- WTF Happened To This Celebrity? - The JoBlo series that examines the careers of stars and filmmakers who may have fallen out of the spotlight, and tells where they are now!
From early favorites like SAY ANYTHING to cult classics like GROSSE POINTE BLANK and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, actor John Cusack certainly seemed like he could do it all -- whether in a romcom, drama, big-budget action flick or end-of-the-world epic, his everyman underdog appeal was always an asset. But over the past decade, the reliable star’s career has somehow veered into direct-to-video doldrums. Put some Peter Gabriel on the boombox as we check out “WTF Happened to John Cusack!”

Grosse Pointe Blank has one of my favorite lines of all time;
In the middle of a gun fight, he is trying to have a heart to heart conversation. She yells "Your a psycho!" He calmly explains "No, psychos kill for no reason. I kill for money."
Grosse Pointe Blank is a gem!!!
Anf he creeped me the F out in The Paperman. Holy crap, was he terrifying!
War Inc almost felt like a sequel to Gross Pointe, they are two of my favorites!
I am at home with the me who is on this adventure. This is me breathing.
John Cusack and James Spader are great actors. Who don't get the credit they deserve.
Loved them both in True Colors.
I agree, enjoyed many of his jobs/acting/movies. But when he and many more start telling me I am stupid for not agreeing with them...Now you're just the asshole neighbor who refuses to clean up your dogs shit on my lawn.
I was on set for a movie of his here in Thailand. I asked for a picture. He said, "Not right now" and kept walking. I understood, obviously. He then turned around and said, "Hey, sorry, I am just busy right now.". It was shocking to hear it, but it was also very humbling. He seemed, at the time I "met" him, polite.
What a jerk! U should have smacked him like William Smith did to Chris Rock lo.
What was the movie?
@@oldpunker885 - Shanghai (2015)
Yeah, quite assertive.
People should be more like that. It's impressive to be in that place in that moment, though.
@@zorangajic9299 - ya, I think you are totally right. I hope most ppl. in their 20's get a chance to get on a movie set to see the real "magic" and experience. Even just as an extra as I was.
Grosse Point Blank has one of the best soundtracks ever.
and fight scene, which it's quite an accomplishment considering that it is more of a romantic comedy than an action film. Shout out to Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, the other hitman he fights in that famous scene, also Cusack's kickboxing coach in real life.
Love GPB
@@yakuza01 Yes its pretty crazy how John Cusack took up Kickboxing in "Say Anything" and ended up filming a fight scene against "The Jet" in a much later movie.
Love the opening
Identity is worth watching more than once, so it doesn't matter if you have seen it or had it spoiled for you. It's one of those movies that really sticks with you!
I love Identity. Every time a friend tells me they haven't seen that one I'm like we have to watch it.
I'll just say this once: Better off dead is a masterpiece.
Amen to that 👍👏
Yes, so many funny lines I still quote to this day!😊
Gee Paulette I'm sorry your mom blew up like that
I was amazed the summer I discovered it randomly on Comedy Central or it might have been HBO. Anyway, I nearly changed the channel thinking there was a reason I hadn't heard of it by then (I think it was late 90s 97/98) but I left it on and was blown away by how good it turned out to be and couldn't understand why it wasn't more well known!!
I want my two dollars!! 😁
He was actually pretty polite with the girl who thought he was in American Beauty.
She prolly got him confused with Kevin Spacey. He was sweet though.
American Sweethearts
John "Max Schreck" Cusack will "Say Anything" for p.. publicity
She deff failing that class
How can u be so unprepared for an interview with the great Cusack ! ...and she said she was confused🥴
Do the same mistake with J.Malkovitch and his filmo he would bury u alive Lol
Love "Better Off Dead" and "One Crazy Summer" true 80's classics.
He's Skiing on one ski!!
By the creator of Eek the Cat!
Grosse point blank is a very fun brilliant comedy movie and role.
