    ****ATTENTION - IMPORTANT*****
    The Firmware above is the firmware that Tevo released on their Facebook Group around the same time that they released this printer. However, I have had some issues where the Z offset settings don't seem to work correctly for some reason. It's not 100% of the time, but enough to where it gets annoying... So, I modified a version of my CR-10 firmware to have the same Splash Screen and settings, and I've been using it successfully on my Tevo Tornado for about a month. If you want to be on the safe side, go with this firmware, Otherwise, if you run into any problems with the other firmware that just don't make sense, you should probably try this firmware instead.

    Worked fine for me, I had to adjust the "prime nozzle" script-line because I jammed my first BLtouch into the leveling screw and destroyed the probe. Trust me you don't want that. Now with my (2nd) BLtouch sensor it works flawless.
    Code is now;
    G28 ; Home all axes
    G29 ; Auto bed leveling
    G1 Z5 F3000 ; lift
    G1 X90 Y2 F1500 ; avoid binder clips
    G1 Z0.2 F3000 ; get ready to prime
    G92 E0 ; reset extrusion distance
    G1 x120 E10 F600 ; prime nozzle
    G1 X150 F5000 ; quick wipe

    I wasn't sure this whole 3D printing thing was going to work out. I couldn't tell what was happening and why it didn't want to stick prints to the bed, but thanks to this video and the BL Touch, it is over there working away perfectly now. Thanks for such a detailed tutorial. I have the newer verison of the Tevo Tornado which has a little different wiring diagram. If you google "mks maker L bl touch diagram" you will see a wiring diagram for the MKS Maker L board on Google images for the Tevo Tornado 2018 (gold) verison. Thanks!

    This was a great help! Pro tip though, when removing wires from the connectors, use a needle. Puts less pressure on the tab and less chance of cutting yourself. Took me a bit, but I got my BLTouch working all thanks to you!

  • @joshmix

    When crimping a terminal with a hand tool - Do Not fold over the metal tabs with a needle nose - simply insert the terminal in the crimp tool, insert your wire and crimp it (yes it takes a bit of coordination). the tool will curl the tabs inward in an "M" shape. I work for a wire harness manufacturer and this is going to give you the best result for longevity (in our manufacturing setting we have very strict tolerances on how tight that crimp needs to be. +/- 0.002") . If you've already folded over the tabs and are concerned about it - you can solder over the crimp and you'll be ok.

      Thanks, glad to hear it. The story of this video is, I bought this printer as soon as they first started selling them. Before it showed up, on the facebook group, the Tevo company released the actual firmware that was installed on the printer at the time. I modified that firmware and that's what's in the video description.
      I haven't kept up with newer versions of this printer, so they may have made changes since then, and/or there may be newer versions of the firmware that could be modified to work with the BLTouch. I haven't looked much into it. If I get a chance to at some point, I may make an update video, but I've never had any problems with the original firmware, so I haven't had much reason to.
      Anyway, best of luck with it.

    Excellent Guide, thank you.
    I'm actually still waiting for my Tornado to arrive, but I downloaded the latest Arduino IDE, the U8Glib and your version of the Firmware, set up the IDE as you described, but did a compile only (as I don't yet have the printer), but got the following warnings:
    /Users/steve/Documents/Arduino/libraries/U8glib/utility/u8g_rot.c:48:1: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type
    u8g_dev_t u8g_dev_rot = { u8g_dev_rot_dummy_fn, NULL, NULL };
    /Users/steve/Documents/Arduino/libraries/U8glib/utility/u8g_rot.c:48:1: warning: (near initialization for 'u8g_dev_rot.dev_fn')
    Would you know if these are anything to be concerned over?

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      thanks, I don't get that error specifically when I compile. you may want to try with the 1.8.3 version of the Arduino IDE and u8glib v1.18.1 version for Arduino here: bintray.com/olikraus/u8glib/Arduino - those are what I have installed on my pc. Also make sure you have Arduino/Genuino Mega or Mega 2560 board selected from Tools - Boards and ATMega2560 selected from the Tools - Processors menu. - if it's just a warning, but still compiles successfully, it's likely that it would still work, but if you want to be on the safe side, the above versions should work without fault.

