- A pitbull terrier was shot dead by Gardaí after attacking residents in Cork yesterday.
The attack happened in Ballyphehane around 5.20pm yesterday evening.
A man and woman were taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for injuries.
Gardaí said they engaged with the owner of the dog and after failed attempts to sedate the animal, it was shot by the Armed Response Unit.
Pitbull terriers are a restricted dog breed in Ireland.
This is the second dog to be shot dead by Gardaí this week after attacking someone and the third dog attack in recent weeks.
A nine-year-old boy was left with facial injuries after being bitten by a dog in Limerick on May 29.
Nicole Morey (23) was also killed on Tuesday night by a dog, understood to be an XL Bully breed, at a house in Ballyneety, Co Limerick.
Three dogs were removed from the house and at least one dog was destroyed by Gardaí.
In a post on social media, her sister said her heart is "shattered" following the tragedy which happened on Ms Morey's birthday.
The tragedy reopened the debate around restricted dog breeds, with calls to ban specific breeds in Ireland.
A specialist stakeholder group on dangerous dogs established in March is due to recommend laws on restricted dog breeds, which will be implemented in full.
Limerick TD and Higher Education Minister Patrick O’Donovan welcomed the group and said XL Bully dogs need to be treated as dangerous.
“I think it’s really important to get certainty for people who are considered about this [to know] this is being taken seriously by the Government,” he said.
“These are a breed of dogs that are desperately dangerous and need to be treated as such.
“People need to be vigilant and need to be careful... but we also need to be cognizant of the fact there is a Garda investigation underway.”
Last year, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the XL bully would be banned in England and Wales.
Several months later, the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Executive said they too would introduce their own restrictions.

Maybe it's time the owners were jailed if their dog attacks. That might help. Also perhaps dangerous breeds should just not exist. What is the point of dangerous breeds at all?
Unfortunately people use these breeds to fight and also to breed for money it's awful
All dogs carry a degree of danger especially if not properly controlled in public...recently met a lady with a Rottie on the loose . A s a former owner of a few large breeds I explained to her the risks involved ...I think she was basically unaware.
@@tomgreene1843 and that's why if we had a proper system in place the lady and her dog could of gone to get training and knowledge of the dog and how to handle the dog
@@stiofaininnichlerigh8168 I think she just unlocked her front door to come in and was attacked. Sometimes there's no reason why dogs attack but the thing about XL bullies is that they're so strong and can just turn out of the blue
How could they not exist? WE domesticated dogs. It's on us.
There is no serious Approach to Dog control in Ireland... its non existent.
So sorry for this lady and man.
RlP to the Deceeased lady in Limerick.
Ive never seen a dog warden in my area IN MY LIFE!
So beyond sick and tired of hearing about these dogs. Can there be some sort of penalty for this? Like a serious enough one that this stops happening please....PLEASE! This is crazy. They did NOT deserve this.
Hope the people make a full recovery.
I don't like them pit bulls at all
These types of dogs are just too powerful...should not be bred...simple as...we have enough to worry about than to have animals attacking us!
These attacks happened on private property to people known to these dogs. Requiring dogs to be muzzled and on a lead while walking would not have prevented this. Pit bulls are known to randomly turn on their families.
Evidence?
@@marckenny3131Hundreds of cases you can google or youtube
@@marckenny3131 Where have you been for the past few days?, these restricted breeds of animal are dangerous and believing otherwise is naive.
@@marckenny3131evidence? I’m the nonstop stories of it happening? Including last week when a pro pit owner who has posted online about it was torn apart by her 3 pits. When was the last time a golden retriever tore apart their family?
Here before the dog huggers start mourning the loss of the dog
I am a dog lover but one breed I fear most is the pitbull dog so unpredictable should be banned in Ireland. 😢
not only do they go after people but they go after people walking small dogs. every time it's the same the owner says "oh he's so sweet" then the dog eats them.
Minister Helen is bringing in legislation to prevent these type of dogs in 23 January 2048.
I hear she's sending them voting cards
The sooner the better!. I live in small town Ireland there are many of these animals in the area usually kept in small gardens unsuitable for a normal dog let alone a restricted breed. The common trait that the owners of all these animals have is that they believe their 'sweet little dog' would not harm anyone, I can tell you from witnessing one of these supposed gentle animals in action that this is certainly not true.
Get rid of these crazy unnecessary breeds of dogs now, what is the fascination and appeal of owning a dangerous dog? other of course than image.
