Blender is like stabbing in the dark. Its easier to print out the items, cut them and glue together.

I tried following both tutorials, sadly it doesn't seem to work for me, it just won't cut through! Any suggestions?

Not sure what's going on, but this does not work at all.

Can you please help me? I need to split something in blender just the same way you did. Do you chat on Google Meet?

5.13 this work only when you have easy vertex pattern. Tutorial completely useless for coumplex sty

I know this is an old tutorial, but I just used this to successfully split an stl file. You show the entire process clearly. Thank you

When I try to use Knife Projection in the second method I get an error message that says "No other selected objects has wire or boundary edges to use for projection"

welp, I have a huge assembly, it would take me months to split it all. rip SW users

half the short cuts he uses don't even work in my blender program....i think this video is out of date.

Correct. As you can see in the video, I am using Blender 2.79 which was current at the time it was recorded.

I have been braking my head trying to figure out how to do this in Blender. Good job.

Another tool for splitting a model with precision, is bisect.

i already know how to cut an object, but man this is way easier on more precises. love it

    Worked great, thanks!
New to Blender and very curious why a face needs to be triangulated and then made into quads and can't be left as just a face

Usually stl files are triangulated. I wanted the model quadrangulated without ngons and so I showed how to do that.
Coming from a background in making game models, I always work in quads...I know, I know, everything ends up in triangles in the end (render engine), but working with quads is so much more clean and efficient for modeling anything and it works better for subdivisions, animations, deformations, controlling low poly counts, etc. Work in quads whenever you can to control topology unless you are trying to control the way a model will triangulate, or if it really doesn't matter for your application. Look up on the internet "When are ngons bad" for more info.
Yes, you can have n-gons...but again, it is not best practice for the kinds of things that I have always built. A clean quad-based model is what I always aim for. If you are doing something like a 3D print model and it doesn't really matter, then by all means save time and let the Ngons stay.
I hope that confused you less and not more : )

There's a lot of whoosh, but it's all stuff I need to learn if I want to do more vrchat customisation (though I think it uses tris). Certainly interesting, thanks for the insight!

hi man! much faster and better way to do this - use hardops. Create simple plane(q-(c) sharpen) - then select both of objects - then q - slash. well done! (: its can be multiple planes.

I know you are right. There are many add-ons that make the job easier. My intent was to show a way to do it with no add-ons in stock Blender, but I appreciate you posting that so people have another way to do it if they want to use the Hard-Ops paid add-on.

Im new to blender, i have tried this. I have an STL open, K select the area to be cut worked, hit enter worked so area is selected with a yellow line, but when i hit V i get Error cannot rip selected faces. Any help please, desperate to get this to work. Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear that you are having issues. I know both the methods work and I just don't have any idea what you might be doing wrong in the workflow that is hanging you up. Do you have anyway that you can screen record what you are doing? 1. Enable STL addon. 2. Import stl that you want to split. 3. Go to Front Ortho view (Numpad 1, Numpad 5). 4. Go to Edit Mode. 5. Wireframe Viewport Shading. 6. Make sure nothing is selected (A). 7. Knife Tool (K,Z,C) then LMB click at the start point the LMB click at the end point and then press Enter. Don't click after that or you will lose your edge selection. 8. With the cut edges selected, press V as that is the rip command. You now have two mesh parts in one object. Right after you rip it, press G to move and check to see if it separated and then press RMB to cancel the move operation. 9. Select linked all (Ctrl+L) 10. Separate the selected part with P so that you have two objects in Object Mode. Where are you stuck in all of that?

I'm thinking i have a different version on blender to yours. I can import the STL, but when i hit the numbers 1 then 5 the model disappears :(

update, after i press V, i then hit G but i cant move the cut object
