Hello, please club entire neuroscience lectures in OCW together for easy access
I’m an undiagnosed (undocumented) acquired savant. I’m estranged from my family and traumatized. I developed a larger than life but strange artistic skill about a year after recovering a repressed memory. I am suing a huge company for defamation and conspiracy (work related damage) and then I might try school. I have issues and I would like to figure out how to present my skill so that it can be documented. I watch MITOCW videos and try to stay in the loop.

Professor Kanwisher's lectures are really intresting and she teaches in a very calm and composed way. Whenever I feel low or tensed, I come here to watch her lectures on neuroscience. She is just amazing.

Professor Kanwisher seems to be an excellent lecturer. I was completely drawn in to this material because of her passion and sincerity. Also, it's rare, in my experience, to find a professor that ACTUALLY changes the structure/presentation of material to help students learn. This woman's compassion for others is awesome. She's a very accomplished researcher in the field, so there's a reason she loves the curriculum. She practically discovered pieces of it
i understand what you're saying, but it's a bit more complex than just the love for a curriculum.. for starters, most of us weren't that interested in school as teenagers and it's easier to 'blame' the teachers for it. the pupils also play a role in the teacher's enthusiasm, yes? :}

I'm a physics student, somehow algorithm recommended me this video. No regrets. There's a great value of learning about the ways of teaching is to be found here. Fabulous Teacher.
Vijay Patel. Actually it needs physics to solve the brain mind complex problem as the mental images the brain produces are holographic... Neural impulses, brain waves, holographic mental imagery, thoughts and emotions are all in the centre of physics.

I was watching videos on recycling Kitty litter containers & when one was over this started playing! I do watch all sorts of videos on UA-cam. Just last night I had a dream that turned into a nightmare. Visiting friends, then next day going on a footpath unable to remember their names or how to get there by the road. While on the path I realized it was to difficult for my mother since it was all going up a steep hill. My mother has been dead for over 29 years. She could not understand why I didn't know their names. In my dream state, & as I woke up, I worried about talking to my doctor about dementia/ Alzheimer's. I'm a high school graduate with one college course, 72 & alone without family support. I've also got a left frontal meningioma that I refused surgery on 15+ years ago due to my allergies to metals, including titanium & medical staples. The doctors said I would be dead within 2 years without the surgery. Unsolicited advice of a medical psychic, which I did not believe in at the time, I stopped eating foods with additives, preservatives & dyes & the tumor stopped growing as well as the horrific headaches that I had suffered for decades stopped. The extent of my allergy was demonstrated when in June 2014 I had three medical pins put in my broken wrist & I immediately developed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) with my entire arm including arm socket on fire & swelling from double to quadruple in size. Gabapentin was a blessed relief. When I followed the advice of my chiropractor & also acupuncturist who told me to stop eating gluten I was able to stop taking the gabapentin just like they said. The tiniest bit of gluten sets off the Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. I also have central sleep apnea, diagnosed in my early fifties with the doctor saying I've probably had it all my life based on my history. I would love it if I could help for my brain through a good clinic!

I find it fascinating how in the last 4 years, almost everything she is saying about AI is out of date. AI is currently absurdly good at performing all of these tasks, and actually outperform humans on it (whether you look at Google/Microsoft/Meta's AIs, they all outperform humans).
Crazy that the majority of this was done in the last 1 year. That paper she mentioned was coauthored by Geoffery Hinton who recently *left* Google because of how rapidly AI was growing.

Revelation 1:8 says that Jesus is the alpha and the omega. Luke and revelation is the ending times, and Jesus is returning back. So are you going to submit your life to him or no? Narrow is the path that leads to the gates of heaven, but only few people find it. The gates that is the path to destruction is where many people find it! Jesus loves you SO MUCH! That he died on the cross, and was resurrected from the dead 3 days later to give us eternal life.

Agree. As a native English speaker with normal hearing ability, I watch everything with English subtitles anyway. It means you don't miss anything in dialogue, which is great.
Im a native English speaker but when I can't use headphones I always mute it with subtitles so I don't disturb anyone, so adding subtitles gives anything a +1 in my book
Subtitles (esp. "real", not auto-generated) *are* a big deal. I always appreciate them.

I'm disabled, I don't get out much(at all), thanks for making and posting these big 'ol mit, many are grateful for it, social security does not allow a person to go to school or really anything so things like this at least allow me to learn something when im not in hospital or too sick.

