Huge props for calling out Nintendo on their BS. And huge props to being able to explain the story so completely, even though the news just publicly broke. Respect for how deep into the Smash community you still are.
well said
I’ve haven’t played smash in a while, but slightly sad that Nintendo cancelled the Smash Events.
mogul mail is a god at explaining quickly yet still getting all info across comprehensively
Hey guys, HankVenom here.
.
So Alan just threw the entire competitive community under the bus for his own needs?? Something needs to be done about this
Worst part is, this really throws the ENTIRE competitive community under the bus, not just for Smash, but for Splatoon and any other competitive communities on Nintendo IPs because of the precedent this all sets.
@@Mad-Goose That's a good point, I didn't think about that. Bro is actually a villain if it all turns out to be true
*… for his own greed.
All pros and viewers who value community and competitive integrity should boykott the Panda Cup. People like Alan understand only one language: money.
@@Mad-Goose You just corrected someone by CAPSING exactly what they said. Let that sink in and change your life up.
I hope Alan realizes that if he actually gets what he wants and push comes to shove, a lot of people will just either abandon the tournament scene entirely or retreat to a private, no-stakes one where no broadcasting or monetization occurs. There's no real version of this where he comes out on top.
Casuals... watching Smash... does not compute. But really the casuals are brought in by streamers like Lud, and it looks like most of them will boycott anything Alan does.
He wont have much, dont think viewers much less good players wanna work for a dude that deserves to be unalived.
Realistically even if some top dogs aren't gonna play in it, many lower levels will like the other commenter said. And there will still definitely be a big enough audience to make profit. boycotts just don't happen to the extent they used to before the internet, when was the last time you saw a notably large and homogenous group of people, period?
@@Nate-bd8fg they are going to be a "200 viewer andy". It will be teeth skin profits
@@BURRDAWG_ I hope so. Screw Alan (probably)
Alan really out here pulling a "i killed your boyfriend, so now you can be with me," on the Smash community. And is, similarly, going to be shocked when the community doesnt just fall into Pandas arms.

Eh I just saw a videos that seems to point out the Smash World Tour did that. Well they killed Panda but they survived so good for them.

Alan seems like the type of person who would unleash a bucket of roaches in a restaurant to get it shut down, just because they got his order wrong
I'm a chef personally Nah he's the worst Version he's the type to do that because he ordered, changed his mind didn't tell anyone and then gets mad when the food he ordered arrives because now he doesn't want it and the staff should have known that....
More like just because the restaurant tells him no, we cannot make what you want if its not on the menu

@@the_tea1917 I actually read the document before hand. I didn’t like how they handled this. Smash players have never gotten the kind of developer support that other esports enjoy
Genuinely what's new. Nintendo is the shittiest garbage gaming-adjacent company I've ever seen.
this is just what happens when an organization like Nintendo who likes to maintain a good image allows their name to be used by someone who was “trusted” like panda goes ahead and does this type of gangster type modus operandi. What do you expect Nintendo to do other than pull the plug on their life support.
I feel like Japanese bureaucracy also had a hand in this. The amount of red tape someone needs to go through to get ANY kind of permission or official approval is mind boggling. From even just getting a bank statement, you need to be prepared to have to talk to managers and their superiors with every single piece of documentation that could be even slightly related. And expect a big fat NO even after going through these ridiculously extensive processes.
I strongly suspect this is just Nintendo playing by typical Japanese company rules. They're uptight in general when it comes to piracy, licensing, etc. They think they're doing the right thing, fans think they're being screwed over.

