A really good point that should be repeated to writers over and over: the problem is not that your character wants to hurt rapists, the problem is the only reason you wrote rape is to give your character an excuse to hurt someone.

Yeah, that's a very good point. If he wrote about sexual assault but made his main character part of the victim's support system rather than her white knight, that would put the power in the victim's hands rather than in some random jackass' hands. But Onion Boy has to be the hero so of course he'd never let that happen...

bad writing aside, the way he arbitrarily assigns sexual assault and trauma history to his female characters just so he can become the hero is so disgusting. His female characters are just bags of trauma who onision is there to save and rescue. It's so disturbing. He has such a savior complex and a fantasy of rescuing the poor maiden that he had to include it in both of his books. And I'm not going to say James or Arthur because let's be real- it's Onision. It's so transparent and telling. He's gross and creepy.

    • @leviathanesque

@@dersuddeutschesumpf5444 GRRM uses rape in ways that are boring and cliche, BUT it isn't the be all and end all of his female characters, and you don't get the sense that GRRM had one hand down his pants when writing about it. The presence of rape also (to GRRM's credit) is usually served to further the victim's story rather than a male character somewhere in her life.
Onision's use of assault is very VERY telling - it creates a female character that is at once broken, and sexually available. Her story of assault centres the boy who is special enough to love her (soiled and worthless as she is), and special enough to save her, while she has zero agency of her own - The fantasy of the nastiest kind of dude.

Can a man like that ever change for the better? In couples therapy, therapists will refuse to deal with an abusive partner because they'll never follow the steps, and will instead turn a safe space into a means of demeaning and abusing their beleaguered partner even further.

As a Navy vet, I find Greg's delusional depiction of the military very interesting, and it shows how narcissistic and unable to cope with reality he truly is. I watched the stream Krimson mentioned, and from what I gathered, Greg just couldn't handle some very basic things about life in the military. For example, getting screamed at and made fun of is one of the very core parts of basic training. It's supposed to break you down, so they can build you back up (which some people may have valid arguments against that method, but it works). Greg is too high and mighty to take any shit from a drill instructor, so I bet he did not have a fun time in basic.
The idea that Arthur wouldn't get in trouble for all the fights he gets in is absurd. Even minor fist fights in the military carry swift and sometimes heavy handed punishments. They will give you a second chance and sometimes maybe a third for very minor incidents, but the shit described in this "book" he would have been sent to Ft. Levinworth for sure, which is military prison. Trust me, you don't ever want to end up there. You spend all day doing manual labor breaking large rocks into smaller rocks with a pickax. I'd rather be in San Quentin.
Apparently Greg thinks that all military members need to be "viscous killers," despite the fact that the majority of military personnel have non-combative jobs, especially the Air Force. I was an electrician who worked on F-18 jets, so I barely trained at all with any weapons, they trained me how to fix airplanes and that was it! The people who need to be killers are infantry and special forces, which Greg would never have lasted to become any sort of spec ops anyways. He could barely handle regular basic for fuck's sake.
Ugh, I need to stop rambling. Love the video Krimson!

The interaction between Arthur and Ashley at around the 25 minute mark is a textbook example of an abusive relationship.
Arthur tries to control who Ashley can spend her personal time with. When she refuses and prioritizes something other than what Arthur thinks is important (him), he throws an overblown tantrum and storms away. Then, to regain his affection, Ashley is required to perform an act of contrition to "prove herself" to him.
This is abuse. If your SO treats you like this, they are toxic and you deserve better.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 5 років тому +133

Yep. Basically every single thing done there is a major nope.
      1. If your partner treats or expresses blandly negative opinions of your friends, like calling them "loser idiots."
      2. If your partner tries to get you to stop hanging out with your friends (or family, or basically anybody).
      3. If your partner acts out/throws a tantrum/whatever when you have your own opinions or don't immediately comply with their demands
      4. If your partner wants you to "prove yourself" to them, especially in the context of the above them throwing a hissy fit over you not blindly obeying their petty wishes.
Of course, these do have caveats, or minor variations that aren't necessarily a problem:
1 and 2. If your friends or anyone you hang out with is genuinely a problem, it's understandable for a partner to have concerns about them, but they shouldn't be just insulting them. If your partner perceives some of these people as legitimately dangerous to you, it's okay for them to raise these concerns with you.
      3. While throwing a fit over it is almost always going to be a bad sign, it is a good thing to trust your partner (you should be able to do that, of course) and that means sometimes you won't have complete information, and should trust them enough to defer to them in situations where you can't talk out what's going on prior. Basically, you're a team, not competing players.
      4. Obviously negotiation and compromise over contrary opinions or desires is normal, and in some cases, it's reasonable for parties in a relationship to make clear requirements for the relationship to continue. Even from early on as non-negotiable elements, the most common of which would be about things like cheating, or violence. Also, I generally hold that the idea that you shouldn't change for people to be nonsense, and that while obviously you shouldn't change contrary to your will, it's normal to be willing to change at least somewhat for someone you care about, but it should always be voluntary, and positively-motivated.

