During the first weekend of May, Norfolk & Western "J Class" 4-8-4 #611 returned to her old stomping grounds on the N&W mainline, where her and her sisters galloped through the flats going as fast as they could. It was on this mainline, nicknamed "The Racetrack", where sister engine #610 made her notorious 110mph run that gave the J Class their reputation of being the apex of passenger steam power. The trips this weekend consisted of two round trip excursions between Lynchburg, VA and Petersburg, VA via Crewe, where the Norfolk & Western once serviced their locomotives and equipment and now serves as a crew change point for both the Blue Ridge Division and Pocahontas Division. Now, please enjoy this video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
glorious no other word for her
The Suffolk-to-Petersburg Straightaway is where the Norfolk & Western J Classes reached triple digit speeds since that's 52 miles long of straight, flat track. Petersburg to Crewe is much more curvy and hilly, I'm not sure if they were able to hit 110 mph there, but I did hear that they were able to hit 110 mph between Petersburg and Suffolk. I sure would love it if the 611 could do excursions out to Norfolk again like it did in the 1980s.
I road on it in the mid 90's from Iaeger.wv to Wheeling.wv,was a great ride loved it.
She's the big Engine That Could
Absolutely love this. She is gorgeous with her steam plume laid down her back. She's not allowed to gallop at 70 mph anymore. She's a thoroughbred built for speed. She's now like a captive pet for show. Sad really.
a classic and beautiful train ..just adore this!!
Beautiful locations. Nicely done!
Y does it sound like she has multiple whistles blowing at the same time?
And y does her steam plume keep changing color?
I wish they could open up the ol girl and let her do 60-70mph like she did in the age of steam like she was meant to. I know its for safety reasons, but with more safety features these days, they could do again safely, and the engine operates more efficiently when at higher speeds.
I'm sure some remember the "good ol' days" of the original Norfolk Southern Steam Program when Bob Claytor had her opened up and running at a good 70mph clip when the operating conditions warranted.
Andrew Davis the reason is safety concerns
The Metra line near Chicago doesn't care about MPH......
drglinski i know they dont
@@Cbazz what safety that's what they are ment to due that's why there called mainline locomotives.
Filmed exceptionally well and super awesome the video lacks the 'click click clicking' that is ever so present in train videos. Nice job!
That opening scene was just EPIC.

So beautiful! Love it. Thank you so much for taking these and sharing.
Very nicely done! Sucks that you had overcast weather for your last few shots...
Kind of like watching a caged animal. 611 on the race track going 40... that being said, phenomenal coverage!
man this is true. Pity to see this in 2021 at Strasburg like my dog confined to the leash in a fenced in yard.
A wonderful capture. Thanks for the "How to," do it right! Super production quality!
Great video, & thumbnail picture. 👍
great video. I happened to be on the Silver Lariat Saturday morning
2:11 scene is just beautiful.
"Western" word is mean that "wastage"...! m.m.a.rana
