Just did this job on my sons 2003 Deville. Bought the whole assembly and removed the unit from the bracket. Old one sucks to get out.( I would suggest trimming the heat floor vent as stated in the video). Must pry out the old unit. It will come off and no you didnt break anything when you hear the snap. If its OEM you will need the 5.5 mm socket then you will never need the 5.5 mm socket again . How did we live without it. The new unit ,if you buy the whole assembly, approx 80.00 at auto zone, comes with 9/32 screw/ bolts. Either a socket or phillips driver will work, suggest the screw driver (stubby unit) to start the screws then finish with 1/4 " ratchet set. Use bit of grease on the new unit drive hole so it will go in easier. connect the 12 volt connector and all is well. If you are a big guy you will be saying words you didnt even know were swears while your lying on your back looking up into a giant mess.. It great right?
This actuator fails because of a crack in the plastic gear. New gears can be purchased on ebay cheaply. It took me 40 min to replace the actuator. I also had to do this job the hard way which took me all day requiring dash removal and some puzzle solving b/c the pins have to go in a certain way for proper operation. I found the correct updated plastic gear after I did the job the hard way. I would also mention that newer actuator have a different design than the original ( newer actuator is slotted in center, original have teeth in center. Hopefully this will save someone alot of time.
So I know it's a tight spot and Im willing to cut the vent off to get better access but I'm curious about the ez way...are you saying there is a way to do the job without having to remove anything???
@@davetherave6569 I have a new actuator, i took off the 3 screws that hold the gear in place but its on tight, i mean super tight and all screws are removed, once you removed teh screws was the actuator gearbox on the car hard to pull off? because if its as hard to pull off as this new is i in trouble
Great video, if you decided to remove the actuator only instead of replacing the whole assembly. I wanted to mention a/c delco actuator shown here or if you ordered another source online will not fit on the original wheel thats already in your car. if you don’t mind dorman brand that unit will snap into place as it should. I practiced on a deville at the salvage yard first. before I left I got that (beloved ) wheel some extra pins an more than enough gold screws from the destruction I created just incase one fell under carpet vents etc. don’t forget your pocket metal magnet retriever wand as well may need it. adding to your supply of tools a correct deep well socket probably would help get a good start on them screws other than a short extension. Another good idea lay a wash cloth over opened vent to prevent things falling through that lovable tight area. I installed mine the way this guy did definitely took more time for me. although I’m not sure what was more amusing the frame of mind you find yourself in doing it in tight places or satisfaction when it was over. ;)
I finally figured out the location of this mode door actuator on my 2000 Cadillac Deville. It wasn't where it's shown in this video, at all. Three kick panels / panels have to be removed, first, to see it. First remove the outer, horizontal (about 2 feet long) kick panel directly above your knees when in seated position in driver's seat. Next, remove the U-shaped center kick panel that wraps around the central radio area controls cluster. Last, remove the underlying black plastic, fairly large panel under under the horizontal knee bolster kick panel. It's held on with two tiny gold bolts, and then it just pulls straight out, very easy to remove. This panel /cover goes to the floor air vents. There will be a small section of the air vent (about 2.5x2.5 inches square) that snugs into this panel on the right side of it that you must cut out with a hack saw / dremel tool cutter so you can better access and remove the mode door actuator which is located behind it in a cluster of three other similar actuators under the left side of the radio area toward the front. You are accessing these from the drivers side floor board area looking up and toward the front left center, behind the radio. Put your hand on it while you turn the car and AC on and you'll feel it "clicking" (due to stripped gear), and it will be attached to the big white cam with the three pins behind it, which you will see moving, as shown in the video. Once I manually got the mode door actuator to settle down into the AC "Vents" position, by turning it, nudging it to finish turning clockwise all the way to get the air to blow out the upper vents, I unplugged the orange wiring harness pin connector to it so that now it will stay in place and in that position every time I turn the car on with AC on, - blowing through the center vents. In the meantime, I'm going to order the new actuator I need and replace the bad one with it.
