Great review. Man, i could write a very long comment, but I won’t. I am a gigantic fan of this band as it was the soundtrack of my teen life in the 80s. I still play them all the time.
In the 80s, I feel in love with someone very hard and these albums (up to BBK) were our soundtrack.
I love all their albums and don’t have any skip over songs. It just depends on my mood.
I would say my fav album is HOH or HOLV. Frou Frou seems impossible beautiful. My 2nd fav song they have ever done.
Tinderbox is my fav song on HOH.
My fav CT listening experience of all time are the Tiny/Echoes ep’s. The sound was a bit more polished than HOH and a great set up for Treasure. Pink Orange Red is my fav song they have ever done.
Also, FCC is a very under appreciated album. I love that album to death.
Great review and thanks
Treasure is such an epic album, but it was done in a rush and it was mastered without their input. The band hated the released version, but the fans absolutely loved it. Victorialand deserved S simply due to the fact that this is the album that essentially created the template for Ethereal Wave. There's nothing else like it out there and created a massive change in how this type of music was written. Although not a "studio album" you should have also included Tiny Dynamine/Echoes in a Shallow Bay as it's a full 8 song album and arguably one of their best. Sultitan Itan alone is an amazing song, but the rest of the album backs it up perfectly.
So do not agree with Milk and Kisses. That record has always surprised me as a strong record from a band that kept improving.
I love 'Milk & Kisses'!
I think Milk & Kisses is much better than Treasure (whose tinny sound hurts my ears) and certainly much better than Four-Calendar Cafe (whose songs are mostly not very good).
I agree. There are several great tracks on Milk and Kisses. Final two Treasure Hiding and Seekers who are lovers are a great finish for a final album. However my all time favourite CT track is Calfskin Smack. A beautiful legacy for the ethereal voice of Liz Fraser.❤
The way the melodies work with the rhythms and chords for this band is what puts them into their own category. My favorites are Treasure, Blue Bell Knoll, Four-Calendar Cafe and Milk and Kisses.
My Ranking:
1. Treasure: Incredible album. All songs are strong and beautiful. Could listen to this anytime and fall in love all over again.
2. Head Over Heels: In my opinion the most solidly gorgeous album out there. When I first listened to them, this was an album way down there. However, as I have matured, it’s the album I find myself coming back to the most.
3. Garlands: I absolutely LOVE this album. I own the CD extra long version. It used to be my favorite. However, it is a specific mood for me. I need to be ready to take it in to experience it fully.
4. Heaven Or Las Vegas: BEAUTIFUL tracks here. Not, in my opinion, as strong as the first two. Not as complex and layered as Treasure and not as edgy as Head Over Heels, but beautiful album. Garlands overtakes this one due to its complexity. Good album for the summer.
5. Blue Bell Knoll: Great album. Lots of variety and flows in between the songs. Solid.
6. Victorialand: Great album. Gorgeous vocals and super atmospheric.
7. The Moon and The Medlodies: An extension of Victorialand almost. Beautiful album, but not quite as good as VL.
8. Milky And Kisses: Super solid. Just isn’t as incredible as the top 6, but incredibly solid.
9. Four-Calendar Cafe: Couple songs I love. Feels a little redundant but is still an incredible album.
Ok. A tier list that makes more sense to me. Last one had head over heals at c, and i was confused.
Treasure / Blue Bell Knoll / Head Over Heels / Heaven Or Las Vegas / Victorialand / Garlands / Four-Calender Cafe / Milk & Kisses ... That would be my ranking.
MY TRUE RANKING: (Subjective)
Blue Bell Knoll: A+++
Heaven or Las Vegas: A++
Four Calendar Cafe: A+
Treasure: A
Milk & Kisses: A-
Head Over Heels: B+
Victorialand: B
Garlands: B-
If I had to insert the Harold Budd collab I'd give it an A. My take is that the Cocteau Twins got BETTER with each album, but they did 'peak' during the late 80's and early 90's.
Also, Blue Bell Knoll, to me anyway, is a masterwork, the album I believe encompasses what the Cocteau Twins were, could be, and became.
Yep!
1. Treasure (1984) = A+
2. Heaven or Las Vegas (1990) = A+
3. The Moon and the Melodies w/ Harold Budd (1986) = A
4. Blue Bell Knoll (1988) = A
5. Head Over Heels (1983) = A
6. Victorialand (1986) = A-
7. Four Calendar Café (1993) = A-
8. Milk and Kisses (1996) = B+
9. Garlands (1982) = B+
This is the band of which it can and should be said, to listen only to their albums is to miss half of the story. Half of their most essential material appeared only on the ep's. Can't miss the Harold Budd collab The Moon and the Melodies. Tier-ing only the albums:
uber-S-tier - Victorialand
S-tier - Treasure, The Moon and the Melodies
A-tier - Blue Bell Knoll, Head over Heels
B-tier - Heaven or Las Vegas
C-tier - Four Calendar Cafe, Milk and Kisses
D-tier - Garlands
Robin Guthrie, contrary to belief, did not use reverb on the guitar. It just sounds to the common ear like reverb. It's mostly combinations of delays, chorus, flanger, and at times his favorite foot pedal, a Boss Vibrato pedal, as well as his sometimes use of a fuzz pedal.
Wow very cool I had no idea! That’s fascinating, thanks for the great information!
My ranking
Blue Bell Knoll A++++
Heaven or Las Vegas A+++
Treasure A++
Four Calendar Cafe A+
Milk and Kisses B++
Victorialand B+
Head Over Heels B
Garlands C
Great video! Have to agree with your rankings, though I have never really listened to the final 2 lps for fear of being very disappointed.
Thanks for listening! I’d say give Four Calendar Cafe a try, you might be pleasantly surprised

I think where you put four calendar cafe was proper.. I will say that it has two of my absolute favorites songs which was Summerhead and Seekers Who Are Lovers. If you had to treat the EP box set as a whole album, where would you rate it?
Seekers Who Are Lovers is a M&K track, not FCC
For some reason I gravitate more to their latter 4 than their first. Guess I take melancholy/ecstasy over dark/droning. FCC is one of my favorite experience albums, I just melt away into it. Surprised more don’t like it, but they have a stellar discography wide enough for any number of opinions.
Fair, but Treasure is the epitome of melancholic ecstacy!
@@curly_wyn What about Victorialand?!? I’ve been appreciating that one a lot more lately
@@sillybilly4710I love Victorialand