    Tevo Tornado: Trying to follow your video. When I go to Prepare then click on auto home the extruder go’s to home. Then click on home x. the extruder moves strait up from home about 5mm. Then I click on home y the extruder stays still and the bead moves back and forth in y axis maybe 5 or 10mm. Then click on home z the extruder go's to home. In short the extruder do's not go to the x,y,z points and end up in the center of the bead.
    Hope I did not make this confusing. Hope you help.

      sorry to hear you had trouble with it. I know it's worked for several people who have followed this tutorial and it worked fine for my printer. The firmware in the description is pretty much just the firmware that Tevo themselves released on the Facebook page around the same time they started selling the Tornado, but I changed it to work with the BLTouch - pretty much just uncommenting the BLTouch line and setting the Auto Bed Leveling parameters in the configuration.h file. You may have more luck with one of the versions on the Facebook group's page - facebook.com/groups/TEVO.Tornado.Owners/

  • @thomaslampertius7205
    @thomaslampertius7205 6 років тому

    I have had the bltouch installed on my printer for past 4 months and it has been working flawlessly but a few days ago I replaced my pei sheet and now the nozzle starts 2-3mm above the bed. I have redone my z-offset and stored the value to the eeprom and reflashed the firmware many times now and it has had no effect whatsoever. No matter what I do the nozzle is 2-3mm above the bed when a print starts.

    • @juergennoetzel988
      @juergennoetzel988 Рік тому

      I'm dusting mine off after sitting for a few years and having a similar issue. When I first tried it, it printed a millimeter or 2 too high. Since I ordered a new PEI bed I figured I would re-adjust when I install that. After installing the new bed, the nozzle dug into the bed (since it was thicker) so I needed to raise the z-offset. My offset was +1.25 and after the math, the new offset was +4.05. I then homed it and it dug into the bed again. I;m not sure anything changed (I did save the setting)

  • @zanbow
    @zanbow 6 років тому

    I just bought a BL touch for my Tevo Tornado from Amazon and used your mount and firmware from the links.
    I did a home command and the nozzle moves to center of the bed. When i moved the Z axis to .001 the nozzle was right were it should be.
    The system had a z-offset of +1.25, so I added the .001 to it. Then I made the adjustment and saved it to the eprom.
    Turned it off the box and turned it back on. New offset was saved.
    Here is where the problem is.
    I go to bed level in the system menu and select it. The nozzle moves to it first test position and it seems to work OK, the second and third position puts the nozzle right on the bed. On the fourth test position, the system just pushes my print Nozzle into my bed and keeps pushing until the motors start clicking. I have to turn off the box to stop it.
    I thought I did z off set wrong so I tried subtraction this time, but still, no matter how I have the Z offset, set at, I can’t fix it.
    I'm lost
    Ps: I did double check the cables and did a continuity test on them. They are good.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      First, make sure your nozzle isn't hitting the bed at the same time as the bltouch probe since that can cause the probe to trigger too low in some places on your bed - if it is, you'll want to lower your BLTouch a little bit by either loosening the screws to stretch the springs out a little bit, or adding some washers between the BLTouch and the printed mount... If that's not the issue, you may want to try re-flashing the firmware from the description above, then running an M502 command followed by an M500 command and M501 to reset the default settings in the firmware and load them up into active memory. Marlin has a strange habit of not overwriting existing settings when you flash the firmware over a previous version of Marlin. If that doesn't work, my only other guess would be a short in one of the wires to the BLTouch. I have heard of that happening in the past where the wires short depending on what part of the bed they're probing currently.

