Wow! I've watched a lot videos and have talked to a lot of gardeners, but this is best and easiest to learn tutorial that I have seen. Thanks very much for your time in doing this how-to. My father was a great gardener, he could grow anything. But, he never took the time to propagate Rosemary. It was the only herb he never did. He would just buy or be given one from another Italian gardener friends every spring. He could graft and do all kinds of stuff. He was born here in the U.S., but raised on his grandparent's farm in the 1920's and 30's in Italy. That is the only thing that I can think of that he never taught me. Thanks again for the lesson! Take care Jeff!

Jeff, I just watched your video on compost tea from 4 years ago. Practice makes perfect because you do outstanding videos now. Experience is a wonderful thing. More please.
Yes, I've had nothing but success rooting it in water..... Truth though, many of the woody plants and perennials are just rooted in straight soil, so there's people on both sides, lol!

When it comes to herb seeds, try sprinkling them on the surface and covering them with wet single ply tissue paper. Since the seeds are so tiny, they don't need to be buried. Keep it wet and avoid letting the paper dry out, and the seeds should germinate within a week. The plants will still take a very long time to grow to maturity, so you need to be patient.
I have yet to over winter a rosemary in Northern Michigan. I have brought them in for the winter and this year managed to kill it anyhow. I'll be visiting the nursery again this spring.
Ugghh...sorry to hear that Elizabeth. I'd leave the plants outside...but go for extreme shelter. Snow is actually awesome because it insulates them. Winter wind chill just seems to do so much damage.

Hi, I just love your videos you have the best explanation how to grow herbs and other things and your garden or at home. Just love it. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward for more videos. Hello from Canada ewa
Phenomenal explanations. Simple, easy to follow, and the tutorial answers all your questions. This is simply well done. I'm looking forward to more! You have a following in me! Thank you!
Thank you for this video as I am definitely needing to start another rosemary plant. Mine was half killed last year by other plants and a tree that came down during a storm. Really great timing. Thanks again.
Thank you for taking time and making the video. You keep it simple and encourage people to try it and not scare them/overly complicate it. I got one 6 months back from a nursery, and it's adjusted to my garden, and doing ok. While one could easily go and buy more, there is a pleasure in propagating from a cutting. There are many possibilities for failures. With Mint cuttings, I have had a lot of luck with rooting, however, never got it moved from water to soil - successfully. In my next (cutting, water rooting, and then back to soil) attempt - will surely try and get the soil soaked, before putting the plant into it.
I never saw a video for gardening so well made. Congratulations on It, 's awesome for the details, covering all points. If this time I cannot have my rosemary grown, I'll give up, the problem is me.
I have a 10 year old potted rosemary. The bottom halfway of the stems are bare. Is there anyway of getting growth back on these half bare stems? I've been a gardener for over 50 years, and have had my own nursery growing 250+ varieties of gingers, and butterfly 🦋 plants, and my own herbs 🌿. Thyme and rosemary are my favorites but, not much luck propagating them, or keeping them pretty. Thank you for sharing such an awesome video. I enjoy the fact that you explain everything.
Great video. I tried making cuttings at the end of fall a year ago. Now I know why it was a complete bust. Will give it another shot in a couple months. Thanks!
ditto what Michelle said, this is a thorough, well-made video, especially for someone who has an interest in & just started gardening. i especially liked the summary - recap at the end, emphasizing important points to pay attention to.
Jeff, I've tried a million ways to grow rosemary and kill it everytime! I live in southern California and should have great success but am not having any luck at all. I can't root it in water ! It rots! I'll keep trying watching this video. (and all your wonderful videos). My other problem is sweet basil. I love both of these plants. I know that once I finally get them going it will be smooth sailing . I absolutely WILL NOT GIVE UP!!! PS, the elephant garlic you helped me with is growing beautifully! I'm so excited!
Hi Jeff. Great video with lots of useful tips on how to propogate Rosemary, im currently doing this & hoping they root. Thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
Great video. Thanks! I haven't been successful at this, and now I know why. I've been doing it at the wrong time of the year. Can't wait to try it again very soon. Also, I hope you didn't throw those lovely rosemary leaves away. I'd have to roast some type of meat with them or chop them up and dry them. Or, at the very least, pop them into some mesh bags and put them in your clothing drawers as a sachet. The smell is wonderful!
@theripetomatofarms, @4:30, and added benefit from stripping the bottom half of leaves is you now have a good bit of herb for a compound butter. Excellent on steaks!
A must watch for those having difficulty propagating rosemary like me. Such a complete guide looking forward to following this in the tropics. Will update when successful
I have too much rosemary already but still going to propagate new plants. Can't resist the aroma of fresh rosemary and I'm using it more in cooking. Wish I was in a non 5A growing zone where I could leave in the ground year round and let it become a large bushy aromatic herb. However, it seems to be happy in various size containers in my unheated greenhouse.
Rosemary might be the hardest plants that I try to propagate. I would say my success rate is around 10% but it is enough to keep mt garden growing. I will have to try some of these tips to get better propagation.
2:30 I use this method of just taking small 2in / 5cm young cuttings, and stick them in soil where I have other things growing - it's not a 100% success rate, but with how simple and easy it is to do, it's good enough to make a ton of plants. I usually just take rosemary cuttings in spring and put them directly in the same soil around tomatoes or other plants I grow for summer, then in the end once those summer plants are done, I end up with whatever rosemary plants survived, and I can relocate them were and when needed.

