GROUNDHOG DAY - WTF Happened to This Movie?

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts, or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
Of course, this week's movie is one of the HUGE HITS we're talking about, with Groundhog Day being a top-tier classic in Bill Murray's filmography. Brilliantly directed by the late Harold Ramis, this is a movie that's spawned many imitators (including the recent Palm Springs) but, in the minds of many, will never truly be equaled.

#WTFHappenedToThisMovie #BillMurray #GroundhogDay
Makes me happy to know that Murray and Ramis reconciled in the end.
They did make a perfect movie together.
My favorite fact about this is that they shot it in reverse chronological order so that Phil would be happy at the end and angry at the beginning. Good use of Bill Murray's temperament.
This is one of my favourite movies.
The evolving scenes between Phil and the old man begging always get me, each time I watch this.
Wonderful film.
Amazing that it turned out so well in spite of everything. One of my all time favorite movies. I think it is perfect!
Some of the best movies of all time have contentious filming experiences. While theres movies with harmonious filming experinces that were huge letdowns.
One of my absolute Favorite movies; a story of redemption and renewal.
One of the best movies ever
Yep
Agree
Yes it is
Of course
Agreed 👍
It's because of this movie is why we, as a society, use the term "Groundhog Day" in jest when referring to the same ol' same ol'. Brilliant!
Movies influence things like these a lot. For example, the term "bucket list" comes from the Morgan freeman movie "The Bucket list". The phrase didn't exist before then! The same with "jump the shark".
Also Bunny Boiler from Fatal Attraction
Absolutely one of my top 10 movies. I've seen it at least 12 times. I never tire of it.
I like how the director and writer "managed" the studio interference instead of allowing the studio to take control.
No matter how mean Bill might be behind the camera, I just can't ever have enough of him
He's been in almost all my favorite movies and will always be in my mind.
Favorite line - YES BUT MY FATHER WAS A PIANO MOVER! As a piano tuner/technician for over 45 years that line cracks me up so much!
This is possibly my favorite film of all time, I grew up watching it with my brother trying to figure out how friggin long he was in the time loop.
There are a few videos on UA-cam on the time loop. Pretty interesting!
According to Violet Ramis Stiel’s extremely personal memoir/biography "Ghostbuster’s Daughter: Life With My Dad, Harold Ramis," Just before Ramis died, Murray showed up unannounced at his old friend’s house at 7 a.m. with a box of doughnuts and a police escort. Ramis had pretty much lost his ability to speak by that point, so Murray did most of the talking. They didn’t rehash the events from the set of Groundhog Day, choosing instead to hang out for a couple of hours, laugh, and make amends.
Why the police escort??
@@SkywalkerSamadhi I don't know, you'll have to ask him. I think it may be a star's pulling power to enable these things. It may have had something to do with Ramis having lost his temper and grabbing Murray by the throat when they fell out on set. I think it was meant in jest, I don't think he thought there was ever a genuine threat. I grandiose gesture, perhaps reminiscent of when the Ghostbusters arrive with a police escort. A personal in-joke Maybe.
@@chinchillaka the first thing I thought of was as a joke. Bill Murray is well known for being extremely low key. No assistants or agents. He just has an old fashioned answering machine set up for people to get a hold of him to hire him. And I know they got Ina huge fight on Groundhogs Day. So probably a joke.
I live in Jacksonville about 20-30 minutes away from the Golf Club restaurant he and his brothers set up in St. Augustine. And there are all kinds of stories from people around there and here of Bill showing up at a 7-11 at 2am to buy coffee or him eating somewhere by himself alone and just a normal dude. So I can't really see him pulling a movie star big D energy move and using a cop.
@@SkywalkerSamadhi Apparently Murray didn't know where Ramis lived, he only knew the area where he lived. So Murray turned up at the local police station and asked where he lived. Obviously the police officers recognised Murray and they agreed to show him. They literally drove him to Ramis's front door. It's also documented in Ramis's daughters book.
That's really sweet. that's something a true friend does. As they say...True Hate can only Happen with someone you Love
How depressing that it caused a rift between Ramis and Murray
Yeah. But at least they came around.
It’s weird how film and music are that way. Big talent means big egos and when you’re talking about a multi faceted production it’s bound to cause a strain but this rift likely started a long time before this film.
