We were fortunate to catch this episode just before we visited Malaga ( last week). We contacted The Food Experience and they replied right away, asking us our preferences, etc... Imagine our pleasure when it was Hanni herself who greeted us and it was just my husband and I on this bespoke tour. Hanni led us on a wonderful 'food experience'. She was fun, informative and so easy to be around. As I sit here back at home, sipping my sweet vermouth and planning making my tinto verano , we are sure we had one of our BEST food tours in all of our travels... (but we have booked a Devour tour in Barcelona...)
Hi James. After watching your video about Malaga, I contacted Hanni. My reason: I am considering to move to Malaga next year and start living as a real pensionado. So: sleep, terrace, market, beach, bar, restaurant and back to bed again:) Hanni was very kind and she introduced me to Jessica. We just finished our introduction Zoom and all went very well. Jessica can be of great assistance from the moment I land in Malaga to search for my new home. Thank you very much.
WOW! This made me fall in love with Spain, Malaga, Spanish Food and the incredible Hanni Martini all over again! It looked like you both had so much fun and can't wait to book a food tour and visit some of these places.
Thank you James and Hanni for sharing this fantastic video with us. I particularly enjoyed your visit to the Mercado. I always visit the local markets when I visit Spanish cities.
First time hearing of Malaga. Hanna really knows the best places, and it looked like you really enjoyed the experience. Really enjoyed the tour, and Thank you for taking us along.
I love watching your channel. I went to Spain for the first time last month and watched your Madrid videos in preparation. My uncle lives in Malaga, and I spent about 4 days there wandering around, a lot of it on my own. Hiking up to the Alcazaba and checking out the Picasso museum. It was Holy Week so every night there were large processions and tons of people around. It was such a beautiful and amazing city. I wish this video had been out before I went. I would have loved to have stopped by some of these places. I am pretty sure I stumbled on the Mercado de Atarazanas at closing time. IT’s so great to see you highlight this amazing city.
Thank you for showing the delicious and diverse Spanish gastronomy, the great unknown abroad. It has always amazed me to see foreigners filling fast food, Italian and Oriental restaurants and missing out on the delicacies of the country they are visiting. When I travel, I avoid eating what I already know and imbued me with its gastronomy.. This is curious being one of the countries with the award-winning Chefs worldwide. Thanks.
What a fantastic video! You're back James, it's official, like a video of old pre all this Covid roller coaster we've been on. Thanks for letting us escape for 20 minutes! Best wishes, Mark in Ireland.
I studied in Malaga 30 years ago and stayed in Pedregalejo and the city centre for seven months in total before it became too hot and I drove to Sweden to cool off! -- it's good to see that plenty of my old haunts are still going strong. If you are still there, I would recommend trying a tapa of snails in tomato sauce... it's very different to the French style which is cooked with butter and garlic (and much better in my not so humble opinion)... they used to serve it in one of the many bars between Pedregalejo and El Palo.
Eating is one of the best experiences I have when I travel. The food is one of my indicators as to what places I can live in or want to stay a bit longer. The views are great, weather and people, but the food is a big draw for me.
I love Spain. Malaga and Cadiz were founded by the Phoenicians. Makes it the oldest city in W. Europe founded 770 BC. Cadiz founded by Phoenician sailors from Tyre in 1100 BC.
What an amazing and wonderful video, congratulations Hanni and James!! Well done, great tapas places options, well explained, can’t wait for the next video!! ⭐️😍
Great! Thank you James for the video! It’s great opportunity for me & my family as we’ll be visiting Spain this summer😊. And since my last visit to Malaga was extraordinarily, I decided to come and visit it again this summer (July) so stay tuned for sharing my upcoming experience with you and your friends !
Wish that I'd seen this video before our last trip to Spain pre pandemic in 2018. Loved Malaga but did not realize that they had such a vibrant food scene as some of the other places we had visited (Sevilla, Granada, etc). Thanks for a wonderful walk down memory lane. Hope to get back travelling once things settle down.
Malaga is a great and vibrant city. Twenty years ago it looked a lot more run down but there's been no end of improvement and investment since then. Like all great cities that attract tourists there's good and bad places to eat. My favourite street food in Malaga are the delicious fried almonds. I've been to most of the places in this video and they are a lot of fun. However, they are a bit on the trendy side. Some of that stuff looked good but I know it's expensive and not particularly representative. It's a pity you didn't have espetos because that is the quintessential Malaga seafood at affordable prices. All other fish is expensive when you eat out. Malaga wine is always cheap though but some of the stuff sold in that style isn't always the best quality. As always, if you want good quality food at justifiable prices, you have to move beyond the tourist centre or know your way around. Big shout out to Lo Gueno, just off Larios, which do good meals, great tapas and sherry. Another old reliable is the venerable Bar Malaga at the top of Larios. They do traditional stuff very well and are good value.
Nope! I want my lemon on fish because it enhances the true flavor. Got to have it and you aren't going to convince me otherwise. I used to live 5 minutes from that market. There was an amazing hole in the walk restaurant called Casa de Pedro right across the street. It was amazing. I love that market. What a great place to live. I was in my early 20's and that was a few decades ago! Great video that brings me back!
