- Deftones rolled through Dublin recently to play two sold out shows in the infamous Vicar St. The people of Ireland have been waiting for a long time to see their favourite band and were treated to two unforgettable nights. We caught up with drummer Abe Cunningham before the second of the two nights to talk everything from his brand new Vater Cool Breeze stick to that 'Ash Tray'. Enjoy and do subscribe for more :)

Massively underrated drummer
You must be kidding. By who? Abe is a legend since Adrenaline LP.
Underrated shut up ass Hole
Underrated? Shut up a ssHole
callate
It's because his style his so ridiculously unique to itself we don't know how to talk about it. What type of beats is her playing? Jazz? Or I have no idea. I'd like to to hear "technically" another drummer talking about what he does like tool's drummer describing what Abe is doing
"so this is the abe cunningham signature snare... I think"
hes a rockstar.
It be about fo’ twenty.
What he’s did he using on his drum
He has the genius stutter. Dude has become my favorite drummer over the last 5 days, and Deftones has become my favorite band.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE.
Reformed Stoic where have YOU been all their lives ?? 😆
They've been here you're whole life you just didn't know it. LISTEN to: Around the Fur
Man must have been a wild 5 days
I've been going through the exact same thing. 4 years behind you. 👊
Been listening to them for 24ish years now. I’ll never get tired of them.
My drummers mom went to school with abe and is still close friends . He came out to our last show in sac . Coolest most chill down to earth guy you could meet
yeah he seems cool af...one of my favorite drummers straight up
3:57 "Well I can't wait to get them in my hands..." *hands him drumsticks* LOL
Abe is the coolest fucking guy I swear.... I would love to hang with the tones. Still one of the best bands I have ever heard in my life.
"Wait I can curse right"
"Yeah Yeah"
"This is Ireland"
:D :D
"These cymbals get disrespected quite a bit...." lols
I always find it funny how the crowd chants “Chino” instead of Deftones.
Me not.
Goal: meet and marry Abe Cunningham. LOL. But seriously though, this guy is my inspiration. I could watch his drumming all day.
Abe Cunningham doesn't need to go through a PA. the snare can be heard down the street, outside,, over the PA.

I'm not a drummer, but damn...this video was absolutely great: the information, the artist, the interviewer...loved every minute of it (y)
Good interview man. Abe seems really cool as well.
I met abe when I was about 16. Massive influence. He was exactly the same, I was firing off a million questions at him and every answer ended with “I think”. Amazing drummer
I wish Abe said more about the re-orientation of his rack-toms!
Gives you descending notes from 10-14 leading with your right hand, 10 R 12 L 14 R, aswell as keeping the 4 piece feel because of having your 12 first, thats why I personally did it, I can imagine his reasoning isnt far off
One of the illest of all time!
dood is getting THIKKKKK, I'm not going to even be surprised when these guys are still ripping up clubs when they are all grey haired and 60
Chino has definitely aged...his voice is not what it used to be and since Chi’s death this band has not been the same live...imo
no double bass.......love your style abe....the king
He has double bass my friend. And he´s using it on every record. Purely short figures.
@@vinceventura2393 mostly just doubles, on WBTG he used his double pedal
Seen them live 2 times. The second time was a small venue and it was an amazing show. Epic. I left covered in sweat feeling reborn. EDIT: Cool i tape my sticks the same way.
Abe is a huge influence on my drumming, and Stephen is huge for my guitar playing. White Pony is eternally THAT ALBUM for me.
Great interview!

@@MrMotherfuck123 Define definition.
8:31 I cracked up at that part 😂
Great interview
This is the best ABE video so far. TY !
Love Abe’s unique style, he’s definitely one of a kind and def one of my favorite drummers of all time
zildjian super 5b was a stick model i remember him using for ages
So awesome! Abe is the coolest!
Great interview man.
Awesome!
Great rig rundown, this is cool. Nobody real goes through the drummer's kit in detail.
I feel that's the drummer being interviewed who either doesn't know what hes playing or just doesn't go into detail. I watched a gear masters, dude hardly knew anything about his own kit.
