this was the best possible ending a doctor who episode could have, i mean it's set in the 60's, this works so well
With so many shows these days going darker and more serious, it is a nice breath of fresh air to watch something so lighthearted, goofy, and unashamedly campy.
@brookse746 I am aware of that. I am just saying that it is nice to see a show take a break from being darker and edgier to just have fun and be goofy.
Losing doctor who to woke freaks. Is that so nice to see? Great work turned to a netflix adaptation
@@brookse746I mean we did get him playing the guitar on a tank.
@@iamsoup1210ah yes doctor who totally just now started being woke. There totally aren’t several episodes written by an actual card carrying communist in classic, one of which addresses colonialism where the indigenous people and colonizers come to an agreement only for the UN to bomb them anyways. And the nazi dalek allegory. And the brexit episode. And the anti war episode decrying how higher powers shove unrelated soldiers together for entertainment with no care of their lives. Totally the most woke this show has ever been is having black main character.

I love the sinister clues hidden in this song: Janis Goblin's scream appears at 0:40 and 1:24, plus the lyric "I think this song will never end" as Henry Arbinger appears in the doorway - indicating that Maestro may not be quite as banished as we'd hope.
I’m so suprised no one else was not pointing out the scream so I’m glad you did oml

@damienrevell7544 many people seem to not like this song. While not the best and maybe went a tiny bit long, I still find it a catchy and enjoyable song.
ITS CRAP
To anyone that finds the musical number jarring, think of it this way: The Toymaker's Pantheon seem to be reality warping beings outside of our universe, and the Maestro was suppressing Music for decades. She affected the timeline for decades. It is like the universe was holding in all this musical energy and with the Maestro banished it could be released, but needs to snap back into place, so a musical number is it all coming out in a burst. The universe is more musical for a bit.
My view of it was
When the toymaker was banished the state of play lingerie for what seems to be hours letting the tardis be doubled
So this was akin to that but this time a state of music lingering so the doctor decided to have some fun with it
Also explains the cross walk piano
Completely agree, but Maestro used they/them pronouns
Huh. I didn't really think of it like that, I was more thinking that the entire episode was about how music and dancing are important to humans so ending with a musical number seems appropriate (albeit silly but Doctor Who has always been a little silly).
I'll take a musical number over talking babies and a snot monster any day of the week.

I absolutely hate musicals and always refuse to watch them. This… is amazing 😂
It fits perfectly because of the theme of the episode oof
If you liked this, I would suggest Rocky Horror Picture Show.
If you enjoyed this, maybe you just haven’t found the right musical. Especially since you said you refuse to give *any* of them a chance. It’s a very diverse genre.
Doesn’t the lyrics “there’s always a twist at the end” have the same notes as the giggles
Yes it does 😉
With music returned to the world, humanity ascends into a full out musical with the “magic” of song returned, and the doctor and ruby just vibe in it… that’s my interpretation 😅 and I love it❤
Yes! Absolutely, in fact the implication could be that's why the Abbey Road sessions were so iconic. Because they were the recorded distillation of all that musical exuberance.
I felt the same way about this. With music having been gone for awhile the sudden return of it I think would cause the world to break out into a musical. The power of music was so important in this episode and I could see the return of music leading to this fun chaos.
As good as this song is it strikes me as sinister for some reason
It has the same notes as the giggle, so that might be a part of it
Yeah, everyone is bashing it as a cheesy number (and it is) but that's what makes it uncanny. It comes out of nowhere and goes out in the same way. Like, what the fuck is going on?
The melodies are off. It’s actually quite uncomfortable to listen to.
God I am actually surprised to find more positive comments on this than negative…but honest to god all the old grumps are the ones who bring the mood down after every episode, honestly this is what Doctor Who should be creepy, mysterious and sometimes dark….and occasionally fun and campy and also this song is such a bop, this better get a single release like The Goblin So g 😊❤️🥳😇
I can’t be the only one who feels this way though 🫣
Obviously you're going to find mostly positive comments if you look up the scene online. People who hated this moment aren't going to be choosing to watch it again on UA-cam.

While I think your opinion is valid, I personally thought this episode was a new low for the show. At first I was optimistic about the start of this new era, but the only positive I found is to keep my expectations that this show could possibly redeem itself in check.
To each their own, though.

Thank you for being respectful, totally understand why this wouldn’t be for everyone. It is rather pantomime.
Since the cameos in this are playing themselves, I assume upon defeating The Maestro there is a state of music, similar to The Toymakers state of play, which pulls people from different times to join the music and allows Zebra crossings to become the piano from Big 1988
OMG I GET IT NOW. "THERE'S ALWAYS A TWIST AT THE END" IS LOOSELY SUNG TO THE TOYMAKER'S GIGGLE! WOWWWWWW
Holy shit! You’re right!!!
Something tells me the toymaker will return.
I love that this series of doctor who has become just the most chaotic musical lol
It’s the same arpeggio as the giggle! The twist is hidden in plain sight
The twist is that the Maestro’s son (Harbinger) appears meaning that they might return in a future episode.

