Fuck yeah he is. Not the most complex or complicated. He's not a Travis Barker, Danny Carey, or Joey Jordison. But the drums sound bad ass and stand out in contrast to Steph Carpenter 's dark and gritty guitars
Been listening to Deftones since the very beginning and they are by far my favorite band have seen them live several times and I have to say that your recreation of the sound is right on point. Well done. I would recommend Thomas Pridgeon from The Mars Volta.
i love defrones music but the singing just doesn’t click with me for whatever reason but I’m weird about singing and lyrics 😅 i never really pay attention to them lol
No one realizes the drum tone in that song is so good because of the haunting noise Frank puts behind the intro. And throughout the song. It emulates the snare verb and thus why everyone loves it. No one uses any other song on White pony to reference but that song
Dudes, Terry Date would be proud. Nailed it, as close as you can get recreating these sound. There u have it kids, screw samples, this is the real deal. 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Some suggestions for the next drum sound videos: - Mario Duplantier (Gojira) - Igor Cavalera (Sepultura) - Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins) - Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) - Vinnie Paul (Pantera) - The Rev (Avenged Sevenfold)
this is sick. i know this might be a long shot since he's not super well known, but bryan st. pere of hum was one of abe's biggest influences and his drum sounds on YPAA are awesome. it'd be really cool if you guys could do a video on him.
Fantastic work as always! One suggestion/request: Could you also give quick samples of the cymbals next time? Just hitting each cymbal once or so like you did with the toms, that'd be super nice!
I go the chance to meet Abe once. Great dude as he was a massive influence for me. I was only young and bombarded with him questions about his set up. He couldn’t answer which cymbals he used but I was likely being annoying haha
the snare tuning on DB is pretty much exact! Abe was my #1 drum hero growing up learning to play so this was lovely to watch :) (p.s he used a 20Ply 6x14 OCDP vented snare on my own summer👌)
Great job. As a side note Abe used a OCDP 20ply vented snare for the White Pony album. The higher ply count brings up the pitch of the shell while still having body. You can also add die-cast rims to reduce the overtones.
@@ruanddunah he posted on his instagram showing his snare collection that we was using to record the Ohms record with. in the caption he said that the orange sparkle snare seen in the shot is the digital bath snare, and it was an OCDP Vented Snare
Another amazing video as always. Alongside my previous reconmendations of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Brooks Wackerman from Avenged Sevenfold and Travis Smith, Nick Augusto and Alex Bent of Trivium, I would also love to see you recreate various recordings that have electronic drums like Alanis Moirssette's song "Ironic", Eminem early songs like "Without Me", Cobra Starship song "Good Girls Gone Bad", and my favourite punk band Rise Against songs Prayer of the Refugee. Keep up the amazing work all around.
Still waiting for over a year to hear either city of evil from Avenged Sevenfold, OR paranoid by Black Sabbath albums 🤘🏻 This sounds amazing and great and fantastic work as usual. Keep it up you guys. 🤘🏻
Same day as Roland releasing a video of Abe demoing the new almost 10k$ V Drums (VAD716) with Butch Vig's help... And it still sounds like crap compared to this! Kids, save money and rent a rehearsal space instead so you can play real drums.
@@nickcds3419 You're right but I am guessing they were trying to compare the cost vs quality of sounds. Even then, renting space + affordable kit is cheaper than the Roland.
@@CFChristian you’re also not considering how easy it is to set up and record. It’s sooooo much easier and you can manipulate any sound you want including importing your own sample. Listen, nothing beats a high quality acoustic set. But let’s stop with the hate on electric drums. It’s bull shit
I'd recommend any young drummer learning to play rock music listen to Abe's drumming. As a kid, listening to and playing the parts from White Pony helped make me a better drummer.
That sounds great!!! I have a couple of questions about the overhead microphones placement and mixing: - I always thought that the center axis of a drumset is an imaginary line between the center of the snare (where you hit) and the point where the beater hits the kick drum. I've found myself placing the OH mikes equally distant to that imaginary axis. And to achieve that I started moving one forward and the other one to the back. I've found that this creates the best natural stereo placement of the drum parts in the stereo field, as it narrows it down. Hi-hat and Ride get closer to the center (where snare and kick now sit perfectly) And all toms stay under 50% to the side. I s this why the engineer placed the microphones that way? - This one's shorter: Hoy did you mix the OHS? Are they completely panned to the sides, and (if not) where do they sit in the stereo field (let's say, from L -100 to R +100. Thank you!!!
This might be one of the few covers of My Own Summer where the drummer is playing the bell of the hi-hat. I have no idea why so many people omit this. It was one of the first "unusual" sounds I recognized in a song growing up.
Abe Cunningham is underrated af
he really is, he comes up with some pretty sick drum parts.
One of my all-time favorite drummers along with Jon Theodore
Abe's one of the most renowned drummers of all time in the genre....
Fuck yeah he is. Not the most complex or complicated. He's not a Travis Barker, Danny Carey, or Joey Jordison. But the drums sound bad ass and stand out in contrast to Steph Carpenter 's dark and gritty guitars
Yes he really is no doubt
Your digital bath snare is PERFECT. Wow! Well done
Best overall Deftones song? I think so! The entire tone of the song, the sound of the drums, his voice....
Mario duplantier from gojira sounds next
I absolutely love cracked snare sounds and Abe Cunningham is one of the kings of this craft. Thank you for sharing this video.
Yeah, loved his OCDP vented snares he used for ”my own summer” and digital bath
Oh i freaking love that snare! Props to yall for the quality, great stuff!
Bill Ward's drum sound for Black Sabbath!
Which album? And if they do a recreation…please for the love of god…DON’T DO A POPULAR SONG!!!
Been listening to Deftones since the very beginning and they are by far my favorite band have seen them live several times and I have to say that your recreation of the sound is right on point. Well done. I would recommend Thomas Pridgeon from The Mars Volta.
Same, same and same man!

