- The dreaded 5th place spot. So many iconic queens of RuPaul's Drag Race have fallen prey. From Latrice Royale, to Katya, to BenDeLaCreme (almost twice!), a plethora of the most beloved and fan favorite queens have placed 5th in their respective seasons. Is this just a coincidence, or is there something more....sinister looming beneath the surface...?
In this video, I'll break down every season of Drag Race, and weed out which queens have fallen victim to the curse, and which one just happened to end up in this placement. Then, I'll break down some theories about why it happens so often and give some final thoughts on why this phenomena happens so often on Drag Race and it's international franchises.

Fun "facts": both BenDeLaCreme and Katya were eliminated in the Ball Challenge, placed 5th, won Miss Congeniality, had two wins and had lipsynced one time before being eliminated;
I don’t care what the official placements say, if a queen comes back and sashays the exact same episode, then I don’t count them as taking that placement. So for me Shangela and DiDa are still Top 5, they earned it. On the other hand, Trixie gets Top 6 and Naysha Top 9, since they managed to stay more than one episode.

Same. In no universe does it make sense that Carmen is 5th while Shangela is 6th; Carmen is the textbook definition of a coaster (never won and never placed higher than safe). Same goes for Kenya, even though she's had her fierce moments
Except for TKB who will always be top 4 for me.
It's no coincidence that a lot of Miss Congenialities/Fan Favorites are around 4th-7th place. They're only a few episodes away from the finale, so they basically stay the whole season and you get to know them and love them. Being eliminated so close to the finale helps their brand; I would say that a "robbed queen" in some cases is more loved than the actual winner of the season. It's also worth noting that aside from Nina Flowers, no finalist has won Miss C (i guess it's an unofficial rule) so fan favorites being eliminated so close to the finale at least gives them a higher chance for that consolation prize

Being robbed in Drag Race is a blessing. The fandom will love you and that translates into a better career. Most of the cursed/robbed queens would have never won their seasons (with the exception of probably Ongina and MAYBE Katya, at least Violet thinks so)
when the show was on logo the fan opinion actually mattered. seasons 4-8 all had the top 3 favorite win except for season 7
I would consider Jackie and Olivia fan favorites, but why it doesn’t feel that shocking was that at that point in the competition it was time for them to go. Also if you look at the shift from the 5th Place curse to the 8th Place course from season 9 to season 10, it pretty interesting because after that victims of the 8th Place curse are Monique Heart, Plastique Tiara, Jan, and Denali.
I feel like from the producers perspective they thought Olivia would be the fan favorite/miss Congeniality
@@corrine1310 and she was at the start, but I think they forgot about her when pushing the narratives because they had nothing other than ‘she’s been doing drag for a year, and she really good for that experience’. And I honestly forgot half the things she did burning like the middle of the season 😔

I haven't watched any of UK 3, but my favorite look was Elektra, so I was hoping she'd win. Damn.

I mean, Katya's elimination was the biggest shock ever. Before that episode, she did have the best ppe score of all contestants, and even Violet said that she was glad Ru eliminated her, otherwise, she would have probably won. Ru literally did this whole fake-out thing at the finale when everyone and their mama for a hot second thought that Ru decided to crown her despite the elimination.
It would be like that one season of Paris Hilton searching for a BFF where a person that was eliminated an episode right b4 The finale won 😭
Heidi is top 5 of season 12 now, so it definitely was in place there
I also think Miz Cracker deserved to go home in 5th place but that challenge was so disturbing overall, I don't think making people face their trauma and open up about them in front of the camera is not the greatest idea of a challenge but oh well, that's drag race they do that literally every single episode while doing their makeup. Also, RuPaul really needs those Emmy's I guess.
That challenge should come with a warning from the APA that the views of RuPaul do not represent accepted pyschiatric practice. Seek help for depression!
Honestly, that was messy. It was outright milking trauma for RuPaul’s dollar eyes. I get that one of her and Aquaria had to go, for their underlying storyline to work, but the way it was done was really unpleasant to watch and honestly, with all the other unpleasant dramas of season 10, it turned it into a season that I just couldn’t watch any more. I know a lot of people say that S10 is one of the best, but I just find it impossible to rewatch bc the trauma milking and the unpleasant editing means it feels like a very tainted and nasty season to me.
@@hkazu63 I feel like it is one of the most strongest casts we've had, with Monet, Cracker, Aquaria, Kameron, Eureka, Monique, Blair, The Vixen, Asia and Mayhem. It is sad because I have lots of love for the majority of the queens of the cast of season 10 and they deserve all the support and love they get but it was really confusing to watch some queens get destroyed for what, another emmy?

