How to unlock your F90 M5 ECU for Tuning - Full DIY Tutorial

- All BMWs built after June 2020 have their ECU locked in such a way that there is no simple unlock procedure. For a long time tuning them was impossible! But now they can be tuned via a company called FEMTO, but you need to remove your ECU and physically send it to them.
In this video we guide you through the entire process, from removing your ECU, to tuning the car once they are unlocked.

Hey Imram, I have an odd question. We have 93 AKI here in the US, which is 98 RON over in the UK. Recently, Sunoco reintroduced 94 AKI octane here, which is 99 RON UK and you've guys mentioned you use that with your dyno runs and such. Would I see a benefit running 99 over 98 in a car meant for this sort of gas?
Typically 98/99 is fairly interchangeable, from memory BP ultimate is 98. Would I use it for a race event or getting performance data? No. But other than those times where I need every tiny bit of performance 98 is perfectly acceptable.
When custom tuning we tell customers to run whatever fuel they would normally, and we push to the limit of that fuel, whatever it may be.

Is there a sequence for disconnecting the battery leads ?
We do negative first, and reconnect it last.
Is it okay to leave the battery plugged in with the ECU removed? I don't have covered parking and I can't exactly leave my trunk open
Yes it’s fine, as said in the video. Just unplug during removal/installation.
Will everything still work in the car?? I suppose the app won’t work or any internet
Everything will work as intended but it is recommended to turn off OTA updates.
What kind of power gains are seen from the tune?

Doesnt Bootmod3 unlocks it without removing the ecu, with the same steps with the windows, seatbelts etc
No, all tuning platforms require this same unlock. We can custom tune via BM3 once this process is carried out.

How to unlock your ECUs:
Step 1 : send us your ECUs
Just a matter of time before this guy gets shut down and then everyone is screwed hopefully they figure out how to unlock thru the OBD eventually
It’s entirely possible the Femto process is possible through OBD, we don’t know as they’re protecting the process to stop it being patched.
never own a bmw before, first time knowing M5 has two ECU units LOL
Since many years, began by dme and valvetronic, then on n63tu at 2012
Femto has been doing this unlock for the G80 as well same process to unlock.
I don’t understand why they haven’t used a universal unlock so I don’t have to uninstall the ecu and send it to them.
Another negative is if BMW sends and OTA update it wipes the ecu and locking it Agia n. I know many will disable the ota update to retain the tune. Christ what a pain in the ass
Yes, we will be doing a tutorial for G8X also.
They are being very cautious about the unlock as Bosch as supposedly are in a contract with BMW with financial clauses if the ECU is cracked, which it has been. So they are incredibly motivated to fix the flaw, and then we can’t tune at all.
@@EvolveAutomotive thanks I’ve never been able to understand why the ecu got locked down so hard. Could you go into more detail in a video or post? Why would Bosch make such a stipulation and why would bmw comply