I've got a rosemary plant that i believe is aging out. It no longer grows. I have tried for MONTHS to get a new plant with no success... till I watched this. I thank you so much
This is perfect. I had a beautiful thriving rosemary in my front garden but then we moved. I took cuttings thought they had rooted successfully but they didn't. So, my plan is going to be to go buy one rosemary plant and help it grow through this year. And then put this into practice next spring. Thank you so much
Wow! Awesome information. My Rosemary plant is still outdoor surviving in the Massachusetts Cold. The whole plant is less than 8 inches, so hopefully I get some growth before spring so I can get some cuttings to transplant.
Best video I have seen over the yrs! I love rosemary but have not been successful in over wintering indoors or outdoors. I live in Zone 6b on Cape Cod and have bought at least a dozen rosemary plants that have not survived. I will try to root this spring if my current one survives and/or another new one. I wonder if you can root cut organic rosemary from the grocery store. Sometimes they sell bunches w very long stems.
Great video Jeff as usual, here in Missouri zone 6b I brought my rosemary in the house and it seems to be doing good. So I’m going to try and propagate some this winter. Thanks so much for your great videos and hard work.
Right on RLB. 6b gets pretty cold....have you ever left one outside to see if it survives? Snow helps as its excellent insulation.....but exposed with your winter winds....I can see why you bring it in.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I left one old a couple of years ago and it died. I even put it out of the wind. Here where I live we don’t get a lot of snow, but we do get a lot of freezing temps down in the negative degrees for overnight lows.
Thank you for your videos, It is very helpful! I've been trying to have Rosemary for a long time (I bought a vase from a fresh market, or someone gave me a branch. I tried many different ways and turned to have the leaves dried (brown) very quickly, even when I put them in the water to grow the roots. I put roots in the soil with rocks and sand for drainage; I put them under the sun (4 hours) or totally on the shades or full sun, the same varieties of trying I did with watering. I tried many different ways to cultivate It, but no luck so far. I really want this plant, so I'll not give up. Do you have some idea what could be the problem? I really appreciate your answer or if anybody here has the same experience, please feel free to share.
Great video! I tried twice now, after winter they were dead. I live in Canada. I use rosemary leaves tea to apply on my hair and set for 15 to 20 minutes before regular washing. It protect hair loss.
Hi buddy, great videos, very informative 👍 I think I've seen a video of yours showing how to use rooting hormone (may have been the Doff brand you were using) can you recall, or suggest which video it mightve been? Thanks for your time, Jim 😀👍
I thank you very much for the video. Helps a lot. I was wondering if rooting hormone would help in anyway? Or what plants do rooting hormone work well with?
This was a really great video. One question: this is my first time growing rosemary outside and as its a perennial do i need to do anything to the bush to get it ready for the winter? Thx.
Thanks a bunch. This video is packed with the most helpful tips and it's easy to understand. I started putting my cuttings in water a week ago, but nothing happened and I thought I did it wrong again. Now I know I have to have patience and wait for another week or so. A very elementary question - what type of potting soil do I need to have? This is my first time growing rosemary. So far I could only grow mint, lol!