Helen is more dangerous than any bulldog
You mean that dope Mcentee.
Owners responsible
Just take a trip on the dart then you see a scenario set for disaster, bulls stronger than their owner kids
They bring Pit Bulls on the Dart?!!
@@theeggtimertictic1136 yes
@@JPcesar-ez2dk Horrifying!
I had a Pitbull I couldn't take him for a walk without him trying to do zoomies while holding onto his leash and practically knocking me on my butt
What is the point of these beasts in society?
We recently rehomed an XL bully, and I completely agree with the decision to ban them. These dogs are too big and powerful, and there is no need for them to be this size. I have previously owned Staffordshire Bull Terriers, which have a different temperament and are smaller, making them easier to control. However, XL bullies are far too aggressive when it comes to territory. Even with excellent owners, it is challenging to control these dogs and assert leadership.
The situation is even more concerning with dogs owned by individuals who seek to use them for intimidation purposes. I genuinely don't know how the government will handle these pets, but the thought of our dog being put down would devastate my family and me. Despite this, I am genuinely fearful of the potential increase in deaths and injuries that could occur if these dogs are not properly managed.
Thank you for your input which is based on experience.
Very honest account of it all .The approach to the ownership and breeding of dangerous dogs in Ireland is symtomatic of how this country deals with challenging situations . But as this gentleman says the humanising of dogs and deciding to ignore the dangers is the problem .But ultimately there needs to be a cultural change and enforcable laws around the ownership of dangerous dogs .
German Shepherd is on restricted list only in Ireland.
Can't understand why German shepherd is a restricted dog in Ireland when they don't ban or restrict a pitbull and in England pitfalls have been banned since the 1990s.Can I also say a yorkies can bite a chunk out a person and they are a small dog but small dog bites don't get the publicity as big dogs like gsds ,rotties etc.
Plenty of airtime for this but none of attacks of other natures I see. 2 attacks in 2 days when we've had none in years?
I would like to know why was the dog running around loose
I think the authorities should have a list of what dogs are OK and if you have a dog that isn't on it then you need to approach the authorities to have a discussion to see if they think it's safe for you to have it or not.
Why was she around the back of the house????
I think it was her house and the dog was loose running around …
Didn’t relise they owned the dog ..
I noticed in your reports you said " on their arms" then previously " in their arms"and " trained gardai" in what????
Was the dog on its own property or was it outside. Because it sounds like it was in its garden??
It's not like the dogs were chatting on facebook
there are A LOT of bad bully dog owners - they just don't care. they train them to be aggressive.
According to McEntee these attacks are few and far between. 2 in 3 days?
It's always the humans fault 🙄
Sounds like she entered someones private property. He said she entered the back of a property and was attacked by a dog 🤷♂️
We cannot say that is the case nor can we say if she had a right to be there.
Her own dog hwr own house.
What is pat writing ✍️ throughout the show is he doing O&Xs😃
I completely agree with Vincent talking about restricted breeds but IMO and this is my opinion people that have a dog that want a dog YOU HAVE TO BE SHOWN HOW TO TRAIN AND CONTROL THAT DOG
And I completely agree people know more about there remote there phone than how to control your dog to be brutally honest parents of children are the very same you don't show or teach the child respect you get violence and disrespect
But people HAVE TO HAVE TRAINING with the dog and you have to be over 16 to have ANY DOG
I completely agree with Vincent
Dont let kids own these dogs its how a dog is brought up and no you should no how to read dogs alot of people get them to show off
No. All dogs have risks attached to them.
I have a Staffordshire bull terrier, and I refuse to follow the breed restrictions because there are 12 breeds on the restriction list and they only choose to enforce the rules with 2 or 3 breeds and was fed up looking at people with other breeds on the list and nothing being said or done about it. I'll follow the rules when they enforce them properly
Lizzy said hi 👋 👻
The laws that are already there to protect citizens from these breeds, and completely not enforced.
As for targeting one specific breed, this is pointless, as there are many many very powerful breeds, so the average tug that wants a power breed on his arm, will just turn to another power breed.
Where the victims in the dogs garden?
Sounds like it to me he said she entered the back of the property
@@akanthonycurtis47
Also said both people were known to the dog.
I think it was her garden & her dog so both her & her dog were on their own property. Her bf released the ring doorbell footage to her family which has unfortunately been passed around, gotten into the wrong hands & shared on social media 😢.