I have the same problem with my 2003 deville ..I appreciate your video and glad I can do this myself . But can you post or email or explain how to remove the kick panel and little more detail
I did this job, and cutting off the vent tube is the way to go. You can use duct tape to seal it up when you're done. It's really difficult to get those pins back into the cam, so I wrapped a piece of wire around them to hold them in place, put on the cam, and pulled the wire out when they were seated.
Man, that sounds even more impossible than just the normal way. Those little white arms would fall off if I barely touched them. I installed the entire assembly thinking I had the pins in right and when I turned the car on nothing worked. I wasted 3 hours in the cold and 130 bucks I'm pretty pissed.
@@pezztf1680 Sorry that happened, but I don't understand why it did. I've had two of these cars and won't get another one. Some tricks I've learned are to use duct tape wrapped around your fingers with the sticky side out so you can hold things like nuts and bolts where you can't see what you're doing. Also, you can get a bag of cable ties and chain them together to hold things out of the way so you can reach the whatever-it-is away from your working area. For that actuator with the cam, it's easier to just replace the actuator and leave the cam alone. And finally, save the actuators. They really don't break usually and if you need spare parts, they are handy to have. MY theory is that the computer just loses track of what they are doing and kicks out the error code or stops feeding info by mistake. They come apart and you can see what's going on inside. The motors will work with a 9 volt battery. Don't be afraid to cut something open or use glue or whatever. These cars aren't made to be fixed and they start breaking around 70K. Try not to buy Chinese replacement parts also.
@@werefeat0356 My '01 DeVille had 125k miles on it and it still runs strong (which I know is rare) but trust me I have replaced just the actuator 4 times with Chinese replacements and they all broke within 2 - 4 months. I finally had enough so I got the whole AC Delco assembly for that rediculous price from the dealership and at first I tried to just pull the actuator off the new bracket and cam and put it on the old one, but after struggling for 20 mins I read on this very thread that the AC Delco unit won't fit on the original bracket and cam and all 3 parts will need re installed, which led me to the issue I have now. I appreciate the feedback though, I'm going to give her another go this evening, I just wish there was a better method to be absolutely positive that those pins are in place correctly, because I was sure I had it right. Also damn dear impossible to install the bracket without taking one of my hands off the cam. I need my hand on it though to make sure it doesn't come off the pins. Fuuuuck.
@@pezztf1680 Yeah. Well it's been awhile since I did that job. But I remember that if I took out the radio, I could see down into the inside of the cam. Just crazy. I looped the wire around all of the followers so they were all at the smallest diameter and then put the cam on. The computer checks out the cam and followers when it boots up, so it doesn't make any difference where they are as long as they are all engaged somewhere. And I did cut that vent off to be able to reach in. I just used duct tape to wrap it back on. I had 170K on my first one before I wrecked it. The car could have been fixed but the insurance company claimed it was totaled. That meant that the title was messed up for insurance and re-sales purposed. That head gasket issue was only for a few years and by 2001 the failures were greatly reduced. It could be that the actuators I was using were from China. The actuator needs to be lined up in the same position as the one you removed. The easiest way to do this job is to remove the actuator itself (3 screws) not the whole housing.