@@tessasweet5792 Absolutely! It brings a clean and fresh flavor to the fish. Actually, it just enhances the natural flavor without masking it. Vivan los limones!

James, we enjoyed the Altos Ibéricos Rioja 2016 that we got from your last wine tasting video. I would love to see you and Yoli do another wine tasting so I can support your cause until I can get to Spain and take one of your tours!
Hola James! We loved living in Malaga in 2017. So happy you were able to do a video there. We are going back in the fall! Love it! Thanks for all the new tapas bar places!
Coming to Malaga this November for the first time ever to do Costa and your vids are helping massively for a couple of pro foodies cheers Ian & Sue (Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK)
We were in Malaga three years ago and we never saw these places. We did go to the Market you showed. We used to get fresh juices there in the morning. We ate at two of the restaurants and bought some fresh fruit.
Hi James. I am a Spaniard living in Australia and I love your channel and recommend it to everyone who is interested in Spain, but please! No-one in Spain eats fish for breakfast (or meat for that matter). Breakfast in Spain is the continental light kind, like what Yoli always has: sweet muffins (madalenas), some other pastry or tostadas con mantequilla and/or mermelada (toast with butter and/or jam). Maybe churros con chocolate on weekends, but that's it! Pescaito frito for breakfast is super-guiri! 🤣
I wouldn't mind eating all those fishes, especially boquerones for breakfast, since I do not eat any sweets for breakfast. Plus it's a healthier choice
James hi. I work as a tour guide in Prague and I just have to say that I loved this video. You and Hanni have been an inspiration. Hanni’s knowledge of the Malaga gastronomy, her passion for food and vibe combined with your upbeat energy have been a sensation. Thank you for sharing this with us😊
Execellent video. I've just been to Malaga and had amazing wine and tapas in all sorts of places. I didn't try any of these places and now feel that I must return immediately!
So pleased you made this video. Next time I visit Malaga I will visit some of these authentic Spanish tapas eateries. I love Spanish cuisine and the simplicity combined with quality. Nothing fake or contrived. I can't wait till you do tapas bar tour of Sevilla too? 🙏😁
I live on the Costa del Sol just outside Malaga and love it here. Your video is great. I admit I don't know Malaga city that well yet. You inspired me to visit it more often. I love good food, good wine and good beer. However, I struggle here in Spain because I am a vegetarian and there are simply very few options as the traditional Spanish cuisine consists mostly of meat or fish. I prefer Greek cuisine much more - you can have a great dinner or mezze in Greece in most restaurants, but you really have to look hard to find a place in Spain that offers more than a salad for vegetarians. That's one of the reasons why we don't eat out as much here as we used to when we lived in England, which is a shame.
Málaga was a bomb site when I first passed through it en route to Nerja, must've been about 13/14 yrs ago. Then, and for a few succeeding years, it wasn't more than a transfer hub for other holiday destinations for me. Now... at the very least, an overnight visit. Incredible transformation. Super chilled city, and one of the friendliest I've ever visited.
I would love to see this clip a year ago. I have been to Malaga twice and only visited multiple times at Casa Lola and El Pimpi. They were suggested by my hotel's front desk.
Perfect. Thank you, James and Hanni, for this fantastic video. Made notes on everything for our Christmas in Malaga trip next week. So excited. Merry Christmas 🎅
We ate at Casa Antonio when we were in Malaga. It was the best meal I had in all of the places we went to throughout Andalucia! Highly recommend as well!
This is awesome. Thank you for the tips. I'll be in Andalusia ,right near Ronda, for two weeks starting June 12. This video came at the perfect time even if you say it's out of the blue.
Thank you James!!!!! We LOVE your channel and they have completely guided our adventures thus far in Malaga! I have my list ready for Lisbon and Madrid (totally based on your super recommendations!) Can’t wait and thanks you so much!!!! ❤️
Really good insight, been to half the places but some lovely new ones for when we are back in summer. Our fav is La Tranca, amazing food but its the staff and atmosphere that really make it. A very special place.
We love your videos! We are in Malaga for 5 days and are trying some of your recommendations. We are at El Pimpo now (wonderful!). We tried to go to Meson Antonio but they were reservation only today (Saturday) so we will try them on a weekday. We will absolutely try your Valencia recommendations recommendations next week. Yuhuuuuuuuu! Didn’t they do well! Sterling effort all round - and really Hanni & James only scratched the surface of Malaga’s phenomenal food scene. Next time we will get you off the beaten track, James, where there are even more gems to be discovered 👌
I absolutely loved this video, so funny James (maybe slightly tipsy 🥴). I live in La Cala de Mijas so will definitely be going to some of those places the next time I’m in Malaga!
