  • Upgrading my Tevo Tornado 3D Printer!
I've had it a year and have not used it a lot. I ran into issues with my Tevo Tornado and was disappointed by the noisy control box and quality of the prints it was producing. I was getting a lot of Salmon Skin effect and had to do some tuning to solve some problems with layer shift on the Y axis. Then, the glass bed broke on me, so it has sat unused for several months. Now it's time to give it a major overhaul and get it printing again!
In this video I am going over what I have replaced in the electronics box, what's worked and what hasn't...and what's next!

This was a great video. I hadn’t even heard of a few of these and I call my Tevo a total custom.
    Thx!

Huh after talking to a friend and reading reviews the tevo Tornado came up as the best bang for the Buck 3D printer I could find, 1st time 3D printing, watched some youtube videos to learn wth I was doing but mine has been flawless since I got it with some incredibly fine prints and No Salmon pattern that I could see. Looking forward to see what you do with yours to fix the problems.

Greetings from a fellow Mainer and fellow Tornado owner. I subscribed because of these 2 reasons. I’m anxious to see how your tornado prints with the upgrades. I would like to see you upgrade to the Hemera. I’m debating going this route too. Ive been plagued with extrusion problems on my Tevo. I tried a knock off Bondtech dual drive that seemed to help but still not perfect. Seems like I haven’t had a good quality print from it on a long time. Anyway, Look forward to the next Tevo vid!

I’ve been watching to see what’s out of Hemera CR-10/Tevo Tornado upgrades. I’ve seen some that are functional but don’t seem to include the part cooler and/or the BL Touch/ EZABL solutions. Still researching

I have a MKS board but the one I have has the drivers built into the board. I used it to replace the board for my Monoprice select Mini V1.

My lerdge x rebuild has been on hold forever.. I should finish it! I hope you installed a 12v rheostat (under $15) and control the fan speed down to an acceptable level.

I haver the 2nd generation version called the 2018 gold edition. This version has some of the upgrade already included. Such as the gen L 1.0 board. I bought a TH3D power supply to replace the stock power supply. Th3D says it will help reduce the jerkiness do to excessive ripple in the stock power supply. I have a Q: can you take a picture of the on/off switch. I want to make sure I have the wires hooked up correctly. My switch is the 6 pole type. 3 poles, I think, come from the power cord. And 3 poles are part of the switch itself. I just want to make sure I have the wiring from the switch part to the power part of the switch itself. I really want to know if I have the power lead hooked up correctly. I can't find any info on the net. Thank You.

I paused because I have concerns about the AC bed and want my electronics friend to instead it. The SSR should be on a much bigger heat sink. I’ve searched what the correct heat sinks should be for an SSR like that and definitely not inside the control box.

  • @z1power
    @z1power 5 років тому

I wonder why AC heat beds have not become standard on large machines but perhaps they are still more expensive than a big DC supply and heat bed.

    Great video!
I broke my bed as well on my tornado, and I am wondering where / how you ordered that new bed and stuck the heating pad back on. I would like to do the same to get my printer back up and running.
    Thanks,
    Jason

We have both the Tornado and Nereus. Having some problems with both (mainly the hotend and extruder). So if I got the Bondtech upgrade kit for 1 (or both) what will be involved in switching it out. Will I jus simply need to rewire a plug on the Bondtech components? Thanks for any advice you can offer. I did the RuiRaptor upgrade for salmon skin on the Tornado way back when we got it. But I have not done any upgrades or changes to the Nereus.

    • @WhereNerdyisCool

The Tornado is a 24V system. The Bondtech SDS is 12V. I asked them to make me one that was 24V, a custom one. They did it for me. I need to check the firmware but I’ll be giving that a try soon!

I solved salmon skin by simply cranking up the driver Vref to max :) As a bonus, it is now very fast machine as well :)
Control box fans i fixed by hooking those fans in series, halving the voltage per fan.
You could also step down voltage for stock fans with buck converter, but much cheaper and easier to hook them up in series :)
Besides, Noctua fans are *way way way* over hyped. They are just fans, quiet fans. But they are not the only fans, nor necessarily the best ones for this application. Because they target quiet, they do not have the highest volume or pressure, something has to give always. You can make any fan as quiet as noctua.