People are getting closer and closer to a breaking point from this to insulin price gouging.
When the bank runs start, you’ll know it’s all going down.
Exactly, the SWT is its own thing. Yes the players are playing smash bros but why does Nintendo have the right to shut people down just because they're playing the game? It's not like watching a tournament stream is a replacement for playing the game, it's a totally different experience. And in terms of creativity/originality there is so much added by tournaments that are not part of the game itself and which IMO Nintendo has no business interfering with.
@@damandatwin like someone in Twitter and another YT’ers comments mentioned, it’s because they can, legally. They hold all the power to their IPs. So they’re well within their rights to say, “hey, stop broadcasting our game”. And from what I heard from others in YT and Twitter, Capcom let this get out of control in a big problem. Essentially them letting orgs broadcast/make tourneys of their games, without the proper licensing. And because of that, the FGC community in general has gotten away with so much in doing things the improper way. And that improper behavior spread like the plague. Again, this is just what I’ve heard, so idk how much truth there is to it, since I don’t know the specifics with capcom’s licensing requirements.
@@carlospolk5033 Does 'improper' in the way you're using it mean anything other than 'without licensing from the publisher'? I understand the way copyright law is set up they can do it. Nintendo is doing something every manufacturing company does, you would just hope that they could read the room and see that a passionate fan base is a positive.
Fan base full of pedos and insecure gamers
20 years of a passionate fanbase unfortunately hasn't changed their minds. They're willfully ignorant.
End Users and Experience has always been at the bottom of Nintendo's priority list
Okay, allow me to play Devils Advocate for a moment. Bearing in mind that I don't agree with Nintendo's decision to shutter the event, is the Smash Community specifically a positive for Nintendo?
Any time I hear stories of the Smash 'community' it's almost always in a negative light, whether due to inappropriate behaviour, allegations of misconduct or just some truly toxic behaviour being par for the course. I don't think it'd be surprising if the child-friendly company Nintendo wasn't all too keen on the Smash community to begin with, especially when a significant portion of them openly hammer the most recent iteration in favour of a 20 year old game that's not going to make Nintendo any more money.
With this in mind, take what we know. Nintendo was working with Alan, and it has since come to light that Alan would pass on concerns, possibly falsified, to Nintendo to get his rivals shut down. Imagine he'd levelled an accusation of grooming, the kind of stuff the community is sadly known for. Nintendo do not want to touch that with a ten foot pole; their primary market is kids and parents of kids who wouldn't like the idea of their little Jimmy being contacted by predators while playing a Nintendo game. So, air on the side of caution and shut it all down. Smash has brought terrible PR before, why not again? It even aligns with their tweet, which mentions vague 'Health and Safety' concerns. The safety of minors is something companies are VERY wary about and Nintendo is never going to be explicit about even a potential association with grooming on a public channel, so... Health and Safety it is.
This is just speculation and even if it did happen this way it still sucks, but I don't see it as implausible that a man who we know lied about his competition might have falsified an accusation of misconduct and Nintendo immediately smacked down the entire thing because that kind of thing happens in the Smash Community with WORRYING regularity and they weren't willing to take chances.
In short, the situation sucks and Nintendo didn't handle it well, but I do think the Smash community also likes to assume themselves worthy of the benefit of Nintendo's doubt when their whole brand really doesn't align with Nintendo at all.

I’m all aboard the fuck alan train (literally every other panda member is innocent here) but at the same time this is 95% Nintendo’s doing. I simply don’t see how one, primarily irrelevant man can convince Nintendo to flip from “we’re not cancelling events for not having licensing” to cancelling the biggest event of the year and any other event already announced by VGBC for not being licensed. Alan simply does not have that influence, regardless of the fact that Panda is partnered with Nintendo. The fact that Panda Cup didn’t get immediately cancelled after SWT for threatening other orgs tells me that Nintendo was lying to VGBC about either SWT having any chance of going through or about talking to Alan about his behavior. I think we need to wait and hear his statement on the matter before jumping to conclusions, unless we want another nairo situation on our hands
While I do agree with you that we should wait for his statement, current evidence is not looking too good for him. Nintendo sucks, we've always known that. That's why we support local scenes, VGBC, etc and that's why we don't bring ourselves down. Our common enemy was Nintendo so for Alan to reportedly (By numerous trustworthy people in the scene) threaten a shutdown of an event if they don't join the Panda cup, to demand broadcasting rights from Beyond The Summit, and to wield this partnership over our heads instead of with us, it FUCKING sucks. It's pretty clear that Alan made the information regarding VGBC being unlicensed more on the radar to Nintendo. So to say it's only 5% his doing isn't exactly fair imo.
@@joevent i mean the 5% is an exaggeration but still he couldn’t have had that much of an impact on the decision. Alans actions towards BTS in particular are awful but I can’t bring myself to take them seriously whenever alan tried to threaten a company way bigger than his own with a total shutdown when they hadn’t done anything worth getting C&D’s either. Nintendo partnering with him just doesn’t give him the authority to threaten anyone with a shutdown, and like i said before, if anything the fact that Nintendo let it slide is a better way bigger issue
What? Comparing this to the nairo situation is laughable. Nairo was proven to be flirting with an underage child, photographed with an underage boy on his lap, documented in the statements of countless pros who witnessed their relationship. It brings so much warmth in my heart seeing Panda get completely and utterly roasted on Twitter right now 🤣 I can’t wait to see there whole platform fail now
Panda should focus on making the panda controller. Then they will actually be useful
@@joe564338 I am friends with someone who panda contacted to help with the panda controller. It was never going to be a thing. They made one prototype. The one in the video. That's it. It was dead before the video launched. Panda was just out for publicity. Seems like a trend now.

