What if He Falls? The Terrifying Reality Behind Filming “Free Solo” | Op-Docs
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 лис 2018
- In 2017, when Alex Honnold made his stunning free-solo ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan, he was taking an unimaginable risk: nearly three thousand feet of climbing without any ropes or safety equipment. But was the climb made even riskier by the filmmakers who accompanied him?
In “What if He Falls?” filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin take us inside the process of documenting Honnold’s quest for climbing glory - and the ethical calculus of filming a friend who could, with the slip of a finger, plummet to his death.

@@_Nibi if you have to ask that, I have a feeling that no matter what anyone tells you won't be enough, but here it goes: because they had to deal with not only the physical challenges of climbing themselves with 45-50 pounds of equipment and 500-1000 feet of rope, but also the realization that they may very well be filming Alex's last moments alive.
what do you mean why their friend is at risk of dying infront of them

It felt like this doc was more about how awesome and moral the makers of the documentary were rather than Alex actually climbing the mountain.
With that said, what an amazing human being this man Alex is. I get scare watching him climb, yet he's cool as a cucumber. Not to mention the insanity endurance, strength and athleticism it takes to pull something like this off.
Rare rare super human this dude is.
Uh...how so? The documentary makes no mention of morality by the filmmakers. This video is New York Times interviewing the directors on how they filmed it. You understand this isn't the documentary right? Please tell me you're smarter than this.
The above video is a short documentary. Not only is it self-evident that's it's a documentary and what the above poster was referring to, it even says it's a documentary at the start. Please tell me you're smarter than this.
4 + yrs later he is still with us.
God Bless.
I remember seeing “El Capitan” in person and thinking “that doesn’t look crazy high”. (Obviously it’s huge, but to the naked eye not so much). We were like 250 yards from it. Then our guide told us to try and spot anyone climbing it. I looked using my naked eye and saw absolutely no one after carefully scanning for a few minutes. You’d think you can see someone cuz it doesn’t look crazy big… but then our guide told us that there were actually 4 people climbing it. We got on some binoculars and spotted them. They looked like little tiny ants. That’s when I realized how BIG “El Capitan” really is. I was mesmerized.
Wow interesting perspective!
Now you know how the Hubble Telescope feels when it tries to spot any of the flags on the moon. (It can't.)
It’s was so big your brain couldn’t put it into perspective 🤯

THIS is true mountain climbing. I have been seeing several summit videos of Everest, K2 etc, this easily tops the list as the most astonishing and daring feat of mountain climbing.
I've done the cables on the backside of Half Dome and that is as close to climbing anything I will ever do. Alex Honnold is one very amazing person, beside the free solo of El Cap he hold several other amazing records. He set the fastest time for climbing Yosemite's triple crown of El Cap, front face of Half Dome and Mt. Watkins in just over 18 hours. Truly an amazing person.
My hands were sweating so hard watching this
Me too but my balls were sweating more
I did first free solo of my couch but no documentary cus people filming me it would have just been too stressful I would probably die
TyBishops same
glad im not the only one!!
No kidding, first time I see my hand sweat like that and I wasn't even that nervous watching it
They just won an Oscar for this documentary
That is how I heard of this movie! My god what a stressful hobby
Well deserved!
Yes because they are actually trying they’re hardest unlike movie actor that don’t even do they’re full roll

Tim....people like Alex don't care about trophies.......and for other people who call him selfish - what does that man owe anyone else?
Alex and this whole crew are absolutely incredible.
I'm French. I visited Yosemite Park, in 2010. I saw these monster of Capitan....we have in France some freak Spidermans like P Eidlinger, A Robert, and others...A Honnold and all the others are some heroes of our world...what incredible performances... total respect for them.
Alex after the greatest free solo climb in human history: yay
He's like fix his hair
"I'm delighted"

Actually, Tommy Caldwell's climb was much harder, especially when you consider he has no left index finger. I would bet Alex can't climb the Dawn Wall.
Why he climbing a macOS background?
lmao
why u gotta do this to me. lmfao.

I've watched this about 10 times and I still can't get enough
The hardest part is there to watch him do it, i can't imagine the rollercoaster of emotions his friends had watching him

'I climbed El Cap without a rope.'
'oh'

Hey man everyone has their own El Cap. If yours happens to be running 20 miles then goddamnit you should be proud. You did something that was hard for you.
That's impressive.... running 20 miles..
Running 20 miles in 19 minutes? Now that’s a similar feat.
@@rbanerjee605 its also impossible lmao.
Kudos to the film crew for successfully protecting the integrity of Alex's experience, and producing this masterpiece in the process.
How can someone "protect" other people's lives if these people are risking everything anyways?
Thank you for your response, as is much appreciated. I did not film Alex climbing, but here are my thoughts based upon the Free Solo filmmaker’s comments. In certain instances, the filmmakers felt that they needed to give Alex more space to climb, so that they would not become a distraction and cause their friend Alex to fall. Alex in turn did not want to die in front of his friends. Just imagine climbing a very difficult section of rock next to people with cameras filming close to you, that alone is a distraction, but what if one of them moves suddenly or makes a distracting noise. This was identified by the filmmakers as potentially problematic during the pitch 23 boulder problem crux, which is the hardest part of the climb. The film crew decided to film this section remotely, which proved to be the perfect balance, as it protected the integrity of Alex's experience by giving him the space that he needed to climb without the distractions of a camera crew. In other words, the film crew captured the incredible film footage they needed to produce an award-winning film, while giving Alex both the physical space and the head space he needed to focus on his climbing.
what it also means is that they wanted him to not feel suffocated during what could have been his last climb. he's used to just man and wall; that's what he's willing to die for. they want to be sure he wouldn't think "i wish they weren't here" as he fell, if he did. that was for their own sake as much as his.

@@NobleVagabond2552 Grip strength tests measure how much force your whole body can produce. In terms of just hand muscle strenght this guy is definitely world class.
