- Air Force One is probably the most recognizable plane in the world. While the VC25Bs, which will be designated Air Force One when the president is onboard, won’t be delivered until 2024, some details about the upgrade are already in the public domain. Here’s what we know about the replacement Air Force One so far.

The 747-8 is a fabulous machine, so glad they’ll be flying for decades to come.
I agree with you. For me, the 747-8 is one of the best aircraft in the world
I'm glad that the Queen of the Skies will still be airborne for many many years to come!
Really?
@Chris Kibb paint job isn’t official yet
I can think of a dozen things America needs more than this plane. Btw, the United States military exists by and for one reason. To protect the dollar. No weapon in thier arsenal is more powerful. Take care.
Sadly, the King if the skies won't.
@@drivenbyrage5710 The president is going to need a plane. And if you look at the cost of keeping the current ones flying you can buy new planes pretty easy. The US air force is about the only people still flying the-200 series. I just looked not one 200 is flying right now. Even cargo companies are getting rude of them. The new parts inventory is gone and they have to resource or make new parts. Even the doomsday planes may not make it much longer. This is not a B52 that sits on a flight line 90% of the time.
Taking away the on air refuel capability is a big mistake.
No it isn't.
Dont they still have the Doomsday plane so its all good if they need a mobile war room
It'll be nuclear powered. 😁
@@ce1834 you mean the E4-B? It's older than the air force one to be replaced
@@RobbieIsbell A nuclear powered 747? What? Since when?
Surprised that it won’t have the mid air refuel capability.
I'm also shocked. This should definitely be a "no questions asked" feature. Dam.
It does seem like an odd omission. Part of me can /sort/ of understand the reasoning (note "understand" does not equal "agree with"): the current aircraft were spec'd toward the end of the Cold War, so being able to stay airborne indefinitely in the event/threat of a nuclear exchange or some other global catastrophe would have been important. When the specification for these aircraft was being put together, that kind of exchange was considered a more remote possibility, the west having spent the last two decades in asymmetric conflicts. I could see someone deciding the aircraft was less of a contingency plan and more just a VIP transport... and the 8 has plenty of range to deal with that. Of course, since then everyone has been swinging back toward gearing up for a peer-state conflict again, so that sort of thinking is suddenly looking out of date itself.
I wonder how much money that omission actually saved.
Doesn't make sense does it ?
In the years that the current planes have been flown, at no time has the aerial refueling ever been used while a passenger was on the aircraft. It’s simply thought to be too dangerous a task to be used with the President aboard unless no other option is available. In the mean time, it means that the maneuver must be practiced by the pilots over and over again on a regular basis since it is a skill that requires very regular practice to remain proficient. Finally, this bird will have huge range with hours of loitering time as built since it will come with enlarged fuel tanks etc. That is if they don’t want to fly it fast since it will be one of the fastest airliners remaining in the skies. But that’s a different discussion.
So it’s probably a reasonable thing to leave off the aircraft.
@@Bill_N_ATX That’s a fair point. Isn’t it safe to say however that AF1 has a lot of other features that never get used as well? Same with the Beast, it never had to drive on just the wheel with no tire, but it can if needed to keep the president safe.
I like the "Jackie Kennedy" color scheme.
I do as well. Only a putz like Trump would say something like he did.
Outdated though. It looks very art deco.
the baby blue looks geahhh, doest look American at all
@@scottyee707 but it looks very Air Force One-ish
And because Trump lost it's staying.
I am pleased and very proud they are using the Boeing 747-800! The 747 has always been the Queen of the Skies. Its beautiful, recognizable and majestic just like the American Eagle!
I really hope the livery doesn't change. Rejecting dark colors was done specifically because Kennedy thought it was too regal, too monarch-ish. George Washington originally wore a baby blue ribbon across his chest to distinguish his rank as commander in chief, so I think it has a cool precedent. The well placed swoops give the plane an eliminate of moving forward, echoing the American spirit of progress, where the new scheme is very static. Plus, the polished aluminum accent is so unique. I have a hard time believing anyone could look at the new scheme and say its more interesting and dynamic than the current one that has remained iconic for half a century.
Air Force One has been painted as such for more than half a century. It and photographs of it are synonymous with America, it has been there for every major foreign, and many domestic historic events. It is a part of our culture now. Personally I think it projects a level of self confidence that strong colors which scream, "look at me, fear me," cannot. It is a tradition ten presidents have honored, I cannot think of any good reason it is not good enough for the 11th.
That said, I'm glad it does not have black or gold in it, and at least the dark blue and red has a traditional nautical feel to it (and of course American). If I was lucky enough to own a yacht it'd have a dark blue hull. But it feels super basic and boring, like it is trying too hard to be strong. Or if you told a 10th grader to come up with a color scheme this would be it. And again, the static feeling of the straight lines doesn't compare to the swoops that invoke forward movement and progress that our country traditionally has valued. Maybe if they could lighten the blue a bit more?
your comment that the dark colours looking 'monarch-ish' is appropriate because Chump is trying to create a monarchy for the USA. He hates democracy, and doesn't believe in it. I doubt, however, if he got his way, the monarchy would be passive, such as that in the UK, but more like a dictatorship (North Korean style).
@@sgthree Haha. Trump will indeed do that!😂
Should paint that sumbitch solid black ! I would also put the grim reaper on the tail. I mean if you're going to make a statement....MAKE IT COUNT !
AF1's beautiful color scheme was designed by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, who designed a number of American icons, include the Coca Cola bottle, GM's Scenicruiser bus, various Studebakers, logos for TWA, Shell Oil, Exxon, USPS--the list goes on. That blue was picked by Jackie Kennedy, and should be retained in her memory. Donald Trump has no knowledge of this--or respect for history.
@@Greatdome99 It seems he does know that as he said it’s “too Jackie Kennedy”. I don’t have any issue with changing the livery. I’d want the new planes to look new. Even American icon brands change their logos and designs occasionally.

