  • How to add some extra detail to your painted furniture - add glaze! Sometimes called antiquing glaze, this product is easier to work with than dark wax, and gives a really fun finish. I'm using General Finishes Glaze Effects in this video - it's a water based liquid glaze that takes your furniture to the next level!

    Chip Brush - amzn.to/2U7qbZT

    Great video thanks. I find glazing very intimidating, I tried it once on a credenza with lots of detail and by the end I was pulling my hair out lol
    I ended with a sticky mess and very uneven strokes. I do like how it gets in every crevice of the wood and looks amazing. You make it look easy so maybe I’ll give it another go😉

      Yes, I think many people find it intimidating! I think the key is keeping it wet and having some Krud Kutter handy. Give it a try and see how you do!!

    Very nice. Thanks for the tutorial. I’m painting and antiquing a church pew and I didn’t know whether I should put a sealer first, before antiquing it. I now know to seal it BEFORE antiquing it. Also, I didn’t know using the Krud Cutter and spray bottle were so useful. You saved me from potentially ruining my church pew. This tutorial was very helpful.

    You can also dip a textured sponge into a bowl of water and strain it a little then dip it into a bowl of glaze and sponge it on .. its a really nice antique effect when using milk paint over chalk paint 🎨

    Thank you for all the tips. Glad I saw this before antiquing an ornate mirror frame with metallics. Plan to use chalk paint Old White, Annie Sloan, then paint over with white metallic. Next, let dry then antique with clear finish glaze mixed with dark metal metallic. Will test on samples first. Pray for me!!

    I love the look of this. I have a buffet table that I am going to convert to a vanity and have painted it white using regular latex paint that I would like to now glaze to bring out its details. . If I want to use glaze like you did above, should I topcoat it with general finishes BEFORE I glaze then top coat again? I want to make sure I can move the glaze around like you did in the video. And since you dont need too much glaze or top coat for that matter, do you have another brand that you recommend that might be a bit more budget friendly that comes in a smaller size?
    Love your videos, please keep them coming :)

    thank you for this informative video! great job. I understand that this glazing technique works well with the types of furniture that have frames, curves, engravings etc. where the glaze stays after wiping, but what if I need to glase a simple painted stool that doesn't have those? Its very basic stool, just legs and the top, and I wonder what stays and where when I cover it with the glaze and wipe afterwards. I painted it in nice yellow, but wanted to add some used antique look with dark edges and some dark patina around the joints. But the issue is that using your technique the glaze at the edges, where I do want it to stay, will most probaly get wiped off. What do you think I shall do to make it look like a want? And would the whole thing work if I use watered down dark acrylic paint over the main layer of paint, also acrylic? thank you!

    I found this video in may purchased all of the stuff then couldn’t find it again for months. My first tries were a disaster. I used beyond paint and the general finish black glaze. Looked horrible. My water sprayer was too wet and wrong crud cutter was used (didn’t even know they had different kinds🤷‍♀️). Found this again, Thank to Lord, and realized I missed one IMPORTANT point. Put a top coat under glaze of paint doesn’t have a sheen. Amazing difference! Now following so I don’t lose you. Thank you so much! Moral of the story is watch whole video carefully, write down points and for goodness sake subscribe… or at least book mark or you will never find the same video again!!! Thank you!

    I was thinking of painting my previously cherry stained oak kitchen cabs in a antique white GF milk paint. I want to glaze with GF van dyke brown. I was thinking of also using the GF pearl effects paint in champagne as another layer. Do you think I should use the pearl finishes after the antique white, but before I glaze with van dyke brown? Or do you think I should paint antique white, glaze, and then top coat i the champagne? I don’t have an extra door to practice on.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 років тому +1

      That sounds amazing! I think I would do Antique White, Glaze, then Pearl Effects. If you would feel better practicing, I would either do 1 door and play with it (you can always paint it over and start again) or go to a home recycling center, they usually have old cabinet doors for just a few dollars. I hope that helps! Good luck!!

      Yes, you may want to test it in a corner if you can. If the gloss is too much, take some 220 grit sandpaper and lightly sand (just to dull the shine a bit) before applying the glaze. That should work!

      No, although some people use it the same way (which works in most cases). Gel stain is really meant to cover wood (finished or unfinished) and is oil based, which makes it harder to work with in this kind of application.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 років тому

      This happens when I layer paint, but I haven't had it happen with the glaze. General Finishes Milk Paint is not one you can "re-wet" so once it's on and cured it doesn't usually pull back up. I think the glaze is just the right consistency to add layers, not remove the paint underneath.

    • @mattmoses42

      Roots & Wings Furniture LLC you said once it’s cured? The piece you were working on in the video, how long had it been painted before you glazed? I thought curing took about 30 days.

    I've never had milk paint not be chippy except on raw wood. Why use milk paint if not for the chipping? Why not use cheaper latex paint?

    Can the glaze be applied over chalk paint?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, but I would recommend a top coat over the chalk paint before you glaze. If you don't the glaze will soak into the chalk paint and be a bit of a mess.

      Roots & Wings Furniture & Home What kind of top coat do you recommend putting on the chalk paint? Would a polyacrylic work?

  • @ermejia13

    It's easy to use glaze on chalk paint if you apply clear glaze before tinted glaze, and if you don't like it you can remove it with clear glaze

    Why even deal with Krud Kutter, a rag wet with water will do the exact same thing if it's a water based glaze, which it should be

  • @keekeedavis3521
    @keekeedavis3521 3 роки тому

    Well, call me crazy but I just don’t understand why it wasn’t just painted light gray lol,... especially or at least on the top. Otherwise, why bother washing the table in its entirety then use Krud kutter to make the main parts white again when you could just Kay the glaze right where you want it to be on the low spots and Voila!
