- If you're tired of the boring task of joining granny squares one by one, I totally get it! The join as you go granny square technique totally changed how I approach granny square projects. I’ve been crocheting for 50+ years and this is my opinion based on my experience. 😅The strength of the join is going to depend on the yarn you are using. If it’s acrylic it’s likely to have little give but if you are using a wool or cotton, you can count on more give. I don’t hate this join at all for my acrylic yarn granny squares. I don’t like joining granny squares and this makes it easy. Very nice tutorial. Love your channel.
I have a crochet reference playlist here and this tutorial is DEFINITELY going into it! Excellent! One of my closest friends died unexpectedly a couple years ago. Her hubby is slowly going through her knitting, crocheting and yarn stash. He gave me 31 gorgeous granny squares (all different) she had crocheted. I was thrilled, but also dreading it because of the thought of sewing them together using a blind ladder or mattress stitch. Now I can crochet them together and I couldn’t be happier. Thanks.
O.m.g. I have been so stumped!!
I made a granny square baby blanket 35 years ago using this join technique and forgot how it started. I can now FINALLY start joining my squares and not OCD on whether I like the way the stitch looks because IT IS STILL THE GRANNY SQUARE STITCH😂 thank you!!
Yes!!! That’s awesome! 🙌
Wow!!!!!blow my mind!!!!!!more clean and ease for me.tks❤❤❤❤❤
You did a great job showing how crochet squares can be sewn together. This is the first time I've seen it. Good for the beginners. Keep enjoying crochet. I love it so much although I'm old now❤
I used to avoid making blankets with small granny squares until I discovered this method. It really is so easy. I also had to fiddle around with my corners till I worked out the look I liked best and I also prefer to join diagonally. Great video.
Go with the lighter color! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing this technique with us!
Thanks! First time on the channel and I found you easy to watch and listen to. I am a beginner crocheter and I totally got it.👏
I love this finish and I totally followed and understood the feeling you expressed of crocheting vs. finishing! I can't wait to use this method to complete a granny square blanket in my WIP group that has been weighing heavy on my mind. Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm psyched to find your channel. I've been crocheting for 6 months so I still have tons to learn. My biggest problem is taking on complex patterns. I need to crawl before I walk. Too ambitious. I like your easygoing teaching style too. It does make sense - it's not tedious and boring like finishing can be. It still just feels like creating.
I can completely relate! Welcome, and hopefully I can help you learn a few useful skills 💙
New subscriber here. I love this tutorial! It is easy to follow, and your instructions are clear.
What I love about this method is there is no counting of stitches or worrying whether the stitch count on each square matches up.
I use crochet to join them together and I have just finished my crazy work and I used different stitches and colors and it was really good and I enjoy the idea of your art and I love that you are happy and excited to see it finished and I hope you try a crazy addition to make your own ideas come to life
I will have to try this method because I dislike having to put the granny squares together at the end. This is kinda like quilting as you go, asI am a Quilter as well. Thank you for sharing this technique 🧶
Thanks! I have a stack of granny's ready to join and was I looking for a different method. Going to try this one out!
I like this technique. I'm going to try this next time. I can see how it would feel different because you can get a rhythm going like when you are doing a long flat piece such as a wrap or poncho. It's a continuous rhythmic flow. Ty for sharing.
Now I want to use all these colors I love this join stitch for my granny square blanket,I,m currently making
Outstanding tutorial including the join me as you go bit right at the end😂. Love your work❤
😂 glad you enjoyed it!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have never found someone who holds their hook over handed. That's the way I hold my hook! I am going to subscribe to your channel. This was awesome. You gave wonderful instructions. Have a wonderful weekend ❤.
I really like this combination of colors. 😁😁
Love your joining squares. Looks neater and more simple.
It seems very easy the way that you explained how to connect the Granny Squares! Thank You for Sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
This is so much easier then the other videos I saw on here
I like your joining method & the white or very light colored yarn.
But WOW! I really L❤OVE it done with the darker blue!!!
Even more than the traditional black last-rnds-and-joinings 👵🏻
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! I love the "join as you go" idea & this one is great!! * love the color combo too! ❤😊🎉
I really like the join-as-you-go method of joining. This one is slightly different than what I've seen and done before. I just might try this one. ❤
Thank you. I've been making granny sqs & fighting the joining part, but your way looks very easy!!
Wow I love this JAYG, so much easier placing the squares on top of one another....thank you :)
Wow love this technique gotta try this 🫶🏾
Very nice. Thank you for sharing this with us 🙏 ❤️ Your blanket is also beautiful, and i hope you will show us when you are finished ❤
60’s granny square items are in high fashion right now.
So glad I just found your video! I have some granny squares that I had just started joining and I like your technique much better, so the few I had already joined are being taken apart and done with your technique! Thank you so much for sharing this technique!
I like your technique, I’ve single stitched my squares together because the sewing method never worked for me.
Reminds me of piecing a quilt together
I'm a blue person so I love how the tan color was framed by blue color. It made my heart say Awwww.
