  • A mother facing homelessness said she has gone around 'knocking on doors' to try and secure a place to stay.
Pamela (54) has been searching for a place to live for her family of four in Co Wexford as she cannot afford to pay a rental hike.
The family rent a house for €1,200 but say their landlord has decided to rise their rent by 45%.
She told Lunchtime Live about the devastating impact of a sharp increase in rent.
"We continued to look for another rental property and have emailed and applied for numerous, countless properties around the Wexford area," she said.
"We've been to what you'd only describe as mass viewings - open viewings - where there's been 30 or 40 different families walking around one house.
"People [are] offering exorbitant rents to estate agents - it's ridiculous".
Pamela said she was due to pay the increased rent on June 1st but couldn't afford it.
"We just paid our usual rent and then on Tuesday we got a registered letter giving us 28 days to sort it out," she said.
"At the moment we have 28 days to pay up the extra rent and then sign a contract for another year on the extra rent as well".
Pamela said they are facing homelessness as they are caught in the middle of supports.
"We're not in a Rent Pressure Zone, we can't get HAP (Housing Assistance Payment) or anything like that because we work," she said.
"So we're not entitled to any Government subsidies, we're not on a council housing list because we're over the threshold.
"We're really just stuck in the middle where we can't afford a private rental but we're too wealthy to be on a council housing list.
"We've gone down every route; they offered a mortgage of €160,000 and I would be paying that back until I'd be 70-years-old at €1,300 a month".
Pamela, who works as a Special Needs Assistant, said she has contacted "everywhere" seeking help and advice to avoid homelessness.
"We've been so embarrassed, we've gone around and we've knocked on people's doors who we know have second houses that they may consider renting out to us, or derelict buildings that they might consider letting us do up," she said.
"We've literally gone down every road."
Pamela said one local representative told her she might be better off moving to England.
"I spoke to a local politician last July/August... and I had said to her we were considering packing up and moving to England only our youngest daughter is deaf and she has a lot of surround-sound systems and stuff in her school," she said.
"She said, 'You know what, maybe that might be something you might consider'.
"We've lived in shame, embarrassment, not being able to house your children - I'm 54-years-old, I've worked in this country since I was 16.
"I'm at this situation at this stage in my life and I'm just devastated".
Pamela said she just wants to pay her way and help her children.
"We're not looking for anything for nothing," she said.
"This is the whole point that I'd like to make: thousands more like us are looking to pay our way - we don't want you to hand us a house."
Pamela added that she's unsure where to turn next because "the landlord is in his every right" as she broke the contract by not paying the increased rent.

That interview was heartbreaking. We, as a nation, should have an onus on each one of us to accommodate our own FIRST. As a retired secondary school teacher, I know how important it is to have educational continuity for any child who has special needs. Her family has funded this state with their taxes. AN DAIL..GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND GIVE HER A HOME WHERE SHE CAN FEEL SECURE AND HAVE PEACE OF MIND. She shouldn't have to worry about the cost of rent. The landlord is obviously taking advantage of our housing crisis. I hope highlighting her case will secure accommodation for her family at a fair rent. What were our land wars for in the 19th century about?....fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale. Shame on our nation. ❤ to her and her family

Record expansion of the work permit system by Fine Gael Minister Neale Richmond, record asylum seeker numbers due to incompetent government decisions which has created pull factors such as O'Gorman publicly promising own door accommodation, Ministers like Neale Richmond advocating for access to the workplace in as little as 2 months, no deportations or failed asylum applicants, amnesties of people here illegally, a disproportionately low rejection of asylum applications compared to the majority of EU countries and lax rules on international students. This is the situation our government wanted. They want mass migration even though they know we have a catastrophic housing situation. And then they pander to foreign investment funds who's only concern in the world is profits, not people.

@sarahann530 Enough with your ignorant comments, Sara. This woman works hard and pays taxes that help other people, so she and her partner deserve to be able to afford a home for themselves and their family in their own country.
That's how the social contract is supposed to work, but it has broken down in most Western societies in the past 30 years.
People like you conveniently forget that wages have not increased in line with the cost of housing. This caller is earning proportionately far less than someone in her position did 50 years ago. Back then, families could survive on ONE income, while today, many are struggling on two.
The system is completely unfair - it's made for the benefit of investors of property, not the people who live in them.
You're too ignorant to see any of that. Instead, you ask judgmental questions that do nothing but reveal your ignorance and stupidity.

This is yet 'another' worrying story, and one of many that has been told before, and will be told again. A terrible situation altogether. It is as if the future, or at least a possible future is barreling towards us. And yet seemingly no concrete answer to it, except of course build more houses and apartments, for sale or rent. But even renting will have its risks of security. The very best of luck to this family, and others to come.

What happened? Seriously what happened? Back in the day and up to the early 2000s you would have never struggled to get a rental. Back in the day becoming homeless would have never entered your head...you would just assume & get another rental. This makes me so angry. In Australia it is as bad too...we are finding our "stereotypical" middle class families becoming homeless because not only are there no rentals but because of the cost of living they are losing their homes to non-payment of mortgages...Pets are being surrendered like never seen before because unfortunately & heartbreakingly they are seen as "disposable" first...not all but it is the common denominator...It used to be no middleman eg real estate agents...it was just landlords who on a "handshake & because they liked your face" you'd get a rental...16 years ago I got my private rental on just that "a handshake" the lease agreement had no personal details other than my name and the address to be rented. Now I am told they go as far as asking for your savings account details? That is beyond acceptable...I fear what comes after this rental. Because at the end of the day "it might be my home, but it is his house & he is going to want it back"....I have practically begged him to stay another 2 - 4 years...for now he says he is happy to allow this "if all goes well" hmm what does that supposed to mean? I will become homeless I know it because it is horrendous out there...I won't give up my pets...they stay with me no matter what...that is my reality...I feel so much for this lady.
