- The Gentle Barn founder Ellie Laks reading a story to 14-year-old rescued chicken Sunrise.
She was rescued with so many of her siblings and has outlived them all. Sunrise has arthritis and now needs to be in a wheelchair but she's still loving life at The Gentle Barn and gets treats, music, and story time.

My cockatiels loved being read to so much that I started getting books on tape from the library with the accompanying books. Their favorite which I bought was “Chica Chica Boom Boom” and then say “Artie & Smartie are in the room room”. They would laugh out loud and nod their heads fast in affirmation.
I think she likes the story.

Hi! Just wanted to say how much I'm moved and inspired by all of you people's work! 😭 i live in south asia (Bangladesh) it's a disgusting 3rd world Muslim country and animal abi5e is a norm and if you rescue animals you'll get ridiculed to the point of harrassment, as you can guess how conservative religious cult followers..... ever since i was a child i used to watch discovery and animal planet tv shows and wanted to dedicate my life to helping other animals, i started rescuing cats, dogs, birds and some arthropods too! Recently i adopted a paralyzed kitten from a Facebook page and I've been nursing him 24/7 but my """""family"""""" is just making my mental health reach it's peak breaking point recently, my dad is an awful man as every cultist men are and blah blah blah mom won't kick him out of the house thats under HER name bc hes a man and that's against the religion blah blah i am just EXHAUSTED to the MAX. but often i watch your videos and i calm down quickly, yes this path of helping many poor innocent lives is hard, emotional and hectic even sometimes but the outcome is so much bigger and beautiful than you can ever imagine. I saw this quote in a video i don't remember whose it goes like this "saving one animal won't save the world, but it'll save the entire world for that one animal" and trust me, your patience and love will help them more than you can imagine ❤ thank you so much for the work you do, keep going ❤ because of people like you Sharing your journey through the good and the bad times people with similar passion to give love and warmth to these poor lives get inspired to get up and keep going even after they fall because they live in a 3rd world cult country. I’m torn. I love seeing animals safe and happy and living great lives. But selfishly I also love meats. Idk how to feel tbh.
