How to Join Granny Squares with an INVISIBLE Seam (Mattress / Ladder Stitch Tutorial)

  • In this beginner crochet tutorial, we will learn how to sew granny squares together with the Invisible Seam (also called Mattress or Ladder Stitch). This seam leaves a completely invisible finish on the front, with perfect, sharp corners. The stitches are barely noticeable on the back. Although this stitch is time consuming, the result is worth it as no other joining technique gives such a neat finish. This seam should work with most granny square patterns that have chain 2 corners.
    THE ORIGINS OF THIS TECHNIQUE
This stitch has a wide range of uses in many different crafts such as knitting, doll making, and sewing. It goes by many different names - I even learned to how to use it for suturing when I worked as a midwife. I do not claim to have come up with this technique myself. I learned a version of this stitch for granny squares years ago from a blog post online - it has been so long I am not 100% sure where from. It may have been here as I remember I definitely learned JAYG here: www.cherryhear...
The square in this tutorial is my Solid Granny Square pattern.

If your corners have 3 chains (or 1) then you will need to adapt this method in one of two ways:
    1) Assign either the 1st and 2nd chains or the 2nd and 3rd chains as the "corner ch2" and treat the other chain as if it were any other stitch. Your squares may be slightly skewed but if you are consistent in the chains you assign as the corners and potentially block your finished project you should still have the same look as if you did 2 chains.
    2) Ignore the 2nd chain entirely, i.e. put your needle in through the first chain and out through the third chain. You squares will not be skewed but you will not have sharp right angles in your corners
I recommend trying both and going with the method you prefer the look of. Remember there is no right or wrong in crochet, only preferences for different techniques!

It's been sitting in hand sewing, I mostly see it used to close up pillows or stuffed toys. Never would have thought to do it with crochet though, now I've just gotta get my brain to comprehend how to do it with my hooks since I don't have a tapestry needle

I have just subscribed and then saved this excellent video. I’ve had a few crochet disasters over the years when granny square bedspreads that I’ve crocheted together, after a couple of years , have unraveled along the crocheted seams…….literally a never ending story! 😢
So now I always sew my squares together…….but I am never happy with that because the result looks thick and clumsy after all the hard work making the squares ( see Janie Crow Love is enough). Many thanks for this clear explanation of a truly useful stitch.

This PD was respectful to the team for their unexpected discovery of a missing person during an intended clean up mission. AWD handled the discovery perfectly as they stopped everything to call the PD to inform them and while they waited, cleared the area and covered the car respectfully. Kudos to all!!!!

What I like about this video, as compared to the half dozen other I watched, is Meema tells you how to start so you lock in your yarn and then she tells you how to join corners so they're perfect. Also, she's actually doing the mattress stitch, not the ladder stitch and then calling it a mattress stitch. So this IS the video.... IMHO. Thanks Meema!

You lock in the same way you weave in yarn ends. I weave in my ends on the back side and make sure I reverse my weaving over the area I just woke my end in. Only do this for a couple of stitches and split the previous woven yarn with your stitches. It will be nearly impossible to pull out and can only be removed by back tracking each woven stitch.
