping coal overburden and keeping costs down to make electricity cheap, no money to hose it down or replace body panels on any of the equipment. Everything there has that "Hard Worked and put away wet" patina.
The beast in the background is a bucket wheel excavator, the biggest earth moving machine on the planet. But the RH 170 is one of the smaller ones in the Terex lineup, the RH 400 being the biggest weighing in at 900 metric tons
The poor thing will probably slave away drenched in own muck until it's junkyard time :( Sad sight, it can't be a very old machine and appears to be operated smoothly.
When you look at this in comparison, how many shovelfuls of dirt, that would equate to one bucket full, Now I know how President Nixon felt when he visited Beijing China, Landing in a snow storm stepped outside Air Force One and notice that the entire terramac, was snowflake clean,, on a second look he noticed 10,000 Chinese with whisk brooms, and dustpans lining the Landing Strip, I don't recall what Time Magazine stated what his first thoughts were! but I'm sure it was Oh s*** we got some competition.😁
I struggle to find how removing so much overburden to get down to coal can be profitable. The cost to remove it then the cost to dig out the coal can’t be that far off the price of coal when sold surly
Look up german bucket wheel excavator if you want to see THE largest overburden machine ever built at 15,000 tons. It can remove 200,000+ cu/yd per day. In this video look at that ocean of black behind this shovel. That layer might be 500 ft deep or more. There is plenty of cash in the ground there
@@frankcrawford416 machine you are thinking of was known as big muskie. Largest walking dragline ever built. Weight estimate is around 13,500 tons. Both are awe inspiring

This is one great machine from the past or maybe the future, dont judge a piece of equipment by the color of its skin, really great
Strong and unstopable

A battle hardened machine.

I really have no clue but it’s dual motor so my guess is 100 gal hr.

On a coal mine I worked at they said that each dump truck had 50k of coal on it.. much bigger trucks then this though. In Australia.