I still think it's crazy how to this day people will blame the contestants instead of production for Queens going home too soon like Katya's situation for example she knew it was her time. On that episode of Untucked she told Kennedy she wish she could just sit there and watch Kennedy perform but she knew she had a job to do. It's great thinking of theories and "what ifs" but childish hate isn't lol
I think in a lot of cases, its the idea that the contestant is the only face they can put to the issue. Sometimes its a favouritism issue, and thats never a contestant’s fault but the producers are a faceless entity. You never see them, you don’t know who they are. You only know the queen and it’s easier to pile your anger on her for it. It’s still wrong of them to do and the fans need to stop it, but I do get why they jump to the contestant. They just need to grow up a little to realise it’s not about the queen.
Well, if you count Jackie as "Top 4", then the 5th place Queen is Heidi.

I don’t think Denali was supposed to get a robbed edit, I think the producers just genuinely didn’t expect the fanbase to like her so much. To me, it felt like they were setting her up with the “trying too hard and then getting eliminated” storyline, sort of like they did with Rock M Sakura the season before. I think we just naturally gravitate towards driven people and since they showed Denali’s determination throughout the season, we couldn’t help but like her.
The fact that every single American girl has been back in some way shape or form accept Dida Ritz is sad. Dida should’ve beeeeeen on allstars.

I think BendalaCreme was a genius to vote herself out on AS, they were definitely preparing her for a 'shocking' elimination anyway, there was absolutely no chance she would win. She played the producers and now she can say "Well, I was the 'real winner' look at how well I did" -- She won without really winning.

that’s actually not true at all. ben was clearly favored over the other girls and that was even part of the reason she left cause she felt production really pushing her and that combined with the stressful environment and guilt from having to send queens home was what made her quit.
after ben left production started looking at shangela as their potential winner. the entire point of the jury twist was to get bebe out of the way since ru knew bebe was never gonna be a viable winner since the fandom would view that as unfair to the other queens that had yet to win a crown. so production (correctly) assumed that the eliminated queens would never choose bebe since she was already a winner. of course it ended up completely backfiring on them cause they expected the queens to vote for shangela as one of the top 2 since she had been slaying but as we all know she got eliminated. rupaul herself even confirmed this in an interview she did (or it might’ve been an episode from her podcast i can’t remember) where she admitted to being shocked by the jury’s choices for top 2 and how they were just bitter that shangela had eliminated a few of them.
anyways by that point it was too late now that the producers’ hands were tied so they just went with trixie as the best choice they had left. so it’s wild that people actually think it was rigged in favor of trixie cause they literally never pushed trixie at all throughout the season and it showed in how messy the season became after ben left.
hearing you say "Trinity K Bonet one of the most beloved queens" is just crazy because after season 6 I feel she got a lot of hate, I always said she was an amazing queen, it's so good to see her finally get that recognition by the fandom
it is just a normal stunt on reality tv shows. the elimination prior to getting to the finale is used to cause controversy and stur things up so the hype can increase in the finale

Shangela- 3rd/4th on as3
Dela- 6th on as3(would have won had she not eliminated herself)
Katya- 2nd/3rd on as2

Dela won AS3. She just did not get the crown.
Vanessa so quickly losing such a loyal and an enormous following was an absolute shock to me. All we had heard the season prior was she had to come back and once she did and was critiqued so harshly the fandom proved how very fickle they are. I still can't get over watching the judges pick her apart while silky slid into fourth place. I don't think Vanessa got any credit for how big a part she played in her season. I'm sure production encouraged their relationship with Brooklyn which was a real distraction but great for TV.
Heck critiquing her for wearing similar but decent outfits while raving about Plastique's multiple identical outfits and even giving her the (wrong) design challenge win (should have won the Ball, that was a Dragula glam monster look).

