  • DISCLAIMER: I am simply talking about the queens portrayal on the show. This says nothing about their personalities, how they act in the real world, or their character. I actually adore basically every queen discussed in this video. I adore a good villain.
    In a new series where I take an in-depth look at some of the most reused editing tactics in RuPaul's Drag Race, today we're starting out with the most notorious. The feared villain edit. The edit that can tank a career. The edit that gets the angry mobs of fans riled up. Which queens got one, and which queens got it the worst? We're going to dive into every main season of the US series to find out!

      Also that everything Roxxxy said was followed up with laughter from all parties. They're drag queens, reading is what they do. If it weren't for the "Seeing you in the bottom 2" line, I don't think they would've had material for a villain edit.

      As someone who is a person of color, not to try and be offensive, but i think its cuz we generally are more honest about what we think vs white people and we will say things whites generally would be too scared to say. Maybe its because we got raised in a world knowing there is a very bad side to it automatically vs where whites generally dont always see that. Especially since many of the white queens on the shows biggest issue was having homophobic parents, or some who were open and said they were lucky to have the parents they had. @@skinnylegend3487 as a southeast asian i want to say something similar about how asian queens get treated on the show also has ties with how asians are raised. a lot eastern cultural ideals are centered around respect, politeness, obedience, etc. which means asians tend not to be as confrontational/upfront with their emotions (which isn't a good thing nor a bad thing). this conflicts with what producers want to see from their cast, because obviously they want to make an entertaining tv show, and this means they want to see queens who get into drama. when you look at a lot of the asian queens who have gotten casted recently, they don't seem to be the type to really get into drama and fight someone head-on, (kahmora, rock, plastique, yuhua, kim chi). so while production does cast an asian queen every season for diversity, they are usually casted as early-outs because production doesn't think they'll make good tv.

    It's so odd because Acid Betty by many accounts is a very sweet queen off-screen. Cynthia especially speaks fondly of her for supporting her during her fight with cancer. I don't know if she was playing up the "conflictive" aspect on Drag Race, or she got a REALLY shady edit.

      I'm rewatching S8 and I do think that she was playing it up for the camera. There were times when she made really shady comments towards other queens, and the worst part was that they had the cast back up the editing with their comments about her on their confessionals. Kim Chi was shown to be happy about Betty getting eliminated and not just because Naomi stayed, Thorgy said that she loves Betty but she was really negative the entire time she was there and that people in NY don't want to work with her because of how difficult she is, but she was so helpful, enthusiastic, and creative when working with Thorgy and Bob for the New Wave Band Challenge, she had a whole thing with Chi Chi during the Bitch Perfect Rusical and was even mad that Chi Chi won but on the runway she looked softer and even laughed at Chi Chi (didn't look shady at all more so genuine) when she thought New England was overseas. I did notice that there seemed to be a disconnect in how she acted at times, specially in her confessionals... Now idk about her coming for Trixie, it was uncalled for and unnecessary but so were most of the things she said in her confessionals so I still stand by my opinion that she was having fun being the villain and I think she's cool for that.

      @@ivannareyes1780 Just adding my one thought about it. Not saying I necessarily condone it, but looking back, I can see Acid Betty (or anyone really) being just a tad jealous of the attention Trixie was getting, even so soon after season 7. I think the new fandom's reaction to Trixie's was probably unprecedented and I think her unconventional makeup look getting a lot of interest/support took a lot of drag/makeup artists by surprise. So even if they are unbelievably talented themselves (as I think Betty is), I think it's possible she- as a fantastic makeup artist- may have let some jealousy and "let me tell ya'll how it actually is" attitude come out. I love both these performers though, and I agree with you. Whether Betty played it up or not, I don't think she has anything to apologize for. It was entertaining!

      Here’s how you have to look at it and I suggest the Talk Of Love Podcast by Lacey from Rock Of Love, who is a iconic Reality TV member from Vh1. She talks a lot about production and how it works BTS on a show like this. The producers are the real villains on these shows but for good reason. They just wanna make a fun TV show and the fans take it to heart for no reason. I get that Drag Race is the LGTBQ communities number one show that showcases everything about them but they forget one thing. How can you be about love and spread hate?? Let alone on a show that is only showing ONE HOUR OR 90 MINUTES of a THREE MONTH filming period or less or more. That just baffles. Like you said, enjoy the show and realize that it’s real yes but also it’s not a genuine competition and that everyone knows it has to make ratings and be entertaining. Laceys number one advice for everyone who does these shows is to take the most outrages part of your personality and turn it up to a ten because if you are boring then you are going home and that stuck with me since then

    if the fans could watch the show critically and not immediately attack anyone at the drop of a pen then we could enjoy villain edits and still respect queens and their art outside the show 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ but unfortunately that doesn't happen. most recent ex was the attack of Olivia at denalis elmin. literally half the fans did a 180 on Olivia because of one bad episode for her. I think the producers are aware and that's why kandy for example got a more well rounded edit; she was definitely the villain, but I think the producers were trying to decrease the amount if flack she'd receive. but it'll never happen as long as the fans stay like this

    • @EscMoonlight
      @EscMoonlight 3 роки тому +15

      Absolutely, it’s so unfair that some queens get hate off of just one episode, it’s completely ridiculous. I mean, Denali was my favourite, and I was gutted when she left, but it wasn’t Olivia’s fault, even though some people accused her of sabotaging Denali (that was completely false, both her and Denali revealed that Denali’s dress was a reveal, so it was Denali’s choice not to take the bottom part off). Personally, my least favourite was Kandy Muse, who was the real villain, and I have no hate whatsoever towards Olivia or Tina, who both got hate. Also, can we talk about Tamisha Iman? Just because she’s opinionated and isn’t scared to speak against Kandy’s bullshit, she gets a crappy edit and gets sent home WAY earlier than deserved. Basically, this just shows how much queens are at the mercy of producers giving them a good edit, and queens who don’t get it (Tamisha, Tina etc) are basically ruined in terms of reputation.

