At 7:46, it all became "clear" to me, much of being in a cult is similar to my active alcoholism! Much of what I did in those days was in direct opposition to all I had been taught and were against my inner moral compass. So grateful to be free of it for 35 years. So grateful for all of those who have also been released from the mental, physical, and spiritual prison of Scientology, and so many other destructive cults. All my best wishes for continued strength. Excellent interview.
Lawrence Wright is the real deal - an amazingly well researched man who is calm and considered in the face of utter, swivel eyed madness (a phrase I have to attribute to Clarkson. J, a UK TV auto journalist).
My two other favorites, are the Kim Masters interview with Wright, and the discussion by Slate Book Club of "Going Clear..." book, that trio of Slate book reviewers was the absolute best delving into his book. And Kim Masters knows Scientology, and Wright gets into things deeper than anyone. I was a 27 year staffer, worked at Author Services Inc, the faux literary agency "above" the "church" and read loads of behind the scenes Hubbard despatches to the upper echelon staff running Scientology, plus I held lower support jobs in the "upper" ranks in my final years. And there is new info in the final pages of Wright's book, "Going Clear..." which to this day hasn't been truly understood and appreciated for the devastating revelations of the final details of Hubbard's life. I've written in detail countlessly in praise of Wright getting those final months of Hubbard's life details into "Going Clear..." and it is info all Scientologsits who know what is talked about, it will drastically give them a final picture of Hubbard that is "treasonous" on Hubbard's part. Hubbard in a nutshell, admitted he'd failed. And further details that I'll not explain here. Read the ending of Wright's book the "Epilogue" chapter is spectacular.
17:23 apparently the reason he holds the world record is because Scientology pushes to publish his books in every language around the world so they can lay claim to the award. It's a completely manufactured achievement, and not due to LRH being the most prolific writer.
Critics today don't face anything like they would've say 20 years ago (see Paulette Cooper) the "Church" has infinitely more enemies than they could effectively attack now...
Amazing to think they relate this to a "religion",,, about attacking, causing issues etc with those who left-- my sister singlehandedly did all of that to me... if only people could see that is it the evil spirit within someone and not the person themselves... but I get that disconnection part-- as I finally had to remove myself from that relationship the tipping point was when her husband sexually assaulted me right in front of her & she blamed me for it, I was sitting there minding my own business when he did it...these types of people find a person Achilles heel and extorts it to keep their victims attached.... I hope someone or group can finally take this church down.
Auditoring sessions cant be helpful in any way. Its a widespread misbelief that re-living traumatic experiences can cure the trauma. It only makes people vulnerable and susceptible to even more false and dangerous concepts.
In America? Scientology has proven that they're covered by the First Amendment. Shut them down, then you're going to have to start shutting down every 501c3 designated establishment.
It's the price we pay for freedom. Besides, where would it end? How long before we end up doing things like what the Chinese and Indian Governments do to Muslims? Or what Muslim Governments do to Christians? Or like what the "American Christian Taliban" wishes they could do to deists and agnostics?
Hubbard many yrs ago said he wanted to make a religion from sci fi to test how gullible people were and could he ACTUALLY pull off a religion from sci fi. I remember watching it
To..to...today jr!! Omg how did this woman get her job!? You have two great/interesting individuals and you keep stepping over your words and can’t say peoples names correctly. Way to do your homework
With the argument of religion/cult aside, I am so curious to see where scientology is in history later on. Hopefully, to me, gone. But I would have hoped that for the Mormon "religion" as well. So, we'll see. I at least hope David disappears. Then those in it might have a chance to actually be happy.
To put your interrogation in simpler terms by dividing it in a two-part question : what is the difference between a church, a religion and a cult and is scientology a church ?
For taxing purposes yes. There is case law that attempt to define the concept of "religion" for other legal purposes (e.g. religious discrimination in workplace, or family court proceedings, etc...) . A church, mosque, or temple, is the physical manifestation of a religion (group of people constituting a church, group of buildings, etc...)
