    Pro Tip (I fly drones): when you're flying back, depending on the wind conditions as you are nearing the end of the battery life go to the maximum height that you are allowed to fly and definitely be flying in sport mode. You can override battery alarms and in sport mode you'll get the maximum speed. It will start to automatically land but as long as you are at maximum height, you can fly another good distance as it slowly descends.
    The joys of DJI :)

    • @travisminneapolis
      @travisminneapolis Рік тому +55

      Aside from sport mode, flying near the ground or way up in the air can help you mitigate against wind. You can see if you're flying faster or slower high or down by the ground.
      I think many drone pilots have ran into situations like this, at least once in their learning journey
      I first ran into this when I was in the other side of a giant lake and while I had more than 50% battery I realized that there was a strong headwind and barely made it back.
      I found that there was a lot less wind down by the water, but it will try to automatically land at a certain point. So it's really helpful to fly up to maximum allowed height before it starts to auto land. This will give you some additional runway

    • @tudoroprea2855
      @tudoroprea2855 Рік тому +35

      rip the battery. I had mine die on me 200m in the air becasue a blizzard caught me 2k away while filming a mountian and the bottom sensors got covered and the drone refused to desend as it thought it was near the ground. Would not desend faster than landing speed. Luckly I managed to position it over a large snow bank which it fell softly into. Drone was fine. Battery died though. (DJI Air 2s)

    • @josephhacker6508
      @josephhacker6508 Рік тому +60

      That seems like a horrendous idea. Flying in sport mode and gaining altitude uses far more battery then just cruising along. The drone will initiate an auto land a lot sooner then if you flew it normally.

    • @andrewniedziela
      @andrewniedziela Рік тому +15

      @@josephhacker6508 I would agree. Sport mode in highly inefficient.

    • @travisminneapolis
      @travisminneapolis Рік тому +15

      @@josephhacker6508 That hasn't been my experience. Particularly for the use case I shared and have personally experienced where DJI software forces you to land.
      I would rather it force land at me on land with a 1% battery than auto land into the water at 8%.
      Again, it's not about efficiency in this situation, it's about gaining the additional horizontal distance that you get as it auto-lands but you can keep moving horizontally (ie getting closer to land) than if you were flying along 10ft above the water.
      at 30mph, if it forces a landing due to low battery, and you're at 399ft up, we're talking a good 500-1000ft of distance.
      Just speaking from my own experiences with a DJI Phantom and Mavic.

    I think, you could see the wind direction out there on the smoke of the ship. It was blowing away from you, if I see it right...

    infact, there are few way to prevent if really not enought time to come back. (1.spotmode. while it return home, push max speed forward and higher it, so when it landing, buy you a curve line giving sometimes forwarding. but not applicable for windy place. 2.if is windy place. closer to the ground is better, make it used lesses battery to return home. 3.manufacturer could have a tiny airpump to make a baloon pump. can activate it if really no choice. not to worry adding it will heavier the weight. it is very tiny like highschool project every final year. well~if you wanted to tight empty bottle below it before take off also can. 4.manufacturer could have waterprove spray for all electronic part inside. like some of the digital door circuit board to prevent weather and rain damage.) BUT, if giving you all those function, they won't be able to sale you the next drone. included camera using managetic connected function instead of wire so you can upgrade the camera without buyig new one everytime. same logic how Apple Magickeyboard connect it's ipad.

    I'm not a drone pilot but I do have some understanding of aerodynamics. If you need to stretch battery life over distance it's better to go at low speeds since you use significantly less battery than at high speeds. This is because the higher velocity of an object through a liquid (air is a liquid) there is not only more force required but the force is actually squared. This is why if you move your hand through water at high speeds it uses a significant amount of energy but slow speed down only to probably half of that and it's almost effortless.
    This pilot may have used this technique but if he didn't, he could have probably made it to land if he had

      Hey Pilot and flight instructor here (fixed wing though). While what you are saying is mostly correct, flying at lower speeds wont always increase range. Its a bit technical but you are welcome to read up on it (or message me if able). It is due to the drag curve. There is a speed at which the aircraft is most efficient. When headding into wind, its actualy better to speed up a little (from that most efficient point) as that will give you more range

      @@deonfourie2828 oh yes I think that actually makes sense. If you maintain the drone's "most efficient" speed into a head wind, the wind will counteract that effective range.

    I did this exact same thing last year!!!!!! I was on the Ningaloo coast in Western Australia and tried to fly my drone out to a whale spotting boat offshore. Got it out about 1700m then realised I might not make it back. Then I made the mistake of trying to fly it back in sports mode instead of using the return to home feature. That drone ended up in the water less than a 100 metres off shore. I went snorkelling that arvo to find it so we got it back but it was beyond repair.

    You shouldn't have made that distance in the first place. People like you are the reason we get more and more harsher drone laws

    Nice emergency landing ! By the way, what did you put on the drone ? How did you manage to do this arcobatic shots with a Mavic ?

    Unbelievably, I once lost control of my drone over the ocean due to strong winds. Taking advantage of a lull, I lowered it close to the water and steered it back to shore, capturing sea lions swimming on the journey back.

    What really limits these drones is the Shawty battery life, these batteries lasted at least an hour, then you could actually take advantage of the satellite distance you can travel.

    You can turn off the auto landing (there is a setting in the DJI Go app) in these situations, also switch to sport mode, even tho it drains faster you will get more meters per % of battery.
    If you disable auto land you don’t need to fly high, slowly descending will allow you to get more of the drones energy into forward speed, most importantly don’t suddenly stop descending or change direction, all accelerations will take a lot of energy and might cause you to drop the battery to shutoff voltage.

    Once at Tenerife I flew in to NFZ over sea and drone started landing in to water but I was able to flew back and crash it in to rocks so at least I recover SD card with unsaved files. Video clip from Tenerife is on my channel.