Definitely the Jackie look is more classy. By the comments here im one of many who wish to see the legacy continue
Af1 will be done just in time for our real President to come back.
Yeah, it's an outdated 1960's look.
No
Yes, absolutely, the 747-800 is a excellent choice to continue the AF1 fleet. The "Queen" of the skies is one of the most reliable and safe airframes flying and with a 40 plus flying history, these will serve the U.S. for many decades. The 747 is an amazing airplane to fly and is very forgiving.
I hope they change their mind on the livery to something more modern. It looks like an 90s simple design.
Strangely, the Kennedy livery looks more modern.
Livery is not only generic and classless...it removes the intent of the original design that the specific blue blends with the sky
That new livery looks like a tube of Colgate toothpaste
Agreed. The Lowry design is timeless and, after so long, iconic.
Nikki Haley is going to be the first president to fly on that. Watch it happen.

The new paint scheme/livery looks remarkably similar to Trump's private 757 livery. That being said, I prefer the AF1 old livery. Maybe a slight refresh is needed, but not a complete redesign to a classic.
For the most part, the colors are just inverted, But Trump's plane looks a lot better.
It is the Trump Shuttle livery.
Yea it’s a bad livery
@calodo2002 Technically, Trump could lose this cycle and win the next, being the first to fly in it.
@calodo2002 he has done nothing illegal. Other people have done far worse and have not repercussions.
I loved the old color scheme but I also look forward to the new scheme. Looks great in my opinion.
The older, blue paint scheme will stay
I can't recall the exact reasons but the very dark blue for the underside was going to cause (thermal?) difficulties along the fuselage I read somewhere. Anyway, I'm happy they reversed that choice back to the traditional scheme.
Glad we will keep 747’s as Air Force One, however, I don’t believe in changing the paint scheme, the current paint scheme is iconic, everyone who sees it knows its USA, somethings shouldn’t change!

I agree that it's iconic, but IMHO the chromed lower area was looking a bit dated.
Nothing really screams "Air force 1"
Without that iconic baby blue color
Saving money is one thing, but forgoing capability by omitting air refueling capability is another. I don't think this was a wise choice.
I wouldn't let him negotiate anything. Too many bankruptcies, lies, etc.,
The only time AF1 need to use the the refuel function is when US soil is being attacked and need to keep planes in the sky for extended period of time. If that is the case, President most likely will be in the E-4B 747, “flying pentagon” which can stand up against a nuclear blast and has refueling. Regular 747 AF1 can’t stand up against nuclear blast. More reasonable to save $1.4B then having a function that will never be used even in time of war.
I agree if another terrorist attack like 9/11 happens the safest place may well be the skies like they were for George W Bush and goodness knows how long it can stay airborne. also if an emergency happens and the US president was perhaps in Australia or halfway to us in the UK and an emergency happens with no time for stopovers or immediate turnarounds the plane may run out of fuel so definitely not the wisest choice. also what's another billion dollars even if it doesn't get used. safety should be priority for any leader no matter if you like them or not.