But I've wondered about this a lot. The government caused Waco. So what decides the difference been religion and a cult? I don't personally think beliefs should come into it because certain "actual" religions have plenty of glad in their own doctrine. But it's the practices that get me. Scientology and Mormons, disconnect families, attack outsiders, use physical force, use child labor, block out the outside world. Basically form a prison of belief, which is why I love the title of the book. So to me, it comes down to it the practices. Especially when it's at the hands of one person. That's really it with scientology and Mormons. You have Dave/Hubbard and Warren Jeffs dictating every single thing the people of their faith do, breathe, believe. When it's at the hands of one man is when I believe it becomes a cult. But there are arguments there with the beginning of other religions. But "real" religions have the ability to become cults with break offs. Most cult leaders say they speak to jesus. So to me, it's when it comes down to one man dictating the whole belief. Which could be why the beginning of religions like Christianity were met with such resistance.
PC (that is "pre-clear) folders are labelled, in every Scientology organization, whether it is a mission or a Class V org, by CoS policy, with the words "Priest - Penitent", meaning they are carry the same legal protections as communications between a wife and husband or an attorney and his client...........

So sorry you stumbled across a plot more complicated than a rom-com and it confused you. How much did it cost you to watch this? $0? Thought so. It amazes me how often people complain about free content, like their mere click entitled them to something most people (and in fact the producers of the interview did) pay a lot of money to create. Get over yourself.

I think Lawrence Wright jumped in two or three times or so, right after Alex had said something. Perhaps this is why the amount of talking by them in this video was so uneven. Even so, each is very articulate.
I watched the "scientology going clear" movie, but it is not really about going clear in sense of English language but rather a PR job for scientology, informing about going clear process etc. The title is confusing, just as this entire thing about scientology is, luring people and after a while making them run away as fast as they can, at least that what you can take out from the stories the ex scientologists share.
Anna Czurylo, Your post is totally erroneous. “Going Clear” is a documentary thar exposes the very dark side of Scientology. Your claim to have watched it suspect as you know nothing about it. To begin with, it’s a documentary, not a movie. You then state that the Church od Scientology tries to make it’s members run away. In truth, any members that do manage to escape are chased, stalked, coerced, and threatened in an effort to make them return. You sound more like a Scientologist troll attempting to discredit Mr. Gibney and Mr. Wright than anything else. To be more concise, my dear, you are full of shit.
Part of the major scripture in Christianity involves a bet between God and the devil. What's your point? Religion is just a giant man made construct regardless.
I have to say on the Mitt Romney comment,on the contrary I knew quite a few ppl myself included who couldn’t take Romney seriously because he believed in make believe crap (Mormonism)
I believe that the son of god died on a cross to repent for my sins and rose from the dead. I believe he was born via immaculate conception, so I would be a hypocrite to judge. Believe what you want. I don’t care. But you can’t call yourself a religion and enjoy tax exempt status if you are ripping people off, force family disconnection and demand slave labor from the parishioners children or devoted adults. These conditions are only present in the most radical sect of traditional religions. In Scientology it is course of business.
That is bull S..I found 3 Ron Hubbard books one of them dianetics t, fear and I cannot remember the other. WeI found them in a Thrift Store at three books for a dollar... So those books can be found at five for a dime in Thrift Shops across America.
Those are collectors items, and it was pure coincidence that she stumbled on them. An original print of Dianetics can go for as much as $9,500 in the right condition. The History of Man for even more. Just because you don't understand the monetary value of what you have, doesn't mean you're right.