2000 Seville dhs...when I turn my heat on it only gets hot on passenger side and stays cold on driver side. What needs changed. Is it an actuator on driver side since the people in comments had the passenger side acting different than what you told it to do or is it still the actuator in glove box that needs changed
I just fixed this exact issue today but it was on an 01 Oldsmobile and from what I can gather it’s nearly identical as yours. In this video he’s changing the mode door (direct air flow through the feet, face, and defrost). Your issue is the blend door on the driver side. The blend door open and closes to allow hot or cold air into the cabin. There’s one on driver and passenger and in your case the driver side isn’t opening and closing right. Could be the door it’s self stuck but I would about guarantee it’s the actuator. Once you take off the kick plate on the driver side, look toward the inside of the car (the radio wall I guess you could say) and the blend door will be the first actuator you come to (the one closest to you). It’s a pain but take it off and you can use pliers and turn the arm it attaches to manually to get heat or a/c. If this works the problem is the actuator. If it doesn’t, the door it’s self is probable stuck and... well good luck lol In my case today the actuator works but it wasn’t opening and closing the door all the way so it was the same as if it wasn’t working at all. This comment might be too late to help you and probably confusing. And it may be slightly different than what I explained considering it’s a different car but the concept is the exact same. Good luck man!
Some people are able to get the actuator off without removing the cam and bracket. You can reuse your old cam and bracket if the actuator pops off easy. But if you decide to switch the whole thing (cam, actuator, and bracket), I got mine from Amazon for $56.23. Part ACDelco 15-72654.
If you are sure you have all 3 screws removed there is nothing else holding it. May just need to pri it harder between the actuator and the gear. Try using a flat head screw driver.

Unfortunately, I forgot to tape the trimmed floor vent back. Do you think it's OK or does it have any function?
When installing the actuator, does it need to be adjusted to fit the gear? Do we rotate it with a screw driver?
The actuator needs to be lined up in the same position as the one you removed. The easiest way to do this job is to remove the actuator itself (3 screws) not the whole housing.
2004 Cadillac Deville. The panel you are referring to, is it the panel above the gas and brake pedal? If this is the correct panel, I do not see the actuator which is located at my right knee besides the radio. Thank you sir.
Thinking Mom Good question I would like to know too
After 2003 I believe the actuator is located on the passenger side right next to glove compartment. Must remove glove compartment
A panel has to be removed to see the actuator. It is above the gas pedal. The actuator has orange covered wires going to it and sits upright.
@@davetherave6569 Which panel has to be removed? The one that surrounds the stereo unit in the center? The only other one I have on my 2000 Deville runs horizontally above the brake and gas pedals from left to right - I don't think it's under this one, is it? Thanks.
@@steveandrews8301 Hey Steve. You are correct. It's black and may have a couple of 7mm screws holding it up
I have a different situation; I have cold air on the (front) driver side but HOT on the passenger side ; I assume its the blend door actuator on the passenger side . I need the replacement part ; passenger side blend door actuator for a 2004 Cadillac Deville; where the hell do I find this very specific part ??
will this correct your heat too
will this work for heat also
I have the same problem with a 2003 Deville. What cutting tool did you use to cut the vent so nice and straight? Thanks!
I have the same develle & only my drver $ide work & ive replaced the regulator$ but the window$ $till wont re$pond what can be my problem
I have a SLS 2002 my Mode actuator went out. The center console comes down between the front seats. I think it’s a bit different but I’m not certain by any means. And advise, and thanks for the vid.
I have an 05 cts that im doing this to and i cant see whats behind the first actuator... Can anyone help me?
How did you know which actuator to change. I’m confused as to which one to change on mine
The one for this issue has the orange covered wires going to it.
What side of the dash
driver
Well done... good pics, great instructions. Thank you.
Do you know where I can get the Plastic fingers behind the actuator
I suppose i can pay attention when i tear mine out BUT would be good to know which two nubs share the same track
i can show you but it’s up to you on how i can send pics or video. i think 20 second video is the max on texting. i’d ask respectfully keep information private of course i would do the same. this is only if you haven’t done the project so far being 2 months ago.
@@SUBJECTISOLDMOVEON just found this i actually havent yet getting ready to do the cv axle (if it shows up tomorrow like it is supposed to) and prepping for a trans swap on the wifes suburban. as well as new u joints in the axle on my f 350...no shortage of fun around here lol.

also no rush i still dont have the part...