I doubt any president would want to spend 20 hours plus on a plane
Safest plane in the air~? Are you off your head?
There's no need for aerial refueling when, in a national emergency, the President would be moved to an E-4B anyways (E-4s have the capability, too).
Did not know that actually. thanks for mentioning that. I thought mid air refueling was a bad thing to take out to start but didnt realize the president uses a different plane in an emergency. one problem tho. what if the emergency happens mid flight and they cant risk transferring him to the other plane on the ground? I still think they should keep mid air refueling on the main air force one just for the fact that we can never forsee the future. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
@@ryannfodrea632 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the Air Force would always plan for the VC-25 AF1 to be within range of scores of friendly/secured bases or airports to choose from - impossible to attack all of them at once. Some ground element like the National Guard would secure any of these locations in a pinch. Not only does that lower the risk of an attack upon landing, but the attackers will also be confused as to which specific vehicle the President was transferred to (multiple AF1s, Marine Ones, etc).
@@eddietat95 I suppose ur right. Not all that likely to be an issue. I just thing it would be better to be prepared for the absolute worst. What if a lot of bases aren't operational for whatever reason?
Think E-4B = warplane and VC-25 = comfort plane. The Air Force really doesn't want the President to be on the VC-25 for too long during an attack.
@@ryannfodrea632 No, you're right in a way. In some terrible scenario where VC-25 is either damaged or otherwise out of range of a secured LZ, then it may go down without aerial refueling. That would be more likely abroad where allies may deny airspace as they please. In that case, the Air Force majorly screwed up somewhere else (lack of air supremacy, bad intel/planning/coordination, unchecked airspace, etc.).
Best choice.....ultra reliable, structurally solid and have great handling characteristics.

You can't always know before takeoff, or at pre-flight briefing, exactly how and where the aircraft will be employed for the duration of the coming flight. These aircraft (and their passengers and crew, for that matter) have to be entirely flexible and adaptable for whatever comes their way, whether on leg one of twelve, or on an extended campaign flight that turns into the last flight at the end of the world. Don't go and think you're qualified to determine what the plane needs and does not when you're not one of the people being paid to think ahead to the unthinkable.
I imagine they’ll end up with a fleet of four. Two VC25Bs and two modified Overtures

A jet black would be pretty cool. Lol.
I think it's probably the best choice for AF1. 4 engines for redundancy, though I'd love to have seen a 7779x as the next AF1. The 747 also offers the upper deck for the added communications and defense systems/monitoring.
But next time Air Force One needs replacing, there won't be any four engined planes to choose from. A380 is ending production (and insistence on final assembly in the USA "for security" scuppered any chances of an A380 anyway), and 747 is also ending. There's nothing left. Next time will have to be either something like 777X or competing/successor aircraft, or modify a four engine military transport aircraft.
@@owensmith7530 Will worry about that when we are all in nursing homes.
Nothing about redundancy. All about electrical power.