We dont want/care about panda really, we just want our community back..
The Smash community is like Detroit you can't have shit.
"Thank you vgbc for paying for a semester of my college."
*doesn't follow vgbc on twitter*
I'm curious how this will impact local game stores. I don't play Smash, but gaming has been a huge part of my social life but this is pretty damn insane to see happening. I feel for the Smash community as a whole, and if this turns out to affect local game stores that ain't trying to make huge money to just hold a get-together centered around Smash, I'm going to be very, very upset.
It definitely only applies to live-streamed events, so that’s probably ok
@@alcor3372 Yea, Nintendo almost definitely isnt going to bother shutting down a local event with like 30 people and 100 views on youtube. Even if they did shut down the streams, local events dont really care that much and will just continue playing anyways since the people there play for the fun of playing rather than to be streamed.
Dude be realistic lmao Nintendo isn’t going to go after locals it makes no sense.
Wow, that's wild. Fr, so many of us smash players have been anticipating the SWT and me personally especially beacuse of the upsets between both games.
I will not jump on a hate train but it really seems that Allan tried to undermine these events. This officially licensed circuit will not be the same, the trust and community built over the past decades are too much to just drop like that. The fact that this happened is ridiculous.
I send out my prayers to the smash players who are a part of panda, I hope that things work out for them.
The chess player is Anna Cramling, the wholesome and chronically online daughter of gm Pia Cramling. She's quite active on twitch and youtube and regularly hangs out with the Botez sisters.
I love Anna ❤
Can the event organizers of Smash World Tour sue Nintendo for letting them know and making them cancel the event such short notice (just weeks before)? According to Kotaku, they're losing hundreds of thousands of dollars becasue of Nintendo's actions.
Most likely not. They made an event out of using Nintendo's property and never got a clear allowance to do so (which would be licensing). They technically could've all been cancelled in the same fashion. Smash events are using Nintendo property without their licensing. That's why Nintendo is in the right before court.
@@johnbishop9621 but according to the medium letter, nintendo had given them the right to do so and then okay to do so which is how it all started underway in the first place. If they have that okay in emails and documented that should be evidence of Nintendo fucking them over shouldn't it?
it's so weird to me that the developer gets the broadcast rights for their games. seems like a terrible system
Well tortious interference is grounds for a lawsuit. If they were in talks to secure licensing and Panda stepped in saying their tournament will be canceled it could be considered tortious interference and grounds for a lawsuit for damages. Hopefully people boycott panda and make them lose the same money they are making other tournaments lose and then slap a lawsuit on top to really prevent this in the future
@@cosmey449 I mean it's theres. They made it, who else would it go to. Fans? So they could make thousands of dollars off of the creators hard work. The system now is working just not when corporate assholes come in and whisper in executives ears.
thank you so much for making this video. i hope it goes a long way towards making this known everywhere in the gaming scene.