Not to mention Harbinger was aslo in this musical number
YES! You're the first person I've seen comment this. I'm not musically trained, so wouldn't know the notes, but the main chorus is definitely the Giggle laugh.
ha ha ha HA ha ha haaa
Ah, I'm so sorry to be a party pooper, but those notes aren't right - so it isn't the same sequence as the Giggle. Although I agree it's similar, so may still be a subtle reference!
Real sequence goes:
There's always a twist
B - E - G#
x2
There's always a twist at the end
B - E - G# - F# - E
Or, transposed to C major:
G - C - E
G - C - E
G - C - E - D - C

You know. I really do like this. The 15th Doctor just makes me smile. I hope he continues for a long time to come
For some reason I really want a villain somewhere at the end of the season or somewhere near the end of the 15th doctor that tells us the reason why the doctor (and a few other people) can break the fourth wall. Idk, do you agree?
All the celestial do that. Maybe the Doctor ...
I'd like it if it went unexplained: so in the next season the fourth wall goes back up and no-one acknowledges it, just for fun.
If you’re hoping for explanations, I’d recommend a different show 😂
I agree. If RTD did something well, it was the seasonal arcs that were tied together by a repeating theme, like those winks. I feel like we get an answer, but the twist might be, that those winks were never intended for us, the audience, but for something else we aren't yet aware of. The only thing I never liked about RTD's story arcs was, that they ended up being existential threatening or introduced humanity as a whole to alien life way too early, just for them to push a reset button at the end. I hope the reset button is a thing of the past by now. But I really liked his arcs.
The existential threats especially could hardly escalate even more, and only threats that felt personal to the doctor would maybe have a larger impact. The other seasons since RTD's initial depature tried to deal with those. So I'm almost glad we got a bit of cosmic horror back by inviting beings beyond scientific reasoning or the Doctors knowledge into reality.
I also really didn't enjoy the other unresolved arcs that happened since RTD's initial departure. Like why did the TARDIS blow up? Who knows? Who controlled the TARDIS? Who knows? We got fan-theories, but never any true answers. Or all that other stuff that led nowhere and was dropped and forgotten eventually. So I really enjoy the return of the little hints at the end (or somewhere in the middle) of the episodes, because I know it will be resolved eventually in a hopefully satisfying manner.

Any other Schmigadoon fans let out a gleeful chuckle at the unlikely coincidence of this moment appearing in Who?
YES! THIS! Doctor Who, at its core, is meant to be campy as hell! And this song is so silly and fun and full of whimsy! Might be the first big music number we’ve gotten, but it’s quintessential Doctor Who goodness :D
Maybe there has been a camp element in Doctor Who meaning that it has always been whimsical and ironic but that isn't the same as infusing the show with LBGTQ messaging. The rating are pretty poor for the first two episodes. If it carries on like this I doubt the show will continue for many more years.
I don't see how this is doctor who as it's core but cool that you feel this way
Say what you will about the new who but they do know how to have fun
I feel like this episode is criticizing one of the biggest issues of the 13th era and that’s the music. It was always so understated and ambient it felt like the Aeolian tones the maestro is trying to achieve. Meanwhile this is telling us hey Murray Gold is back and we’re going haaard

1:47 singing in the rain
This is so catchy! What a funny and meta way to end the episode.
I don't know how it works, but the more I listen to this song the more I like it...
My headcanon:
It’s the toy maker and his legions. This felt so forced. As though the characters had no control over doing this. The balloons too. What did the toy maker turn his victims to in the giggle you ask? Ballons! I think it’s going to be revealed that this was all the toymakers doing and despite being bound in salt he’s still just trolling the universe.
this is exactly what i'm thinking. he's messing with this world or they're either trapped in a show, an alternate universe, or some sorta simulation that the toymaster / the pantheon is controlling.
i know RTD said that he's adding more fantasy but the very loud and noticeable differences to the usual universe and its physics/reality based world is wayyyyyy too noticeable to not be setting up something massive.
the way the doctor winks before singing is exactly what the toymaker does, right down to the sound effect and everything.
- ruby made it somehow snow?
- she immediately turned into another species and changed all of history just because she stepped on a butterfly?
- they keep breaking the 4th wall and have done so in every episode this era
- susan twist is playing a different character in every episode and 15 mentions susan plus the twist song within the same episode
- 15 hit the tardis with a hammer and magically made a second one? makes absolutely no sense in the universe we know especially since there's a deleted scene where 10 gives the meta-crisis doctor a piece of the tardis which he says takes 1,000 years to grow (donna tells them how to speed it up but still it would be impossible in the usual world to just make another tardis instantaneously without some sort of explanation)
SO many things are hinting at something and i'm surprised more fans aren't talking about it

So they had an episode with the beatles in it and for some reason when they wanted to do a musical number with "twist" as the theme they decided not to use the most obvious choice "Twist and shout" by the Beatles.
I mean I know it most likely would have cost them a lot of money to use it, but I mean come on.
If they had done a cover version of Twist and Shout it wouldn't have cost a lot to license... It's only Beatles recordings that cost a lot to license, but licensing the composition and doing a cover photo is relatively cheap, which is how a low budget film like "Yesterday" was able to have so many Beatles-written songs.
I was actually expecting a cover version of Twist and Shout when I first saw a promotional photo from the singing scene a few weeks ago......... Super disappointing.
@@lachlanstauntsAlso, The Beatles don’t have a writing credit on Twist And Shout
@@slandersir7255 Yep. Which would mean it would be even cheaper to license. Even though it's not technically a Beatles song, most people associate it with the Beatles and would have been the perfect song to end an otherwise disappointing episode.

This is the second time I’ve seen a dance number for the 15th Doctor, and though not in the credits I can’t help thinking Disney called in favors from Kenny Omega to do choreography
Do you mean Kenny Ortega?
I was VERY sceptical of the concept of this episode, was definitely in the ‘musicals don’t belong in Doctor Who’ camp. This is BRILLIANT
Actually don't mind the musical number but the song sucks. They should've just licensed a bop from the 60s and it would've been awesome
At first, when the Doctor says there's always a twist at the end, I thought they were going to use the song The Twist by Chubby Checker, which was used in Spider-Man 3.
Clearly, it took a bit after Maestro's banishment for proper music and lyrics to return.
