      Thanks 😊! I appreciate your comment! I try to keep him under my wings and I enjoy spending as much time as possible with him. I value every moment because the years seem to fly faster than my Saratoga. I use this type of training to also show him that father and son team collaborations are essential to life. What’s also amazing about it all is how much we learn from our children. Thanks again and have a great day! 😀

      They are awesome! I have glide rings on my MFD but no where near as accurate as Foreflight. I've put it to the test on practice engine out procedures with my settings along with Foreflight's terrain and wind compensation and it is right on point for both airplanes. I find extremely valuable when flying IFR in IMC conditions.

    Your Dynon HDX has a glide ring, select nearest, then the nearest suitable airport.

    • @FlyingDirty

      Hi, thanks for that! I did mention that near the end of the video. I could use that but it is no where near as accurate as Foreflight. It does not compensate for wind or terrain like Foreflight does. Thanks for bringing that up!

      Yes it's a nice tool. I recommend doing some glide tests with your specific airplane to make sure you use the right glide ratio. In my case the POH proved to be very conservative, almost too conservative, so just to have the best approach possible its good to have that precise number

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      @@TheBarzook Hi there, I like your approach a lot! I appreciate the input. I practice engine out procedures occasionally and there's a huge difference between the Six and Saratoga. The Six will drop like a brick without power and I like to fly at 8,000 - 9000 for that reason in most cases. Thanks for bringing that important tip up. 😀

    I use the Glide Ring feature on Foreflight, I definitely like it. Question for you on how you use the Map view when flying. You first had the Sectional view turned off, but then turned it on to see the private airports. I like to leave it off myself, but my flight instructor has encouraged me to leave it on in preparing for a check ride. How do you like to use it? As always, great to see you working with your son.

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Great question Mike. I would have to agree with your instructor 💯. Your examiner will likely expect you to use sectional charts. Aside from that, the map of preference that I use as primary really depends on outside conditions and if I’m under an instrument flight plan or VFR. In this video I was under an IFR flight plan and I was using the Dynon Skyview GPS map as my primary which has everything I need in front view. Then I have the GPS map on the Avidyne GPS, and lastly, a clean Aeronautical map on ForeFlight as my 3rd in line. But I personally would not solely rely on a simple Aeronautical Map for the flight. I like the basic map to supplement the main Skyview GPS map. If you don’t have a sectional primary then I think it certainly would be a good practice to leave it on. I only use the iPad as a supplemental resource for my primary maps on the Skyview GPS. Thanks for the great question and best wishes with your check ride! 😀

      Hi buddy! Hey, thanks a lot and congratulations. I got one of those courses with self grading exams and made sure I knew every question. I was making 100% consistently on the practice exams but I was bummed out about getting an 88% on my actual written. I remember getting upset when I got my grade and the lady thought I failed it. When she looked at my score she was like, "what's the problem?" 😀😀😀 I learned as much as possible and my check ride went very smooth. I remember my first check ride was a no go. It was snowing outside and the examiner asked what should we do? And he was not joking! LOL. No matter what, make sure safety is priority. Best wishes my friend and let me know how it all goes!

    Glide ring is definitely a nice feature! I also have the nearest airport selected as one of the instruments on the bottom-to have the awareness as well. Your son is lucky to have an early start in aviation!!

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Excellent point and thanks for bringing it up. I actually use the nearest on my MFD and GPS and use the Foreflight rings to confirm the gliding distance. But it would not hurt to have the nearest airport selected in Foreflight also. I also have gliding rings on the MFD but it does not make adjustments for terrain and winds. Foreflight nailed it! Thanks and I hope Javier continues his aviation passion.

    I wouldn’t recommend the fuel price trick, as it only shows airports with known prices. That might leave airports out that you could have used. Instead click on the airport symbol icon and it will highlight the airports

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +2

      The key point here is to use the glide rings. The rest is a matter of personal preference. I personally do not like using a cluttered map. That being said, my first choice would be an airport that has fuel and services. If not, I would refer to the VFR map like I also showed on the video which has it all. But as to your inquiry of not using the price trick, I've been using and flying with this app for over a decade and it is currently next to impossible that an airport with fuel service is not noted. Regardless, the emphasis is the glide ring. Using maps and how a pilot chooses to customize it is a matter of preference for each individual.

    Still being new to ForeFlight, I appreciate this lesson. I like how you can fly along, leap-frogging the nearest diversion airports, and have the airport info available with a tap of the screen.
    This presentation also gives me valuable info in considering avionics for my RV-14 build project. You may have seen that many experimental go with dual screen, "airliner style" cockpits. In my case, I feel that one screen (PFD, MFD) is plenty, and using that panel space on the right side to mount an iPad is the way to go. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Hi EJ, I had many people try to convince me to get two screens. But I personally preferred to use that space for my iPad. I use the heck out of it and it can also work as an isolated back-up should the need arise. But, if you had another licensed pilot in the left seat flying then I could see the benefit out of having dual screens. Thanks buddy and it is always a pleasure! 😀

    • @EJWash57
      @EJWash57 Рік тому +1

      @@FlyingDirty Thanks Raul. Your input keeps me in the one screen camp. It's not the cost of an additional screen I'm thinking of, it's cutting down on clutter and improving functionality. Two screens - plus an iPad? Why? If Garmin, Dynon, etc.. offered all the features of ForeFlight? That'd be a good point to having two screens. But why have two screens repeating the same info that's already in front of you? I agree, if there were two pilots flying, it would be nice for the right-seater to have their own screen. In my case, I don't see that happening very often - if at all.

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      @@EJWash57 we are thinking right along the same line my friend. For me it was not necessary the cost factor either. In fact, it was not going to sum to a whole lot more to add another screen. But my whole thing was that I use my iPad a lot for flight planning and as additional resource and would have needed a place for it anyway. I would have probably never used a second unit.