@@pca1987 Came around as in Murray arrived at Ramis' deathbed and made amends. Better late than never.
@@JerBuster77 Yeah.
Murray has been a stoner for most of his adult
life.
9:22 “Biting Murray not once, not twice, but thrice!”
Nice deep cut Mr. Burns reference. I see what you did there.
WTF happened to Groundhog Day?
It became an all-time classic.
Thank you and good night.
My wife and I went to Punxsutawney this past Groundhog Day. It was a lot of fun!
In 2014, Bill Murray honored Ramis at the Oscars. Amy Adams and Murray were announcing the Best Cinematography Oscar and Murray said: "Oh, and we forgot one. Harold Ramis for Caddyshack, Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day".
1993 isn't the worst year to be in a loop. Well, I'd be five forever.
Anyone else love that Stargate episode btw?
I was 13 so my one day loop probably would have been worse than the movie
@@honkytonkinson9787 How so? You could get to know girls and fail and fail again without the consequences until you've figured them out if at all possible;-)
As a father of a teenager, hanging out with teenage girls in an endless loop doesn't sound fun
@@honkytonkinson9787 Of course from an adult's perspective it wouldn't (and shouldn't)
I was four, and can not remember much about that year. But my mother told me I cried watching Free Willy, so maybe it would not be good to repeat that.
Brilliant account! Thanks a ton! This is one of my favourite films too!
It is my childhood favorite movie, whenever I feel that my life is so boring and monotonous, I am watching it 😂It is a perfect therapy for me to change of my life. 👌🏻
I grew up in Pennsylvania and I think that Groundhog Day perfectly captures what it’s like to live there. I always knew that Groundhog Day wasn’t “actually” filmed in Punxsutawney but I was blown away when I learned that “none” of it was even filmed in a Pennsylvania!
It’s sad that this was the end of Harold Ramis and Bill Murray’s friendship.
"According to Violet Ramis Stiel’s extremely personal memoir/biography "Ghostbuster’s Daughter: Life With My Dad, Harold Ramis," Just before Ramis died, Murray showed up unannounced at his old friend’s house at 7 a.m. with a box of doughnuts and a police escort. There are happy endings, my friend.
@@smurfystef .
Why?
Just actors. They don't even greet you at Walmart 😐
One of the best movies ever made. A master piece.
Back when character development was a thing
When life imitates art: here in 2020, we are living Groundhog day - with masks.
@hellrzr1966 so you live in a country that doesn’t care about the effect of people’s actions on others
@@frejafan He's just a selfish bastard who can't wear a mask for 5 minutes when going into a store because he would rather risk other peoples health than be slightly inconvenienced.
@@bonnienadinenewman Good for you! I’ve been a minimalist, but wish it were an empty house, as it were.
Gobbler’s Knob is a GREAT name.
Gobblers Knob is your sisters nickname. Just kidding, sorry I couldn't resist.
It is on my list of favourite movies. Among the others are Shawshank Redemption and Schindler's List.
Classic. If I had Top 10 it would be there.
It's on the Classic Movies Channel now, 24/7. It just keeps playing, over and over.
Well done. Thanks for diving deep into my favorite movie. I recently went to Woodstock and came home through Punxsutawney. I stayed at the B&B Phil Connors does. I’ll get a video done eventually, but this was very timely and awesome!
0:29 "...in the middle of a divorce..."
Must be a completely different version of this movie, to the one I know...
Ah, OK. Personal life...
But, without question, one of my all-time favourite movies.
Was thinking the same thing at first lol
@@aaronexplicable2111 Also, Pennsylvania is not the Midwest.
Said the same thing.
This is my best, favourite Bill Murray movie....😘
Each time they play Bill Murray's movies on HBO, I watch them all no matter how many times I have watched already.
It's wild how much Punxsutawney looks like Marietta Square where I lived near for 20 years outside Atlanta GA.
I was lucky enough to see it when it was released in theaters back in the day, and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. The only bad thing about this film is something that doesn't have to do with the film itself, which was the falling out between Ramis and Murray; some people may argue that because of this we didn't end up getting a 3rd Ghostbusters film with the original cast, but even as sad as that is, I wouldn't prefer that film having existed over Groundhog Day.
