    @ 10.02 this reminds me. As a Brit can I just say one of the things Americans actually do best on railways (rather than bigger) is steam train whistles. What a haunting sound echoing down the valley....

    • @davidbarnes1877
      @davidbarnes1877 6 років тому

      Have a listen to the whistle on 3830 on 3813 Spirit of progress 1962

    • @NCXDesigns
      @NCXDesigns 6 років тому

      Back in the Golden age of Steam, our railroads made distinct whistles to differentiate themselves from other roads. They even tuned them to a point where if they were copies, they wouldn't sound the same. Class J 611 is a great example of this.
      Back in 2015 she wore a replica J Class Whistle, it sounded awful compared to her original. They tried to tune it multiple times and it would not sound like her original no matter what they did.
      So in 2016, she got another whistle, it was a similar whistle to her original, and the sound of it was closer, but it was still not the same as her original.
      to hear the original, you need to watch videos of her in the 90's. It's nicknamed a "Hooter" whistle because it sounds like a steamboat, but the N&W 1218 has the most distinct whistle yet. It's also a Hooter, but it also sounds like Steam Boat more so than 611 ever did.

    • @allmightypuffn
      @allmightypuffn 5 років тому

      wait till you hear the 4014's whistle. by far the lowest octave there is. and we dont realy have all bigger engines here, as most are the same size or even smaller then yours that run on the mainline, its just the main difference between us is that your engines were primarily used for passenger, so they needed speed, where ours were made for power to pull up and over the numerous mountain passes we have here. altho your trains will outrun ours, ours would flat out drag yours backwards down the tracks like they wernt even there. both of us however have some awesome and beautiful engines.

      techneclly they are GP30u's. the R&N didn't upgrade them past what ATSF did and only gave them a new designation. they still have a gp30 prime mover just recieved the 645 power assemblies. these are the cylinders and cylinder heads which increases the cylinder capacity to 645 spec's while still using the 567D block and crankshaft. These prime movers are referred to as 16-645D's because they are "modified" versions of the 16-567D3 prime movers.

    Why was the excursion pulled by 425 empty?

    • @NCXDesigns
      @NCXDesigns 6 років тому +2

      It was pulling up to the station to pick up the passengers it brought. They do this every year during the fall season.
      Basically what happened was:
      The switcher pushed the train back past the switch point so 425 could connect on her track while the switcher pulls away, giving time for the Tourist train that just pulled in to offload its passengers so it could clear the way for the 425 special to pull up the station platform to begin boarding.
      What you saw at the end of the video was 425 moving up to do just that, it wasn't leaving Jim Thorpe yet.
      This railroad is so professional at making all these moves to keep things moving without messing up the schedule. Oct-Dec 425 comes out to play alot on the mainline.
      It will be interesting to see what specials happen when 2102 comes back. I'm so excited, I never got to see it run.
