this is called broody breaking, it's intended to encourage a chicken not to sit on eggs for so long that they neglect to take care of themselves. it is normal and safe as long as you set up the means a chicken needs to still eat and drink and be comfortable!
This behavior is called “brooding”. When a chicken is being broody they will invest all of their time and energy into laying their eggs. This can easily lead to starvation and dehydration because of her strong motherly instincts. This can also be detrimental for newborn chicks that hatch early, making the hen freak out and “end” the baby. Mostly happens to new mothers. It is important to fix the hens’ brooding behavior for the sake of her health and the chicks’ safety
@@Naomi_best_ Yeah. It's not a for definite "if any chicken eats eggs they will always smash theirs to eat them." But it's a definitely an observed phenomenon.

@@axuwu6939 you're on the right track- broodiness is partly triggered by increased heat, and can be "broken" by reducing temperature. Chickens don't really mind rain; the saying "Mad as a wet hen" comes from farmers using the old cold bucket of water plunge method. Broody hens are SUPER irritable already so imagine how cross one would be after being taken off her nice warm nest to be stuck into a bucket of cold water!

My female parakeet was according too much attention to the male, which he didn't like. He became apathetic and didn't want to eat, we thought he was sick. Long story short he moved him into a different cage, and he got all better instantly
We had some really good mother hens who would raise the chicks even if they weren't hers. We would simply leave more eggs in their nest when they went to eat. My parents got the eggs from the ones who were known to break the eggs. You could possibly see if anyone is selling fertilized eggs near you (which sounds weird) but is something you can buy.
Or just break a wing. Leave the other wing in case they become criminals again. Or a foot. Yeah, feet are good. Or gouge out an eye. They eventually go all I'll do whatever you say, boss, regardless of my hormones. 👎
With my parents, they always added a small pole for the hen to roost on at night. Not a nest box, but like...a thick wooden dowel. That way she could still be up/off the dirt and comfy, but not able to create a nest/lay eggs/brood. Worked every time for all the chickens I can recall having while growing up. Oh, and they also put the cage on bricks to help with air flow underneath
You can tell who doesn't own chickens in these comments because this is a perfectly normal thing to do. I like to call it the factory reset for overly broody chickens 😂😂
Hi I’d just like to explain some things I am a chicken owner of 6 chickens, however 2 dies so now 4 When a chicken is called ‘brudy’ it means they want to hatch eggs and be a mum, however without a rooster this will be impossible, when he put her in ‘jail’ it’s not actually it’s just a separating process which will stop the brudy phase and it’s perfectly safe for hens I have had 3 brudy hens- Apollo, Pringle and Yokey R.I.P Apollo and Boris you will forever live in my heart Hope this helped have a nice day ❤
I really needed this‼️ I've 2 hens doing the same... Only on top. Of each other... In 102° So thanks for everyone's remarks And they didn't eat nor drank in this heat ... They have a fan and I water the coop with rug on top and around where the air goes into the fan

it's always the buff orps, isn't it
Pull out a fire aspect sword, we're having cooked chicken tonight
This behavior is called “brooding”. When a chicken is being broody they will invest all of their time and energy into laying their eggs. This can easily lead to starvation and dehydration because of her strong motherly instincts. This can also be detrimental for newborn chicks that hatch early, making the hen freak out and “end” the baby. Mostly happens to new mothers. It is important to fix the hens’ brooding behavior for the sake of her health and the chicks’ safety
You wanna be careful with the chickens cracking the eggs. Once they do it they can get a taste for it and will do it again
For real?
It’s normal for them to eat their own eggs every now and then , especially if they are low on calcium they will do it for the eggshells.
Cannibalism 😋🤤
@@Naomi_best_ Yeah. It's not a for definite "if any chicken eats eggs they will always smash theirs to eat them." But it's a definitely an observed phenomenon.
I accidentally tasted a baby once and now I can’t stop
We stick a frozen water bottle in the nesting box. Breaks broody quickly.
I've heard of this also
I've never heard of this in my 4 years of chicken care. Can anyone elaborate on how / why this works?
@@KittyBabyMan I’m only replying so I’ll get notified when someone answered because I don’t know either and now I’m curious! But I saw on another video that dunking them in cold water helps because cooling down their system basically tricks their bodies into stopping the hormonal cycle? I wonder if it’s the same thing here?
@@axuwu6939 you're on the right track- broodiness is partly triggered by increased heat, and can be "broken" by reducing temperature. Chickens don't really mind rain; the saying "Mad as a wet hen" comes from farmers using the old cold bucket of water plunge method. Broody hens are SUPER irritable already so
imagine how cross one would be after being taken off her nice warm nest to be stuck into a bucket of cold water!
@@suzbone Thank you! Ha, I can’t blame them, I already get mad as a wet hen when I have to get out of my comfy warm bed in the morning. Getting dunked in cold water would just be adding salt to the wound!
I sentence you to a 72-hour commitment.
“She can still visit her friends on the outside” 😂❤
Gives “jail bird” a whole new meaning
She needs a chicken lawyer and a fair trial
See comment above 😅
Butter chicken. 😂 I'm dying at the name! I love punny food related names for animals and that one is perfect, intentional or not.
I’d usually find my chicken some fertilized eggs and just left her be a mom. Some chickens are really good mothers and enjoy being a mom.
Glad to see chickens also need jail. My parakeet sometimes has to be put on horny jail to leave my females alone 😩
My female parakeet was according too much attention to the male, which he didn't like. He became apathetic and didn't want to eat, we thought he was sick. Long story short he moved him into a different cage, and he got all better instantly
@@Canonedifie wtf 😆 i dont even know what a parakeet is but sounds interesting...
@@Canonedifie So even birds are intimidated by strong women? The hypocrisy!!! When will the slut shaming end??!
She's so fluffy and cute, i just wanna cuddle 🥺
and she was clean too
This is the second buff orbington I’ve seen incarcerated should we profile chickens?
That chicken tryna become an only fans creator when she tryed to kill her own children
Ma'am really said, "You won't hatch? Guess you choose death"
Legends say butter realized that chickens can go to jail
Nice to see a living Butter chicken.
"Mam, you're under arrest"
"But, you can't do this! I'm a mother!"
"You're not, which is why"