I've got a rosemary plant that i believe is aging out. It no longer grows. I have tried for MONTHS to get a new plant with no success... till I watched this. I thank you so much
Great rosemary video,,,,,,thanks!
Cheers Christy, thanks so much for watching!
Tnx for step by step illustration!!
Cheers, thanks for watching!
This is perfect. I had a beautiful thriving rosemary in my front garden but then we moved. I took cuttings thought they had rooted successfully but they didn't. So, my plan is going to be to go buy one rosemary plant and help it grow through this year. And then put this into practice next spring. Thank you so much
Thanks Deb.... That's the perfect use case for cuttings. Sorry that one didn't work out for you!
Wow! Awesome information. My Rosemary plant is still outdoor surviving in the Massachusetts Cold. The whole plant is less than 8 inches, so hopefully I get some growth before spring so I can get some cuttings to transplant.
Nice! Sounds like a tough one!
Thanks so much! Best of luck with the overwintering..... Keep us updated!!
I’m trying this! Thanks for the information!!
Just subbed after watching 2 videos about rosemary😝 i love rosemary
Hi Jane, often you can have more success with spring shoots that are actively growing.
😀🎉 CAN'T WAIT! 💓
Hope the weekend is treating you right Jamie!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms 🙄 You too, Jeff! ☺🍾🥂💓

Absolutely wonderful thank you for sharing this video 📹👌👍
Thanks so much for watching! :-)
Awesome. Just started rooting some using honey to help …
This method makes a ton of sense.
Give it a try and let us know how you do!
Thank you very much for this great video. Really appreciate the information.
Cheers, thanks so much for watching!
I’m going to try this with lavender.
Works almost identical!
Perfect video Thanks 🙏🙏
Cheers Phillippe, thanks for watching! 🙂
Hi buddy, great videos, very informative 👍 I think I've seen a video of yours showing how to use rooting hormone (may have been the Doff brand you were using) can you recall, or suggest which video it mightve been? Thanks for your time, Jim 😀👍
Hey Jim, thanks for watching. The video you're after was probably this one: ua-cam.com/video/_TVAFGAG-8Y/v-deo.html
Great instructions.
Thank u for this great video. Were u using hardwood to root your rosemary cuttings??
I thank you very much for the video. Helps a lot. I was wondering if rooting hormone would help in anyway? Or what plants do rooting hormone work well with?
Yes, rooting hormone can speed the process up for all cuttings, including Rosemary.
Thanks , I'll get to work, great teaching..
This was a really great video. One question: this is my first time growing rosemary outside and as its a perennial do i need to do anything to the bush to get it ready for the winter? Thx.
Thanks for sharing!!!😊
Do you fertilize them, as they're growing? If so, what is a good fertilizer and how often?
Mine also roots came from the same locations, first time rooting rosemary
Very informative, thanks
Thanks a bunch. This video is packed with the most helpful tips and it's easy to understand. I started putting my cuttings in water a week ago, but nothing happened and I thought I did it wrong again. Now I know I have to have patience and wait for another week or so. A very elementary question - what type of potting soil do I need to have? This is my first time growing rosemary. So far I could only grow mint, lol!
Thanks Nancy! For soil, a simple organic potting mix will do just fine. Coarse works as well, Rosemary isn't picky! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thank you. I can't wait to try it out.
hi Nancy had you success?