    • @zanbow
      @zanbow 6 років тому +1

      I re-flashed and used the M502 M500 , M501 commands and it works now. Thanks for the info.
      Ps: I also removed or // the #define NOZZLE_CLEAN_FEATURE line. Did not see a need for it on the tornado with one nozzle.
      I would like to know why you think it needed to be activated. I'm always willing to learn.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      Good deal I'm glad to hear that worked for you. the #define NOZZLE_CLEAN_FEATURE is actually disabled in the version I have up for download in the video description. I just downloaded it and opened the Configuration.h file and this is copy/pasted from it:
      //#define NOZZLE_CLEAN_FEATURE
      I'm not sure how familiar you are with coding, but the two // at the beginning "comment out" the line so that the software doesn't see it there. then the line after that #if ENABLED(NOZZLE_CLEAN_FEATURE) just checks to see if it is enabled before doing the stuff underneath that #if.

    I think my problem is software related as the BL Touch seems to be functioning correctly, mechanically. If I've got an ikea mirror on top of my bed, do I have to change any values in Marlin? The probe seems to go off the edge of the mirror and throw off the auto level.

    • @RemainIndoors

    The BL touch in your link has an option come with the 1 m ribbon cable and those colors are what you're using. Your ribbon cable link has more cables and not the same colors. I printed your mount. Where did those springs come from? I'm still scared of getting into the control box but more so flashing the Software. I'm on Mac. Do Need to use a USB cable to do the firmware? • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      you're welcome to use any cables you like as long as the cables connect from the BLTouch to the right spots on your main board. This video is more of an overview of how I installed a BLTouch on my printer so if you're comfortable with straying from my instructions, feel free. The springs came with the BLTouch, and yes you'll need a USB cable to write the firmware. You'll probably have an easier time just carrying your printer over to your computer if you don't have a long enough USB cable.

Since we removed the Z-min limit switch to plug in the BLtouch, how is this supposed to work? Do I plug in the Z-min Limit switch in the unused Z-Max slot on the board and do something in marlin using both the BLtouch and Z-Min? @@manningcustom sorry, I don't watch a lot of other youtuber's videos on the subject, but I walked through some basic steps in this video ua-cam.com/video/AH_OP8arePk/v-deo.html - The only difference I would suggest is using the 1.8.3 version of the Arduino IDE, since that's the one I used in this video, and I know it works with this version of the firmware.

    Is it possible to do the self leveling before or during the heat up process? I find it takes a lot of time doing it while the bed and hot end are already hot

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  2 роки тому

      it looks like it might be possible with PrusaSlicer at least. the Start G-code has the set extruder temp, set bed temp, wait for bed temp, wait for extruder temp lines specified, so you could move the bed-leveling G-code above those lines and it should run bed leveling while it's heating up. There is a drawback to that though, the bed may change shape slightly as it heats up, so it's possible it may not be as level as you hope if you run auto-bed leveling before it's hot. I haven't tested any of this, so it's just a theory, but it's worth testing if you're looking to save time.

    Im having a hell of a time to get this thing to work, I have a TEVO tornado with a glass bed on top. I uploaded the firmware no changes, using your mount. I can now no longer access my TEVO via usb with repeiter host and I cannot get the Z offset right. After starting a benchy it resets sliced with repeiter & slic3r it resets after setting down the first layer. Talk about frustrating, i almost want to go back to manual bed leveling because at least i could print.

      You may want to try changing the Baudrate to 115200 in Repetier Host if you haven't already tried that. When you say it resets, do you mean the printer is restarting all together? That sounds like a possible wiring issue somewhere that could be shorting from + to - so you may want to double check your wiring if that is the issue