If it wasn't some teenage stupidity 24.5 years before a few speeding tickets in N.Y... DMV is not allowing me to drive. That's what leaves me stuck home, Isolated... Your even allowed to work a little, very little, if you can.
Look up the poms , if you memorize them you might even be able to tell the people at the SSA how to do their job!!!
Don't let your disability stop you, there's always a way, or loophole , something. It may take longer, but just be grateful you got socal security and your not just left behind, not left for dead by society. (Even if isolation might make you feel that way). Like If you had a stroke and don't understand the concept of left anymore, make 3 rights. (I'm thinking of a story from the book "The man that mistook his wife for a hat", Highly recommend)
I hope you also have medicaid if you have to get to the hospital a lot, they help with transportation.
And hope your not in medicaid paydown , that's when your not allowed much for real, that's basically getting committed for being too old/disabled by adult protective services.... scary....
If you have the ambition/interest in some field to earn credits and get a degree , do it , even if it means one class a semester for decades.

@@petevenuti7355 Social security disability is a difficult system, the rules are varied and at times complicated it is not the same as social security which is I think what you mean, as well some states have different requirements or restrictions for certain federal aid. but for absolute certain it has saved my life and given me some dignity for however much of it i have left so I am quite grateful for it and all those that make it possible.

brain material transplant is theoretically possible.
I grew up in a house with lead in the paint and in the pipes. In addition I got a solid case of CPTSD from that period followed by all sorts of other injuries including multiple concussions and a couple of standing knockouts. With all I've been through at the age of 63 I'd love a brain transplant.
This is my favouraite line from the whole lecture. Because it’s so powerful and the same time very true as well. I wrote it down in my quote collection book, because it is very true 💯. I loved her way of explaining the whole topic. Also as a undergraduate psychology student is very interesting and knowledgeable to watch her lectures.

i believe i learned, in college, that hindu meditators knew tons about the mind/brain/time/mental projection you name it- they learned to “See”

That article on imagenet classification was cited 107,000 times since the time at which that photo was taken @35:34. That's mindblowing. Wish we had all these opencourseware lectures when I was younger. The amount of knowledge and questions I could've actively been pondering before even entering undergrad would've given me so much more reason to excel in my studies in order to be able to research these topics sooner. You only get so much time and mental plasticity to learn as much as you can, if not all that one can.
This is a great comment, as you point out we get only so much time to learn, meaning we could not over a lifetime go over the millions of examples that a deep net uses to learn, but still we learn. Also we don’t use anything approaching the kilowatts of energy that deep net require so it’s evident that they are not doing anything similar to the brain. Maybe studying the human brain could revolutionize AI and not evolve the current AI?
I'm an undergraduate engineering student majoring in mechatronics and waiting to do my PhD in neural engineering one day, thanks million times to MIT for doing these Open courses, this is such an unbelievable chance for the people who are interested in this subject to learn that from MIT

I saw the name Kanwisher and had to watch. She's a legend in the field of visual perception. Psychology graduates all over the world probably have her name embedded in their memory somewhere, lol
Primary school teacher here. Super hooked. I love how the professor sets out the grounds pretty quickly and uncovers the field of research without a moment of hesitation, with such enthusiasm that gives out wonderful invitations for all of her students to 'join in' the fun of the studies of this course. Amazing work, I look forward to the future sessions as well.

This is really helpful and cool because I am a high school student going through the most rigorous courses I can to prepare me to hopefully be able to go to a college such as MIT and the classes that I am not able to sit through in the future I can now. I had throat cancer. Harsh treatment for sure but I lived. 5 weeks without food took 100lbs off of me in 30 days. The malnutrician resulted in a lack of B1. That hit my brain hard. I was completely trashed. I was told that in 6 months, that was my new baseline normal.
I refused to accept that for various reasons that I had access to. I had to relearn how to walk, talk, function, I lost memory, rythem, pitch, balance, coordination and more. At 6 months I was still pretty trashed. So I just tried much much harder and pushed myself over and over and over. Endlessly. It's not been 3 years. The stuff I got back after 6 months was much more impressive than what I got in the first 6 months.
Now at 3 years, I am still working on it and I am still making very big strides. Where I am now, other people don't usually see that I have balance issues. My speech is much better. My rythem and pitch are back. I can carry things and deal with sizable weights now. I still can't go up a ladder so I joined a climbing gym. I do a bunch of other hard stuff as well. I just keep trying and things keep getting better.
I'm sorry "Bob" hasn't regained things. And I don't mean to give him advice since I'm not a doc or scientist. Howevcer, here is what I would do if I had that problem.
1. Intermittent fasting. It's done great things for me. My best advances happened at 3 years.
Lined up perfectly with my fasting schedule. There is research showing it helps with mice.
2. I would find a navigation game or I would make one. And I would do it multiple times a day.
Every day. I am convinced that which helped me progress the most, was my pushing myself
past what seemed to be my limitations.
I just can't stop listening to this woman and what a brilliant lecturer she is. Thank you MIT OCW. I am following you since the day you started and you are the best.

