For those, who cook a lot and like to make tea, very beneficial to plant also oregano, mint, rosemary, nettle, citrongrass also. These all by time can grow into big patches or bushes in the garden and you have more than enough for the rest of your life. Once these are planted and they established their roots firmly, no need any attention, it will grow forever.

I stuck unrooted cuttings in the ground at the end of October right before winter in New Hampshire. It stayed green all winter even after 2 feet of snow covered it for 6 months. And now that it is spring it looked like it died and then all new sprigs came out of the ground and I have a perfectly healthy thyme plant!

Very useful. I saw a lot of sources telling me to split the thyme, but none of them said how to do that. I also like that you showed every part of the process, including taking the leaves off the stem for cooking.

I understand this a seven-year-old video, but I feel my comment is appropriate and necessary. I found the video to be very informative and useful to me. Unfortunately, I already killed my thyme I bought earlier this year, but, there is next year.
You've earned a like and a subscriber from me.
    THANKS!!!!!!

Have strangely enough had most success with Thymus citriodorus up here in the north. It survives cold and windy winters, the others mostly do to, but they suffer more and do not really recover enough to spread.

3:25 is that a whipporwhill in the background?
Also, you are brave, lifting up mats of plants with gloves. Because .. OMG SPIDERS! LOLOL I've seen too many of them scuttling out from underneath when I'm weeding in the garden, to ever work without gloves. unless i can really see well where I'm working in, and ascertain that there (probably) aren't any. Spider bites are not nice. :(
But .. very informative video, thank you!! I have inherited a huge garden full of creeping thyme when I moved into a new house, (am a complete newbie to gardening!); and wanted to see how to do cuttings for friends and relatives. This was a great help.

Thyme is one of my favourite herbs and one of the first I ever grew (from seed). But still I learnt something new from watching your video. In Australia where I now live (after New Zealand) our Thyme here doesn't grow as big as yours because of the poor soil etc. But enjoyed watching your videos. Thank you for posting.

I have lemon thyme growing in-between the flat rocks in my terrace. I planted a variety including lemon, silver edged and creeping thyme. It’s such an aromatic and pretty plant. Now I’m confident about transplanting some. Do you think after the plant blooms is the best time to do this?

  • @FontediCalore

thumbs up on everything but I beat you on drying it. I just put it inside an empty paper envelope, even a letter one and stick it somewhere with a peg.
    1) no dust gets into it
    2) when dry you can crush it inside its envelope. Also I might sometimes pick and dry its flowers and not its leaves but that's my preference.

I have been making some wooden 1.5mtr * 0.5mtr * 0.5mtr planters for my appt terraces, BUT for some unknown reason the 2 Potted Thyme specimens I received died after being replanted. The medium in the planters is free draining compost. I have installed an automatic irrigation system, (functions twice a day @12hr intervals for 6mins. Plants receive about 5>6 hrs direct sunlight each day. So, what else can I do to help the replacement plants survive, any suggestions ?

New at gardening herbs etc. & doing so in pots, thank God "I feel" I got that right, lol... My beautiful daughter bought me a "Lemon Thyme plant" that is bloomed, so should I cut it down & use it now, all help would be deeply appreciated & I live in the Pacific NW, finally got a few sunny days starting on this day of writing this... Not to many videos on this plant, it seems & what all can these be used for, hmm, so many questions & a bit nervous as I'd love to keep all my herbs for years, but already made a mistake, as I over watered my "lavender & lemon thyme". Also trying to grow Thai & sweet basil, Rosemary & Oregano so now I at least know, NOT to do so, blushing... The more you can explain would help & appreciated, as not sure on any of these, but trying with what I have left... It does not help to have dementia/cOnFuSiOn, lol, but I can't let my girls down, want to make them proud of me, as I am of them... 😘 🌹🌈💞🎵🌷🌺🌸😆👏👍💫🌟💛 ☘️

I'm sure there is some quality to which you are speaking but what I heard doesn't make sense. "The plant has more essential oils in the the morning". A plant can't have exhibit a fat in the morning and then digest it's own fat so that it is no longer be there by the afternoon or evening. I do believe something more complicated is happening.