Also Serendipity from 2001 was great and sweet
I like to think it's the sequel to Say anything, lol🤔😉
Absolutely love grosse point blank!
It actually sound a lot like the tv-show Barry
Easily one of the best films at the time. There were so many bad action flicks and rom coms at the time, and yet this managed to work well in both genres.
I love the scene with Cusack and Aykroyd at the beginning when Aykroyd is rolling up in the Lincoln how he can see Cusack on the Danube.
We've literally watched John go from an early teenager to an adult throughout his movie career. He's matured and so have his movies.
Hello my beautiful great fans , thanks for your support, happy New year to you, how are you doing, I hope everything is fine, you can write me in the hangout app with my email. johncusack772@gmail.com
He’s done the opposite of mature
When I saw The Grifters, I thought John Cusack was going to be the Al Pacino of my generation. He can act up and down the walls and over the furniture and across the ceiling.
I thought the same thing.
Same
Me too.
You forgot about his small role in Chiraq. Cusack is one of the best actors to never win an individual Oscar. He's so damn versatile.
Truly an actor that never cared about fame or notoriety. It was all about paying the bills and love of the craft.
Since The Grifters, I think it has been all about paying the bills.
The Paul Scholes of Hollywood (fotball fans will get this)
And being a Trump hating POS.
@@inthezone4123 The films he wrote and produced like Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, are definite examples of his love for the craft.
But yes, besides those, the rest of his filmography post Grifters was definitely to pay the bills.
You are an idiot. He can pay any bill on the planet.
Anytime Better Off Dead & One Crazy Summer was on cable during the 80s I'd watch it.
John Cusack is the sidewalk King of the cinematic streets. I love this man’s filmwork.
Well said! 💜
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a good movie.
JoBlo, stop what you're doing, drop everything and watch "Identity" now. This is a brilliant film. Doesn't matter if you know the twist or not. It is a must.
I second that !!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yes, please.
I watch it every couple of years and enjoy it even tho I know the end. It’s amazing.
I haven't seen it, but I just watched the trailer. I have a guess what the twist is, but the movie looks interesting, so I don't want my guess confirmed or denied.
@@evilbob840 One never watches a full trailer wtf
High Fidelity was amazing. I think he is an underappreciated actor
There is always time for a good John Cusack flick
Identity is worth watching whether you know the twist or not... It's really well done.
I've always liked that song on Better Off Dead. With One Look
Ditto, I really like the songs attached to that movie. Which turned me on to E.G. Daily (the gal singing at the school dance scene).
The animated burgers to “Everybody Wants Some!”
That is a great song. The soundtrack for this movie fetches some pretty outrageous prices. Check out EBay. Its pretty crazy.
@@barbaralee7385…. Lol, I’d rather find it for free on UA-cam ! But for all those movie artifact collectors… knock yourself out!!
1408 is one of the most underrated movies,
- change my mind -
No. I don’t want to. It was the first film since Blair Witch to scare the crap out of me.
I was thinking about that movie all day today, That's why I ended up on this video. The ice harvest is also really good. I haven't seen it in years and I don't remember what it was about at all, but I remember really liking it.
@@macehilmatecilof4140 Ice Harvest is definitely an underrated film.
Dude!! That wasn’t on his list!
No… Steven Crowder…. I concur!! Lol
Supposedly Cusack is going to be the main villian in the Dexter revival.
fkn sweet
That would be great
You bet not be playing with my emotions man, I've been hurt before ☹️
Once you connect John Cusack to Kevin Bacon, you are easily within six degrees of every actor on Earth.
Kevin Bacon and Tom Cruise in "A Few Good Men" > Tom Cruise and Curtis Armstrong in "Risky Business" > Curtis Armstrong and John Cusack in "Better Off Dead"