      Hi, you may want to try some of the troubleshooting covered in some of the other comments on this video. I plan on making a troubleshooting video as my next video, but in the meantime, here's my response to somebody else having similar issues:
      First, make sure your nozzle isn't hitting the bed at the same time as
      the bltouch probe since that can cause the probe to trigger too low in
      some places on your bed - if it is, you'll want to lower your BLTouch a
      little bit by either loosening the screws to stretch the springs out a
      little bit, or adding some washers between the BLTouch and the printed
      mount... If that's not the issue, you may want to try re-flashing the
      firmware from the description above, then running an M502 command
      followed by an M500 command and M501 to reset the default settings in
      the firmware and load them up into active memory. Marlin has a strange
      habit of not overwriting existing settings when you flash the firmware
      over a previous version of Marlin. If that doesn't work, my only other
      guess would be a short in one of the wires to the BLTouch. I have heard
      of that happening in the past where the wires short depending on what
      part of the bed they're probing currently.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      Arduino should work on a Mac too, and that's the only place that you really need a computer for this. A BLTouch is a physical sensor that detects with some level of accuracy how far away something is, as long as it's a solid object, and a Capacitive sensor can accomplish the same thing, but will require some fine tuning of sensitivity. In my experience Capacitive sensors are inferior in that small changes in atmospheric humidity and heat can affect how accurate your sensor is. I recommend Tom's video here if you want to know more: ua-cam.com/video/il9bNWn66BY/v-deo.html

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      I've personally never had any problems with the BLTouch. Most of the issues I've heard are from other people who have a hard time setting it up. I have 3 printers with a BLTouch including this one, and all 3 work fine for me. my only complaint is that it's a little slower to probe than an inductive sensor because of the time it takes to stow and deploy, but the trade off is it's easy to use even with glass on the bed (which the tornado bed is all glass). In my experience, as long as you're careful and thorough with your setup, the BLTouch should work fine

    • @jamesk9375

      Remain Indoors I plan on putting a piece of regular glass on top of my bed, do you see any problems with that?

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      no problems from the BLTouch perspective. but it will add more weight to your y carriage, which could make for slower printing. When I got my Tornado when it first came out there was an issue with the voltage to the Y stepper needing to be adjusted. I don't know if they've fixed that now, but if you get skipped steps in the Y axis, you may need to adjust that. - but that's also the kind of issue you can run into from adding extra weight to your bed.

    so do you put it at .2 above the bed because that is the hight you want to print at? so if i wanted to print at .1 i should set the offset as .1 from the bed?

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      The point of the z offset is just to set how high your nozzle is off the bed when your printer reads 0 for the z height. For me, I've always had good luck with setting the z offset to make the nozzle about a paper's width above the bed, then setting the first layer to print at 0.2mm. Even if I want to print at 0.1 layer height or in rare cases 0.05 I'll still print the first layer as 0.2 because it gives me the best adhesion without squishing the filament too much. But this is assuming you have a 0.4mm nozzle.

    Ok. Still having an issue. I used your mount and firmware. Whenever it starts to print the Z is 0.2, not 0 every time and all it is doing is printing tumble weeds. Any idea how to rectify this issue? I didn't notice anything in the g-code that would cause this problem.
    EDIT: it shows 0.2 for Z on the screen and no matter how much I change the offset it still does the same thing.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  5 років тому

      The offset isn't going to change what the screen shows for your current z height. even if you set the offset to -10 then when your z axis shows 0 on the control box, it should actually be 10mm lower (extreme example). I'd try cleaning the tip of the nozzle as good as possible and adjusting the z offset again. maybe make the offset a hair lower than the paper's width suggests. also make sure you clean your bed with rubbing alcohol before you start your print.
      Also the first layer print height will depend on your settings in the slicer. 0.2 as the first layer height works for me, but it can vary slightly depending on the type of filament you're printing with, so it may be worth changing the first layer height to 1.8 or 1.6 to see if that makes a difference. But regardless, your first layer should never read as 0, otherwise you may be digging into the bed.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      first, does your BLTouch do the self test when you first turn your printer on? it should deploy then stow the pin a couple of times. If that isn't working, it's most likely a wiring issue. Even if that is working it can be a wiring issues, so make sure all of your wiring is definitely making solid contact since shorts anywhere can cause problems like this. Also make sure your wires are definitely plugged into the right locations. - if that all checks out, you may want to try re-flashing the firmware from the description above, then running an M502 command followed by an M500 command and M501 to reset the default settings in the firmware and load them up into active memory. Marlin has a strange habit of not overwriting existing settings when you flash the firmware over a previous version of Marlin. you can run those commands by connecting your printer to your computer with Reptier Host or Pronterface or even the command window in Octoprint.

