I still cannot believe 10 years have already passed... I'm glad you also talked about the involvement of both Eric Knudsen and the Marble Hornets team; having them and the game devs work together was like having everyone that put this mythos together for a last hoorah. Just one small correction: despite popular belief, Marble Hornets did not have any proxy in it. Masky, Hoody and Skully looked like ones, but analysing their actions and listening to the creators' interviews make it clear they are the exact opposite; but, just like the Operator influenced the Slender Man, these other characters influenced the creation of the proxies as in the initial public perception of them by the audience.
Slenderman doesn't need a "why". He's an eldritch being, so it's safe to assume his "motivations" are beyond human understanding. That's part of what make him so scary... the mystery. An explanation of why he's doing what he's doing would diminish his character.
As Linkara said in one of his videos, "motivations beyond our understanding" is bullcrap, a motivation isn't beyond understanding, it's just the why of your actions. And I've said this before, but explaining the why of a character doesn't diminish the threat of it. I know it's a trend to assume that explaining the unknown takes away the fear factor, but it really doesn't if you do it right. For instance, we know why Darth Vader does the stuff he does. Doesn't make him any less scary. Likewise for Slender, if you just say he does it "for fun", it won't make him less scary, if anything it makes him even scarier, cuz to him, it's all a game, and you can't do anything to stop it. Hopelessness is what makes something scary, the unknown just helps, but isn't the sole motive.
@@L1z43vr Bad analogy. Vader is a human with human motives; the Slender Man is an eldritch being with eldritch motives. Asking why the Slender Man does what he does is missing the point. That's like asking why a wendigo or skinwalker does what it does. It's a folkloric malevolent spirit. It doesn't need a reason. Also, Linkara is the last person you should be citing. Linkara is particularly bad at critiquing horror, because there's a lot of horror concepts he doesn't understand. Like saying Junji Ito's protagonists have a lack of agency.
I always tought he was a "cognitohazard" that kills everyone that knows about his existence because is just its nature. He doesn't even have a "form", just appears the way you expect a formless imperceptible creature: no face and unusual body appearence.
My favroite mechanic in this game is the "OH SHIT!" sprinting. If you SEE something bad, AKA, Slenderman appearing right next to you or The Chaser, your sprint is MASSIVELY faster in order to escape! Until they got rid of it in the remake!
@@Dhampire1976 Look at the chaser and then sprint, you will be running much faster than if you ran without seeing any danger. This was only a mechanic pre remake.
This is a damn good video. Love to see that Slender isn't a forgotten thing. I remember when the Hollywood movie came out in 2018 (which I still haven't seen), and the lack of popularity of it really felt like it solidified that Slender Man was from a different time. But I love that interest in it still exists. What a cool concept, and I love seeing how much it affected Internet horror since then.
I hope this remake is some kind of test for a future sequel for this series, cuz this series is the main reason I fell in love with Slenderman as a concept and a character(Marble Hornets did help too,and The Entity fan film.I'm so glad the Marble Hornets' team worked on this series,it's so notorious yet something that makes me giggle like a little girl of how awesome that's for me). If they don't plan on continuing it tho that's fine, we already have two banger games.
This nice one, although funnily I thought Into the Abyss is my favorite chapter considering it's much tense to play than The Eight Pages. In fact I was scared of it when I was younger. Although Homestead is another fav as well. Remake is such an upgrade, love how it looks, although I do feel a bit of the night lightning is kinda too bright. Looks rather more movie like or otherwise it's called day for night if you want to get a look at what I mean. Although could add to the dreamyness of it. Aside from that (with also Kate's or the Chaser's model being the same, if not higher poly, I assume they'll get to that updates later alongside adding modding and multiplayer), super nice anyway.
The Slender Man is like Pennywise. He feeds off of fear and spreading knowledge of him. If no one fears him or knows about him, he'll cease to exist. The Marble Hornets writers implied this in an interview, referring to his stalking as "feeding".
When Eric Knudsen made the Slenderman he largely drew inspiration from Lovecraftian/Cosmic Horror, so no, a proper motivation will actually hurt the character because Cosmic Horror is all about the fear of the Unknown, if he does have a motivation it's not one that Humans can comprehend
I remember in school my friend told me he saw a video that said the reason slenderman is after you in this game is because you hit his girlfriend when you crashed your car in the beginning. I miss the blissful stupidity of childhood.
I wonder, is it possible to still get the original version of Slender the Arrival? like what if you wanted to play that version instead of the ue5 one? from your vid it looks like the remake is pretty much superior in every way, but still.
Fyi: The remake doesnt change any map layouts or add anything new. All the locations are the same map as the orginal, with new props. But there arent new rooms or old rooms gone.
I did do that. The Kullman mines layout is more evenly between the first and second floors in the remake. I figured that out the hard way when I tried using a map from the original version to guide me through the remade one.@@typervader
He's referring to the 🤓-y technical difference between what Masky/Hoody were in Marbel Hornets, versus what proxies are. I don't personally know the difference, but I saw another comment here mention that there is one. 🤷♂️

Agreed !
It's like the Lovecraftian Mythos, but condensed into a less-powerful, but more destruction-oriented persona.

A bit off topic, but it would be groovy if Slender-Man was in Dead by Daylight.

With the new Slenderman game trending for a while, I'm surprised the Poppy video has more views than this.
I honestly like the og arrival model than the new one and the jumpscare seems kinda funky

You can toggle which version you wanna play when you buy it.