@@jackwilczynski6957 What "masters"?
@@betulaobscura gear masters, it's where musicians go and give a tour of the gear. Joey Jordison did one, Mike Portnoy did one, Billy Sheehan has done one, George Kollias had done one, many more.
@@jackwilczynski6957 OK, thanks!
Abe is such a great dude. It's always a pleasure to see him in interview's. Love me sum Deftones
You're the man Abe!! Hope to put a hand on this signature snare one day!!
What a cool dude and great player. Love his gear. He made it into my top 5 over the years. Much respect!
Abe is such a awesome bro. Always great to talk to and up for some epic laughs.
that 18 inch floor tom lol that's my lil homey. Still my favorite on the set and my favorite color drum kit
Love this man SO much... Thank you guys for the interview
Abe is freaking BEAST!!!
Best rig rundown
love the sound of his kit
Do you know what head he uses on his snsre
@@zues8065 remo black max !
My fav drummer hey Abe 🇲🇽 ❤️ U!!
I got to hang out with Abe at a NAMM show in early 00’s. He’s a real solid guy. Great drummer!!
Fantastic
Hell yeahh! Abe and Deftones
He's a really cool guy, and also my fav drummer as well.
Absolutely Love! Tom Hardys new role as a drummer. His accent is spot on too! It's really weird seeing him with long hair!
Abe is the man. Solid hard hitting drummer. No drums should be unscathed!!!
Still Rad! 🤟🏻🥁🚀
His groove is godlike
Abe is brilliant.
*licks hand*
*gives handshake 20 seconds later*
t-thanks Abe
You are the man Abe. Been digging your twist on drums forever.. Love to jam with you one day. My brother could probably make a serious impression on you. Hes a beast.
very good drumer
Abe is really cool guy!
One of the baddest drummers of all time!!! 🤘💀
And his perspective on Maple vs Bubbinga was absolutely priceless. Maple drums, ZIldjian Cymbals, Trash can snare......
YES
Miss those OCDP drums tho
My brother form another dimensional mother......!!!
Happy 47th birthday Abe!
A Sabian guy and Zildjian guy getting along...who would’ve thought
Try a paiste guy and a Meinl guy trying to get along.
I didn't know Abe was underrated..growing up I've heard him talked about alot.
Thanks for the walk about. Flip the toms
Awesome episode! Would love to see Justin foley from killswitch engage on here!!
Abe is the fucking man!
Abe is my fucking idol and I'm mainly a guitarist. I was born to be a drummer though, I just had parents that required a volume knob. I love drummers who play with a healthy amount of ghost notes on the snare, with a nice, thumping bass drum, who beats the fuck out of their drums and are consistent and dedicated. Abe is the perfect drummer. I'm so sick of trying to find a reliable drummer, I'm about to quit playing guitar/ singing and just playing drums myself. The only reason I haven't, is because of the time I've put into playing guitar and singing.
Always found his style really interesting
Endorsed artists who are well established in a successful career outfit rarely know what it is they're using off the top of their heads when it's inquired because equipment is constantly being switched out by their drum techs. Stuff gets broken and needs replaced and what you see on the gear websites isn't always reflective on the touring kit.
Abe absolute funny dude..
This is my homie!!
Felicticeria...unstoppable...
Opening lick to Feiticeira is a banger
the foundation...of the greatest band
21:22 LMAO!!! I love you Abe
He sounded whopper on the first night. Very cool that he watched some of the videos before hand
serious question. WTF does "sounded whopper" mean? I assume it means "shitty" in some sort of elitist drummer lingo.
Skate Boards Whopper means really good
whopper is a really shitty burger from a really shitty burger chain of restaurants.
That snare is a unit. Can probably feel it in your chest.
What head dose he use
@@zues8065on the snare? He uses Reno black marching head and regular snare side reso
I’ve seen so many drummers that love to talk about themselves and their inspirations and their technique. Abe is one of my favorite drummers and I’ve yet to see an interview where he talks about himself. He always seems to make a joke and deflect any serious question about himself. Is he just humble or maybe he wants to keep his secrets 😂❤ bad mofo either way.