No, the reason we didn't get a Ghostbusters 3 is all because of Murray. They had a hard time getting him to do 2. Frankly, people have a hard time getting Murray to do anything. Amazing talent. But stubborn and odd.
I only watched Groundhog Day once, but I keep remembering it over and over.
I love Bill Murray in this movie, but I think Michael Keaton would have been a great choice as well.
I agree, I think he would gave brought something different to the role but not necessarily a bad different. From Batman to Beetlejuice to Mr Mom he has more then proven that he can get the job done in very different roles.
He was in a movie with andie mcdowel named multiplicity was pretty good now its like a prophecy and hollywood likes to impliment predictive programming to infiltrate and desensitive america
I don't think so.. Bill Murray's comedic delivery and charm made the movie.
The movie could have helped Chevy Chase...
@JD Ronin Technically, 4 Oscars.
I always wondered, having seen a number of time-loop concepts (TV shows, video games, movies, etc.) referring to Groundhog Day, what did they refer to this concept as before?
This movie , "Kingpin", "Greedy" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels " are beyond legendary! The Holy 4 Some!
yup.
Kingpin is an underrated gem of comedic brilliance .
I worked in a Chicago area hotel in the early 2000s where Ramis and his family sometimes showed up. Everyone who dealt with him said what a wonderful and gracious man he was. This was coming from folks who preferred to talk trash about everyone known customer that walked through the door.
This has always stuck with me.
That and Ghostbusters.
Can a man change himself given enough time? With that question, I've just realised the Good Place is Ground hog day
I had the same thought when I heard that bit haha
Don't drive angry!
Got to give credit to a debutant screenwriter for coming with something original in Hollywood. Comedians being difficult is something pretty tough to come to terms too but there are many examples.
Well done. Several YT reviews go all in on the philosophy of it all, as if Rubin &/or Ramis was a Zen master; this shows the synthesis AND the process's final gong, the dissolution of a long-standing relationship. It's one thing to act together, but direction added a burden, proving a breaker.
Masterpiece film, it's what going to the movies are all about!
Ghostbusters eat your heart out, Groundhog Day is where it's at.
On my last deployment with the Navy, as we were on our way back home, our ship passed through the International Date Line on our way back to Hawaii. So basically we relived the same day over again and all day the ship showed Groundhog's Day over and over.
One of the greatest and funniest movies ever made.
Midwest weather? Doesn't this take place in Pennsylvania?
It was the Piano Instructor who was controlling the loop. You'll notice she is the first person Phil sees walking towards town as he leaves the house each morning, if he's on schedule. She was the only one who was also aware of the repetition of time. In her final scenes she brags to Rita that Phil "is my student." But why would Phil, who at this point is having very busy days and has by now become an accomplished piano player, be wasting valuable time taking additional and needless piano lessons? Well, he wouldn't, which means the Piano Instructor is referring to PREVIOUS days when he WAS taking lessons, that no one else is aware of. Her reference to Phil as her student probably goes deeper than merely referring to his piano lessons, and her look at Phil and Rita as they dance is also revealing of a more meaningful purpose.
I think her name is Neo in the script.
So I love this movie and all.. but there is one thing that always bugged the hell out of me.
When Phil plays the piano for everyone and he is super awesome at it, the teacher is up there in the front all proud of him and takes credit for being his teacher. But that day he wouldn't of needed a teacher cause he was already good.. so she should have no knowledge of teaching him. She shouldn't even really know who he is. He's just a weather guy who came in the day before with a camera crew as fast as she is concerned.
Even if she taught him once he would of been amazing so why is she proud of him? The only way that works is if he was bad at one point and then became good.
No no no. Remember when he goes in for lessons from her and she says “wow you’re good, and you’ve had no lessons?” So on that last day (being the new kinder Phil that he is) he would have gone in for a lesson acting like he didn’t know how to play and let her teach him so she would get the credit and feel like she really taught him something (because she did).
@@ckotcher1 okay. I see that. But why would she be proud? If somebody's coming to you that you just met that day, and said that he needs lessons, but he's already playing at that incredible level.. You wouldn't feel like you taught him anything. The only reason to be proud is because they go from terrible to good. once you get to a halfway decent level, one lesson is not going to change anything. There's a point in learning an instrument where you go from passing the beginner phase and you're learning chords and stuff to when you're pretty good but you still need to practice to get really good. You don't really need a teacher then you just need practice. That takes years sometimes. So even if he was trapped in that loop for 80 years or whatever, he wouldn't need to go on that particular day to get the lessons. Even if he did just to be nice, he would be so good she would have questioned why he was even there.
