  • The Cocteau Twins are one of my favorite bands - been listening to them and collecting their music for almost 40 years. Let me know your own rankings, or opinions about the band or their songs, or whatever you like. Tell me how wrinkly my shirt is.
    Hang out to the end, after the rankings. I added an extra part showing some CDs I forgot to include.
    Thank you so much for watching. Thank you Courtney for being my fellow Cocteau fanatic, and thank you Hanna for giving me a nudge to finally get this done. Cheers everyone!

    Great collection! Hopefully one day I can find all their music. Four calendar cafe has literally changed my life. I first heard Bluebeard in 2020 when I was going through a breakup. Finally sat down and listened to it completely at the beginning of this year. And immediately bought the remaster on vinyl. I describe it as the perfect feminist awakening album. So beautiful ❤

    Agree re top 3, all of those albums are uniformly excellent. Blue Bell Knoll is my personal favourite though. For me, it exists as a complete work - just beginning to end it flows like a single beautiful shimmery organism. Marvellous.

    Pretty tough to list a Top 20 Cocteau Twins songs, I love so many. However in my top 10 would be for sure "Those Eyes, That Mouth" (my fav'), "Pur" and "Pearly DD".
    Unmissable !

    Awesome collection man, my favorite album is easily Four-Calendar Cafe so I own that record, I’m more of a cassette collector so I’ve gotten my hands on Heaven or Las Vegas and The Moon and Melodies. Except im only 90% sure they’re originals (it’s hard to tell with cassettes). Anyways I’m hoping to find Victorialand then Treasure soon. Great video once again, I really like how you showed us every detail on these records! Cocteau Twins are such a gem

    I totally agree with you about the drums on Treasure. I've been saying the same for years. I often refer to them as the drum equivalent of Fairlight "orch hits": they're not only harsh and fatiguing, but they also sound incredibly dated (whereas most other Cocteau Twins music sounds timeless). I never liked those Treasure drums even back in the 80s (because those exact drum sounds had already been used to death on countless trashy commercial electro hip-hop records).

      @playvinylinthemilkynight1879  6 місяців тому +1

      Agreed, and so many people love that album but never mention the distracting drum machine. It's a great album, but I wish Robin could go back and use a different drum sound.

    Tonight's viewing has been sorted - will be tuning in then! Was just listening to Milk and Kisses in headphones last night at 1AM. Been pondering a Cocteaus ranking video for a while - looking forward to seeing yours!

      Amazing Cocteaus collection, Mike! Some of the most beautiful artwork ever there as well. Stayed up late listening to "The Spangle Maker EP" on repeat last night. Good luck with the move!

    Beautiful collection, Mike! I love Heaven or Las Vegas. In Canada, some versions of Treasure were bundled with Aikea-Guinea (that's the version I have). Good luck with the move.

    Treasure was also my entry point. I want it to be in my top 10 all-time, but the CD and the re-issue remaster vinyl- unlistenable. The sound is shrill and harsh. I don't have/remember my OG vinyl experience (although I'm still using the same speakers), but it just does not sound good to me. I can only listen in the car where the highs aren't as high. Blue Bell was the tipping point, I think the package design was a turn-off, I'm going to revisit that one. I also got the Aikea EP bundled in (Canada), and Tiny/Echo was a gatefold here. Great video, thanks. Also I had a CD of Milk that was a 'not for sale/promo', and had some of the EP tracks included.

      I haven't heard the Treasure reissue. I still have my original, and after all these years, it still sounds great. Fuller sound, not as tinny and bright as the cd and digital versions. I think Blue Bell Knoll, to me, is where they really found their sound, I love those last 4 albums. Thanks for watching!

  • @cmonman3639

    Treasure is my least favorite Cocteau Twins album -- the tinny sound hurts my ears. I'm happy to see you ranking Milk and Kisses so high.

    • @playvinylinthemilkynight1879
      @playvinylinthemilkynight1879  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, I like the songs on Treasure, but the recording, especially the drum machine, is too abrasive for what could otherwise be a near-perfect album.

    Just realized after watching this again that I misspoke about them switching labels to Capitol. They signed with Capitol before Blue Bell Knoll, but did not leave 4AD until AFTER Heaven or Las Vegas.

  • @spoteach
    @spoteach Рік тому +1

    Do you have Extractions by Dif Juz, one of the more obscure 4AD bands (they contributed on Lonely Is An Eyesore)? Robin Guthrie produced that album en Liz Frasers sings on the track Love Insane. Their saxophone player can be heard on Lazy Calm (Victorialand) and on three tracks from The Moon And The Melodies. In fact if you combine Sea Swallow Me, Eyes Are Mosaics, She Will Destory You and Ooze Out And Away Somehow with Crushed and the Love's Easy Tears EP you get a lost Cocteau Twins album. Maybe Bloody And Blunt would fit in as well.

    • @playvinylinthemilkynight1879

      Yeah, I like Dif Juz, they are ok. I remember having that cassette back in the 80s. Thanks for watching!

      Much love for Dif Juz here, too! No one knows were the two brothers who play guitars are located. Richie is on FB and the bassist is in KY of all places. I wish the album they did with Lee Scratch Perry that Robin produced but no one knows where the masters are located.

      @@playvinylinthemilkynight1879 for sure it isn't Pearly Dew Drops Drop...I guess I'm thinking how viscerally important and well received it was when it came out back in the day...I've heard it argued that Primitive Painters (and the Robin Guthrie produced Ignite The Seven Canons) marked the birth of shoegaze. Best wishes, S.