Do you have full gig footage from behind the kit?
Or any more at all?
That's new, a Broken fork attach to the HH 57 mic.
abe cunningham signature toothpick!yeah☺
Nicest guy...
My fucking favorite. The table splash may be an ashtray I don’t know.
Excellent interview. Did Abe allow you to play on the kit?
I'd say if i asked him, he's the kind of guy that would've told me to go for it but, I definitely just about got through talking to him without melting at his feet so I couldn't stretch to asking him for a go ha!
That. Snare.
Compliments the Iron Cobra pedals, then immediately points out the tape holding the slave pedal in place, and you can tell it makes Abe nervous/uncomfortable a bit. 😬
Where is this performance footage?
6:07
thats why i play 13"
Why does he keep a splash on the side table??
If he has anything in his pockets before he plays, it goes in there.
He looks, talks AND acts like Troy Sanders from Mastodon
I think he kinda sounds like Joey Jordison also
All most all Zildjian cymbals crack at some point or another. I have broken ZBT’s, A customs, Z customs, K customs. In fact the only Zildijans that made it were the A-hi hat and surprisingly the 10” A splash.
Solutions is chuck them up in a lathe and turn them into chimes.
Never buy another
I have yet to break a Pastie, which makes up the majority of my Kit Now.
Diftones ! XD
Why the switched over rack toms? WHY?! I MUST KNOW WHYYYY!
I've been doing this for years myself, its a better feel if you want your tom parts to sound heavy and consistent whenever you move from rack to floor and vice versa
Do you tend to just use one rack at a time in a fill then, rather than rolling through both of them?
Also what about tunings? Regular, or something weird to compensate for rise/fall in tone through the kit?
Sometimes I even take away the tom-tom so I can bring my ride closer to me. Thats cause I do tend to use one rack for fills or I usually go from rack to floor, not staying on the racks too often.
Now for tuning, I can either use regular to bring something reminiscent of triggering. Or if I want something more punchy, I might tune the rack tom a half step up and very occasionally use an O-ring to the floor tom. Its kinda fun to experiment with those things.
shawn100011 he's been doing it for a while now though not just a one off for this
Barry Chadwick It makes sense for some drummers, like there are some heavy parts in rock songs where you hit the first Tom and the floor Tom at the same time and get that boom boom pop. And with the 12 inch switched with the 10, u just get more beef. People don’t do it because of fills in particular, more so cause the first Tom is used more than the 2nd rack Tom so to switch them makes sense. I don’t do it, and when I need a deep deep Tom sound, I just hit the second rack and floor Tom or both my floor toms at once but u have to cross ur left hand over to hit the second rack Tom and the floor Tom st once time. It’s not super awkward but def more comfy having the 12 inch as ur first rack Tom. And honestly when ur blazing a fill, it doesn’t really sound bad when u have the 12 before the 10. Like I said I don’t do this set up but I see the reason some drummers do it. Anika niles does this, tony royster has done this a lot, and a lot more drummers. Some say there is more space on the right side for the ride and other stacks or other cymbals but I don’t really see a big difference in actual room but I see the reason in actual playing having the 12 inch as the first rack Tom main Tom if u want that deeper Tom more consistent in your playing.
Hoooly smokes Abe has aged....ehmmm....but he’s still drumming like a beast! ❤️
1:50
Fat Mike Einziger
Spud Coo ha!
LMFAOOOOO
Hard touring and copious amounts of beer will settle around the waist line over time.
The interview is awesome but I'm noticing Abe's humor is too much for ol dude .... not on his level smh
Ol Abe's gettin chubby
m hammett haha. Living that dad life.
Too many good beers
I barely recognize him. Maybe he did that on purpose so he could fit in with any crowd at any bar and not get bothered by fans. They’ve come a long way since playing in little towns like Alvin Texas
did someone fart at 0:59
dat belly :(
It still pisses me off that people scream CHINO! At every DEFTONES SHOW,ITS DEFTONES,deftones its a great BAND not just chino on stage
Drummers and their eloquent ways of speaking as usual 😅