I don't know how I happened upon this lecture - initially on my smartphone. I migrated to my laptop to add a comment. That opening anecdotal story about her friend with the lime-size benign tumor in the brain really piqued my attention. It made me think of how many of us - myself included- are so very visual. On the other hand, I learned how some people have aphantasia and others lack internal monologues. It seemed to me her friend lost the ability to create internal visual maps. I suppose he would have a hard time navigating himself out of a hedge maze - which would be difficult enough for most people. Much of that function would rely on a strong visual memory and recall. Over the years, I've come to realize how most of us start out thinking that everyone is like ourselves internally - that most of us experience the world in the same way. It gradually dawns on us that we have individual differences - some more stark than others. For instance, people with superior autobiographical memories probably learned early on that their memory skills were NOT like those of most other people. However, if your memory recall is still fairly superior but does not stand out as starkly, it would take you a llittle longer to realize that if at all.
Wow! Denial is also a very powerful human experience. My friend just passed away from cancer and in retrospect I was ignoring some very basic observations about his condition. I thought he was just in the hospital getting treatment for pneumonia when in reality he had lung cancer. I downplayed the importance of the lump they found in his lung when they found a lump on his shoulder. I thought a lump on the shoulder was serious but treatable and totally focused on that rather than the lung! When I found out he died I was like oh shit! Of course! It’s really hard to remain objective when you love someone.
And if you remain objective and are focused on the main problem, you're called robot, monster and other negative stuff. I'm feeling with you.
Very powerful but so common. I suppose there is a reason it's considered one of the many stages of grief.

One of the problems our society has right now is the knowledge gap between people like Professor Kanwisher (whom from where I sit, seems as though she may hail from Krypton) and the common citizen. The sophistication at the elite edges of the population far outstrips that of the average person. It is very important that we close that gap and videos like this help do that. Professor Kanwisher is an interesting amazing n intelligent lecturer. She is able to project the lectures in details with simplicity. It is an opportunity n privileges to watch n listen to her online . Thank youtube channels for providing such a useful programmes for those who had non technical knowlegedes on the subjects. Hope to have more interesting subjects from MIT for the viewers in the internets.
I'm mind blown for two good reasons, 1. My background is Psychology yet it took me years to recognize that my mom have personality problems and paranoia, despite all the signs. It was really broke my heart. 2. I'm probably a sucker at that brain region too, I can recognize scenes but I don't have a good ability to reach places and imagine the route in my head, except for places I drive to every single day. Thank you MIT OCW and Dr. Kanwisher, for providing this quality class, I believe many of us in the comment section are super grateful to learn such interesting knowledge today..

I love MIT. I don’t belong in a university that amazing. I worked with 4 graduates. Smart and laid back and humble. I was pushy and driven trying to keep up. Mad respect!

This is very interesting of me as I had a stroke and lost very specific function, on of which is my ability to spell, and recall number, and take notes. spell check is the only reason I am cable of tipping this message.

My Dad recently died from a cancer in his brain. Similar to "Bob" his navigation was shot, couldn't recall where the next room was. But, he could draw and show his childhood house layout that he lived in for the first 15 years of his life. I wonder if older spatial cognisance is stored in a different part of the brain?

I'm not a medical student but I'm a data technician for the ACT Study (Adult Changes in Human Thought/Dementia/Dr. Crane/Dr. Erickson/UW/KP) in Seattle, WA. I've an art degree but have always been fascinated by neuropsychiatry, psychology, etc. so I am familiar with a lot of what you're discussing. I enjoyed listening to you tonight.