I saw Identity in theatres. It was awesome. Still love it.
I think John Cusack is a good actor but he keeps choosing bad projects.
I think the same about John Travolta.
That's Scientology for ya
I think Marlon Brando was right. Filming a lot of pictures is bad for the actor, because "...we only have a few masks in our pocket..." The same happened to De Niro when he started to filming 3 films per year. He started to portrayed himself over and over again. Same to Samuel L. Jackson or John Travolta.
You definitely did not grow up in the 80s....The Journey of Natty Gann was much loved in my 6th grade class!! 💟 I dare you not to cry! Become a member of this cult!!
Omg Natty Gann! I wanted to BE Natty Gann- with a wolf and gloves with the fingers cut off. And smarter then all the grownups.
haha! True, born in 88. I'll check it out now.
I had completely forgotten about this movie till now. I saw it in my 5th grade class!
John Cusack does a lot of great movies. They generally have great music.
My understanding is that he's spent a considerable amount of his career working with a theater group, The New Criminals, he founded in Chicago and would frequently take parts in films to bankroll that project.
I am a member of the Say Anything cult...one of my favorite movies of all time!! Speaking of Cameron Crowe...WTF happened to him? I know Aloha had something to do with it but still future episode *hint hint*
John "Max Schreck" Cusack will "Say Anything" for following
Ironically, I loved Aloha. Not sure why it was not a hit. Except for the generic name of course.

I've seen almost every movie John has done...up until the early 2000s. He just began to fall off...but I still love the guy! He's given us some amazing cinematic memories ❤️ he can do whatever he wants, it's his career/life! 😀
I literally just said that yesterday! Quit reading my mind, Joblo!
The first collaboration between Cusack and Tim Robbins is in The Sure Thing. Robbins is driving in the fragment you're showing...
He doesn't know what he's doing. These videos are a joke
Very true. I meant collaboration as a director, should have been more clear on that. Thanks for watching!

Has always been a fan of his work
The best way I can describe this man is he's a great actor in C grade movies.
C grade movies like "Being John Malkovich" or "Grosse Pointe Blank"?
@@P3t3rminator I think he might of been talking about Cusack's recent work in straight to DVD films.
@@P3t3rminator he's talking about the present time
he's been in some great movies, btw
Reminds me of Mickey Rourke in a way. His integrity always made him pick odd roles in movies nobody went to see, then whenever he did one for the money he hated it.
The say anything boombox thing is an exotic emote in Destiny 2! 🤣
he is one of my all time favorite actors.
JC is just great in everything. Say Anything, The Sure Thing, Grosse Point Blanke, Hot Tub TM, High Fidelity, Pushing Tin, 1408, Identity, Serendipity, 2012, are all ones I've watched multiple times and are each at the top of their genre's. I quite liked The Frozen Ground actually, and strangely Cell too....until the ending that is. I think he has never cared about the fame or becoming a top, top star and just prefers to hang out in his hometown with friends and family and only doing projects he thinks he will enjoy doing.
very true
Con Air isn't on your list!! I have that movie memorized. Lol
Don't forget about Runaway Jury. One of my personal faves
Love&mercy is so underrated, including John

Cusak is a great actor and has a serious presence. I love that guy.
You should still see Identity though, such a good movie and great performances
@Cat Egorical you need to watch 2012 and con air
@Cat Egorical and 1408
@JustMe ill give it a shot, thanks
Totally agree. Identity is fabulous. One of my favourites, ever!!! 😁 X x
I agree about "Identity". I bought the dvd just because he ("The Sack") was in it and have watched it multiple times. Of course I like to rewatch thrillers to see if I can spot the "tells" and I usually find a new one with every viewing.
Even if he only ever made this one film John Cusack would hold a special place for giving me Grosse Pointe Blank. It's one of my all time favourites.
It's great fun. Thankfully he made several other memorable films. Yes, that one has a special place in my heart.
You forgot to mention Chi-Raq bro. John Cusack with Spike Lee is the collaboration we never know we needed.
This guy seems so much like someone I know. I think he probably seems that way to my whole generation. Seeing his body of work is like watching myself grow up.

The Sack IS a cult! I think the first movie I saw him in was Better Off Dead and I still quote that flick today (him apologizing to Ricky for blowing up his mother still gets me). Sure, he's made some turkeys, but his persona is always on point. I thought Identity was great, btw - you should definitely check it out (just thought I'd mention my comment in the comments). He just finds movies that interest him, brings his sister along once in awhile (which I think is pretty cool) and goes to work. I'd love to see him win an Oscar one day...but in the end, I would really just like to see him get noticed for all the contributions he's made to film.