@@__lemonade So, this is me being a smart ass and flaunting my genocides studies but the argument is more nuanced depending on how one defines genocide. There is the original definition written y the guy who created the study named Raphael Lemkin, the UN's definition (which is the official legal definition but many argue has great flaws), genocide researcher Martin Shaw's definition (my personal favorite though I disagree with some of his conclusions) and many more.
One thing that is debated is the idea of a persecuted group. Traditionally, you are right, and both Lemkin and the UN have those as the standard. However, many have pointed to Stalin's killing of political enemies as a genocide against a political group or Khemar Rouges horrible attempt to wipe out the "rich" class. So in this case then yes, Onion has fantasized about genocide.
However, there is also the idea of intent (well there are more ideas, but this post is already kind of pedantic) and that is where I would argue the bombing a stadium of sports fans is a mass killing and not a genocide. Now, if he wants to pursue the death of all sports fans beyond this one bombing or at least subjugate them so that they lose their identity as "sports fan" then Onion would, in fact, be what in the genocide academia would call a génocider.
PS: So your argument is totally valid, and I hope it came across that I'm showing off my brain muscles and perhaps starting a conversation and not me talking (writing?) down to you.

26:19 Onision actually did this "dress emo to make it up to me" thing to his girlfriend, the entire scene is taken from his past. His books provide so much insight into how he thinks and it's pretty disturbing.

I remember hearing about that, Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if this 'book' is just his biography (with some selective changes) but with the names changed around.
I mean, the cover gives it away, he casts himself as the model of the main character, Arthur is CLEARLY a self insert, and it's something I did when i was writing fanfics when i was 12-13 and all edgy and shit.

Didn't onion boy here flunk basic training for not killing a rabbit?

    • @calvinlee8103
      @calvinlee8103 5 років тому +89

Onision joined the air force, did very well (physically) in basic training, and though he didn't complete it, he did go through some amount of special forces training (S.E.R.E training, I believe it's called). But even though he did very well physically, he was *not at all* mentally equipped to be part of any branch of the military; not even close. He refused to shoot a rabbit as part of his training, he uploaded a video of himself in uniform (while he was still in the military) performing a "song" that's sole purpose was to bash the military (which is illegal), and skews the facts about his discharge to make it sound a whole lot more honorable than it actually was.
But to me, the worst thing about his military past is that despite never actually seeing any combat or anything, he still says "I'm a veteran, and you should be thanking me for my service". Sure, he is **technically** a veteran, but he is not a veteran of war (despite trying to make it seem that way). He may have gone through the training, but I don't think he did anything to actually serve his country; he *trained* to serve his country, but was discharged (not a fully honorable discharge mind you) before actually doing much of anything.
He's such just a piece of shit. My grandfather served in the US army corps of engineers in WWII, designing and building bridges for allied forces to use to pass through terrain that would otherwise be impossible to traverse; he was, and still is an absolute hero. A few years ago, he gave me his corps of engineers ring. I have never taken it off; it's my most prized possession in the world, and I would absolutely love to punch onision in the fucking face with it.
Sorry, this comment is way too long. I just hate that guy so goddamn much.

12:27 - 'Sure dad tell me how religion brings you comfort, you know there are atheists billionaires who have accomplished things'
1: Religion does bring comfort, that's arguably one of the main ways it propagates.
2: Atheist millionaires did not get their money from their religious views.
    3: Religious millionaires absolutely exist.
4: It is possible to be an atheist millionaire and still be a terrible person.
5: 'Accomplishing things' looks different person to person. Marrying someone you love and raising three children is something many people would consider an accomplishment over 'just having a lot of money'.
This one passage is fractally wrong. It is as wrong as it is possible to be. I cannot grasp the sheer ineptitude of anyone who thinks like this.

      3. I think in his "galaxy brain. smart man" posturing Grego/Arthur forgot about one of the biggest and wealthiestr organizations in the world...which actually solely deals with religion. The Catholic Church. I mean, the higher ups weae signets and golden chains and live in palaces and travel in limousines and have servants. and even the more regular priests...I'm saying this as someone living in a catholic country have like housekeepers to cook and clean for them. and they always drive quite good cars. and it tends to happen that each priest within the parish has his own one.