I visit about 3 times a year.. stay at the Hotel Ataranzanas.. right opposite the market... do room only and eat breakfast in the sun outside the market.. bliss. 👍🏴
Love the video with a lot of information to take in and explore. One recommendation note the name of places or restaurants you tried because most are not very easy to get even replaying video. Again excellent video and informative! 👍🏻Thank you! PS moved here earlier this year and still exploring all the places! 😂👍🏻
James, family is most important (sending love to them) BUT how I missed a good ol' little tipsy tapas crawl!!! :)) Thanks for bringing back memories of Malaga, desperately want to return sometime
I'll be heading over to Malaga for a few weeks in late May to early June (2024) - hoping to stop at many of the places you mentioned in this video, as well as the one you did in Pedregalejo. Looks like a great place to stay. The last time I was in Spain we only did a day trip to Malaga (from Madrid) so definitely not enough time to see this beautiful city.
This really reminds me of my vacation to with my sister. It really makes me miss Spain so much. I want to take another trip back there. I have not been to Malaga.
Just watched this again in advance of our return trip to Malaga in the fall of 2023. Flights booked and hoping for better weather then what we had in the spring earlier this year.
I have been to Malaga several times with friends who live in Spain. We always end up going to the same restaurants. I have been to a couple you featured. I can see there are tonnes more places if you are prepared to hunt them down. The market is just mind boggling. Puts British markets to shame. I always buy the big garlics. The last time I visited (and unfortunately probably my last) British pubs, bars and budget hotels had opened up allowing a different kind of culture which is spoiling the Malaga traditions. Thanks for sharing.
I hated this video … … because now, I have to change my whole travel plan !!! We were landing in Malaga then heading straight to Granada. Now, thanks to this perfect video of bar hoping from great places to even nicer ones, I have to change my plans and spend a few days to track James’ steps (yes, few hours for James translate in a few days for me…). Seriously… well done. Great host. Love the history and the stories for each places…
@@spainrevealed you have no idea how you messed up our plans… … we were initially planning to go to Italy 😅😅😅 Then came hour videos. The passion with which you explain the history, and the positive side of Yoly made Spain our first post covid destination. Now please don’t go to Valencia because you’ll really f up our plans 😂 Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba and almost a full week in Madrid. Might see you in a bar. Salud!
Just back from Malaga where my pals surprised me , on my birthday , with a food tour. I was even more surprised when it turned out to be the one led by Hanni (who I had seen on this video and been impressed by.) She did a fantastic tour, took us to great bars and was great company. Her knowledge of the local scene led us to some food places we would never have found by ourselves and she made sure we experienced local delicacies. Watch this video. She is the real deal. Fun , informative and extremely helpful. After the tour she gave us a list of places we didn't have time to visit and this became our guide for the rest of the weekend. Hanni even told us to WhatsApp her if we needed any further info. She was brilliant. The food was sensational. The drinks superb. Malaga is a beautiful , vibrant town. This tour helped us pack as much as possible into the three nights we spent there.
Looks great. I love Almeria and been a few times since I filmed Game of Thrones there, but would love to see Malaga too. Just rent a car from Barcalona and drive to Cadiz, stopping in each town. Would also be a good video from you (if you need an assistant, let me know haha) Im off to Bilbao in two weeks and found your videos while looking at another channel about Bilbao. Wish you had one about Bilbao before I went, but your San Sebastan ones helped me know what food and drink to try. Can't wait for the cider!

Dear James, the lemon has nothing to do with the freshness of the fish, but with breaking the fried fat, it's "pe'caíto frito", mi arma🤗❤️

Okay Hanni is a vibe! Would love to have her as a drinking and eating partner!
Hahahahahah thank you! Hit me up when you’re in Malaga! 👌🥂
Que gran vídeo, felicidades!!
Gracias!
Great vid! I will be there for a few days in March and looking forward to my stay
Excellent video! I'll prepare for dinner anchovies with a glass of white wine! Thanks!😊🥂
I hated this video …
… because now, I have to change my whole travel plan !!!
Haha sorry for messing up your plans!!! 😎😎😂
@@spainrevealed you have no idea how you messed up our plans…
… we were initially planning to go to Italy 😅😅😅
Then came hour videos. The passion with which you explain the history, and the positive side of Yoly made Spain our first post covid destination.
Now please don’t go to Valencia because you’ll really f up our plans 😂
Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba and almost a full week in Madrid. Might see you in a bar. Salud!
Hahah sorry we messed up your plans but DELIGHTED you’re changing your itinerary to take in our fab city 😁
How wonderful that you had this experience! Thank you for sharing :)
Looks great. I love Almeria and been a few times since I filmed Game of Thrones there, but would love to see Malaga too. Just rent a car from Barcalona and drive to Cadiz, stopping in each town. Would also be a good video from you (if you need an assistant, let me know haha)
Im off to Bilbao in two weeks and found your videos while looking at another channel about Bilbao. Wish you had one about Bilbao before I went, but your San Sebastan ones helped me know what food and drink to try. Can't wait for the cider!
You really can’t go far wrong in Bilbao 😉 Enjoy!
Love Malaga , one of my favourite Tapas was La Recova
Enjoyed your, video. Entertaining, educational, & fun
New subscriber here. Originally from the Philippines now living in Seattle. Spain is in my bucket list next country to visit. Your channel is quite informative and makes my decision to visit Spain easier. Well done.
Well, I was going going to go to Cádiz next but I might have to make Malaga my next trip after watching this video! 😅
haha, sorry to fill up your itinerary!