@@cassandramollura4233 it's good for her health to make sure she can't continue to try and hatch the eggs

"My chicken has commited a crime"
Nandos and KFC have entered the chat.
Bros trying to be the joker.😂
I was watching this while eating chicken💀💀💀💀
My chickens dont like jail either
Icepacks work too, hold it to their belly (with a towel if they got no feathers) and it kind of resets them.
Or just break a wing. Leave the other wing in case they become criminals again. Or a foot. Yeah, feet are good. Or gouge out an eye. They eventually go all I'll do whatever you say, boss, regardless of my hormones. 👎
@@user-zk8qp9iq7lDude.... What is wrong with you?
@@user-zk8qp9iq7l If you wanna bait,do it somewhere else
With my parents, they always added a small pole for the hen to roost on at night. Not a nest box, but like...a thick wooden dowel. That way she could still be up/off the dirt and comfy, but not able to create a nest/lay eggs/brood. Worked every time for all the chickens I can recall having while growing up.
Oh, and they also put the cage on bricks to help with air flow underneath
I thought having roosting bars was standard? I've never seen a coop without at least one
@@nyancat8828 Yes it is, but I was talking about putting one in the "chicken jail". The chickens always had a roosting bar in the main coop
A could water bath will help her to cool down and stops her from hatching 😊
The feathers of a broody hen when the hand approaches 📈
The shady jail cell exchange 😂
You can tell who doesn't own chickens in these comments because this is a perfectly normal thing to do. I like to call it the factory reset for overly broody chickens 😂😂
That happend to my chicken too😂
Legit thought for a second he was gonna say that he borrowed his friends rooster to fertilize the eggs 😂
Hi
I’d just like to explain some things
I am a chicken owner of 6 chickens, however 2 dies so now 4
When a chicken is called ‘brudy’ it means they want to hatch eggs and be a mum, however without a rooster this will be impossible, when he put her in ‘jail’ it’s not actually it’s just a separating process which will stop the brudy phase and it’s perfectly safe for hens I have had 3 brudy hens- Apollo, Pringle and Yokey
R.I.P Apollo and Boris you will forever live in my heart
Hope this helped have a nice day ❤
I'm sorry for your lost :(
I also lost chicks and chickens
R.I.P Nera
@@Pinkst4rs- Me too. 😢 Nera, Appolo, Boris and Matilda rest in peace (or rather enjoy terrorising the other chickens in heaven)
You can stop hen from this phase
Ours has been doing that, too. Hubby's going to build a jail cell this weekend!😢
Raise the cage off the ground to allow airflow underneath, even when she hunkers down. This will cool the hen and break the broody cycle.
Maybe think of it as your hen's own private vacation, with food and drink hand delivered to her door. When she's done she'll feel SO refreshed!
I really needed this‼️
I've 2 hens doing the same... Only on top. Of each other... In 102°
So thanks for everyone's remarks
And they didn't eat nor drank in this heat ... They have a fan and I water the coop with rug on top and around where the air goes into the fan
@ghettoBabyJesus That's a nickname for "husband".
Try the car ride method first. Quicker and not as uncomfortable for the hens. Just blast the AC as high as it'll go and drive her around for a bit. It might take a couple times but it works.
“You are under arrest for being a bad chicken!”
If i was neighbors i’d nonstop ask to pet butters, such a caring lil rooster
She has committed a severe crime of trying to be a mother. CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY THAT YOURE NOT EXECUTED LIKE BOB THE CHICKEN. BOB the chicken tried to be a mother. That night dogs had a winner winner chicken dinner
Bro tried to have kids and got put in jail 💀
Yoooo i have a friendly buff orphington named Butter :D
"My chicken has committed a crime" that line hit me personally. So did the "prison sentences will last 3 days"😅
Butter failed to pay their bond and was escorted back to prison
No chicken can be a criminal justice for chickens 😂😂
Bro legit has a Butter Chicken at his disposal.
Bro is living my childhood dream
Good ending with butter actually thinking about what she has done. 😅
i love that her name is butter and the video just before this was a tutorial on how to soften butter without nelting it 😭 2 different ways to soften butter i guess lmao
She cant help being a brooder hen with or without a rooster lol.
I know that. Im just thinkig she would be bettr without the rooster pestering her
I have a chicken who looks just like her and her name is Sue
I’ve had the same problem before. My two silkies Oreo and Belinda were broody for a while, but I have no roosters in their yard, so they weren’t fertile. I took the eggs to try and encourage them to stop their broody streak, but then they just sat in the nestbox on nothing for a week. Thankfully they aren’t broody anymore, but gosh, they were determined!
Wonderful intro. “My chicken has committed a crime.”
ah yes, the only thing keeping me from torn apart and desintegrate. *THE CHICKEN*