    • @thomaslampertius7205
      @thomaslampertius7205 6 років тому

      I quadruple checked my wiring and everything is good. When I power the printer on the BLtouch does do it's self-test correctly. But when it auto homes or bed levels the end of the pin on the BLtouch will hit the printers and go down a few for mm making the nozzle hit/crush the bed then the BLtouch retracts the pin and it goes and moves the hot-end up. I have tried reinstalling your firmware but it didn't solve my problem. Do you think it could be a problem with the BLtouch itself?

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      do you have the springs installed between the BLTouch and the mount? the mount is designed to include those springs so that the pin extends far enough past the nozzle to where it will trigger before the nozzle hits the bed. if the top of the BLTouch is flush with the mount, there's a good chance the nozzle will crash into the bed before the pin triggers

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      as a test, raise the z axis up about half way, then run the Home All command. when it starts lowering, try triggering the pin with your finger before it gets to the Bed. then you'll know for sure if that's the issue

  • @mikeandbirgit

    1st i had after doing by paper is -003.1 and then check my current z and it said 1.250.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  3 роки тому

      So, if the number your LCD screen said when the nozzle was a paper's width away from the bed was -3.1 that means, you need to lower the Z offset by 3.1. So if your Z offset is starting out at 1.25, that means you should change it to -1.85. After you do that and store your settings, make sure you try the paper thing again, but when you get the nozzle a paper's width from the bed, it should read 0.

      No, the Tevo Tornado does not come with Auto Bed Leveling. That why you have to use something like the BLTouch to add the sensor. It looks like the firmware gcode supports a sensor. Most printers support standard firmware. I wish the tornado did have Auto Bed Leveling built in. I am wondering how well this will work over time. How much re-adjustment of the bed screws will be necessary over time. I am coming from a Da Vinci 1.0 and a Monoprice Mini delta printers. From my experience with the Da Vinci Bed Leveling. I never want to have to perform that again, period. To much work and not enough fun printing.

    hey a friend told me I could use the same firmware for the cr-10 as the tornado is that true cause I have a cr-10 that I would like to add a BL touch to and I suck with firmware and creality won't give the firmware saying some BS about it not being open source even though its running off of marlin

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  7 років тому

      that depends on if you have the original CR-10 or the CR-10S. The original CR-10 has a Melzi (Sanguinololu) board as well as no additional pins available for a control signal to run the BLTouch without some modifications. See this guy's video for details: ua-cam.com/video/ioL-7oEBI1Q/v-deo.html - The original CR-10 would need some changes to the Marlin firmware to make this work, but if you're a member of the CR-10 facebook group, search in the files section there - there are a few variants of the firmware as well as some newer versions by Tim Hoogland. I do have a version of what is claimed to be the "stock firmware" saved on my computer, but I don't remember where I found it, I'm guessing it would have been on the facebook group... also I don't know if it is the actual stock firmware or just one that somebody mocked up - it does have the Creality CR-10 splash screen though, so it's possible. On the other hand, the CR-10S has a different board and two z-axis motors as well as servo pins that can be used to control the BLTouch. I don't own the CR-10S so I'm not 100% sure which pin would need to be configured in the firmware or which board to select without further research. If you do have the CR-10S, you may be able to get away with using a modified version of the Tornado firmware to get that to work, but no promises.

      Did you install the springs between the bltouch and the printed mount? The pin may not be deploying low enough to hit the bed before the nozzle. Second possibility is you may need to reset the firmware to its default settings. You can do that by running an M502 command followed by an M500 command and M501 to reset the default settings in the firmware and load them up into active memory. • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  5 років тому

      Is the BLTouch pin deploying when this happens? The way it's supposed to work, the X and Y would move to the middle of the bed, then Z axis raises up a little bit, and the BLTouch deploys the pin, then it starts lowering toward the bed. If it's not lowering, I would assume part of the wiring may be either incorrect or has a short in it. It has been quite a long time since the last time I did troubleshooting on one of these, so you may want to read around some of the other comments on this video or in the facebook group in case anybody else has had a similar problem and found a solution for it.

