It's because his style his so ridiculously unique to itself we don't know how to talk about it. What type of beats is her playing? Jazz? Or I have no idea. I'd like to to hear "technically" another drummer talking about what he does like tool's drummer describing what Abe is doing
He has the genius stutter. Dude has become my favorite drummer over the last 5 days, and Deftones has become my favorite band. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE.
My drummers mom went to school with abe and is still close friends . He came out to our last show in sac . Coolest most chill down to earth guy you could meet
I met abe when I was about 16. Massive influence. He was exactly the same, I was firing off a million questions at him and every answer ended with “I think”. Amazing drummer
Gives you descending notes from 10-14 leading with your right hand, 10 R 12 L 14 R, aswell as keeping the 4 piece feel because of having your 12 first, thats why I personally did it, I can imagine his reasoning isnt far off
Seen them live 2 times. The second time was a small venue and it was an amazing show. Epic. I left covered in sweat feeling reborn. EDIT: Cool i tape my sticks the same way.
I feel that's the drummer being interviewed who either doesn't know what hes playing or just doesn't go into detail. I watched a gear masters, dude hardly knew anything about his own kit.
@@betulaobscura gear masters, it's where musicians go and give a tour of the gear. Joey Jordison did one, Mike Portnoy did one, Billy Sheehan has done one, George Kollias had done one, many more.
Abe is my fucking idol and I'm mainly a guitarist. I was born to be a drummer though, I just had parents that required a volume knob. I love drummers who play with a healthy amount of ghost notes on the snare, with a nice, thumping bass drum, who beats the fuck out of their drums and are consistent and dedicated. Abe is the perfect drummer. I'm so sick of trying to find a reliable drummer, I'm about to quit playing guitar/ singing and just playing drums myself. The only reason I haven't, is because of the time I've put into playing guitar and singing.
Endorsed artists who are well established in a successful career outfit rarely know what it is they're using off the top of their heads when it's inquired because equipment is constantly being switched out by their drum techs. Stuff gets broken and needs replaced and what you see on the gear websites isn't always reflective on the touring kit.
Greatest line of all time, "I don't play games". Love it! Any time I've ever heard someone say that whether dead serious or joking, I'll laugh my balls off! And I don't play games....
I’ve seen so many drummers that love to talk about themselves and their inspirations and their technique. Abe is one of my favorite drummers and I’ve yet to see an interview where he talks about himself. He always seems to make a joke and deflect any serious question about himself. Is he just humble or maybe he wants to keep his secrets 😂❤ bad mofo either way.
You are the man Abe. Been digging your twist on drums forever.. Love to jam with you one day. My brother could probably make a serious impression on you. Hes a beast.
Compliments the Iron Cobra pedals, then immediately points out the tape holding the slave pedal in place, and you can tell it makes Abe nervous/uncomfortable a bit. 😬
I'd say if i asked him, he's the kind of guy that would've told me to go for it but, I definitely just about got through talking to him without melting at his feet so I couldn't stretch to asking him for a go ha!
I've been doing this for years myself, its a better feel if you want your tom parts to sound heavy and consistent whenever you move from rack to floor and vice versa
Do you tend to just use one rack at a time in a fill then, rather than rolling through both of them? Also what about tunings? Regular, or something weird to compensate for rise/fall in tone through the kit?
Sometimes I even take away the tom-tom so I can bring my ride closer to me. Thats cause I do tend to use one rack for fills or I usually go from rack to floor, not staying on the racks too often. Now for tuning, I can either use regular to bring something reminiscent of triggering. Or if I want something more punchy, I might tune the rack tom a half step up and very occasionally use an O-ring to the floor tom. Its kinda fun to experiment with those things.
shawn100011 he's been doing it for a while now though not just a one off for this

Very much like a timbale or bonga set up - then of course patterns. Some guys who play quads set up this way - I don't think he uses it like this though.
All most all Zildjian cymbals crack at some point or another. I have broken ZBT’s, A customs, Z customs, K customs. In fact the only Zildijans that made it were the A-hi hat and surprisingly the 10” A splash. Solutions is chuck them up in a lathe and turn them into chimes. Never buy another I have yet to break a Pastie, which makes up the majority of my Kit Now.
I barely recognize him. Maybe he did that on purpose so he could fit in with any crowd at any bar and not get bothered by fans. They’ve come a long way since playing in little towns like Alvin Texas
Massively underrated drummer
You must be kidding. By who? Abe is a legend since Adrenaline LP.

Reformed Stoic where have YOU been all their lives ?? 😆
They've been here you're whole life you just didn't know it. LISTEN to: Around the Fur
Man must have been a wild 5 days
I've been going through the exact same thing. 4 years behind you. 👊
Been listening to them for 24ish years now. I’ll never get tired of them.

Abe is the coolest fucking guy I swear.... I would love to hang with the tones. Still one of the best bands I have ever heard in my life.

"Yeah Yeah"
"This is Ireland"
:D :D
"so this is the abe cunningham signature snare... I think"
hes a rockstar.
It be about fo’ twenty.
What he’s did he using on his drum
Goal: meet and marry Abe Cunningham. LOL. But seriously though, this guy is my inspiration. I could watch his drumming all day.
"These cymbals get disrespected quite a bit...." lols
Abe Cunningham doesn't need to go through a PA. the snare can be heard down the street, outside,, over the PA.

I'm not a drummer, but damn...this video was absolutely great: the information, the artist, the interviewer...loved every minute of it (y)
I always find it funny how the crowd chants “Chino” instead of Deftones.
Me not.
Good interview man. Abe seems really cool as well.
dood is getting THIKKKKK, I'm not going to even be surprised when these guys are still ripping up clubs when they are all grey haired and 60
Chino has definitely aged...his voice is not what it used to be and since Chi’s death this band has not been the same live...imo
Love how he's subtly fucking with dude and it goes right over his head. Abe is the man!
Abe is a huge influence on my drumming, and Stephen is huge for my guitar playing. White Pony is eternally THAT ALBUM for me.
I wish Abe said more about the re-orientation of his rack-toms!

And his perspective on Maple vs Bubbinga was absolutely priceless. Maple drums, ZIldjian Cymbals, Trash can snare......
YES
Miss those OCDP drums tho
Abe is such a great dude. It's always a pleasure to see him in interview's. Love me sum Deftones
A Sabian guy and Zildjian guy getting along...who would’ve thought
Try a paiste guy and a Meinl guy trying to get along.
What a cool dude and great player. Love his gear. He made it into my top 5 over the years. Much respect!
Love this man SO much... Thank you guys for the interview
I got to hang out with Abe at a NAMM show in early 00’s. He’s a real solid guy. Great drummer!!
Abe is such a awesome bro. Always great to talk to and up for some epic laughs.

serious question. WTF does "sounded whopper" mean? I assume it means "shitty" in some sort of elitist drummer lingo.
Skate Boards Whopper means really good

Why does he keep a splash on the side table??
If he has anything in his pockets before he plays, it goes in there.