This video absolutely aged like milk. Everything that Alan said would happen absolutely happened. VGBC and BTS are defuncted (and no one should have trusted BTS given they got kicked to the curb by Valve before). And now we find out the real reason Panda died was because someone decided to have their tournament the same day as Panda's. Nice job getting 150 people to lose their job. The irony is these people (yes you included) ended up doing more damage to Smash
you rock mogul mail for having brought this much more attention to this because of your platform!
Thank you!
Smash Community: Damn, Nintendo! You’re kinda doing a good job with this for once!
Nintendo: Wait, we are? Hold up, one sec.
I use to really like Panda. Especially when they had the whole "Panda Controller" on Kickstarter. I also love Wadi and Marrs. But it's crazy how 1 person / one action can ruin so much respect I have for them. Don't get me wrong, I don't view the players who are sponsored by Panda different, but Panda as a brand is pretty shit in my eyes now.
Yeah it's a damn shame. I remember being around for when they were founded and being hype for them even if I had no idea what the purpose of them was at the time lmao. I already see some players are jumping ship. I hope them and the rest of the employees who were totally blindsided by this can find better jobs/sponsors
This doesn't just affect smash or splatoon, but this will affect ALL Nintendo games
how so?
@@ayar2 they've tried to make people pay them 100% revenue before, for streaming any of their games, the licensing also could become a thing for all Nintendo games to be a requirement to have in order to stream them, it's like playing monopoly with content creators and their fanbase

Nintendo trying to help the community and IP grow and flourish challenge *IMPOSSIBLE*
I think that NIntendo handled this poorly, but that Panda Cup CEO guy is slime.
Keep us in the loop mr. mogul mail!
It's ironic that the first good news for Smash Tournaments was also the doomsday call because Alan is a pretend-mafia-mob-boss who brings baseball bats to other tournaments and smashes up the whole place because "it's a shame that they aren't licensed by Nintendo... *sighs, pulls lollipop out of mouth like a cigarette, huffs, shakes head, tips fedora* "
Damn I really hope Ludwig watches this video and gets licensed by chess before his own event
Panda has just had its reputation absolutely destroyed there not really any way back without removal of alan
Wow, its almost like trying to get Nintendo to handle any Smash Tournaments would inevitably end in a Nintendo Moment
Who could've guessed!

2022 has been such a comeback story for Melee and to lose SWT and have all of this controversy is just an absolute heartbreaker
This hurt me so much, I was super excited for Swt seeing the best of the best compete for a massive prize pool
Bro as someone who has no idea how this smash stuff works, I'm glad lud is good at explaining cuz this stuff on its own is so confusing
This situation is so fucked up. I feel for the TOs who are now having to deal with the fallout of this, with people likely losing money. I feel for the players who travelled throughout the year to attempt to qualify for SWT and whose effort was wasted - never mind that they likely already had plans to prepare and travel for next weekend. I feel for the Melee community, who has not only been burnt by Nintendo and been betrayed by an org who claimed to have their interests at heart - but have also been robbed of the race for the number one, which was one of the most hyped up series of events of Melee's history.
Big L for panda kinda needs to be boycoyted. Although I liked the company so far it's sad that it has to be this way. Maybe they let the CEO step down from this which I kinda hope they will.
The company needs to go under and the CEO will be the one who did it. Then he won't be allowed back in the industry

Alan sounds like an absolutely delightful human being
Huge props for calling out these guys, something needs to be done here.
I'm glad his shirt says "Mogul" because I could have sworn, for half a second, I thought this guy was Ludwig. Crazy
If I remember correctly, Panda was in another controversy at one point in the Destiny 2 community during year 2 of the game (2018-2019). If my memory serves me right, it had something to do with boosting people in the Competitive PVP Playlist and DDOSing. A Playlist where if you reached the highest rank, you would be awarded with unquestionably the best gun in the game (mainly on console).
Needless to say this was incredibly hard. Only the best players in the game were (supposed to be) able to do this. Naturally, some people were paying so called 'carries' a lot of money to carry them to the highest rank to get this gun (and the clout). Panda also dove into this business. They had partnered streamers advertise the boosting service on their Twitch/YT. However, they were DDOSing people to get their carries to the highest rank to maximise profit. It would've otherwise taken them forever to just get one guy to the highest rank if doable at all.
Personally, I grinded to the highest rank 3 times during that year to get the coveted title that would be rewarded called Unbroken. Not only was this incredibly time consuming (don't recommend), but DDOSing near the top was incredibly common. It would happen once every like 3-4 games near the end of a season. Also legitimately carrying was incredibly hard. Essentially playing 3 vs 4 at the high ranks meant you would get stomped by the stacked teams at the top. I never ran into people that would win a 3 vs 4 against my team during my time ranking.
putting that journalism degree to use.
I love this channel. Thanks Ludwig and congratulations on your UA-cam success. You're getting rly good at these kinds of commentaries.