Gave me north western vibes! All those winter lay coastal colours. ❤
I did granny square all the blues and it was awesome
Thank You finally a join as you go I understand .. this looks so good .. 🎉😍
thank you ! I have make a couple hundred squares, you have been very halpful to me
This video just changed my life forever!! Thank you so much for sharing this!! I can’t wait to try this!!
Also, how do you get your hair so beautiful and perfect?? 🥰 it’s gorgeous!!
I’m so glad you found it! It really is a fun way to join squares 😆
Also, thank you! I spend a little time using a flat iron to curl it, and that’s about it 💙
Love this technique, wish I used it when I recently did a cardigan, but will be using it soon xx
I'm really looking forward to to trying this out soon!!
I found this really useful. Thank-you so much 🤗
This is the only join method I use. It's the best way to complete your afghan, IMO
My fantasy crochet project is a granny afghan in all different colors. Made a simple one in 1973 in blues with Red Heart yarn and the thing refuses to die. 😆
Hahaha!
And using bold colors to make sure you it's a little bit of your own style and you are making art and the only way to go is enjoy your own ideas and suggestions on what you want to do be happy to say I made it and there's no other one in the world who has it is my art and I love the new style and the universe will provide a great craft fashionable and elegant design for you
Por fin alguien que lo explica bien!. Muchas gracias
I don't care for this method, I think the squares look crooked!! Really good video ❤. Food 4 thought. 😊
Explained very clearly.
New to your channel, really enjoyed watching and learning. Thank you ❤️
I've made quite a few with this join as you go and it's held up over the years. I have one from the early 80's and it's still perfect through countless launderings.
Love the Granny Squares covering a canvas bag. Do you have a tutorial for solid rectangle Granny Square?
I sure don’t, but sounds like a fun video to make!
I love how there are no ends to sew in.
I love this look so good and easy thankyou
Amazing tutorial .way you explain with ease it shows that croching is soaked in your system.😊 just kidding love your all videos ❤
Since you do granny squares:) do you think you will make a granny square cardigan? I didn’t see a video 😊
I so enjoyed this!
Do you put a chain 1 between the two 3 double crochet clusters when making the squares?
The tutorial is terrific!
Was very interesting thank you for sharing.
Ur sooo awesome 😍.. ur a great teacher n I appreciate ya.. thanks again n keep up the awesome work ❣
💙💙💙
This way you join the motifs is great ❤😊
It looks crooked,,,or is it me? Does it straighten up as you finish? But I love this method and will have to try it. The colors are beautiful. Thanks for the video.
These bigger squares have a bit of granny leaning going on. I probably should have blocked some of this out first! So it’s not the join, but worth noting that the join doesn’t straighten the look of unblocked squares.
Looks crooked to me too
She’s the Bob Ross of crochet!
Im definitely going to try this in my next granny square blanket! Thanks so much. Do you have a tutorial or pattern for that square?
Sure do! They’re worked in different colors, but this tutorial will show you how:
ua-cam.com/video/8jRmQvw0i1Y/v-deo.html
Thankyou.
What i want to know is how you got your granny square holes so small. Do you have a tutorial?
Thank You!
Hi, thats a good Technik, i love it ❤❤❤
Thanks
great tutorial
I love this very awesome 😊
Thanks for sharing
Looks nice
This method i use since i was a child because my grandma learned it to me
Saya sangat tertarik dengan alat pemintal benang yang ada di belakang anda beli dimana kah? Mohon infonya makasih
You do make it look easy, for sure. Thank You 😊
I joined squares before with slip stitch
Great instructions. Thanks. I will try it out for my current project.🙂💞🙏
What is a "standing" stitch? Do any of your previous videos explain this?
I don’t have a recent video of this, but that’s a good reminder that I need to make one! A standing stitch is a special way to make a stitch without the need for the turning chain to keep it from scrunching up.
This is a very good tutorial for this method, however, I don't intend to ever use it because it seems to me that the squares are only being held together by a few slip stitches and I would worry about them eventually coming apart. Most of the ways I attach granny squares involves a stitch in every stitch of the granny squares making them very secure. Maybe it's just me, but every time I see someone doing this, I think it doesn't look that secure. Thoughts on that???
That’s an interesting thought! I’d love for others to chime in on this with their experience.
@@bhookedcrochet I would like to hear others experience as well. I make blankets to be used and they get washed and dried a lot. I have been crocheting since 1970 and I know there are. a lot of new ways people are doing things, but I would worry about these coming apart or stretching out between the slip stitches. By the way, I loved your last video with the tote bag. I am going to make several of those for gifts. Don't know why I never thought of that before. Duh... Great job!
I’ve been using this method for years but going from top to bottom, not bottom to top as you do and never had a problem, or heard back from gifted blanket recipients. Hope this helps. 🌟
I made a join as you go granny once and felt that the blanket likely would not hold up well over time, especially with a toddler. Otherwise, great tutorial. I enjoy how you explain things.
