That intro was very reminiscent of something that Trevor Boulder might’ve contributed on a Uriah Heep song. He is one of my heroes, and could get tasty really quick
The current fad for flashy UA-cam playing goes against everything I love about bass - supporting the song and letting the music shine as a whole is the real art of bass playing. Dan, your playing warms my heart and brings a tear to my eye. Congratulations on the subs and keep up the wonderful work you do.
Dan, I don’t know what your EQ secret is, but you’re the only bass player on UA-cam that I can hear through my iPhone speakers instead of having to put headphones on. Keep up the great work! Congrats on 100K subs!
Congratulations Dan on reaching that number of subscribers! Yours is the channel I most recommend to people who want to learn bass: you're a gifted teacher. I love the way that you develop simple ideas into more complex ones, while showing clearly how you do that.
Bro your lessons on UA-cam are too much 👏🏾👍🏾 to be your student is an honor, your explination, theory, scales and finger walkin, talkin is poetry in motion 👏🏾 😎 thanks a-mill for your bass drills Dan!!
Congrats on 100K! Well deserved and deeply appreciate what you do and how you do it. This lesson is a great example of your teaching/creative/playing genius. Thank you!
Dan ,congratulations on the‘milestone’ sir,,again very good video. You have touched on something that I too need to work on and your approach is so pragmatic, wow. And I love your candor,,,well done……..
As someone who's rather late to the game, having watched many lessons and tutorials over the past year, your's have been most helpful and digestible to me. Thank you for that.
I have no idea if you will ever see this comment, but man, I dig your videos....they have helped me quite a lot. Cheers from the mountains of North Carolina
So many things to learn Dan, I'm just going to follow your lead, it's kept me good so far 😎 I do enjoy watching the shows on technique, which is really helpful atm. Would love to see more of your take and analysis on the greats. Also, I thought your shows on gear were really interesting, like the mini series about your Ibanez. I think I binge watched all of them one night (not just the one on the Ibanez, all of them! 😬😆)
I love going back on some of Dan Hawkins videos and trying to work on these awesome lessons it makes a difference ❤Ty Dan Hawkins as always you are the best 💖
It's well deserved. Thanks for providing the backing tracks too. I really should practice more with your material. I feel I'm regressing, but I'm also busy learning double bass 😊
Not only are you an Amazing bass player, you’re an amazing teacher and giving gems like these to everyday people for free shows you have big heart and i’m sure i’m not the only one that appreciates it. Thank you for being so vulnerable in this video not only do we all go through this but seeing a role model speak on that perfectionist mindset is so real and relatable, but you are already one of the Greats we love you Dan! I’m getting your course this weekend 🙏🏾🎉!
Congrats Dan! and thank you from the bottom of my heart for the lessons you share. you are such a great teacher for this greenhorn trying to understand the low end. Cheers!
100k subscribers is amazing Dan well done!! And I'm not surprised, your videos are brilliant...so informative, interesting, fun and helps me and so many others!! I have learnt so much watching your videos thank you!! 👍🤗
Another great lesson. I’d recommend the beginner to bassist course to all - it’s really helped me improve my playing across a range of styles, and helped me with the practical application of music theory and rhythm. Looking forward to the next course that’s in the works.
Thank you for an awesome channel I have been watching and learning from you over a year. Your teaching is easy to understand and follow. Thanks to you I now understand the modes and incorporate them in my playing. Carol Kaye is my favorite player.
Congratulations Dan! Been subscribed since I bought my first bass about 18 months ago. It’s been great learning from you here, your books and seeing this channel grow.
Congrats Dan on your 100k subscribers achievement. Another great milestone of your channel. Your lessons have indeed helped me a lot on my personal bass journey. Drop me a note if you ever drop by KL. I'll buy you a drink 😊
I wish I could teach anything the way you do Mr Hawkins. I've spent a long time with other guitars, but I'm new to the bass. I try to practice every one of your lessons and I can see that I'm improving. Thank you very much.
You are such a great teacher, many things to learn in your videos with perfect rhythm and explanations. Thank you to be my guide on the bass player adventure and learning curve. …and congrats for the 100k !
Great advice, many thanks Dan for bringing up that factor. I’ve been listening to a particular bass player who is melodious and wondering how he came out with such playing. The bass player I’m talking about is of Alleycats (Malaysian pop band in 1970-80s)
I would love in general a video from you about health an bass playing. Meaning what do you do for preperation playing a lot especially standing without blowing a spinal disc...I mean already managed it this this year with a 6 string. Right now I am reading Randall Kertz. Maybe there are some pro tipss you can give from experience and when to take break. Other than that I must say I enjoy your lessons far more than the SBL content, since you are able in my case to connect the dots, or point out what I was doing intuitive like. Without gym and blackrolling as well as manual therapy I would still rely heavily on to pain killers. Thank you for this channel and hopefully this year you find more time to play. Your playing is till very tasteful and the ray sound s superb
Thanks very much for the kind words. Other than using light amps/cabs (MarkBass), and having a wide strap (I like the Comfort strap), and doing some weight training to keep muscle tone, plus working on posture (not nearly as much as I should!!), I probably don’t have more to say than Randall Kertz - his book looks really good.
how did you know that in the Cm/Gm/Bb/F progression Bb is the key? I thought it's the last chord (a note, tb fair) that suggests the key. In other words, how would I find where the I-chord is? Thank you.
I would recommend learning how a major scale is harmonised. Bb Major: Bb Cm Dm Eb F Gm Adim. Then you can see how the chords relate to the overall key. It’s usually the first chord that tells you the key but not always!
Thanks! Pretty simple. Bass up, treble down on the bass, old strings, straight into Logic via an Avalon U5. No compression or EQ. I have a couple of signal chain/recording videos on my channel.
That intro was very reminiscent of something that Trevor Boulder might’ve contributed on a Uriah Heep song.