One of the best recreations you've done. The snare is on point!
PERFECT!!!!!! Abe isnt super complicated, but he plays EXACTLY what the song needs.
Would be awesome if you guys did a drum sound video on Jimmy Chamberlin of The Smashing Pumpkins
💯
Oh yes, he is god damn underrated❤
the tom and snare at the beginning of my own summer is so iconic 🔥
It made me trade my monster ludwigs for a small jazz fusion drumset
true. yet they managed to skip that that and talk over the digital bath intro. wtf.
Would love to see Karnivool.
Great work on this one!
This will be a good one mate
Yessss

Absolutely nailed the digital bath sound. Excellent work
Abe = underrated genius
Love the sound! Deftones is kinda obscure and mysterius ...
Well done!

the tom sound is really great. the snare also sounds nice 👍🏼
Abe's sound is insane. So clean.
Definitely in my top 10 snare tones 🤘

Your ear for drum tech is incredible
Fantastic work as always!

That snare sound really piercing through especially with that reverb and muffling 😗👌
Stellar.
One of my fav drum tones and drummer.
that second snare tone is perfect i should give deftones another shot
Drums on white pony are legendary
Definitely nailed it! Great job!
Not sure why I'm always amazed at how close it sounds....you do it every time!
This is exactly how I tune my drums to get this sound. That snare ohhhh that snare! So good!
Abe's one of my favorite drummers

Holy moly that was spot on for real!
That is so well played and sound so good that it looks like playback, just like the record.
Philip Selway from Radiohead!!
spot on!
Do Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews Band!
he has some of the best drum sounds for 30 yrs now
Awesome recreation. Nailed perfectly. Very tasty playing as well 🎉

Love this one, always thought that around the fur snare sound was killer. You guys gotta do Bill Ward next! ❤
Loved that drum sound from their drums.
You nailed the snare sound from digital bath 😍
A simply beautiful sound
This channel is a blessing! 🙌🏻
Nailed it! Very nicely done 🤘🏽

ABSOLUTELY NAILED THIS, guys.
+1 for Mario Duplantier. Please.
You also NEED to do II from Sleep Token.
Abe actually used a OCDP 6x14 20Ply vented snare on My Own Summer. Great recreation though!
Was just going to say the same thing, he used the Orange County snare on the Around the fur album.
Great video though.
yayyy!! finally! sounds great as always :)
Pretty spot on I’d say 👏
Nice 1, band as a whole just has a giant sound
The Digital Bath snare tone here is SO fucking good it sounds like you’ve sampled it 🥵😍
Sounds sick

Love this Deftones ever since High School Digital Bath i remember my favorite movie they did as a soundtrack THE GIRL NEXT DOOR

Can you do Nicko Mcbrain's sound from Iron Maiden
Topper Headon's drum sound for the Clash, especially on London Calling!

Oh great. I've been looking to grab a DrumCraft bell brass snare on the used market for like 10 years. Now they're going to be even harder to find...
Curious if you have ever looked into a Keith Carlock signature Gretsch.

Abe’s drums sounded this good because Terry Date was behind that sound.
