What the fuck am I watching? I'm pretty sure I've seen a clip of Captain Beefheart on this mad show somewhere. I had no idea middle aged drunk Dutchmen were this wild and funny! It's like Christmas on Ayahuasca!
So we have Nick Lowe on bass, Brinsley Schwarz on guitar in the back, some short guy (Ian Gomm) on guitar to the left, Bob Andrews on keys, and Billy Rankin, drums.
This show was called "van Oekel's discohoek", a comedy show full of absurdistic humor. It was a parody of a serious Dutch music show from that time (around 1974), Toppop. There is a famous episode in which Donna Summer performs The Hostage, and when during that song the telephone rings one of the old guys picks up the phone before she can, listens and then gives her the phone saying (in dutch) "I think it's for you". Hilarious. The music in this show was always evidently playbacked, and the invited groups were well aware of what they were to expect. So no disrespect, but anarchic humor.
A marvellous song by a great group - which you can just about hear over all the Dutch Xmas TV madness.
Top of the Pops, eat your heart out!
Very strange...but Nick's charm shines through. Good song too.
I remember this song from when I was a child but until today I didn't know who these guys were. Thanks to Carter & June's soundtrack!
This brings back fond memories. I watched that show as a kid. Didn't remember BS being in this episode. I only remembered the last bit. Reeds! Haha. 😅
Might not ever drink a Heineken again after seeing this great tune never heard this until today
Not sure what the jokes were about. But god bless the dear old Brinsleys
For a second I thought that was Morecambe and Wise at the start.
Golden days!
Now this why we joined the EEC. Looks like a fine partnership.
Gott und himmel 🤣
Vic and Bob's big Dutch Night Out
Why have I not seen this before? This reminds me a lot of another weird musical combination - when Wire was on a show hosted by Joan Rivers :)
Artful, melodic, just my cuppa T. super duper.
Memories of helping to shift BS Hammond organ off the Roundhouse stage on a Sunday afternoon.
Somebody tell me what(else) is going on here?
I hope this wasn't live, what a way to spend your Xmas Eve 🤣
amazing how a good part of the punk rock scene ultimately came from a country rock band that couldn't break into America
Cosmic.

That's right, Beefheart was on this show. The show was directed by a dutch fluxus kind of artist.

I can understand them very funny
This is a famous Dutch tv show and nobody was drunk
It was a satire
Thank goodness but that looked like real vomit in that bag ewwww!
It’s shit.
Teutonic Light Entertsinment.
this isn't a gig it's a rally or manifesto lol Nick !
Dog bless us all, everyone!
No Dutch birds? A pity.
Billy Rankin was a decent wicketkeeper!
Would've been great without all the extra older guys stumbling around drunk...
WTF did I just watch.jpg
A very weird video, but great music. Pub Rock rules.
Dylan should sue - this is in essence You Ain't Going Nowhere.
I had a song parody about that right then, but since I still like Nick, I won't be that cruel.
Not that Bob's nicked a few ?
@@barney906 Sure - mostly from dead people, I guess.
Nigel Powers was right about the Dutch. What a piece of shit show, and then disrespecting the lads by laughing and goofing over their song.