They don't know how to solve that big emotion, so they dump it on the scapegoat girl that "robbed" their fave. And they feel justified, cuz other people are already sending her hate too. But Gia's image was softened by her funny confessionals, her being a bit on the "quirky dumb" character, and also info on her childhood and origins. She was also clearly a good friend for Laganja and was portrayed accordingly. She also did not go after one specific queen......... because April left early. Gia was clearly after queens that were not "feminine enough", but I guess everyone understood later that it was probably her internal conflict talking instead.
      Laganja got a bit of a shady edit sometimes, but mostly "airhead and delusional". Even during the "I'm feeling very attacked" moment, we can't help but laugh and also sympathize with her. I feel like Utica kind of got a villain edit, or at least a "not good" edit. I found it really confusing how she was portrayed as really kind for a bit, then turned into a secret shady queen and pretty much tried to humiliate her towards the latter half of the season. I'm not to sure though but it would be interesting to look at.

    • @Unhappytimeaper
      @Unhappytimeaper Рік тому +1

      This is sort of the problem when producers force type casting for arcs and needing someone to fill roles. Utica started as the cute, nice, helpful which was already filled later but Olivia and Utica said that one of her downfalls was that she didn’t fight hard enough for her own time/roles in the show thus tried to put herself first setting her up from no longer just being that “helpful sweet” type. She couldn’t be comedy because while Utica is weird she’s not funny, and the show was hellbent on never considering her s fashion queen because they wanted Gottmik and Symone for those spots given they rarely praised her for her designs. By the end, the season needed a villain and all the other roles were filled + they knew they didn’t want to push someone like Kandy too much into the villain as her arc was about opening up to a softer side and it wouldn’t have matched for pushing her into a top spot to continue to be a villain thus leaving only Utica to be editing into this box. It’s clear that a mix of just already friend group biases on the season and knowing for a fact Kandy, Gottmik, and Symone were always going to make it to the top they did do as much as they could to edit down Utica resulting in this sort of humiliating, very outcast image that even Gottmik/Olivia called out production for being fairly cruel to her [since the villain/shady really wasn’t there]

    Some Thoughts:
    1. I'm surprised you didn't bring up S3 Shangie. It's another case of just a really shady edit, but I feel like the way she "played the game", the other queens generally finding her annoying, and her being the main booger to rival the Heathers would at least make her worth mentioning.
    2. I think it's arguable that Bebe was the villain of AS3. Her personality was perfect for the villain, she eliminated Aja in a way that STILL feels shady, and it's implied that she wanted to eliminate Trixie, the obvious hero of the season. I think they only avoided this cuz she's the show's first winner, and tarnishing her name would be the opposite of why they brought her on the season to begin with.
    3. Akeria is also one of the villains of S11???? I don't think she was the foil for someone else, but I and several others have noticed that Akeria was always INVOLVED and present in drama, even though the drama wasn't about her. She would often be the "instigator" for Rajah and Silky, and I think if they are declared villains, she should be too (or again, at least mentioned)

    I think it would be interesting if you try to decipher who are the queens that were given a hero or neutral edit, despite their constant shadyness and poking on other queens during the season... I mean Bianca del Rio, Jackie Cox and Mizz Cracker were definitely portrayed as heroes but they were shady and got on other queen's nerves during their respective seasons.

    In the last couple of years, there have been several explaining that whiteness is centered around conformity and comfortability. The moment those two things are disrupted, the friction causer must be vanquished. That's why it's always been hard for Black people - as the pillar of whiteness is anti-Blackness - can never be truly successful in white spaces. Other communities of color experience this too, yet there's a proximity to whiteness that almost shields them from whiteness's anti-Black madness - Model Minority myth, Latino/a/e community being extremely complicated to classify racially, and the virtual extermination and confinement of Indigenous people to acres of land. This, and other shows regardless of format, play this up to a T. I think that Raven was clearly the villain of season two. Yet, the producers edited her villainy and shadiness in a fun and sort of aspirational way. Violet Chachki received the same favorable villain edit. Had Ginger Minj been thinner, she would have probably received that edit too. I'm just sick of shows constantly playing into these tropes because they reinforce whiteness and white delusion/supremacy. So many people express how this show is eye-opening about communities some people may never come in contact with. For folks who may never come in to contact with Black people of any sexual and/or gender identity in real life outside of media representation, this is doing us no favors.

    it's pretty telling the differences in the grace the editors were willing to give Roxxxy in season 5 vs. Phi Phi/Jaremi in season 4 when everyone remembers and talks about Roxxxy's story about her mother abandoning her and her sister and it's given proper weight and sympathy and Ru even cries with her...but no one seems to remember Jaremi talking about his experiences with his father's brutal abuse, and that moment is very quickly glossed over in the show when it does happen.
    anyway, rpdr editors: stop editing queens of color into one-dimensional villains, and fans, stop sending death threats.

    I was literally thinking about this in regards to season 10 the other day. I think the producers wanted Aquaria to be the villain to Miz Cracker's hero (whilst still pushing Eureka to win). But then Aquaria and Cracker wouldn't play their game and Eureka kind of showed her ass arguing with Vixen, so they started pushing Aquaria for a growth edit instead and shoved Cracker to the side whilst trying to downplay Eureka's faults, only choosing Aquaria as the final winner when she was the clear fan favourite over Eureka.