I like the finished result of this join. It's pretty and a quite simple way to do it quickly, rather than sewing. I feel it would work well on a cotton top for summer that needs to be breezy, perhaps with more chains at corners? But as a possibly heavy use item, like a winter blanket, may need more secure method. Hope this helps. ❤
Do you ever go live?
Apologies if you’ve already answered this question, besides the colonial blue, what are the other colours you have used in this project please?
No worries! The colors are colonial blue, cornflower, natural and oatmeal.
Thank you so much 😊
The only problem I see with it. Is it has a slight stairs step affect.
Hey I'm working on my first granny square blanket. Mine is a sunburst granny square. The corners of my last sq are treble crochets, do I continue that as I join or so I use the method you are using??? I'm a newbie :)
To put it in very simple terms, to help most people see what's happening, it helps to use a medium to light color that makes good shadows. What I mean by that is that light to medium colors better not so bright or shiny as to put off a lot of light and shadows appear in the spaces between the strands. For example looking at your squares , the lighter blue color in the square, would be more helpful than the darker slate blue color you chose. Yellows and golds, as long as they are not too shiny... lavender, periwinkle, cornflower blue, light purple, pinkish purple, deeper pinks... peach and coral and salmon do well with most people's eyes and most lighting creaters use. It's the Shadows that are happening between the strands that helps people because of the delineations they make.
That’s brilliant!!
Ok, I’m lost… I love the granny square bag, but I can’t find the pattern, please help!
No worries! You can watch the video I made here: ua-cam.com/video/nD8fMtHlinU/v-deo.html - and to see the step-by-step process on my website, check here: bhookedcrochet.com/2024/04/11/a-quick-canvas-bag-diy-with-granny-squares/
Join as you go seems more daunting for me
Aren't there open gaps that show?
Only with the stitch pattern, but not at the corners of four squares or anything.
Alright!
Wow, I’m loving this method. Thank you for sharing😍
Why arent your joined squares even.? They look offdet to me.
I think it is not blocked yet.
🌷🌷🐈⬛🐈⬛🌸🌸🦋🦋
ua-cam.com/video/Mpyh-OWlXVA/v-deo.html - perfect lofi playlist to crochet to
There's no sound
Easier way, but it looks crooked
Very uneven at the bottom
I’m also in granny square mode right now. Love all the fun granny content! Working on squares for the canvas bag tote!
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I’m having too much fun with granny squares right now 😄
Love this! And love the granny square come back projects. Thank you! 🧶 ❤
I'm making several things (who isn't) and am craving the easy of grannies so I will be treating myself with a granny cardigan (as we are heading towards winter when knit wear can be worn, finally!) I think this join could work.
Thank you ..I never understood it before. ❤❤😊😊😊
Hello! Thank you so much for this video. However, I’ve been struggling with this technique. I’ve tried it multiple times and it keeps ending up crooked/slanted. Do you know why that might be? Is it something that would be fixed with blocking?
It seems too significant to be fixed with blocking…
So glad to stumble across this video while im here having my coffee. Im literally pulling out my needle and joing color skein for some square's ill be joining to put together a kitchen curtain. These squares have been sitting here for awhile now and I just haven't wanted to join them with the sew method. Well now i have a new way to join. Thank you!
A granny square curtain sounds beautiful!
My daughter would put them in in the right color for me to stich the best way for me to get a better idea of how to get a better understanding of the art it is important to me as I am not a person who makes the same thing again and I enjoy learning new ways to help people help me relax and enjoy the process of getting a new blanket to the people who have a different way of doing something that is a amazing thing to continue to be a positive thing to do and you do what you want to see
Be the best possible way to do something for the best possible way to be happy
Interesting. I’m liking the idea but would a single crochet be more secure than a slip stitch? Trying to think how that would work. Might give that a try. Will be saving this video! Thank you.
I tried this but it is not very secure. It stretches too much and does not hold up if you really use the blanket or bag. Looks nice and is quick to do but I would only use it if the project is for display only.
B.Hooked Crochet, I loved this video so much, I had to hit the like button!
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Love those colors and the darker blue very pretty
At first I just saved this and was gonna watch it later… which probably meant I wasn’t gonna watch it because honestly I have a lot of join as you go’s saved that always end up looking confusing 😅 I kinda got into pattern reading lately so it’s been a bit since I’ve watched one of your videos, but then it clicked in that you and one other UA-camr were a life saver when I was teaching myself how to crochet so I watched it right away. So glad I did because… although it did look confusing… it also reminded me of why you were so helpful to me… the WAY you explain stuff doesn’t miss a beat. It is like you are having a conversation with us. You put your thoughts all the way through the teaching process. I just love hearing the good, the bad and the ugly of crocheting 😂💪 Your style will always make you a prized go to for me no matter how long I crochet! Keep us learning!!! This one I will try and probably try again and again til I get it right… but I’ll be having fun listening to you explain it 😁
This just means the absolute world to me! 💙 I’ll always have this in the back of my mind when making new videos. Thank you so much for that!
I agree, this is the first time watching and I enjoyed every minute. I usually click out, but was interested to see what you were going to say until the very end!!!❤
