Hi friends, I hope you enjoy the video. I'm consistently seeing the same questions pop up in the comments of my videos so I wanted to address them here. If you have others, let me know xx
Actually though! I've been following some rando tutorials lately for Halloween stuff and I've burst out laughing over and over because of the rediculose wording or bizarre pattern. One had stitch markers everywhere but she wasn't telling when she put them in, like they would just be there after an edit cut but then she was telling the viewer to stitch to the marker without even telling how many stitches there was, half the pattern was just missing 😂
Videos like this one help not only beginners, but those of us that are self-taught! I started using stitch markers a few years ago and they are truly indispensable. Great explanation for determining the number of stitches needed for a project. You're never too old to learn something new!
Of all the many many videos I’ve watched on how to crochet no one has addressed my questions and then I found you and this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
Great video! I have been crocheting since I was 7, 54 years ago, when my Grade 3 teacher taught me to crochet, and I still get my edges mixed up, and I'll keep this as a reference. It's funny, she also taught me sc instead of calling it a dc. It took me until about 20 years to realise that I was taught a mixture of UK (which I thought I was using) & US stitches. It hadn't been a problem for all the Granny blankets I'd made until I tried some different stitches. I still have to double check a chart if I'm using dc, as my brain calls that a single crochet. She would be happy that I actually listened and learnt something, even though it was wrong.
I wish I saw a video years ago when I was trying to learn crochet during 2020. I have just subscribed to your channel. I love your calming voice and look forward to all that you do. Thank you!
Wow that was just what I needed to know about the chains 3chains = 1in 😊 thanks so very much for sharing this information with us all it was very helpful 😊😊😊
I've been wondering if I was supposed to work into the stitch or the space too. I had no way to know (until I saw this video) so I did it both ways to see which looked better so I guess thats ok! The 3rd tip is Gold for me. I had NO idea how to make a baby blanket size... Your explanation is so simple. Thanks for the tips...❤
I'm a self taught crocheter, I'm guilty of not using a stitch marker and I do make these mistakes. This info is very helpful and since I have started Amigurumi, I use a stitch marker and it makes a world of difference. Thank you for taking the time to show us how to properly do these things.
🎉I thought I wasn't going to learn new...just get confirmation of what I already knew. I was pleasantly surprised. 😂 I'm elated! Some people are natural born teachers and that is clearly a gift you've been given. Bless you. 😊
There are few people I follow for crochet, but you are my go to person even after watching someone else. I always ask myself if you can explain/demonstrate/inspire me better without all the fluff. And the answer is almost always yes! ❤
Oh that’s awesome to know, thank you. If you ever have ideas of things that you want explained simply , please share. That’s my goal with the channel and I need to know what will help you all the best , y’know? ❤️
One of the best crochets videos I've watched on UA-cam. I've been crocheting for a few years. I've made a sweaters and trying to learn new stitches from books. I always struggle with the things you mention in this video. Thank you.
My grandma taught me both knit and crochet when I was a kid but always struggled with turning the rows and having my sides match up, i put crochet down and kept knitting because of it but your video and someof the kits we have at the yarn store I work at are enticing me to pick crochet up again
I cannot wait for the day in crochet when I know what I am doing like you! You make it look so easy until I try doing itself. Thank you so much for your help.
I understand- something that’s supposed to be a relaxing hobby can be so stressful at first! I promise , it will come with time . Find a hook and yarn you love and it will encourage you to do it more often. And then the rest comes naturally. ❤️❤️
That was interesting and now I know how many chains I need for a proper width of a blanket. Sure will help when making a sweater. Probably be able to determine which size to use to fit me or another person.
This is so helpful! I haven’t been sure about these and often had an extra stitch or not enough stitches . You have made everything so understandable. Thank you!
I learned crochet basics about 30 years ago but since about two years I‘m crocheting more and more complicated things than simple potholders for my puppet kitchen. 😄 By now I somewhat have the answers to these questions figured out. But your explanations made all the things I regularly wonder about so much more clear! I eventually figure it out in my projects but it’s sometimes more of a trial and error process than KNOWING what I’m doing. This video shall be watched three more times and saved to my crochet board for reference! Thank you!