Skywalker Shadai because he would have walked in there that day ACTING like he couldn’t play and letting her think she taught him...because she did teach him over all that time and he wanted to give her credit where credit was due. Yes it usually takes months if not years to learn but once in awhile there is a “prodigy”.... someone who has one lesson (or no lesson) and is able to just play like Mozart.
Skywalker Shadai I just thought of a second option: you know how he tells Andie Macdowell that he wakes up every day and lives the same day over and over and at first she doesn’t believe him but eventually on the last day she does? Well maybe on the last day with the piano teacher he straight up tells her that the reason he’s so good is because she taught him over all that time! Maybe that’s why she’s so proud.
@@ckotcher1 An interesting thought....but the teacher would think he’s insane. Anyone would.
Good to see someone discussing Palm Springs: The Original Film.
I loved this movie, I watched it a few days ago and it holds up to this day. Always thought Gobbler's Knob was a funny name for a place.
now that you mention it...
Love this movie. My girlfriend and I went to see this together. The next day we got married. True Story.
Why wouldn't we believe you?
Jfc
I took a copy of the movie with me to Korea in 96-97 when I was in the Army. It seemed appropriate.
The Best Paired Comedic Director and Comedy Actor of All Time what a Duo this movie was Genius with a lot of underling themes. I can watch this if it were Groundhog Day everyday.
It's amazing to me that:
the writer wrote his first and last screenplay (he never repeated this situation again)
the main actor was really a jerk, but at the end of his life, reconciled with his close friend
the film is repeatedly played over the world on Groundhog Day (again, and again, and again)
they never made a sequel (the film never repeated)
the collaboration to make the film never repeated
this film can be watched again, and again, and again, and not get old
this film can be watched repeatedly, and new messages/lessons are derived from it each time
Do we live in a simulation?
Perhaps my favorite movie of all time. I watch it annually. Thanks for all the extra information about the film.
Next WTF happened to this movie ideas:

- Indiana Jone and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- X-Men Origins Wolverine
- Dark Phoenix

Just that dance sequence in Spider-Man 3. Someone needs to explain why the fuck that happened.
I worked with a man from Punxsutawney. He refuses to watch the movie and says many in the town are sore about it
just stupid. movie is genious
Hey it’s on Netflix if you haven’t seen it or want to see it again
Love this movie 🍿
Someone should make a sequel but have it revolve around Christmas
And call it Die Hard
Lol.. there is one! “Christmas Do-Over” A above average TV movie with a very funny Jay Mohr as a divorced dad who gets chance after chance to reunite with his ex (Daphne Zuniga) and his kids..
I love this movie. It's my favourite Bill Murray movie. Yeah, I like it better than Ghostbusters. And don't get me wrong, I do love Ghostbusters.
I recently watched Ghostbusters again after many, many years and was actually a bit disappointed. Groundhog Day really is much better. I don't feel it's aged very much and still holds up fantastically. It's still one of my favorite movies after all these years.
I used to watch this movie on VHS over and over again just because I live near Punxsutawney, PA and thought it was so cool that Punxsy was in a movie. lol
'The last thing you'll see is his shadow..'
That tagine was clever
One of my all time favourites. The parallels with my own life, doing the same stuff everyday, are disturbing.
I have only seen this movie once, MAYBE twice, and I feel I have watched it 1000 times literally. It is enjoyable and painful at the same time
"Murracane". F*cking genius! XD
There was one important factor you missed out. Groundhog day was inspired by the 1990 short story "12:01", a Twilight Zone-style short story by Richard Lupoff. You could look at it negatively and say they totally ripped it off, (which they did) or you could look at it positively and recognise the story had potential to make a great film and I'm so glad they adapted it into a full-length feature.
That was Lupoff's claim in his lawsuit. The judge did not agree, and neither did the production company. There have been many, many plots in film and literature in the "repeating day until you get it right" genre.
So if you started when the loop when the movie was released you'd still be in it ?