Dan, your playing warms my heart and brings a tear to my eye. Congratulations on the subs and keep up the wonderful work you do.
Thanks very much. I think we both like a similar kind of bass playing! (I do like the flashy stuff too though).
Greatest bass teacher on the net! It is amazing how much you help us.
Here in Spain, MUCHAS GRACIAS❤

The backing track reminds me of Hotel California. Thanks 👍
There's no question that your videos have made me a better player, thanks for all you do and I wish you continued success!
Happy to hear that!
Dan, I don’t know what your EQ secret is, but you’re the only bass player on UA-cam that I can hear through my iPhone speakers instead of having to put headphones on. Keep up the great work! Congrats on 100K subs!
I don’t know the secret either other than turn the bass itself up loads! 😂 🙏🙏
I see you reached the milestone.Congrats!I have been playing for almost half a century but I've learned so much from you and thanks for that!

I like how you break down your lines, your thinking about note choice, with some theory mixed in and diagrams. It makes this stuff easier to grasp.
Thanks, Matt. 👍🙏

Thanks. Not too late to the game at all! I regularly receive emails from guys in their 70s and even 80s getting back into bass…

thanks for what you do…

Great video Dan
Great ❤!
congrats great stuff, how about writing or explain writing walking bass lines. again Congrats on the milestone.
Will do! Do search the channel as I already have a couple.
Where do I get the program to play the background music with that?
The backing track is available on my website and the link is in the description if you scroll down a bit.
Help us with the link to the bass line for this progression.
It’s in the description. 🙏👍
Congratulations Dan on reaching that number of subscribers! Did you use some chorus in that excercise?
Thanks! Yes I did. I blended a clean signal with Waves CLA Bass plugin.
Congrats on 100K!
And an amazing lesson as always!
Just for curiosity, what is your usual pots setting on this Stingray?
Thanks, Luigi! Lately it’s treble down almost all the way and bass up almost all the way.
Hi Dan. Can I ask what your signal path is with the Sting Ray? Thanks.
Hi Lenny. I made a video on it a while back: ua-cam.com/video/70FYURah5nU/v-deo.htmlsi=6jGPwqkhG1KSYTn5
Congrats! Can I ask what strings on the Stingray?
Thanks! Quite worn in Elites Players 45-105.

Hello Dan. I know the pentatonic scales on guitar, so is guitar knowlege transferrable to the bass?
Many of the shapes are, yes, since both instruments share EADG strings tuned in 4ths.
Great tone. What’s your set up?
Thanks! Pretty simple. Bass up, treble down on the bass, old strings, straight into Logic via an Avalon U5. No compression or EQ. I have a couple of signal chain/recording videos on my channel.
How do you get the tone, just made a FB post and most UA-cam educators have all these tricks in their tones, please tell me you don’t do this
What tricks?? I’d love to know! I just plug my bass in and play. Different basses have different strings/setups but I don’t use EQ or compression.