Another clear and concise video! You sure do have a knack for making things sound simple. Your videos have helped me with so many projects, and I’m so grateful. I have a question: where do you get your little round stitch markers? They look so easy to use one handed. All the markers I have won’t work with just one hand, and I wind up having to put my work down. Thanks again for your great channel ❤
Thank you ! These are called the crochet dude stitch markers. I get them at Michaels . They are made by loops & threads. There’s a link for them in the description. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t sell them. The only drawback to them is they can slip off if you’re not careful so they aren’t suitable for every project but I love them and use them the majority of the time . 💕
This video is very helpful. I'm going to share it with my daughters. They don't crochet as often as they probably would like to, so this can be a great refresher course for them. Oh and I have three cats and the one that gets involved with my yarn bowl is the same color as yours lol.
I have been crocheting for quite a few years and I am very thankful for your tip about stitch markers and the turning chains! Thank you! I liked the stitch markers you were using and I am going to get some, thank you for the link!
Well I feel like you covered everything, but I think Biscuit definitely wanted to add a few tips. ;) Maybe you covered them in the next video, I'm going to go check it out now because this was VERY HELPFUL for me! Thanks!
Excellent tutorial!! Thank you for explaining in such detail. I’m new to crochet and have been struggling with chains and turning. This will be so helpful and I am sure I will be referring to it quite often.
Oh my goodness! Yes, stitch markers. I started a a C2C moss stitch a few days ago, and it's absolutely necessary for the turning chains because I can't seem to find them otherwise.
My issue with starting is counting stitches and when to start the count. Its so hard to figure out from the hook what is the first stitch, or even skipping stitches , as a beginner I feel that teachers overlook this way to much and just breeze over counting stitches . Thank you for going over these issues.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been crocheting for awhile, but am self-taught and still have gaps in my knowledge. This video has helped me to understand the mistakes I am making.
Thanks for this tutorial! I just ripped out about 10 rows on an afghan because one side kept getting wider and curvier! It hurt my heart but it was a necessary evil action! 😭
Thank you so much. I have been crocheting for years ❤ but this video is so helpful, especially the tape measure part. I didn’t know that and it blew my mind. 😊Also, kudos on your clear, patient and kind style of teaching and the great video work too. Props from a fellow educator. ❤
That’s probably the hardest part of crochet but you’ll find the perfect yarn/hook combo for YOU . Don’t get too caught up on how you think you “should” do it. If it feels good and doesn’t cause you repetitive strain, You’re golden 🤩🧶
I've been crocheting most of my life. 👵 Stitch markers are INVALUABLE ! I use them all the time. Alleviates the dreaded frogging several rows later. 😂 Great refresher video for us seasoned crocheters!
Hello Roz ... Happy Sunday to you . Three years ago when i stumbled upon your Channel which is a Godsend , i remember asking you to help me figure out multiples and you gave me a link to follow . Crochet multiplication which I've saved for any project which calls for it . However ; seeing your tutorial yoday is great .❤❤❤ Have a wonderful week with the boys & girls . .
Hi Roz: Thank you for this video. Very informative for a beginner like me. Appreciate you sharing your expertise. BTW, love your catchy channel name. 💜😎🇺🇸
To determine how many stitches you need for a size your want, first make a gauge swatch in pattern with the exact yarn and hook. Measure how many stitches you have in 4 inches then determine the number of starting chains plus turning chaingthat you need. If working a pattern that is not in straight rows you may need to work a larger swatch as the chain will not lay flat, if ripple or waves.
I am new in your channel and I notice your needle. I wonder where I can buy them . I love your channel and it has made me learn a lot of tips that you so unselfishly shared. Thank you and God bless
Joining's always bothered me, I like to have something a seamless whole (I think I'm perceiving seams as weakness). When I put together a granny square blanket for a friend using squares he and his grandma had made together, the 'flat-braid' join I was using wanted me to drop the loop, reach through the gap with the hook, and pull the loop through--my crochet hooks don't have handles so I found I could simply reverse the hook and pass it through the gap. Now I do that with every join, zippering a pair of pieces together as I put the last row onto the second.
I can’t find reference from beanie/cat hat tutorial about head measurements? Love your tutorials. Turning chains give me troubles. I think some tutorials think you are advanced enough & don’t tell you if it counts and there isn’t a written pattern. Anyway, I’m new to your site & look forward to your weekly tutorials. Be blessed be safe
The guide is in the description box below the video. If you aren’t sure where that’s located , there is probably a UA-cam video that shows how to get there. On your phone, Look for “more” and click it, it is like a drop down menu . 💕
Super helpful! Thank you! You are an excellent teacher. I am learning to do granny squares and can never figure out where to put the next stitch if the instructions say “join with a slip stitch.” Into the same stitch you just did a slip stitch? Or into the stitch next to that? Thanks!!
