      You can repair it by cut open. In this case normally amplifiers doesn’t go wrong. Only speaker cone paper gets damaged.
      I imported from China 3 inches 4 ohm full range speakers But made in China having international quality and daily 6 hrs now plying performing like horse. BOSE Sound quality no other make comes closer.

    Hi. I have a similar BOSE Companion 2 Computer speakers that's not working.
    They came from my in-laws. I'd like to try to see if I can fix it.
    I thought of applying the same technique used when repairing current models of mobile phones.
    Like before prying the LCD or battery, it should be heated first with warm air using a heat gun and spatula to pry.
    I did just that and I was successful. There is no need to cut.
    Yes, there are traces of glue around.
    BOSE's design is just so accurate and precise; so tight that it is difficult to pry.
    But I guess heating the sides did made it easy for me to open without damaging the cabinet.
    There was only one lock that broke.
    I hope this help.
    Thank you. God bless you

    Excellent video, well explained. Makes me angry that the trends seems to be towards making things irreparable. My volume control has a bad connection to the left speaker. Works with downward pressure on knob. It would be simple to fix if I could open it. Shame on you, Bose. Many thanks to the creator of this video

    • @BalakrishnanNair68

      @peteragg9206 Good to hear that this video helped. Unfortunately, the design is such that keeping the speaker's anatomy intact during repair is difficult. I could read in one of the comments that heating the sides could make it a bit easy to unlock the glued tabs. You may try it. It however needs a repair and if you could succeed, you can save the day. Good luck 👍😊

      Yes, indeed. It isn't worth breaking it open. You will not be able to put it back together again to its original "anatomical shape." However, you could use the Companion's circuitry with small bookshelf speakers by taking output from this. I am on its trial. ;)

    • @balakrishnannair2866
      @balakrishnannair2866 7 років тому +3

      Hi. Sorry that I could not film the actual dismantling as I was unsure I would be able to do it.
      The grill is "really really" difficult to be taken apart. For your info, you need to pry it open with a "heavy" prying tool, with pressure applied at the areas where the legs of the grill are (2 each on top and bottom, 3 each on both sides and one each on either side of the volume knob area). As mentioned in the video that the legs, which is of thick metal, are bent and snug fit with the frame inside, and strong adhesive applied over it, the pressure to be applied counts for dislodging it from the glue, straightening the leg and pulling it out. Besides, the grill will be in a bad shape after it is forced open. The grill shown in my video was reshaped after its extraction, with a couple of legs ripped apart.
      Please note that if you intend to replace only the driver unit (the speaker), then removing the grill would be useful. However, if you need to get access to the components inside, removing the grill will not be of any help.
      Hope this is informative. I will try and post a mock video of opening the grill with the already-opened one refitted on the cut-open frame. Will update when done.
      Thank you for watching my video.

      @Joe Blackner It ain't gonna help. If you could checked the linked video, you can notice how the grill legs are bent and sealed. The heat from the heat gun won't reach the intended points. Maybe, you could give it a try. But mostly it might not help. 😕

I think my speakers have aged/ torn diaphragms which can be repaired. In fact, they should be repaired. The rest of the system works well. In its day when it worked, it performed magnificently. • @balakrishnannair2866
      @balakrishnannair2866 7 років тому

      Apart from design change, I think the circuitry appears to be modified as series III delivers more power than Series II. However, if you want to listen to good lows and clearer highs and mids, better opt for the ones that has sub-woofer.

    What is the importance and wattage of speakers you could make out from the circuit. I hope it is 2.5 inches neodymium magnet speakers. Mohan

    • @BalakrishnanNair68
      @BalakrishnanNair68  5 років тому

      Yes Mohan. They are indeed 2.5 inch full-range speakers of understandably 4 ohms/20W as no specifications are printed on them. However, they don't appear to be neodymium magnets - "I am unsure". The speaker cone is paper type, which though sounds better, gets damaged easily over time, as opposed to other materials that are now being used for the diaphragms. Replacing the speakers would be very costly, so better make use if its circuitry if your driver(s) gets damaged.

      As I could understand, the stock speaker would only perform the exact same way when it is fitted in the same dimensions as of the companion II speaker console. Before trying it out, maybe you could use the circuitry in any of your existing bookshelf speakers. It should give you good audio quality depending upon the drivers it has. I have salvaged mine into a pair of Philips 3-in-1 player's speakers and it works fine. It is not worth to spend $50 plus and end up disappointed. ... my opinion though.

      Bookshelf speakers are the small speaker boxes you get along with old midi (CD) audio systems like Sony, Aiwa, Philips, etc. You don't need to buy a new one for this project. If you don't have one at home, check OLX to buy pre-owned ones. Also, you may have to conceal the Bose's circuit either in the speaker box or in a separate container to keep it safe from damage during use.

    • @BalakrishnanNair68
      @BalakrishnanNair68  7 років тому

      Both the speakers are of the same size and impedance and both of them must sound the same in all situations unless you externally control the bass and treble input. It appears that the device is somehow faulty if this is not the case. You may try using your media player in a different speaker system to see if that also has the same effect.

      The speakers that match the Companion 2 Series II might be costly, and could be near par with the device itself I guess. Ebay and Amazon has listings of 3 inch woofers, but getting the same speaker model that Bose uses with the same part number maybe difficult. Hope the compatible one would perform the same way as the stock speakers. Never tried though. Sorry for the delayed reply, if I didn't reply yet - as I don't see any precious response.

      In fact this Bose companion was intended for desktop
      PCs eliminating the need of sub woofer to save space. Overtime, desktop PCs are uncommon and with Bluetooth in play, such speakers are no longer a necessity. Bose's components especially the speakers and volume control components breaks down over time, unlike the robust built of old Sony from Japan which still works. As you mentioned, Creative are of a better choice now if in need.

    Bose companion 2. I'm frustrated. I can't remove the grill, therefore I cannot repair the fault, which I guess must be a small break, perhaps, in the cardboard of the speaker. The use that i have given has been very discreet, I have a great deal of care. No reasons have been damaged. More never buy BOSE. I have lost my investment, which has been great.

    • @BalakrishnanNair68
      @BalakrishnanNair68  7 років тому

      Hi. Sad to know that the speaker is not functioning properly. Usually you get a fluttering noise when bass is increased with torn speakers. Series-2 has paper cone speakers and such stuff is likely to get brittle and tear. There is nothing you could do about it.
      Bose is good for its compactness but it comes with a price. You will get good quality sound with bigger speaker system with the same or lower cost than that of Bose.
      I will try to recreate and post a video soon on how you could "break open" the grill. I am tied up with my routine, which is keeping me from filming the same. Will try to post it ASAP.