I was heartbroken for vanjie in season 11. You could see each week she looked more and more disappointed with herself and was expecting constant negative criticism from Michelle. Yet Plastique got a pass when it came to wearing the same silhouette. It's not like Vanjie could replace what she'd already brought with her:/.
@@LJNorthey you know it's funny it was such a long time ago but I still remember the look on her face when she so desperately wanted their approval and what I saw every time she walked out on that Runway was a gorgeous Queen from head to toe. I've seen the same thing similar times when Queens will wear a look that's their brand and really suits them and they're not called on it. I felt they were really hard on her and when Brooklyn won the look-alike challenge with Plastique instead of Vanjie I knew she would never be in the top 4 like she deserved. Anyway she proved you don't need a Drag Race crown to become star.
@Dixie Rae Honestly that's exactly what I remembered too. I re-watched season 11 this week and it was just so upsetting seeing her ignored the whole season. She had her ups and downs, but I don't see why they brought her back only to not really give her much? it felt like she was brought back for the meme and then had the romance story and that's all she was used for.
I mean i wouldn't really count this "curse" as a bad thing neccessarily. Going home towards the finale is tough when thinking about the competition, but if you did somewhat well in the competition before and get a likeable edit, you're basically guaranteed a dedicated following

@@a.k.9708 Katya might have actually won her season. I mean Ginger should but they wanted to crown someone for a younger demographic. If you had Pearl low instead of Katya, Kennedy would have slayed her and then went home for her completely un-pageant-like behaviour in the final four. Between Katya, Violet and Ginger, we know who the fans would have wanted to win. Plus I'd have loved to see what Katya would have done in that format (which is my favourite finale format, much more so than the lip syncs). Not saying she deserved it or anything, just that she would have gotten the popular vote by a significant margin.
@@c.k.8585 katya deserved her bottom that episode. u can argue that it should have been pearl over kennedy and katya would probably sent her home, but still , the bottom was well deserved. i still don't think that she would have won, because both ginger and violet did so much better than katya in that season, but who knows.
@@polaaa9927 Katya had nearly the same track record with Violet at that point. Violet had 3 wins, 2 highs, 2 lows and Katya had 2 wins, 4 highs, 2 btm2 (the same track record with Kennedy and a MUCH better track record than Pearl).
On the episode itself I felt that Katya and Pearl had the best friend characters by far which seemed to not count by much. Then when it came to the looks I honestly only liked Violet's (anyone who doesn't like that look needs to get a COVID test). The worst for me was Kennedy by far but I could have seen any of the other three taking the second low position; what Pearl made looked gorgeous on her but it still was a blanket wrapped around her very thin body that was only made to look fashion because Santino gave it a reference that obviously was not there. And I think both Ginger's and Katya's were just . . .boring outfits with Hello Kitty items glued on them. Heck they were not even made well. You could have had Pearl vs Kennedy were we know the result or Ginger vs Kennedy which would have been amazing but bad for the show (because then Ginger would have been on the btm 3 times and thus really out of the running for the win even though she had 3 wins and 4 highs).
Really the fact that Violet won over Ginger is a testament to how awful Ginger came out of untucked and how much the fans did not like her. Since in the finale it came to popularity, Katya would had crushed the other two in popularity.
I am in no way saying that Violet did not deserve her win. She is amazing and she has probably changed Drag Race more than any single other queen just by being there.

thank you for acknowledging that Shangela and Dida are the true 5th place on their seasons, this is the absolute truth and anything else is blatant fake news.
The curse is just like the move Destiny Bond: it isn't just pernicious to the eliminated queen, it also causes a fair share of damage to the (reputation of the) queens who sends them home.
Maybe the plan on season 9 was to make Valentina place 5th, if she Knew the words she would have stayed over Nina Bonina Brown and probably get cut at top 5
Honestly, I think Ru wanted her top 4. She was the “young/pretty/skinny” queen archetype which they always love for every top 4 (but didn’t have for season 9). I think Peppermint would’ve been axed at top 5, considering she was cut at top 3 in an alternative filming before they decided they wanted a top 4 for the first lip sync for the crown.
I want to see Derrick get a fair shot on all stars, I get that her elimination in all stars 5 was fair but she didn’t get to show anything

