Thorfinn was born in early 996 and joins Askeladd's band of mercenaries in 1002 when he's only six years old. The exact years for the scenes during his montage aren't known, but it is the year 1008 when Thorfinn is taken in by the English woman and her daughter, which would make him twelve at the end of this episode. At this point Thorfinn has now spent roughly as much time with Askeladd as he did with his own family.
the voice acting for this anime is phenomenal. young thorfinn yelling out his first kill will always be an all timer, almost metaphorically crying out his loss of innocence
@@LuisSierra42 I don't know, man. AOT was my first anime and I watched it in dub and except a few episodes in season 3, dub is up there with sub even though the hate it keeps getting (in my opinion).

the women and her daughter saving thorfinn parralleling his mother and sister was so good. and then the absolutely tragic yet beautiful scene when thorfinn sees the women in the crowd and the magnitude of the situation sets in, thorffin yells out that they should've left but the women simply stands there and cries, as she sees the absolute monster that this little kid has turned into. a mellow piano tune plays and there's this short moment of peace as we focus on the two of them, the women whose face is stained with tears, and thorfinn's with blood. vinland saga is a goddamn masterpiece. loving your vinland saga videos and can't wait for more!!
Father, "you have no enemies." Thorfinn, "become a killing machine?" Father, "a true warrior doesn't need a sword." Thorfinn, "wield two daggers then?"
This episode highlighted that Thorfinn _did_ have a choice to escape this lifestyle and find his way back home, but he still chose to stay. At the same time, he's just a misguided child that doesn't fully understand the consequences of his actions. It's sad and complex.
yeah he didnt just choose to stay. hes straight up signaling to them where to attack. helping them committ the same tragedies they committed unto him. this is the episode he realizes what hes doing and decides ends up deciding his grudge is more valuable then other peoples lives.
I just love how this episode subverts the revenge plot and the hero's journey in every possible way. This is where I started falling in love with this show.
Vinland Saga is truly one of the best seinen Manga ever. There are no simple "good and bad" guys. Like real life, everyone has their motivations and desires, whether those lead to good or ill things. This anime will put you through the emotional ringer. Glad you're enjoying it.
I forgot about this episode. Actually I forgot how deep this whole series actually is, I cried a lot at the end of the reaction. Thank you! That Grandma/mother had to see the truth about Thorfinn herself, because even though she knew, she still refused to believe that a child would be so far gone. Man, I want so say so much but don't know how to say it. This episode really hit me.
Yeah this story is beautiful in a way that it shows realistically what lust for revenge can do to a person(or honestly any negatie feeling can do to a person when it takes over your life). Thorfin in his mind is seeking justice, realistically...he is becoming sb that kills parents of innocent children. He IS a kid tho, currently raised in not a very peaceful manner, so all of his actions do make sense, it is just tragic, coz everyone can see he is a slave to pain and anger and didnt process a single thing in all these years, and we all know - his dad d be extremely sad to see all of this. His dad gave up his life for the ability of Thorfin to go back to his family and live a peaceful life, not for this.
just for clarification, at the end, the lady does see Thorfinn and cries, then she eventually left (or worse...), but Thorfinn kept seeing her there, as some kind of allucination or more like an image in his mind that he couldn't be able to erase
A subtle (and depressing) detail: the only words of English Thorfinn knows are 'Run away'. Think about that. Also, while Thorfinn and Eren are both grey characters, they're grey in very different ways. Eren's well aware of the weight of his actions. Thorfinn's just a confused child blinded by revenge.
i absolutely love watching you both react to my favorite series of all time! this episode was so powerful, it definitely hammers home how wrong it is for a child to be going through all of this. as cool as it is to see how strong he's gotten, it's so wrong for him to be on this path... if things were a little different, he could have just stayed with that family and lived a peaceful life, but then he chose to give the signal to askeladd because all he wants is that chance to avenge his father. but he can only recall his father's face, not the lessons thors was trying to teach him :(
Remember, Thors said to his son, "You have no enemies". This is what Thorfinn isn't understanding, he's drove with revenge but in the end, will this revenge benefit his life or will Thors be satisfied in the heaven? I don't think so. Thors also said "a true warrior doesn't need a sword" which means someone who is a true warrior does not need bloodshed to be great. Does not need to end the lives of others. There are other ways to be a great warrior, like taking care of your family, building paradise among the society etc sadly, warriors in the show think it's an honour to be in the war, it's normal to them but the show is trying to teach us that they're wrong
This is one of the series that will make you think about the protagonist simply being a product of his time period and the journey if he will continue being one, or refuse and become someone else.
Hey Ange, you're mixing two quotes from Thors, ome is "A true warrior needs no sword", and the other one is "you have no enemies". Being those two meaning basically "you don't need to kill people to protect the ones you love"
Did you know that Viking is a verb? People who wage war, plunder and live on that battlefield are vikingar, or (vikings) people doing viking. (think of it like hiking, just... A lot scarier)

just a little easteregg if you will Thorfinn is so surprised by seeing that strange and beatiful creature (the dog), because in his homeland there were no such type of animals, while England is full of dogs, as we can see right now how a lot of the main races of dogs came from there
also keep in mind that even if all the characters are talking japanese, sometimes they don't understand each other because the danish people are talking with english people. So the lady basically was talking to Thorfinn in English but he has no idea she was saying haha

he's a complicated character for sure, a morally grey one, he's not a good person but also has many redeeming qualities. I feel he's written as very realistic for the time period/setting