Oh and yes, “awesomer”. That’s a thing 😉
Love Johns comment describing Hollywood ❤️
Bruce willis, Nick Cage, John Cusack
The trifecta of used to be giant stars and now spit out 100 direct to dvd movies per year
Nicholas Cage at least has a certain eccentric charm to him. Bruce Willis has become an asshole who obviously doesn't care about acting anymore. And John Cusack has went down the Lefty, establishment loony bin with his lunatic politics and flawed personal opinions.
@@LordMalice6d9 what does his politics have to do with him being an awesome actor with a slew of classics on his resume?
I can at least forgive Cage for it since he needs to pay off the IRS. Idk what Cusack and Willis' excuses are.

Wow, I missed the Suicidal Tendencies music video with him in it haha. Nice!
"Better Off Dead"
I just want to say that I bumped into one of those "WTF Happened..." videos at the start of 2020 (I believe it was the Bruce Willis one if I recall correctly) and now those are one of my favorite videos of all UA-cam. Thank you JoBlo and specially thank you Taylor James Johnson for bringing us this amazing and funny content. May you guys have a better 2021.
I will always be a fan of The Sac. The fact that he called out the clamor for fame and likability and was then condemned, just endears him to me. I am a steadfast member of the Better Off Dead cult (one of my all time faves), High Fidelity, Grosse Point Blank, Serendipity, Sixteen Candles and even Igor cult of The Sac. Good stuff. I applaud his stance of quality work over money-making, interesting stories over re-hashed subject matter. Seems to be a pattern of those who speak out against the MACHINE of HOLLYWOOD-in full monster voice-being directly shut down by the machine itself. Interesting. 🤔 Thanks for another one. 😉👌
Identity is a really good horror thriller for it's time. It's an interesting story, concept, with some good acting that keeps you on the edge of your seat. You should watch

I LOVE Identity. I remember the first time I saw it and I have never forgotten it and watch it from time to time. My mom actually watched it last night xD
I'm old enough to remember first seeing him in 'The Sure Thing' when it was on release in theatres, loved 'Better Off Dead' when I saw it on video, watched all his films waiting for him to become 'The Next Big Thing'. I'm still waiting for that but, to be honest, remain confident.
He's the shit. Just had a conversation this morning about "Better Off Dead". Or more exact, the hamburger singing EVERYBODY WANTS SOME with Eddie Van Halen's guitar!

Better Of Dead was my favourite Teen movie in the '80s...recently watched this gem of a movie with my 21 yro daughter, was pleasently supprised how often and much she laughed at its comedic absurd magic...John Cusack was complimented brilliantly by his class mate in the movie Curtis Armstrong, even used some of his lines later in life to deflate bullies.
I wish you(the narrator in this video) had seen more of the movies of John's that you speak of. Martian Child, for example deserves a little more love. I imagine people had trouble with it's heart felt tone during a time when super hero movies were just beginning to take over. It deserves more than a casual brush aside you gave it in this video. It also has Oliver Platt in it which pretty much improves any movie right off the rip. Aside from that, Good rundown. For record, definitely check out journey of natty gan. Obviously you're on the younger side, because if you grew up in the 80's yo probably would have seen this movie. Seeing this list reminded me of how many really great movies Cusack has been in.
Re: Utopia - watch the original. Other than that i love many of John's films and always look out for him in films because as you said several times, even if the film isn't great, he usually is (unless he's phoning it in for a d2dvd fodder project, which are usually easy enough to spot). I do wish he'd write more of his own stuff because those are my favourite films of his and anything where he gets to do action is always worth a watch because he's so bloody good at it. I'm sorry Identity got spoiled for you but do revisit it, as it's just a genuinely really good film. I've watched it a few times and always enjoy it, even though i know what's coming. Oh and i think there are 3 of his siblings in GPB by the way.
