Another omission is the sale of treated clean water back to Johor from Singapore, at loss (sticking to pre-agreed prices in agreement) and beyond stipulated volume required due to shortage in Johor.
There is an error in the slide on Singaporean Key Stakeholders (at ard 13:30). PM Lee Hsien Loong is the current Prime Minister.
There’s much outdated, inaccurate information in this presentation, including the names of the Prime Ministers that’s so messed up. LOL.
The crux of the matter is not water sufficiency as Singapore has diversified water sources and will be self sufficient very soon (in fact already, if not for industrial needs).
The water agreement is tied to a UN filed treaty, the independence agreement when Singapore split from Malaysia. Hence any unilateral change breaches the agreement and calls into question the validity of its sovereignty.
Excellent learning opportunities from this video. Thanks you for sharing insights about such complex issue.
In my opinion, Malesia shall estimate the total water yield in thier country and estimate their present and future needs. As riperian rights, Malesia can use entire water, but considering infrastructure and water treatment cost, they shall share excess water to Singapore.
The Singapore shall estimate the present and future water needs and since they kept their desalination target of 30% remaining water needs shall be fulfilled by recycling and importing from Malesia. Considering cost economics of recycling and import cost, the financial viability may be worked out....
Of course situation may be worse during bad year, when there will be drought. In such year, water shaing will be difficult as water source and it's treatment is geographically distributed...
Indeed great learning.
Thanks

It’s not so academic. The agreement is part of a UN filed treaty, as part of Singapore’s independence proclamation and Malaysia’s recognition of it.
Any unilateral amendment = breach of agreement = not recognizing the independence agreement = Singapore’s sovereignty in question.
As a aquatic engineer in Miami that treated water that 30 race horses crapped in daily you guys need me
Very interesting. I. Your research, did you discover which Singapore contractor build the KT waterworks and pipe to Singapore?
Everything was peaceful until Mahathir became our PM again. I lived in Kedah, when we got flooded, it wasn't Mahathir who helped us, but it was the Singapore army and their engineers who helped us and provided water pumps. What isn't mentioned by our corrupted politicians is that some of us here are drinking water that's been filtered by Singapore since we purchase it back. Its a two way thing yet Mahathir is a myopic and confrontational leader.
wow never new that there is this kind of intense conflict between Malaysia and Singapore
I am Jakartans btw
@@Raslernovich The relationship have been cordial and largely cooperative till Mahathir(Singapore hater) became their PM again. Now the relationship is strained and will take time to rebuild the trust.
@@KeoNz correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't he the one who strengthens Malaysia relationship with Singapore? I think it is different now because Malaysia needs capital more than ever now because of the debt that signed with previous prime minister right? And water supply were th ones of good reason (even thought at the cost of friendship between country) to make Singapore cough up some money. Because I think the alternative are much worse considering that the Malaysian Govt had little choice to raise capital other than debt
@@Raslernovich you couldn't be further away from it lol. He has been driving a wedge between Singapore and Malaysia ever since he have been in office. Always detracting Malaysians from domestic issues by using Singapore as scapegoat such as the water issue and also the Pedra Branca dispute.
@@KeoNz how? Lol in Indonesia, Mahathir name is really good. I mean the prosperity Malaysia gained so far, many indonesians attributed it to him
Dr Susskind brought up one of the most important point, the Sultanate and the Constitution.
There are few reasons the Sultan of Johore able to do as he please, one, is the people's loyalty to the Sultanates. In the constitution, "Loyalty to the King and the nation (Taat kepada Raja dan negara)", by proxy the Sultans. It is further reinforced with stories and legends from the past that inspires loyalty to the Sultan, as if, it is in the blood to serve the Sultanate.
Another reason, the monarchs themselves sometimes can act like a "yakuza". There are rumors floating around of what happened to those who opposed the Sultan of Johore's decisions. However, some Sultanates are benign.
~Nationalism is one hell of a feeling.~
Corruption is also another reason (we cannot run away). More money can be made out of this deal means, more money to siphon and "lost" in circulation. Sometimes politicians' family are long overdue for a vacation, y'know.
Sometimes, you don't need public opinion because, how could you assured your sample size able to represent an entire populace. It needs a lot of funding to collect referrendum, you need many workers and data analysts if answers are open (not just "yes and no", "choose a,b,c"). In short, many politicians care only to the benefactor and those who will profit from this (general populace isn't one of them).
If deals were made later, there will be more desperation. More desperation means more coins invited to the coffers.
If no solution achieved, it will be a mutual assured destruction.
Since It contains un-updated information such as the Prime Minister of Singapore and Indonesia's political condition, the presented information and opinion potentially could be misleading.
Both countries need to embrace competition and let go of the control mania, ie they need to open up for competing suppliers of water and competing buyers; ie water demand and supply would have to be decentralized and thus taken away from the role of Government as government from nature thinks in terms of conflict and domination, and not in terms of competing for customers via product procurement, increasing quality and reducing costs.
Academic dreams… how do you transport millions of gallons daily? Pipeline cost and security comes into question.
The crux of the matter is not about water and competition or price and demand - it is tied to the independence agreement of Singapore.
Singapore has already diversified water sources including desalination, recycled water and will reach self sufficiency by 2040.
So any ro membrane workable?
Singapore rich can buy any other country why Malaysia cant build own cleaning dam.
Selling waiting to Singapore fills some wealthy Malaysian family banks account in Singapore buddy!!!!
Malaysia should have tax singapore higher cos they can afford to pay it.
Twisted logic. They could not have foresee Singapore grow into the powerhouse it is now and is also not ethical to do so when contract already signed
I am open to them selling higher when contract expires and time for renegotiation though.
why bring Chinese inside? that land, if the sultan wanted to develop, could be developed by anyone, even from USA, if the profit is good. It is very bad misinformation . The workers are mostly from Bangladesh in construction industry in Malaysia, does that mean Bangladesh is responsible for everything?
GO GO MALAYSIA SINGAPORE CONFLICT WATER
Poorly done presentation and clearly lacking in-depth research. Sounds bias as well.