Do you happen to know where the rear one is my back seat blows hot air I think this is tje problem but the rear one any help with be much appricate thanks.
remove the glove box and kick panel, you will see a square actuator that is the one that is bad, it controls the rear. just changed mine last nite. 2 screws and a electrical connections.
Thanks for sharing
where is the mode actuator located, I can't find nothing saying where it is...what side.
If you are sitting in the driver seat it is under the dash where your right knee is at. Look under the dash against where the radio is at.
thx, I'll have a look when it warms up, not using it right now, -20c, suppose to go up to -9c Sunday...thx, will let you know, thanks for your help much appreciated.
@@NooBGarage Which panel has to be removed to get to it, though. Is it the "U" shaped one that surrounds the central radio unit, or is it
the long, horizontal kick panel that runs left to right above both knees / gas pedal / brake pedal, when seated?
I have an 02 DeVille DTS, is it safe to assume that I will need to remove the entire center console in order to do this on mine?
Is that the actuator for the heat above it?
In your still pics, where is this area located? Driver's side? Passenger side? I'm having trouble finding this area...
If you are sitting in the driver seat there are 2 actuators on the right/outter side of your right knee. On the left side of the radio. Just remove the driver side knee bolster panel and you will see both of them there. If you need more of a visual I can take some more pictures in the morning for you.
NooB Garage... I have a '02 Caddy DeVille and the left main blend door actuator stopped working. My question is the red arrow in your video the left main actuator? If so, do I just unscrew and disconnect the harness to change it out?
Hi Noob just came across your video I have a 2002 Seville was wondering if this will work for it as well? Please help
My AC only blow cold air out of the driver side vents and hot air on the passenger side. Can you help me?
James Weaver I have the same problem but the hot air is coming from driver's side. Please some help
The same problem happen to me today. Driver side blows cold and passenger side is very hot. I dont know what happen nor what it could be. Did anyone find the problem or did this video helped solve the problem? Thanks!
Nikki Washington Hi I had this problem there is a actuator behind the glove box you will need to unscrew the glove box to pull it out. Once the glove slides out you will see the actuator to the left. Replace that and you will get your passenger side to work again.

2000 Seville dhs...when I turn my heat on it only gets hot on passenger side and stays cold on driver side. What needs changed. Is it an actuator on driver side since the people in comments had the passenger side acting different than what you told it to do or is it still the actuator in glove box that needs changed
*Deville
Only my driver side will blow cold. Will this fix my problem as well?
Yes
This fix controls air direction (defrost or floor of dash vent) not temp.
Where kick panel located?
Right under the steering wheel right above the gas and brake pedal.
Where are the pics? Cant understand where to get the place from the vids it is notclear.
do I need da cam and bracket I'm only getting air from defrost and floor please help.
What year is your Caddy?
Some people are able to get the actuator off without removing the cam and bracket. You can reuse your old cam and bracket if the actuator pops off easy. But if you decide to switch the whole thing (cam, actuator, and bracket), I got mine from Amazon for $56.23. Part ACDelco 15-72654.
NooB Garage 02 DeVille base model
NooB Garage I fond it thanks alot will be replacing it soon
Hey great video teach
Not enough info on removing and replacing it. To much about just using just the activator
Replacing ignition key assembly cured all Ac and dash light problems. ( Sved repacing starter, too.
I have a 2000 Cadillac seville sts how do I fix my heat it blows out only cold air omg someone help me please
Change the thermostat
Ok cut the vent off got to the actuator, took the three screws out and I can't pop it off of the cam by prying. Any suggestions?
If you are sure you have all 3 screws removed there is nothing else holding it. May just need to pri it harder between the actuator and the gear. Try using a flat head screw driver.
When are you working on a Scout project? I'm asking for a friend.
rig job ! Most people won't want their caddy cut . The factory way is the best way .
Is this tutorial feasible for a 2004 Cadillac Deville? Thank you.
2000 to 2005 all the same
Dewayne Maiden Thanks much.