@@owensmith7530 Twins these days (like 777X or 787) can fly almost anywhere under extended ETOPS rules. And I doubt AF1 - being non-commercial - would have to follow ETOPS rules anyway.
When the president is on board, the aircraft is only designated “Air Force One” if it is an aircraft operated by the Air Force.
The helicopters that potus uses to get from the white house to the airport is operated by the marines and is designated “Marine One”
And if for some bizarre reason the president should get on board any non-military aircraft (United, American or Delta) it will be designated “Executive One”
Thank you! Never knew that.
@@maga6252 Furthermore, the "(Service) 1" callsign applies to any military aircraft bearing the POTUS, not just the familiar USAF and USMC aircraft. When G.W. Bush flew out to meet a carrier, the plane became "Navy 1."
Will they put mcas on it? To make it "safer"
Good choice
Keep the color scheme
New paint job looks like any commercial airliner
No stand out feature
No WOW! Factor
Let’s keep the original blue and white color scheme
Right, the soul purpose of those colors is to blend within the sky. That is why Mrs. Jackie chose the colors.
Looks LOVELY the NEW 747-8
Keep the current livery. It’s timeless and beautiful!
The white red and blue pattern looks like something from a 90's movie.
White red and blue? Do you seriously not know our nations colors? It is red, white, and blue. Not white red and blue.
@@jwilde801 do you seriously not think before you speak? I was describing the color in order from top down.
@@jwilde801 you’re like trump. You talk more than you think.
According to available information it is supposed to cost 3.950.000.000 and not 5.300.000.000() Which is ±22% less..
Can you confirm ?deny ?thks
The graceful lines of the 747-8 will work brilliantly with the curves of the iconic livery. It’s going to be beautiful!
4:10 ohhh the sweet irony that the future Air Force ones where meant for Russian airline 🤣🤣🤣
The real irony is that it was done somehow to save money when most of the cost is in the avionics, communication and defensive systems that go in regardless.
@@bobbymanganaro no this post is iconic
@@TheMelbournelad Still no irony here. You might want to avoid terms you don't understand.
@@user-cy2iq1gl1t So, if by doing something simple, on a multi-billion-dollar contract, you're saying it's trivial to try to save 10-15M? This is why you are poor and don't know what irony is.
@@Nerval-kg9sm 🤷♂️ I prefer the Alanis Morissette school of irony.
Could you make a video about the old dc 9 aircraft from klm still flying in Mexico?
I LOVE the new paint job. Very classy. Very American.
Keep the traditional paint scheme! Otherwise, "If it ain't Boeing... I'm not going."
"If it ain't Boeing.... I'm not going."
Umm....have you been following the aviation news the last couple of years?
The new plane spend a lot of time near by me back in 2019/2020 in the Melbourne FL. Northrop Grumman facilities
I really hope they don't use that godawful new paint scheme. The original graphics look far better - in addition to the fact that it's how every Air Force One plane has been painted since jet aircraft started being used as a presidential transport.
Incorrect, it was originally silver with (ironically) an orange nose
Wrong and stupid
Not true. The original Air Force one looks completely different. JFK’s wife change the design when her husband was president. And thank God the horrible baby blue design is going bye-bye. The United States should have a plane that is painted red white and blue. Anything else it’s just stupid.
Still love the old livery
What I like is that they like to give the inside away and how it works and how it runs and that's nice for the president when people want to attack him
Hopefully it isn’t painted yet and the proper paint scheme will be used.
They’re scheduled for delivery in 2024. They don’t get painted until they’re done. This is 2021. Biden can just tell Boeing to use the current livery.
Now we should be able to go back to the old scheme
@@maxwellheadroom8335
I was relieved when the subject of AF-1 paint came up in yesterday’s presser. So, yeah I realize paint is a late process. (I didn’t know how far out delivery is.)
I’d hate to think that as a change order, changing back would result in a line item extra.
I assume it will be the fabulous sky blue. That scheme is on many aircraft, not just AF-1.
The previous Air Force One is a statement of class and timeless design. The red and blue tones used for this new design are just too commercial and feels more appropriate for a fast food brand. 🤷🏻♂️
In my humble opinion the 747 is the sexiest plane ever made. It looks like a majestic seagull that absolutely belongs in the air. Good choice! I'm not an American but I also think that the old livery should have stayed.
I hope after the new Air Force ones are in service that they next replace the Air Force two from the current 757s to new 787s
A 787 BBJ is crazy expensive. Just see the Mexican Presidential Plane (which was a prototype 787) and still had a crazy price tag.
Unlikely, 757 can get into short fields that a 787 wouldn’t be able to, plus, the 757 is such an awesome airplane!
The 787 is way to big to get into the places the 757 can. The 757 can get in and out 4,000 ft runways.
By that time, it might end up being a SpaceX Starship. They're making crazy progress on the spaceship assembly line.
This paint job is basically the same as Trump's private plane just reversed.
@Chris Kibb Boss move. Deal with it 😂
@Chris Kibb 🤣🤣
@@lbennhtx6072 its not a boss move, its an ego move.
We'll see if it ever gets the Trump colors, The current colors are iconic and everyone knows who's plan it is the POTUS. The Trump colors are boring and common place looks like every other cargo jet.
@@joeschmidt5086 those colors are the T brand. Maybe he can paint his cell those colors, but leave AF-1 alone.
I like this, about time for an upgrade.
The new livery I feel better represents the U.S. as it has the colors of the flag and it has a much cleaner finish.
