I have the ipad mini 6 for digital art and love. my first ipad ever. never regretted buying it. and perfect size for me to draw on. my first time doing digital art too
I’m an illustrator - I have an iPad Pro which is my main device but I also use my iPad mini 6 for drawing a lot as well. It’s a perfect companion device and would recommend it to anyone.
You have such a nice voice and you mention such valid points that I have seen rarely mentioned in other reviews! Also the one sentence summaries on top left corner of the screen is such a good idea! Your review really helped me make a decision! Thank you!
Totally agree. My iPad Pro is my main art tablet. But I LOVE my iPad mini for when I’m just walking around NYC. It’s a great portable digital sketchbook when you want to travel light. 👍 I was hoping Apple would update it with the new M4 OLED iPad pros this week… but looks like the iPad mini 7 isn’t coming out until September. That’ll be 3 yrs since the last update! 😬
I'm an artist, but not professionally. I draw and sometimes upload my art on insta but i don't make any money off it. So as someone who literally draws as a hobby, I love the size of the ipad mini. Before I had one, I used an ipad 7th gen with the 1st gen apple pencil, I use to draw on a galaxy note, huion tablets connected to laptops, and then I tried carrying around a sketch book that's the same size as a mini. Out of all those options, I enjoyed the smaller form of an ipad mini/smaller sketchbook the most. If you're use to drawing on something that small you will feel right at home with an ipad mini. But like she said, it's not for everyone, if you prefer to have big screens and enjoy drawing in large sketchbooks and such, get something bigger, get an ipad air tbh, but for someone like me, who has been drawing for 8 years digitally as a hobby, I love it and I recommend it if you're someone who also enjoys drawing in smaller sketchbooks and such. As for why I don't make money off my art, it's because of the lack of confidence in my own art. I would rather upload whatever I want without the fear of disappointing someone with my art. The anime art I draw is for me and me alone and someone happens to like it, that's cool but I'm not ever gonna do commissions and such because that's a commitment I cannot handle. (I've tried before, it was anxiety inducing, I'd rather not go through that again.)
Thanks! I have an 2018 iPad Pro, and love it too. Bummer about the lack of colour history on the mini. I just picked one up for urban sketching, and it sounds like it will work well for that though. Great tip about drawing on a smaller canvas so there’s a place to rest your hand!
Really helpful video. Had iPads for years but not a pencil and not for drawing/art. Decided I want to now try drawing/art of some kind and buy a new iPad (current one is old) and a pencil. Very close to buying a mini as I fancied the convenience of the size but your summary of the mini being difficult for a art beginner mad and that as I am retired I don’t really have “downtime” as you describe it you saved me making the mistake of buying a mini so I off to buy another decent sized iPad. Many thanks
wow i'm so glad i saw this video before considering the iPad mini. I just naturally assumed it would have colour history. It would just never cross my mind that it didn't???? I would have been so so disappointed omg. Needless to say I will not be buying this when I'm ready to purchase an iPad
Thanks so much for an insightful review! I am still drawing on the original 2017 iPad Pro with 1st Apple Pencil. I'm waiting for the new iPad Pros to release this year to finally upgrade! But in the meantime I want to get an iPad Mini for on the go, workflow, sketching and reading ebooks. I am curious which case you have for the Mini, it's delightful!
Thank you!!! I'm happy to help! Like I said, I really wouldn't recommend the mini for your first iPad. The new base model iPads are killer (and the colors are so cute lol). If I were to lose the Pro and the Mini, I would just buy the normal iPad (it was the first one I ever had). It's not as uncomfortably large as the Pro and it's not as uncomfortably small as the Mini. It's still decently big, yet portable enough you can put it in a bag. It's totally powerful and comfy enough to make art on! I hope this helps! Best wishes on your illustration journey!!!!
I wanted an ipad mini but didn't want to break the bank. Instead I got a Samsung Tab A9 that has a similar size (the screen is 8.7 inches) it comes with 8gb of RAM. I am very happy with it. The potential deal breaker is that it won't support the samsung S pen but I am using a capacitive pen with it. I does the job for me. Also I have a small drawing tablet that I can connect to the Tab A9 if I need more accuracy. I love my small tablet and is very affordable.
Thanks for this awesome review! For the no colour history issue you pointed out, does procreate have a colour dropper tool to reference off colours on the page to get around the no colour history tool?
They do have a color dropper tool! Ngl it drives me crazy having to use it! I feel like I can never get the right color. It doesn't feel like a proper swap for the color history, just a band-aid.
Nice review. It would be a great companion device to go with my Tab S9+. The form factor looks convenient for quick sketches and studies. Although I do have a Wacom One pen to go with the Tab S9+, there's just something about the iPad Pencil and the nib.
Will buy this thing 😍 probably .. Im an xp pen artist .. And want to be portable ..and ipad mini 6 is the best option for portability.. And it is the ot so expensive ipad 😁.. Actually while using krita app and drawing on xp pen 13... The drawing area is actually a size of screen of ipad mini.. So i think it is best fit for me😊
Hey. Can we use it as a second monitor with macbook pro? I want to replace my wacom intuous and looking for a compact device. I create flat drawings like yours too but with Adobe photoshop.
Hey thank you! I think the normal iPad is a better deal than the Air. Procreate isn't a software that will ever utilize the M1 chip really. If you're looking to 3D model on it or use Procreate dreams then maybe but, anything over the standard iPad is a bit overkill for Procreate alone. Once my pro kicks the bucket I'll probably just get a standard iPad. I will have a drop in layers (Ram is the only thing that affects procreate and the air has 8GB while the iPad has 4GB) but, I don't make anything with 100+ layers so I'm not stressing! Hope this helped!

Same! Don’t want to lug the iPad Pro around everywhere.
Omg the colour history thing is a real shocker
Thanks for sharing that

Thank you for this honest review. I was contemplating on what to buy between ipad pro 11 and the ipad mini for digital art. Now I'm sure what to buy.

Just a minor correction - this is "2021 6th Gen" (not 2023)

Thank you! It's the Speck Balance Folio. I'd drop the link but the comment would get flagged! Hope this helps!
Thank you, i'm deciding between buying this one for ilustration work (as my first ipad) and your review helped me a bit :)

Thoughtful evaluation, with great line artwork of yours...

I also get annoyed with the no color history option. I NEED IT
What case do you use for the ipad mini? Looks so good!

@@emeraldanna aww no, that sucks. Thanks for the detailed response! This is really helpful

Thank you! Was torn between this and Air 6 for my first Apple device, will not get this one :)

Ha I love your review! I peep that cypress hill poster!
Haha thank you! I designed it (using an iPad lol)!!!

great video well done, just one question, how many layers can you have open on procreate, photoshop and illustrator?
Hey, great video. What do you think about the iPad Air 5 for someone new to Procreate compared to the 11-inch iPad Pro? Awesome artwork, btw!
Hey thank you! I think the normal iPad is a better deal than the Air.