The top 5 curse would probably apply to Drag Race Thailand too. Not really season 1, but season 2 is interesting to look at.
In season 2, they did snatch game when there were 5 queens left. Because of how the main challenge and the runway are judged separately, the queen Tormai ended up winning snatch game, but ended up getting eliminated the same episode. Tormai wasn't particularly a fan favorite, but the way she was eliminated despite winning the challenge was an interesting twist. She was technically the 5th placing queen...
BUT right after Tormai sashayed away, the judges suddenly brought two queens back into the competition. So it went from a Top 4 back to a Top 6. They did one more competitive episode, eliminated another queen, and it went back to the Top 5. Then at the top 5, it was suddenly time to decide who would be the 3 to make it to the finale, meaning two queens would be eliminated simultaneously... and two of the queens that ended up making it to the finale were actually both of the returning queens.
This upsetted a lot of the fans because the two simultaneously eliminated queens (Bandit & Vanda Miss Joaquim) would have technically been the real top 3 if the returning queens weren't brought back into the competition. Bandit was a fashion queen who brought it every runway and was pretty much "high" the whole competition while Vanda Miss Joaquim was a non-thai queen who brought a unique perspective to the competition while embracing Thai culture and people fell in love with her. Now they share the 4th/5th eliminated queen title.
A lot of people thought they were robbed since they slayed the whole competition. It was very much similarly to how Trinity K Bonet made it to top 4, but it was taken away from her last minute because Eureka was brought back. However unlike Eureka who was brought back immediately, these returning queens were missing from 2~3 episodes, so it was extra gagworthy that the returning queens made it to the finale.
So Bandit & Vanda kinda share the 5th place curse. Fans who watched Drag Race Thailand 2 usually hope that either one of these queens will appear on an international all stars season, especially because both of them also speak English.
I would say it applied to season 1 as well because in season 1 the fifth placers are Amadiva and Jaja.
Amadiva is the underdog of the season, she did well in every maxi challenges but fall short on the runway and Jaja is the fan favourite, people loved her
I think specially with the ones where there was a top 4 and viewers votes, the fifth place is the one when the producers are afraid of the popular vote, Vanjie, Katya, Della, Cracker all of them I think will have an overwhelming popular vote on social media and it would look worst for Ru if she selected other queen, even if Vanjie was not the most polished queen, everyone will vote to crown her, at least I think this is the fear
this would be a good theory if the eliminations didnt happen before the finale/when casts werent released. even if you account for leaks, popularity of queens/reception from the show cant be predicted for a popular vote for a 5th place elimination curse
I was the most angry at A'Whora getting sent home after just coming off her second win and first time in the bottom meanwhile it was Tayce 3rd time in the bottom with only one win. I was routing for A'Whora to win I actually screamed at my TV when she got sent home 😂

I think Jackie still has the curse in a unique way. Because Sh*rry P*e is what caused her to not be in the top 4, even though she was disqualified. Many fans called for her to be in the finale after she was eliminated, both because of that and the fact that even though she did better in the penultimate episode, both in the challenge and lipsync, she was put in the bottom and sent home because of "track record". This + the disqualified queen being favored and bumping Jackie down I think gives her the 5th place curse as well
I mean 5th place basically means you were either the last person to go home before the final or second to last. It's always gonna seem cursed cuz anyone who makes it that far has had enough screen time to endear themselves to a lot of people and will also gain bonus audience sympathy for appearing to fall at the final hurdle essentially.
5th place on s13 was cursed, the acting challenge was made to either save Symone,Kandy and Gottmik and set up to eliminate Liv. Both s11 and s12 had a music video for the top 5 and s13 somehow didn't , (hence why LUCKY has 5 words) knowing Olivia would slay that thing,and knowing that Symone,Kandy and Gottmik flopped on recent dancing/performing challenges (on the Rusical and Condragulations) production wouldn't want to risk losing them. Thats why the acting challenge was shitty, it seemed rushed and I guess that's why they chose roles related to the queens.