This style is much more relaxed. Going with what has been said there.. trying to understand the why.. this only a theory.. Hubbard who was a writer anyway .. found a way to try and explain what was to compare to what could be. He wasn't a stupid man.. that much is clear. The fact that there are so many accounts toward religious or cultural beliefs shows Hubbard was but one. Let's just say theoretically.. he thought about that. Then considered how hard would it be to start a new religion.. without any factual evidence. Create a starting point.. then build a world around that. Enid Blyton wrote about fairies and wishing chairs and faraway magical trees.. knowing it was for entertaining purposes.. but in doing so she was as if a god because she was creator. She created a world that was enjoyed by many around the world. As a child I wanted it to be true.. that was my reality within the fantasy. However I knew it wasn't.. but there was always a part of me that wished it could be. Why is it that there is a place within the human heart to desire what isn't real but could be real? That is in part why I don't like to be too involved because it's easy to lose site of other things within the world. I don't really like to confine my thinking to it can only be done this way.. yet sometimes fall into that trap and once I have realised I have.. I pull away again. Wanting to connect to something and actually connecting are two very different things. The desire, the willingness can be there .. but then doubts start to come into play because something not sure what it is but something is still missing. It's like not feeling complete .. without that completeness.. there is a constant feeling of dissatisfaction which isn't personal towards anyone.. just the way it is. Moments of feeling that life return are there.. glimpses of colour and the feeling of freedom are there but then very quickly lost again. It leads to a state of frustration. Maybe Hubbard wasn't as eccentric as he may seem.. but not entirely honest about his intentions, or maybe unaware because he was working towards an understanding and simple fact is he convinced a lot of people to join him despite the reputation he must have had even early on. What does that say then about the people who were joining the ranks? What seperated him from Charlie Manson?? Were they not seemingly men who had their own reason to seek a family of sorts? Again it shows the realities of the state of the broader community that such things have been so easily able to be created.. yet how quickly we can turn when walking away.. I say that because I have been within churches myself. Seeking.. finding a need fulfilled short term.. but then that need to put back again rears its head. That's why I thought maybe I needed a man who wasn't at home all the time. Allowing me my space.. he having his.. and enjoying the time together more because of that. However those who interefered have destroyed any possibility of such a thing being viable now.
Joseph Nicholas coincidentally enough, Larry Wright graduated from the same university as John Kennedy Toole, the author of Confederacy of Dunces. Then he went on to get an MFA and win a Pulitzer Prize. Scientology is led by a high school drop out. It’s fairly evident which side are the dunces.
Get a grip on your soup cans Joseph. The ostrich approach will serve you much better than engagement with those better informed and well amused by the utter ridiculousness of the crap belief system you are attempting to defend. Keep defending the indefensible. We all have seen for ourselves. And we are repulsed. You and all of your thetans crawl back to your money grubbing cult and disconnect from real humans. The ashtray might find you interesting. Pathetic waste. Maybe next life you'll get a clue 😉
. MR Wright's book is so ludicrous it belongs in a supermarket tabloid. The book is an error-filled, unsubstantiated bigoted anti-Scientology book. The Church has produced a white paper to identify some of the more than 200 errors so far discovered in Mr. Wright’s book. British and Canadian publishers have already chosen not to print it, which speaks volumes about their confidence in its factual accuracy.
I am a scientologist too Krister! L Ron Hubbard was and is a God to everyone 🙌 🙏 ❤! We all wa the true bloodline, L Ron Hubbards son to lead the church to infinity ♾ 🙏 😀 🙌 😉
Better yet, who wants to tell him that the Bible is a collection of myths and legends handed down from generation to generation until they were recorded by an elite group of scribes that sometimes edited the text to suit their own narrative? Or includes mistakes and/or errors that were never corrected and then copied on and on. All religions are man-made.

Here we have a confederation of dunces.
Ms Min ruined this for me, sorry.
terrible interviewer
. MR Wright's book is so ludicrous it belongs in a supermarket tabloid. The book is an error-filled, unsubstantiated bigoted anti-Scientology book. The Church has produced a white paper to identify some of the more than 200 errors so far discovered in Mr. Wright’s book. British and Canadian publishers have already chosen not to print it, which speaks volumes about their confidence in its factual accuracy.
ooooooo we got a live one here!!! The dark lord Xenu sent us
Stupid People write stupid comments
I am a scientologist too Krister! L Ron Hubbard was and is a God to everyone 🙌 🙏 ❤! We all wa the true bloodline, L Ron Hubbards son to lead the church to infinity ♾ 🙏 😀 🙌 😉
You're full of it. I hope you get your head out of the sand someday, I really do care.
Are you a Scientologist?
Religion of any kind will send you to Hell. It`s about Salvation through Jesus Christ. Holy Bible KJV.
...who wants to tell him christianity is a religion too?
Oh the irony.
Haha the irony..