Thank you so much! Yes, that can be confusing. You’re going to place your first stitch into the same stitch that you placed your slip-stitch 👍🏻 Have fun , granny squares are my favorite 😍
Where did you get your stitch markers? They look easy to use compared to the locking ones I have. Thanks for the video! Lots of help for this newbie. ❤😅
Glad you enjoyed the video. I can only find them at Michaels (link in description) . I wish they sold them more easily online. 😕Crochet Dude Stitch markers by loops& threads ❤️
I get them at Michaels . There should be a link in description but if not they are by Loops & Threads . They used to be called the crochet dude stitch markers. 🧶💕
Oh my goodness! I always find your videos very helpful, but I tend to be one of those people that tries to figure it out by myself rather than bother asking questions. So I always learn something new and have a lot of "aha moments" when I watch your videos. In regards to the turning chains, I often find that HDC's only have one turning chain... would you normally do 2 regardless??
Very helpful video, thank you. I’m a newbie, if I start a new skein by pulling from the middle (inside), sometime the yarn is so wrinkled. I still do not have a neat chain down yet, and, then trying to handle yarn that’s wrinkled is so frustrating. What to do?
That can be frustrating . Your chains will get better and better the more you do it. 👍🏻 but as far as the crinkly yarn… if it’s really a big problem for you , you could invest in a small hand steamer and spray the yarn to help loosen and straighten it out before you use it . Or you could get yourself a yarn winder and rewind it so that the nice straight yarn is placed in the center and you’ll use it first. I have a knitpicks yarn winder that’s about 20 dollars . That’s all I can think of 🤔💕
Are you working into a chain? If so then yes , you are just working into the chain and you’ll see one strand of yarn over your hook as you go in. But if you are working into a stitch (let’s say a single crochet ) then you’ll see a v shape at the top of the stitch. You want your hook to go under both of these strands of yarn. If I didn’t understand your question properly, let me know 💕
I wonder if those kits have measuring tapes that are in cm, and even the side that is supposed to be “inches” is funky. It has happened to me before 😅.
I just came across your channel and subscribed. I hope you can help me with my problem. I was asked by my daughter to chrochet a tablerunner with thread. I like to try new things, so I said yes. I haven't done this before. I use Aunt Lydia's chrochet thread number 10 and 1.5 mm hook. But it looks awful. Do you have any tips and tricks for me to succseed?
Great to have you here 😀 What about the table runner looks awful to you ? Too loose , too tight? Thin yarn like this takes practice and time to find a rhythm that works for you just like working with other sizes of yarn. A simple fix could possibly be adjusting your hook size . 1.5 was a good match for #10 but going up or down a half size could improve your tension. I bet that’s really all you’ll need to do to correct what you’re unhappy with. Otherwise , maybe it’s the thread itself. Sometimes the finish of the fabric we make with the yarn isn’t what we expected and it’s simply because it wasn’t the one used in the images we were following. I’ve had that disappointment many times. But I’m just “spitballing” with that one. Anyway, I’m sorry you are bummed with the end result but I’m sure it’s just a tension issue which I’m confident you can resolve ❤️
@PlayHookywithMe Thank you so much for your help. I forgot to tell you it was the tension. The work was too loose. 🙂 I started over again with a 1 mm hook, so now it looks much better. Thank you again.🙂
I am grateful for this informative video. I have the opposite problem for adapting the size of an old pattern. The pattern gives a specific length for the starting chain, but no multiples. I want to change the width, how do I do that?
Yes , a bit more tricky but doable. You need to reverse engineer for that one. Figure out what the pattern repeat is for that first row . How many chains does it take before it starts the sequence over again. I would take a piece of paper and work on it that way and see if you can make it line up properly with smaller sets of the repeat. Also look at the first stitch made to discover what the possible turning chain amount is . You might find a situation where you have an extra chain or 2 after the multiple that needs to be included to make the sequence work (like the 3+1+2) example. Hope that makes sense or gives you some ideas ❤️
@@PlayHookywithMe that is helpful, thank you. I figured out that the row begins with 3 hdc, then the pattern begins with a repeating sequence of 4, then the row ends with 3 hdc. But I just think of that as 3+(4x)+3. So is the multiple10 plus the turning chain?
@@PlayHookywithMe your suggestion to put it on paper made me think of diagrams! I learned crochet diagrams years ago but I never use them. Doing this would make me clearly see the pattern and turning chain. Thanks for the inspiration. In the coming days I will let you know how it's going.
