With the exhibition just weeks away now, I've decided to extend the layout to give the trains a longer run and open up more operating space on the inside of the layout. So today I'm building the first of two brand new short modules that will go between the curves at either end.
This allowed me to have a go at adding some new features to the layout and on this one I've decided to build a rock face! Watch along as I build up this new module from laying the track to the finishing touches, including showing you how I paint up my rocks before installing them on the model railway!

Why is this channel so good?
I mean, it’s one of the best, but I can’t point my finger on what is so good.
It’s just all very nice
Without wanting to blow my own trumpet, I do work really hard on presenting the videos to a really high standard.
On average there are about 5 hrs of footage for every episode you see that gets edited down to keep things moving along quickly without skipping over any key steps. Ultimately keeping people interested and engaged is the whole point while presenting it in a way that makes you think you could give it a go yourself too.
Those are my thoughts anyway... I'm just happy people enjoy the videos! Thanks for watching 😃
I think he edits well, in that he shows you the detail and gives the narration without giving too much unneeded stuff. Undoubted talent in building, presenting and editing though!

Rock faces on model railways and how they're made has always peaked my curiosity. In fact this is the first video I've seen someone show how they make them.
I have to admit I really did have to go searching to find some videos and techniques on how to do it. What I showed in this video is a bit of an amalgamation of different techniques with my own spin... hopefully it's enough of a basis to allow others to give it a go themselves. Thanks for watching 😃
Just thought of a cool possibility of module layouts, especially one like yours: make a copy of it, except it’s meant for a winter scene! Module layouts are truly very versatile!

Excellent work, That Model Railway Guy. Looks very convincing. Personnaly, I don't mind the relevant ads at all, and visit those sites quite often. Rock face module looks great. I never would have thought to tap the track to get the ballast to settle!

I think something that might add interest to a rock face like this is vegetation above and roots hanging down between the cracks at the top as erosion has worked it's way into the soil above. Possibly small loose rocks at the base?
Trying to model roots in this scale would be tricky at best. I did do loose slate at the base of the cliff on my 009 layout though. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy i'm thinking strands of electrical wire unbraided and manipulated to look 'knotty' then painted in that darkish brown roots lookingcolour. Then just glue them in under the vegetation to hang down like a very bad rock face fringe

Hiya, it’s less of an error and more an editing decision to keep all the static grass together in the video and the foliage section concise. It’s just to keep things clearer for the viewer rather than jumping around too much. Thanks for watching 😃

I don't know if you've tried it this way with the fences, but I wired up the fences first and adjusted them into the correct spacing/where they were going to live and put them on the layout. It is still hella fiddly though haha

Glad you found it useful! Yeah I did the fences on the original curved modules that way but I found it much more tricky and the wire tended to get kinked as it was moved into position. This way I've found I can do relatively quickly, I probably did all the fencing on this module in under an hour total! But everyone has their own preferred techniques of course. Thanks for watching 😃

Interesting technique my dad used back in the day was to use an old paint tray, fill it with sand, screw up a sheet of foil and then sort of push it in to create a kind of mould. He would then pour some mixture into the mould and, when dried and cleaned, delivered rocks that to my (seven years old) mind looked awesome! 😍 I mention this cos it meant he could essentially create what I would describe as disjointed landscapes by creating separate moulds of rocks that sort of sort of half-tessellated in a way that that made it look like the outcrops we saw out walking where we lived at the time in West Yorkshire! 💜

Creating rock faces from tin foil is definitely a great way to do it if you're on a budget - you can skip the sand by just using an old towel to support the foil like you would do with the silicone moulds. I've thought about having a go at making rock faces, just as a diorama, because my layout doesn't have enough room to accommodate them thanks to me opting for an unrealistic canal set up. I would like to do sandstone rock faces because where I live in the Midlands, lots of rural areas around me have sandstone cliff faces.
Sounds like a fun idea... if you're limited on space you could always use the rockface as a backdrop instead - you don't necessarily have to have visible land behind them like I have here. Thanks for watching 😃

Like other people, I have to comment on the high standard of your videos. They are very good, suspiciously good. It's very rare to find a channel that has A) Good quality video production and editing B) Good script C) A presenter's style presentation.
Do you do everything yourself or are other people also involved with the process?
Thanks, I work really hard to make these videos as good as they can possibly be so it's always nice to know that it's appreciate. Yep, everything is done by me when it comes to the videos. I've been working on things like this (both on and off camera) for a long time now as part of my job so I've had a bit of practice.
A big reason for starting the channel was because I felt there was lots of great information out there that just needed to be packaged up and presented nicely. Thanks for watching 😃