Groundhog day paved the way for many other recent movies to replicate the time loop concept, genres from horror, action, sci fi, to romance. Most all of them are B O hits too.
also, i cant listen to that alarm song anymore lol
I was still in College in the late 2000s, and this movie was "Taught" already, as a philosophical type movie. I looked a reading from Descartes and couldn't understand a phrase, let alone a paragraph, and learned I didn't need tob take it, so ditched it. The professor seemed a good person, but I was running out of patience with academia, having taken 19 years for a BA.
i would also love to suggest to people the movie Palm Springs, Andy Samberg really put his finger on it, it's fun but also interesting! Groundhog day movies are my favourite!
What happened to it? It's still playing on a never ending loop somewhere; possibly in another dimension.
I remember when it first came out, ppl just saw it as a Harold Ramis comedy. It wasn't for like 5 or more years that it started to gain cult status. I think Danny Rubin's original vision somehow started to peek thru, and that's what I see when I watch it now for the 1,000th time.
Makes sense. The studio would market it as a Ramis thing, not of some unknown screenwriter.
The movie really turned out to be a perfect fusion of Ramos, Rubin, and Murray’s ideas.
10:00 Nice Danny Rubin has the Nightmare on Elm Street DVD box set.
I think Dr. Show was stuck in a loop for 1 billion years. Good Video: Thank you
Groundhog Day is a classic.
An earlier short film 12:01 (1991) was expanded into a feature 12:01 (1993), and both also feature a day repeating loop. 12:01 was probably an influence on Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day, Edge of Tomorrow, and Source Code
I wonder if Murray was disappointed with his role in Osmosis Jones.
Zombieland Murray says “I don’t have any regrets. Well, maybe Garfield” lol
I believe Murray once said it was around 3 to 400 years that His character was stuck in the loop
What I see in this film is the round and round our lives go through only to die still serving self, enlightenment comes when you shift and turn from self serving Ego to serving others, empathy, love 💗
They made a new one basically, Palm Springs. It was pretty good
Dude, you just reminded me of April Fools Day and know I have to watch it again. It's probably been over 30 years.
Honestly it's one of my favourites so I am heartbroken that it caused a rift in there relationship. Personally I don't think any movie is worth ruining a friendship over.
ARE YOU SERIOUS! I wanna live in the dimension where Tori Amos was in Groundhog Day. I had the biggest teenage crush on her around that time.
Interview With A Vampire is Now: Interview With "The" Vampire and always has been. Mandela Effect?
For those who like the idea, there is a great SF book called Replay which was published before the movie.
Being an alcoholic is a lot like groundhogs day. You keep living the same day over and over because you can never recall what you did yesterday.
i haven't watched the vid yet but the title intrigues me as i just watched this movie last month. i can't believe it vanished since then i hope we can find it.
Somebody please explain to me how yes he keeps living the same day over and over but how old are all the other characters not doing the same thing. How are they still there?
Great information. Thanks for doing the research. I love this film.
I love this movie. One of my favorite movies and comedies of all time.
Whatever the story is on that script, it would've been really easy to miss the mark with this movie, and I think they nailed it. It's one of those movies where you're not even rooting for the guy a big chunk of the movie. You're not sure you want him to get the girl, and don't trust his motives one bit. But by the end, what he makes of that day, he finds a form of redemption by what he makes of the day. Even THEN, though, you never really know what's going on in his head. You never know if it's all just so he can score with the hot producer.. You never know if he feels any kind of genuine love. It's been so long since I've seen it, I'm still not sure he ever got out of the loop!
Can you do a video about Forbidden Planet?
I'd love to know more about it, as it sounds like it was the precursor to basically all sci-fi
Eckhart Tolle says this movie is a good example of his spiritual teaching to accept what is, adapt and adjust to your circumstances and live in the present moment as pure consciousness and awareness.
*A GREAT Movie. I have personally bought this movie at least 3-6 times (VHS,DVD, etc). It's a pity there was so much strife on set especially between Ramis and Murray. RIP Mr. Ramis. Murray seems to have some real issues (alcohol) and in a perfect world I'd be able to help him. I just hope he realizes how short life is, and he appreciates his legacy as much as we do as an audience.*
I love this series and this movie winning combo!
