Gene hackman never seems to age. He has always looked like he's in his 40s-50s. Even in the early days. Brilliant actor though. This generation could learn a lot from him.
Over 30 years ago, my mother's business partner and his wife were on a golf green. Another couple asked if they could play along with them. He seemed like nice fellow, so the biz partner asked what he did for a living, not knowing anything about Gene. He humbly replied he was an actor. you are very right to use "air quotes" for those "film students" . You are not a student of film if you can not appreciate a film made before the year you were born. Yes, films of the past maybe not as be fast paced or frenetically edited as they are today = but that does not create excite or suspense, it only mimics it. I saw the French Connection first time about 5 years ago, I was in my mid 30s so not young but not old either. I like the movie very much, no it's not boring. People who are saying that seem to be people who are only used to modern action movies and nothing much more than that.
It's disappointing to hear that one of your favourite stars was difficult to work with. Otherwise Hackman was a fabulous actor - never disappointed or bored me in any of his roles. Sure the film may have been a turkey but Gene always stood out with his brand.
I still have a DVD copy of Bonnie and Clyde. I saw it at my school when it first came out, at the age of 14. It had a huge impact. I have thought for a long time that Gene Hackman is probably the best male actor to come out of America. He has played such diverse and sometimes controversial roles. I never get sick of his movies and watch them time and time again.

I was at lunch with six of my American coworkers, all of them in their late 20's. I mentioned that I watched The French Connection again that weekend and what a great experience it was... I realized nobody at the table had ever heard of the movie and didn't know who Gene Hackman was... I lost my appetite.
Way back in 1987 I was waiting at the Philadelphia Airport for a flight to Germany, I was at one of the Bars, (Yep back then bars where in Airports), I was in my uniform and fresh out of basic training, anyway, the bartender set a fresh beer in front of me and said it was paid for and pointed at some guy across the bar.. That guy was Gene Hackman, he smiled, tipped his beer and walked out.. No I never actually met the man, but that was so cool, and completely unexpected
I've seen quite a few Hackman movies (including two not mentioned - "The Package" and "Narrow Margin") - but this made me realize there's a lot of classics I haven't seen yet. Time to do some searchin' on Trakt.
I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Hackman on several movies including the Chamber, which wasn’t mentioned in this video and Crimson Tide in San Pedro during a bad labor strike at Chiquita Banana. During filming, Tony Scott had PA’s sending false messages to both actors to create the wonder war between both actors. I even took both actors down inside a real diesel submarine between filming in which my rechargeable battery in my flashlight suddenly went dead and we all had to feel our way out. During the filming, Gene asked me as a fellow US Marine to make all the actors and extras look like real soldiers as a replacement technical advisor since the first one walked off the set. I miss Gene and would love to meet with him again here in Honolulu regardless of Covid19 restrictions and vs versa. Deep down, he is still a US Marine. Semper Fi
@@theguitardude5613 I'm just surprised that someone had seen the movie that many times and not realize which actors are in it. That's what the end credits are for!
I liked him in Heist (2001, with Ricky James, Sam Rockwell, Danny DeVito), which you didn't mention, but you listed a lot--I'm not complaining. I didn't realize how many Gene Hackman movies I own (10) until I saw this. His performance in Unforgiven may be my favorite, but maybe the script has something to do with that. ("The Duck of Death. . . Duck, I says."") He was such a good actor.

During a break from filming The Royal Tenenbaums, Ben Stiller decided to profess to Gene Hackman about his love for The Poseidon Adventure and how it inspired him to become an actor, director, and made him love film in general. Hackman stared at him blankly for a few moments, stood up, smiled, and said, "“Oh yeah. Money job.” and walked away. Ouch.
I remember the first time that Gene Hackman stood out to me as an actor. It was the year before he became really famous with the "French Connection." He was the lead in an underappreciated film called "I Never Sang for my Father." Here was this actor who didn't look anything like a classic Hollywood leading man, who, in fact, reminded me of my high school geography teacher, and had an odd, almost creaky voice. Yet, his performance was so mesmerizing that I couldn't take my eyes off him. I kept thinking, "Who is this guy?"
Without question, one of my all-time 5 favorite actors. Kudos to mr. Hackman. The greatest of the Great. Thanks for all the years of lnredible entertainment
Unforgiven ! I haven't seen that in years. One of my favourite Clint Eastwood films. Gene was great in that. When he asks Clint what his name was, William Mundy. "The same William Mundy that killed women and children !?" Genes ability to show disdain was off the charts. Loved everything he's ever been in really.
MST3K might have made fun of Marooned, but it's a pretty good film and a somewhat realistic portrayal of what might go wrong on a space mission. The film is about 3 astronauts trying to return from an orbiting space station in an Apollo spacecraft who get stranded in orbit when their main engine fails to ignite. The ground team at NASA has to scramble to try a risky rushed rescue mission, which just might wind up with 4 dead guys instead of 3. This movie was made before Skylab was launched, and NASA took it seriously enough that it influenced their decision to keep a backup Apollo-Saturn I vehicle on standby during the Skylab missions just in case a rescue was needed.