      If you look near the far right side of the list of tabs, there's a little down arrow you can click to view all of the tabs.

This is just a guess, but it may be confusion with how you're downloading from dropbox? as soon as you click the link in the video it should take you to a page that isn't particularly intuitive. At the top right of the page there's a button to download the whole zip file, but if you click through other links, I think you can actually download individual files, which would let you download the .ino file by itself without the rest of the files.

    I don't get the need for springs ... can someone explain? it is not obvious in the vid

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  5 років тому

      The springs are included in the set with the BLTouch. they aren't "Needed" necessarily, but the mount I designed factors them in. The company's purpose of including the springs was to allow the user to raise or lower the BLTouch as needed in small increments while keeping tension between the BLTouch and the mount. My design specifically shouldn't need you to lower the BLTouch so they would be fully clamped down. If you don't want to use the springs, you would either want a couple of metal washers to take their place, or to re-design the mount to place the BLTouch a tiny bit closer to the bed.

    I just did all the firmware stuff and now my printer doesn't auto home the z axis. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  4 роки тому

      z axis should be in the middle of your bed. Is it moving to the middle and stopping entirely? is it deploying the pin and raising up? if it's not deploying the pin at all, there's possibly a problem with the wiring. If it IS deploying the pin and just raising, you may need to invert the Z min endstop in the Configuration.h file in the firmware and write it again. You would do that by changing Z_MIN_ENDSTOP_INVERTING and Z_MIN_PROBE_ENDSTOP_INVERTING (if it's true change it to false, if and vice versa)
      BLTouch is a bit finnicky, but as long as the wiring is solid, it's pretty reliable.

    • @ethanbreen5500
      @ethanbreen5500 4 роки тому

      @@RemainIndoors It will deploy the pin once but not move the z axis height at all.

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  4 роки тому

      @@ethanbreen5500 so the pin deploys and retracts? or does it deploy and then do nothing? Either way, I would double check the wiring to make sure there are no loose wires, and make sure it's plugged into the correct spots on the main board. if all of the wiring is fine, you may want to invert the Z min endstop and test again to see if it makes a difference.
      Assuming you bought your Tornado recently, I believe I heard the newer versions of the Tornado came with different main boards than the version that's in my printer in this video. I haven't bought the newer version and I haven't researched the issue that much, but if it is a different board, the pins may be different than the firmware in the video description. it's possible somebody else has run into this issue, so somebody else may have left a comment on this video if you want to look through those. Worst case scenario, you may want to check on the facebook group for the BLTouch or the Tevo Tornado.

    Not only did they mess up shipping me a replacement bed and extrduer gear, not shipping it out for weeks until I bugged them about it, but when it finally got here it was a bent bed, totally unusable.

They didn't respond via service request on the us website, were very slow to respond on the Canada website, and only ended up responding after a few days to redirect me to China. The China contact had me pay for a replacement part, and then didn't ship it until I asked them for a tracking number. I still don't know if they actually sent it; they never confirmed with a tracking number and I haven't received the package yet.

The firmware in this video is from when they first released the Tevo Tornado. • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors  6 років тому

      Most likely, it's not triggering the endstop. if the x-carriage (print head) is moving all the way to the left and grinding until you shut it off, look for the little metal switch on the left side and see what's stopping it from getting hit, or if it is getting hit, make sure the plug is plugged into that switch correctly. - The same thing can happen with the bed. The bed should move all the way to the back of the printer, and there's a switch in the back for that. Or, if the x carriage is moving to the right, or the bed is moving to the front, then either the motor is plugged in backwards, or the firmware is messed up (unlikely).

    • @FatCowKill3r
      @FatCowKill3r 6 років тому

      They are plugged in correctly, it refuses to move vertically and there is no end stop trigger on that side away from the control box., it just moves until one of the nuts hits the green bracket then stutters. Idk if it's supposed to hit or not but it keeps trying to move past it but it hits every time.