The funniest thing about Katya coming in 5th is she made a bad outfit and someone was like "You can do better, you can sew, why don't you start over?" And Kayta's response was she didn't want to. Kayta's laziness is the cause of all of that drama!

Most of these gals are fan favorites, probably because leaving before the final 4 (or 3) gives opportunity for us to view them as "robbed," which is always a reputation win with this fanbase.

I would also add Vanda Miss Joaquim and Bandit of the second season of drag race Thailand, their both got eliminated before the finale, placed fifth place and the fans considered them robbed especially because two queens who got eliminated and brought back in the competition
You should watch Drag Race España - it is one of the best seasons in Drag Race herstory - and Drag Race Thailand is great as well - especially the runways which along with Drag Race Holland and Season 13 are vastly superior to other seasons.
I will never understand people who hate a queen for sending home their favorite in a lip sync, it literally baffles me.. The "disliked" queen is just doing exactly what she is supposed to do by slaying the lipsync and fighting!! Did i love kennedy in season 7? Not really. Was it HER fault katya went home? No!! Katya landed in the bottom fair and square. And even if you want to argue if a bottom 2 placement of a fan fav is fair or not, it's STILL not the other queen's fault, it's production who placed them in the bottom.
It's a good theory, but I would take out some other situations out of this "curse". I think we need to discuss what the curse does. Does it eliminate a fan favorite? Mostly yes. Although, some of them were not because of a curse, but rather than they got fairly eliminated.
I consider Coco, Derrick and Vanjie was not part of this curse whatsoever. Not because they weren't fan favorites, but because they did poorly on their seasons (they were in the bottom or near-bottom almost all the time).
The worst thing you can be on drag race is the girl who sends the fan favorite home. Like there is no coming back from that, and it sucks.

Can someone explain to me how Derrick was the villain? Maybe I should rewatch s8 but I remember seeing her as the victim everyone was constantly putting down and criticizing. I feel like I watched a different show.
For me TKB is the ultimate 5th place curse. That top 4 spot was literally taken from her by force. For some weird reason the entire cast decided it was her time to go even though she was doing well in the competition and perfomed well in that challenge as well.

I would add Olivia Lux cause she won 2 challanges and also was in top 2 in the winner's circle, and she so sweet and lovely, and I do agree that she deserved to be in the bottom as well as kandy cause the critics are correct they have been doing same characters again and again , but what wasn't fair is that symone who'd literally done the same things in every single challenge as well as that one , somehow got the win for that week , I know symone was favored all season long and it was obvious they are giving her the win for social, political reasons but it was still a stinky moment

I think they sent home Bendelacreme when they did in season 6 because you couldn't have the "terminally delightful" queen up against Bianca because Bianca had a better track record and was a shoo-in. Bianca is the only queen whom with every moment on screen I thought "okay she's winning this season". (Plus Bianca was Dela's antithesis, except I didn't see another side to Dela -- she was nice to the core. Bianca was kind, so we didn't see her as the season's witch.)
So Dela lost that season and later when she self-eliminated in AS3 I think solidified that she is in a league of her own (through relentless kindness, which is now her thing).
And I do feel bad for Darienne. Her comedy just comes off as mean where Bianca's is just sarcastic.
Elektra Shock is the worst ever case of this, she was literally the best queen we've ever seen on any season of the show, we stan hard.
Also applies to DR Thailand season 2 with Bandit and Vanda Miss Joaquim both being eliminated in a joint 4th/5th place right before the finale. Subverted with DR Thailand season 1, DR Espana season 1, and DR Holland season 2.
You should do a video analyzing every queens placement in the entrance episodes to see if there’s any coincidences in elimination order, or even just the winning queens not EVERY queen Hahahha

I think Blu fits the curse. Won a challenge then gets sent home by Cheryl who was doing the worst in the competition up to that point. Blu deserved a top 4 placement.