Great stuff and very inspirational. Is there any way to disguise the lines made between modules, maybe a fence right along the edge with long grass around it (because the grass at the fence tends to grow a bit longer) and some overlapping vegetation? There is the risk, of course, that it will get damaged when separated but a little glue to reattach isn't so bad.
I found that the static grass I used was long enough to disguise the join in most instances. Thanks for watching 😃

Another fantastic video - really well done! If you don’t mind I have a couple of questions - how long did this take in total, at what point did you clean down the rails after airbrushing and finally (I’m sorry just curious) what wire do you use as a bus ?
Glad you enjoyed it! So this entire module probably took around 6 days to complete (including baseboard construction). Because of the exhibition and the amount of other modules that needed to be done I knew I had to work quickly - basically a module a week.
After airbrushing the rails I try to clean the tops while the paint is still wet. That will remove the the majority of the paint and then you can just run a track rubber over it afterwards to really clean them down. I also run the track rubber over them again after putting the glue on the ballast just to remove any excess PVA that might have dried on the rails too.
As for wire, I believe I'm using 18AWG wire - although that's overkill. I use this because I also have a Hornby Live Steam loco that runs on a much higher voltage. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 🤩
How does the layout look when it’s being exhibited. I’d imagine by the way it’s built you can simply flip the two station modules right?
That's exactly right, the two station modules rotate 180 degrees so that it faces outwards. The same happens with this rock face module too so that the viewer always sees it from the front. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi, new follower here who has been binging your channel and this series. It just occurred to me that it could be possible to use the brass screws to provide the power at each end and your metal alignment dowels to transfer the bus between boards… which could mean these sections would fit either way around with no red/black wiring confusion… no idea if this could work though?!
Although now I see that the brass screws aren’t visible underneath as they go into the framing so that wouldn’t work.
Hi Jonathan, as you've already noted the brass screws are embedded into the frame to provide a solid anchor for the rails. It's one of those things where, technically it would be possible to do what you suggest but it makes things a lot more complicated - not only for the initial installation but also if there's ever an electrical problem in the future too. I wouldn't fancy having to dismantle the frame of the board if there was ever a loose connection.

Pitley - have a look at Pitsea ( Essex ) in real life railway..this might give you some different ideas....great video
I partly went with the name Pitley because I didn't want the railway to be trying to replicate something that already exists. That said, the layout does have a slightly northern theme to it. Thanks for watching 😃

Essentially though, the screws are there to anchor the rails at the end of each module and keep them aligned to the rails on the next module along. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Which colours did you use for rock painting? (Especially for the black wash). Are they acrylic?
They're all acrylics but I just mix them up on the fly. The grey is literally just a mix of some cheap black and white poster paint while the additional colours are a mix of Burnt Umber, Ochre Yellow and Sap Green but all toned down and mixed for variation. The black wash is just the black poster paint watered right down. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Are you using peco 100 track? I’ve seen on YT people using 2mm cork with code 100 track and 3mm cork with code 75 track to suit their platform heights. Is this really a issue which cork depth is used?
I used Code 100 track on 3mm cork for this layout. I actually covered this in the episode where I built the platforms but essentially I just made them slightly higher to accommodate the cork. It's not completely necessary though as not all platforms where the same height - the original station that mine was (loosely) based on has a very low platform. Thanks for watching 😃

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I 100% agree with you, but it needs to be balanced. I'm not attacking you it's feedback I'm offering. Naturally, the decision is yours.
Assuming we're talking about the UA-cam ads here, you'd shouldn't be seeing an overwhelming amount of them. There are multiple breaks during the video but UA-cam doesn't usually show an ad at every one for a single viewer. They've been playing around with their algorithm lately so it's possible something has gone wrong/or is being tested - I'll have a look on the back end too but this particular video doesn't have significantly more or less ad breaks than my usual videos of similar length.
Derails are a excellent outlet for your model railway hobby I wished I new about hem a few years or so ago, if you spend £20 or more its postage why cant Hattons rails of Sheffield and others do the same greed that's why Also there prices are fair and always approachable. I have just bought an item from them a few £s cheaper than any where else . Check them out .