@@dianefreeman7194 since the 3hdc is just as the beginning and end , i don’t think it would be included as the multiple since it’s not a part of the pattern repeat . It’s just on the ends . It might be a multiple of 4 + 6 + the turning ch . But it will be easier to know for sure once you’ve done some different lengths as tests. Yes please keep me posted!! I’m curious!
Hi friends, I hope you enjoy the video. I'm consistently seeing the same questions pop up in the comments of my videos so I wanted to address them here. If you have others, let me know xx

Hi Roz, I don't know why some people make things so complicated. You've always made things so clear and easy to figure out. Thank you so much.
So glad it’s coming across as clear and simple. Thank you , dragonkat ❤️❤️

They don’t “make things so complicated”. They’re just in a different place along the path than you.
Thank you so much. Been crocheting for years but end of row sometimes leaves my brain one elephant short of a circus.😂You made this so easy.

You are awesome!🎉
Thank you so much! 😊🧶
Good information ❤❤❤
Thank you , Jane ❤️
Joining's always bothered me, I like to have something a seamless whole (I think I'm perceiving seams as weakness). When I put together a granny square blanket for a friend using squares he and his grandma had made together, the 'flat-braid' join I was using wanted me to drop the loop, reach through the gap with the hook, and pull the loop through--my crochet hooks don't have handles so I found I could simply reverse the hook and pass it through the gap. Now I do that with every join, zippering a pair of pieces together as I put the last row onto the second.
Great tweak to the method, excellent 😀🧶❤️
I can’t find reference from beanie/cat hat tutorial about head measurements? Love your tutorials. Turning chains give me troubles. I think some tutorials think you are advanced enough & don’t tell you if it counts and there isn’t a written pattern. Anyway, I’m new to your site & look forward to your weekly tutorials. Be blessed be safe
The guide is in the description box below the video. If you aren’t sure where that’s located , there is probably a UA-cam video that shows how to get there. On your phone, Look for “more” and click it, it is like a drop down menu . 💕
@ thank you so much! Love your website!!
@ thank you ❤️
Thankyou sooo much ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Super helpful!
You’re going to place your first stitch into the same stitch that you placed your slip-stitch 👍🏻
Have fun , granny squares are my favorite 😍
Wow, that was a great informations. Thank you
Thanks so much 😀🧶💕
Where did you get your stitch markers? They look easy to use compared to the locking ones I have.
Thanks for the video! Lots of help for this newbie. ❤😅
Glad you enjoyed the video. I can only find them at Michaels (link in description) . I wish they sold them more easily online. 😕Crochet Dude Stitch markers by loops& threads ❤️
Please help me where can zi buy your one twist marker I can’t find them in Amazon it looks so handy. Your great teacher thankso😮😊
No, I’d stick with 1 since you are getting good results.
It’s like dc’s for me … I like 2 chains instead of 3 👍🏻💕
Ok, that's very helpful. Thankyou
I subscribed at your 'old lady brain' comment. I share that struggle.

Thank you for subbing, great to have you here 💕🧶
I didn't know I'd be learning a whole new language but here I am killing it!😂😂😂

You bet! Thanks for watching ❤️
Thank you so very much ❤

Great video! 😊
Thanks for the visit ! 💕
That’s all I can think of 🤔💕
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching! 🧶💕
When working your first row, if it doesn't specify, do you typically just go through the top loop for that row for , say for a row of singles?
Are you working into a chain? If so then yes , you are just working into the chain and you’ll see one strand of yarn over your hook as you go in.
But if you are working into a stitch (let’s say a single crochet ) then you’ll see a v shape at the top of the stitch. You want your hook to go under both of these strands of yarn.
If I didn’t understand your question properly, let me know 💕
@@PlayHookywithMe Thank you!
Hold onto vintage tape measures. Some new ones aren't accurate. The ones in discount sewing kits for example.
Oh interesting 💕
I wonder if those kits have measuring tapes that are in cm, and even the side that is supposed to be “inches” is funky. It has happened to me before 😅.
@@LBDservices wow , too funny 😅
@@PlayHookywithMe hehe 😉
I just came across your channel and subscribed. I hope you can help me with my problem. I was asked by my daughter to chrochet a tablerunner with thread. I like to try new things, so I said yes. I haven't done this before. I use Aunt Lydia's chrochet thread number 10 and 1.5 mm hook. But it looks awful. Do you have any tips and tricks for me to succseed?
Great to have you here 😀
What about the table runner looks awful to you ?
@@beautifullybroken7431 oh that’s great!! 👏🏻👏🏻💕
@@PlayHookywithMe This would be a great question for a Part 2 video. Thank you!