now, i wouldn't say the 5th place curse was there, but (not to spoil) the queen who ended up 5th had probably the best and most complex character developments of any season ever and the episode of her elimination (ep6) i consider one of the greatest episodes of drag race of all time (9.3 on imdb, if it says something)
In drag race España the 5 placement was Dovima who had a huge redemption arc in the season, she went home after not doing the lipsync against Sagitaria, her old friend, on a very dramatic moment.
But in drag race España there was a top 3 and the 4 queen who went home, Pupi Poisson was a Big fan favorite, she was one of the most known queens in Spain and she won miss congeniality, plus she is doing a tv show with the host and other queens for season 2
In my opinion, Dovima Nurmi from Drag Race España also fell in the same category. Just when we see her human, vulnerable and more likeable self she curses herself by not lipsyncing and ends in the 5th place.
At least Ru made a nod to the fact that Katya should have been top three in the finale. Only time she's ever acknowledged making a mistake.

5th place is such a shitty placement, you're this close to making it to the top 4, then boom, the rug gets pulled from under you. But at that same time, most of these queens made it far enough in the competition to gain fans, when they didn't get a villain edit that is, and most of them went on to have very successful careers post-Drag Race so it doesn't really matter in the end. Plus, it's still a competition, someone has to go home every week and there can only be one winner (AS4 doesn't count in my book lol).
Also Vanda from Season 2 of Thailand. She was fan favorite and she placed 4th/5th
I went to the Vegas show on the 3rd of September and Derrick was truly underwhelming at best. The other girls just blew her out of the water.
I'm curious what production was pushing for with AS3 before Dela chose to leave, though with the voting a lot was still in the hands of the other queens.
In España the 5th was Dovima Nurmi, but I think more people were upset by the Queens Who ended up in 6th And 4th place.

Vanda Miss Joaquim and Bandit both share the 5th/4th place and were great fan favorites on Drag Race Thailand 2.
Thailand Season 1 - Amadiva, though I don't remember if that seemed cursed
Thailand Season 2 - THIS ONE is a prime example - Tormai literally WON the Snatch Game then that very same episode was sent home in 5th place based on runway, only for Kana and Kandy to be brought back, bumping her down to 7th. Vanda and Bandit were then sent home in a double sashay 4/5th place, missing out of the final and allowing the 2 returned queens into the top 3.
Holland Season 2 - 5th place got sent home instead of a queen who should've been disqualified (since it streamed so recently, not gonna spoiler it)
Espana - Dovima stood there during the lip sync and sent herself home in 5th place.

After they made it a top 4, 3/4 queens that placed sixth became miss congeniality. The other two are Nina Bo’nina (no miss congeniality that season) and Utica. So the curse know if it’s a top 3 or 4 and picks the person two placements before.

I actually don’t think it so much as a curse but it’s Rupaul and the production thinking of who will be voted Miss Congeniality. They know that if a Queen who is in the running makes it to the final (S1 being different) then they don’t qualify for the honor. Production starts to figure out who will be the fan favorite and if that queen doesn’t have a chance on winning the season, they allow them to have the strongest chance on getting Miss Congeniality so them staying long in the season, then getting eliminated right before the finale is the best way to make it happen. And it was pretty common until the Queens started voting for Miss Congeniality season 10 and onwards.

So looking at Thailand since you haven't watched the seasons, the fifth place was Amadiva/Jaja (double elimination) and Bandit/Vanda (another double elimination). Amadiva and Jaja weren't really considered robbed and weren't really fan favourites but season 2 is another story, bith of these queens are fab favourites and considered majorly robbed since Bandit got really overlooked and Vanda won that lip sync. So yea the curse stands for season 2. And on Espana its Dovima who wasn't fan favourite or robbed.

@@lostteen08 Yea, its sad but honestly it was fair Kana won the runway and Kandy won the maxi. If Angele wasn't in the bottom I think Vanda would've won (or Kandy since they would pull an Angele to safe her) since judges didn't seem to like Bandit and Kana didn't really do the best in the season.

@@user-ip3de3iy5g But Tabitha was in the bottom and sent home against a queen who all the other queens said should be disqualified for breaking the rules, and would've been on other franchises (see Willam, Miss Gimhuay). That seems a bit cursed.
